Starward Rogue

ActionIndieRPG

Developer Arcen Games

Starward Rogue is a bullet hell roguelike video game from Arcen Games. The game takes place in the same universe as many of Arcen's other games, such as AI War and Stars Beyond Reach. The player controls a mech housing a severed head of an alien hydra (the main character "Hydral" from The Last Federation), shooting through the levels of a procedurally generated prison tower lodged in the surface of a star. The game… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

There came a time a while back when I burned out on The Binding of Isaac and started looking around for a similar game to fill the void, to make up for the fun I used to have with that game. After long consideration and playing a LOT of mediocre games (and some very few great ones, such as Deathstate), if I were to have to pick just one game to take Isaac's place, it would be the vastly-underrated Starward Rogue, which combines bullet hell shmups and a sci-fi setting with Isaac-like trappings…

TLDR: Starward Rogue is an intense roguelite shmup about a mech fighting through a multi-floored facility lodged in a star. Your goal is to rescue a man, and to do that you will have to blast your way through hundreds of rooms filled with enemies, and encounter imposing bosses who want you very dead. The game is a bullet hell shmup, so expect hundreds of fancy projectiles to be dodged. The visual style is vibrant and pretty, but each floor looks visually identical so the feel of progression is…

This game used to be a lot more fun, a long time ago. It was a very fast paced isaac-wannabe where both you and the enemies died nearly instantly. Unfortunately, at some point, one of the devs decided (and I remember it was literally just one dev) the game is too easy for him in particular. So he made everything far tankier and nerfed many of the stronger weapons. And this ruined the game. Why did it ruin it? Because the fast pace is all this game had going for it. That's it. It had nothing…

An interesting twin stick shooter with rogue like elements. Very diffuclt even on easy mode. A lot of mechs that all play differently. Graphics are servicable, not great, but not bad. As a twin stick shooter this is more the "shoot a lot to do damage and keep your distance" with very few enemies that go down with a hit or two. Most twin stick shooters have a lot of cannon fodder enemies, this is more filled with heavy enemy units and it really changes the way the genre plays. If you don't like…

Heart of The Machine is an experimental strategy game from Arcen (the AI War series, The Last Federation, Starward Rogue) about being SKYNET, or at least some kind of emergent machine super-intelligence. Do you infiltrate, collaborate, overthrow or exterminate humanity? Seems like lots of options!

The best parts of The Binding of Isaac, Twin Stick Shooter, and a Bullet Hell/SHMUP game in one game. There's about 5 difficulties IIRC. You can choose one of seven mechs to be. There's a "standard" mech that is average all around. One with a flamethrower as its main weapon. (A very fun mech especially if you get the flame trail sprint item) Others have varried weapons and stats. One of them is pretty different though: The mech "Redshift" is sort of like the Bard in Crypt of the Necrodancer…

Top down shooter with random generated maps. Not everyhting is what it seems... blast aliens, robots and other scumbags into space while listening to some dubstep music. You can choose from a few different classes and wreck havoc around the spaceship like an mlg pro looking for mtn dew and doritos. Overall plays well, tight controls, different abilities and weapons of destruction. You can dash and move swiftly as a swan. You will encounter magnets which change trajectory of your bullets,…

Excellent game. It was easier to find gameplay on Youtube before Star Wars : Rogue was a thing. Fortunately, you can easily fix the problem by adding "- wars" in your research. Mechs are usually a turn-off for me, but there's enough variety and vivid colors to them for me to enjoy the artistic direction. Other than that, the soundtrack is decent, but a little lacking. Gameplay-wise, it's really refined. The game has an excellent progression curve (even though it will probably be a bit much…

I have little tolerance for rouge like games because I hate losing everything I’ve worked to get. However, the designers of this game struck a very good balance between that and giving you a fair chance. When you die, it sucks but you don’t feel like you were screwed. The more I play the more nice touches I notice: You can exit the game and come back to your exact location if you are in the middle of a run and need a break. Directional door and item graphics pop up on the edge of the screen…

I'm sure there's a good game under all this. But it's so visually incomprehensible that I just can't get at it. Everything's too small, the art style's too complex, and there's this weird moment when you enter a room when the camera does this weird jitter. It's nauseating and there's no aesthetic signposting for what things are or what you can do. To take Binding of Isaac as an example, it very quickly makes a few things clear: You can fire tears. You can drop bombs. Enemies fire flashing red…

I'm not fond of this kind of game, however : - No bugs - Nice music - Nice graphics - No slow down - Easy to understand - Decent difficulty All in all, I'd say it's a good, polished game that will please people who like bullet hell and stuff like that. But I'm not sure the price is right, and I'(d say it's worth around 8€.

It's a top down arcade shooter roguelite, with some bullethell. If you like those, give it a go! This game has almost no story, the charm is based on gameplay alone. Personally, this game never hooked me in, and I have other things to do.

Starward Rogue is a sci-fi top-down shooter with procedurally generated levels and a basic leveling system. Like most Arcen games, Starward Rogue has some good ideas but suffers from a number of flaws and a general lack of polish. The visual style is rather uninspired, the sound effects are extremely bland and I wasn't a big fan of the soundtrack either. My biggest issue was with the gameplay, however. The controls feel solid enough, but I just didn't find the core shooter gameplay…

It has lots of difficulty settings and lots of different starting mechs. This allows you to adjust the game to your liking. It can be a walk in the park or be an absolute misery, you decide! There is a mech that makes the enemies and bullets stop while you are not moving or shooting. (Similar to the game…

Hidden roguelite gem. Somewhat on the easy side on normal, it gets really tough on higher difficulty settings, also feature easy modes (two below normal) for less skilled players. Good diversity of everything, enemies, items, weapons, useable, passives, rooms, bosses, level up mutators. It definitly is replayable from the get go, and the expansion adds another huge chunk. Gameplay is pretty basic (shmup + rogue lite) but works well (i mean it's not really original, it has already been proven…

I'm usually not very good at these kind of games so the addition of 'very easy' difficulty mode is welcome and adds a reasonable level of challenge for me! Good game, looks pretty and runs very smoothly! Lots of items and enemies and I find the clean sci-fi setting a lot more pleasant than the grimness and grime of binding of isaac.

If you want the super short review: The game is very good, even at full price. Apparently this studio, Arcen, has a core fanbase that is willing to take anything from them and call it genius. Me, i just don't get it. All their games are so complicated, look like it's made of space lego from the 80's, sound like a german rave in the 90's, and are generally boring after an hour. But hey. Some dude said it's better than isaac, so better trust him. What do I know ?

Plays a little bit like a bullet hell, but the clean presentation makes it pretty easy to see what all is coming at you (unless you get a lot of helper bots, then things can get cluttered). Wide variety of weapons, upgrades, enemies, room types, bosses, minibosses, etc. Lots of options in starting mech so you can customize your run a little right from the start. High replay value. I picked this up on sale, based on the review that said it was "better than Binding of Isaac", my favorite roguelike, and because I am a sucker for space themes and mechs stomping around shooting everything. It's clear from the trailer and pics that this is a bullet-hell shooter, but I wasn't prepared for just how fast it played. I died 3 or 4 times on the first level and only once had any idea what killed me. On my last attempt I had wandered into a mini-boss room without any warning…

Starward Rogue! Where should I start? Well the game has some unique mechanics, and you really feel like you're progressing each minute. The graphics are not that bad, and the game in generall is just fun to play. The combat and gunshots all over your screen is probably the best part of the game, and the music just fits with all of that. The music also fits the "space" theme. Another key point is that the game has some great boss fights, and you always feel awarded when you finish a new boss!…

I'm rather confused as to why the reviews for this game are so positive. Put simply, this is an amateur rouglike with good controls and gameplay mechanics, but very poor visual and audio design, which is why it didn't keep me interested. For example, when bullets hit a wall, there is no "hit" sound effect or animation. It just dissapears, which makes the bullets feel like nothing. There are many other examples where audio/visuals are missing or thouroughly underwhelming: boosting,…

It's similar to Binding of Isaac in a lot of ways: Explore a floor composed a various rooms containing enemy encounters, shops or resources, fight a boss, go to the next floor, repeat. But anyone who plays Isaac should definitely try this game out, and anyone who's torn between the two should pick Starward Rogue, and here's why: 1) The soundtrack is a bit sparse, but still rock-solid. Why do people keep on making roguelites with scarce health? Roguelites are fun as long as they do ANYTHING BUT THAT. There's a perfectly good reason why this is bad. Say that the player has 10 health, gains 1 health every 4 rooms, but loses 1 health every 3 rooms. Will the player be thinking "Wow, that was a tough fight, but I made it!" at any point? No, because everything is so weak that it's rarely damaging the player at all, let alone single-handedly life-threatening. Everything will seem…

Absolutely fun game, in a genre (roguelite/shmup hybrid) where I don't think there's much competition (except the recent Neon Chrome, but having played both SR is my current favorite). The only flaw of the game is imo a not yet perfect difficulty curve, since earlier floors (in my own experience) can be harder than later ones, especially at about floors 3-4. There's light RPG elements as you can perform various upgrades on your robot thing. Better than most retro pixel games, they opted for a kind of later day 16 bit aesthetic, which permits a bit more resolution, so the game runs in 4K. I only like this game because I played a similar game called Robokill on Rock Solid Arcade. They're all free, but to fully unlock the games you need to pay a small sum of money. The free part of it is very entertaining. This game is definitely unique compared to Robokill in the sense you get to pick your robot and you can use bloodmoney as well as regular, in-game money. I do have to say, although interesting, unique, and entertaining, I'll have to stick with Robokill, even though I've only…

Just meh, I don't see a reason to keep playing this. Got it for bullet hell action roguelike tags, feels soulless.

It's pretty fun but not that hard. It's definitely a bullet hell, don't get me wrong, but with the vast majority of bullets being slow, it isn't too difficult. There's lots of enemy, boss, and item variety, especially when you factor in the DLC, with each enemy being unique. The only major gripe I have is that primary weapons don't drop very often. I only get one or two per run if I'm lucky. Pick it up when it's on discount, it's still a pretty decent game.

Game is pretty cool and fun. It's a twin stick shooter. I like to play as the 2nd ship which has a huge flamethrower. Bullets move slowly so you can dodge. Negatives: Text is very small. It's hard to see how many missiles and secondary I have left. It's also unclear how the secondary recharges. The items need rebalancing- It is not worth it to spend MAX hp on some item. Spending more than half my max hp on a minor upgrade is definitely not worth it, and the game says it costs HP, but it is…

I've been playing roguelikes for many years, and Starward Rogue is my introduction to the bullet hell genre. It's a fantastic hybrid of both. I'm extremely pleased with it - hard as hell, but with such high replay value I can bear my many losses. I've recently started playing on the normal difficulty level, and I can hardly imagine going higher. But we'll see. :)

Fun bullet hell roguelike. Redshift bot was one of my favorites to play with. Great music too

This is a great bullet hell shooter roguelike and I can't believe it's not more popular. Definitely an overlooked gem! First things first, when you start a run you can pick between 9 different mechas, 12 if you have DLC (which is totally worth buying). Each has different stats and starting loadouts. There are 4 different difficulties and normal difficulty is actually fair and is completely skill reliant unlike with some games in the genre. When you just start there are only 5 floors to go…

Easy enough to beat on controller on lower difficulties. Pretty brutal otherwise. Replay value and challenge. Glass cannon powerscaling system where you sacrifice max health for power, this concept works wonders as you feel stronger without the game feeling boring/too easy or without the game giving the enemies unproportional buffs in retaliation.

I feel as if I got lucky finding this game. Very similar to The Binding of Issac with better shooting. Very enjoyable roguelike. I wasn't sure if i would like because of the graphics, but gameplay won me over. I bought it on sale, this and the expansion. I only wish it looked better and was longer. Worth a purchase imo. If you are looking for another roguelike to add to your collection this is an excellent choice

It's not so much a bullet hell, but more of a bullet unpleasant place. Still, Arcen Games delivers an original experience.

This game is like others before it, binding of issac, etc. But its got a scifi theme, at least 8 mechs to choose from. Its also got a really self-paced environment! Want to blitz everything, theres weapons that fire fast and shields that recharge per room. Want to take it nice and slow? There is upgrades that add damage reduction and long range weapons. I feel like theres a mech for almost every play style, with my favorite being the Alpha, you can get silly combos with that thing!
