ActionRPG

Developer Square Enix, tri-Ace

Star Ocean: The Last Hope is a 2009 action role-playing video game developed by tri-Ace and published by Square Enix for the Xbox 360, and the fourth installment in the Star Ocean series. The game's battle system features four party members, and is more team-oriented. It also features more of a sci-fi emphasis than past titles with the ability to control the player's ship. this review is not necessarily about the game, but the port of the game itself. this game uses Denuvo, a performance tanking DRM. battles in this game are going to feel clunky because of the slowdown and i have no doubt that it's because of the game having Denuvo in it. which, why do we need Denuvo for a nearly 20 year old game? anyway, my game just crashed immediately after defeating the boss of the 2nd planet, therefor this review is negative. the port was handled absolutely terribly and if…

If you are anything but a diehard Star Ocean fan, DO NOT BUY THIS GAME When I first got SO4 it killed my Xbox360, giving it a red ring of death within the first couple hours of playing. I was overjoyed to eventually have my Xbox back and have the opportunity to finally play it, being a big fan of Tri-Ace and not knowing at the time that the core creative team was no longer intact when this was made. It felt like a huge letdown. Many years later I came back to get it on Steam and give it a…

This game uses Denuvo, which will lock you out of the game entirely after a while if you don't sign in online. In other words, without continuous use of the internet, this game is a ticking clock before shutting you out of what you bought and paid for. It's too bad. Star Ocean 4 is one of the better games in the series. But in this case it's not worth getting, even for free.

I dont understand why this game as mixed reviews cause it was an amazing experience. Loved it was not 90% medeival fantasy like previous Star Ocean games. This is the most Star Ocean game, space exploartion, planet hoping to multiple planets and alot of sci-fi. The game is a bit rough around the edges but if you get through the intense amount of grinding, goofy anime dialogue and scenes its a very fun game. The english VAs is a bit questionable but you get used to it. It kind of adds to the…

The game gets grindy, let me repeat very grindy to level up and no fast travel. JRPG are notorious for this but this game takes grindy to a whole new level. Checking the in game map is a nightmare as there is no way to move through the map manually. This is annoying if you want to check where something is at but cant because the map is locked in place. With no fast travel and needing to go back to base/town for whatever reason you have to walk back through the whole map fighting everything that…

Didn't review this game after playing it as it left me a very lukewarm sensation. I won't extend myself as there are many other reviews out there, so I will give my general impression. - Most characters have typical anime traits, in a bad way, and their personality can get quite annoying if that's not your cup of tea. - Story is mostly bland and predictable. The "redemption arc" for some characters is quite half-assed. - Level design is mediocre in general, but some locations are beautifully…

Despite the "not supported" warning, works great on steamdeck, and looks amazing when supersampled on desktop. An underrated game. Weak story, but it overcompensates with a fun battle system, a top-tier prog rock soundtrack and beautiful visuals that still hold up today. Highly recommended.

This is probably my favorite Star Ocean game, just above The Divine Hope. It's the one that feels most like a "star ocean" game where you are traveling around space to different locations, exploring and fighting (this is closer to a Mass Effect style game instead of a shipwrecked on a random planet game like most of the others). The voice acting and characters have a bit of a bad rep but I didn't mind either and thought many of the performances were great. There was a lot of range between the…

Honestly this is my favorite Sar Ocean game. Played it on my Xbox 360 back when it first released and now i'm going through it on steam. Others saying the battle parts are clunky because of this DRM isn't true on my end. This game runs smooth. Graphics are good and the story is great. If you haven't tried this one yet you have to give it a shot. Specially when it goes on sale for just $6.29 though i'd say it's worth picking up at full price.

I recently put in 60+ hours into Star Ocean 2 R, and enjoy it greatly. Remind me of why I enjoy the game in the ps1 era, now I want to retry Star Ocean 4, since I put in about 2 hours in the xbox 360. But man, I hate this game, the game awful level design, terrible character dialogue, annoying characters. I can't stand it, worse Star Ocean I ever played and I regret wasting six dollars.

I'm not often one for writing negative reviews, because I try to give most games their grace when it comes to ports. I understand things can be difficult in that realm. but this game is entirely unacceptable. There were issues from moment one; the game just crashes after pressing play! no error code, nothing. Well I worked on this game for almost four hours because I had such fond memories of playing this in my youth. but every issue I somehow managed to solve, three more issues came up until…

Story is okay, gameplay is fine. However some areas had super bad performance, some short cutscenes which involved some camera shake did make frames drop to single digits. Sometimes in battle some UI elements does not load (HP Bars and the target thingy when enemies attack) which could make some fights harder due to bugs. Also if you are using a playstation controller it doesn't support playstation button layout which is another annoyance.

I really wanted to like this game as I have played other Star Ocean games and have loved them. The world is just way to large and also empty at the same time besides the hundreds of enemies on the map. The combat is outdated, which I expected being an older game, but it feels way to tedious and with being an older JRPG you have to fight almost every enemy you see or else you will be under leveled severely. The game never really tells you were to go other than the name of the location. I'm not…

Star Ocean what's not to love always a great story and enjoyable characters, this one is however my favorite, and I suppose always will. Gaming today is a joke, it's a shame companies aren't looking back at their quality and asking where they went wrong, need an actual video game that's good try this one out, works just fine on deck too like most things of you know what you're doing.

I enjoyed the story and characters, both are pretty solid which kept me going on despite really frustrate with the gameplay design until i had it enough. Dungeons are tedious, long walking hallway with so many mobs ready to kamikaze at you, plus some will have very annoying environment traps. And thats not it, the worst point is the ♥♥♥♥♥ save location which usually only 2 available, one at the entrance and one at the end before the bosses. I really hate to say no, but there are SO many problems with the game. Like I would have loved to keep playing and finishing the game even, but the glaring issues are too much. I just beat probably one of the most badly designed, annoying bosses to have ever been made! He flies, so you can't hit him (which is a STUPID game design to say the least, and there is a normal enemy like that), his move set consists of stomping the ground and exploding shortly after, and that is a few other ways, and…

I love the Star Ocean series, and have for a long time. That being said, most of the games (this one included) have a lot of problems that may not be easy for everyone to overlook as much as me. +Natural evolution of the battle system from SO3 with a snappy pace and pretty decent controls. -Party AI is absolutely atrocious, some of the worst I've seen. +Decent story and writing, in scenes that aren't voice acted. -Scenes with voice acting are presented awkwardly with a lot of stilted…

This is by far the worst installment of Star Ocean that I have played so far. The developers basically said "What made all of the previous games fun and interesting to play?", and then they got rid of them. Battle skills that level up, gone. Good item creation, gone. Ability to have different characters on different playthroughs, gone. Uncovering the map, gone. The dungeons are terrible layouts as well. I'm a big fan of Star Ocean and have been following The Last Hope since the Xbox 360. This is by far the game with the biggest budget in the franchise, full of areas and places to go, with secrets and locations you can revisit after you have the necessary items to open certain chests and collect rewards. The different biomes offer a lot of diversity in terms of enemies, and the combat system is very robust, being one of the best in the series. There are also many characters in your party and…

I could care less what reviews of the past have said, this is an amazing Star Ocean game, and in my opinion, an amazing JRPG in general. The worst part most say are that the character's along with the writing are all cliche'd anime tropes, but I think it just adds to the charm of a story that does have shades of artistic intrigue and moralistic values, it doesn't take it TOO seriously. Edge's arc can be as cringe as people want to believe, but I love it. The combat is some of the best the…

Fantastic RPG elements, very grindable. Multiple difficulty options, meaning grind less if you just want an incredible storyline. Multiple endings and a fantastic item creation system. Four-member party battle system with a maximum interchangable roster of 8 characters by the end of the game. Many cool game mechanics keep the game interesting and a good pace to exploration. Facial animations look dated. As a fan of all former Star Ocean series, this one has a much more complex battle system. I hate the wait time after every attack. There was none in previous series. Also, camera movement is too aggressive for me. Star Ocean 2 engine is still the best for this. Difficulty is quite nutty, even in normal mode. The first boss is damn difficult, until you know that a change of leader could be a solution. Overall, I'm feeling a new yet familiar joy again after absent for years.

It's really hard to play this if there's no tutorial for keyboard and mouse. lols Anyways, I kinda liked the premise, but the controls are all over the place... Just as the other reviewers have said, it looks like this port is bad. But who can say...

Broken mess with removed input feature... in order to leave sub-optimal controls There is no mods fixing the glaring issues and disregard for fans. DO NOT PURCHASE ON PC. Story : 7/10 Gameplay 0/10 Performance 5/10 Graphics 5/10 Total 4.25/10
