Open the character creation screen, half the content is locked behind paid DLC. Why would you make a D&D game and leave half the races/classes out of the vanilla game?

Game 178 of my backlog FOR THOSE WHO CAME FROM BG3 AND DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THIS GAME, please continue reading: 1) If you can get by the graphical disparity, then this game is actually pretty darn good. Definitely not BG3 level, but not a lot is. It should scratch that itch you have though if you finished BG3 and are looking for what might be next 2) Speaking of BG3, if you ARE coming from that, you will feel right at home with the character creator and gameplay mechanics. They…

I can respect the versatility that the devs offer with this game to create custom campaigns, create your party, and play with friends. I didn't really use the features that would set this game apart from other games in the genre. Just having come out of the first campaign, I can now confidently say; this was a painful experience. First starting out, the game was exciting: creating my team and customizing their appearance, class, alignment, backstory, etc. However as I played through the game…

Alright. Solasta: Crown of the Magister is done and dusted. In classic D&D fashion, this is a game where your group of adventurers become embroiled in an ever-widening conspiracy which eventually sees your group preventing an apocalyptic event. Which in D&D campaigns pretty much always means an evil god and its followers are up to no good, lol. You can expect that here. To that end, the devs were faithful in utilizing the 5.1 ruleset with all its quirks. As such, you really do feel like you're…

If you only play RPGs for the tactical combat, sure, go play Solasta. The combat is fine, and in a few ways more interesting than that of many other RPGs due to how it incorporates all three dimensions. Moving on vertical surfaces, levitating and flying is really cool. If, however, you play RPGs because you enjoy a captivating and well told story, interesting NPCs, branching dialogues, and choices that matter, you should skip this game and find something else to play. There are actually no…

As a long time D&D player, Solasta feels like a more faithful adaption of a tabletop RPG than the shadow-casting colossus that is BG3. Like the forgotten older sibling whose more attractive and more successful younger brother receives all the love and praise, Solasta is the game that gives you everything its got, with all its heart. Sure, its not as polished, its voice cast is smaller, the scripting is rougher, and the graphics will look better at the end of the night after a few drinks, but…

Put in for refund -- first experience with the game showed that 50% of the options that were listed (classes, races, characters) were locked behind paywall DLC. I didnt expect this and honestly stopped here because I didnt want the rest of my experience to be hitting more random paywalls -- how far in/emotionally invested would I be before I hit the next ones.....

I bought this game and all the DLC when it was all on sale for like 20 bucks. The package was worth it. I really like turned based strategy games, and I have been playing DnD for years. I am also an achievement hunter, so I go into games with the completionist attitude. Combat can be fun and challenging, but I also encounter SOOOO many bugs that would cause 30 minute losses from reloads. The have their own selection and additions to feats and subclasses, which added more fun into the combats.…

TL;DR: This isn't a cinematic high-production value RPG like Baldur’s Gate 3 or Divinity Original Sin, or a massive, text-heavy and choices matter game like Pillars of Eternity, Pathfinder or Rogue Trader. The truest spiritual ancestor to Solasta: Crown of the Magister is the original Neverwinter Nights Wailing Death campaign. It is a faithful, turn-based D&D 5e combat simulator. Its visual and narrative presentation is undeniably rough, the fun comes from the combat and builds to play around…

I ALMOST recommend this, because as a tabletop DnD player I really enjoy the 5e system and it is implemented well here. I especially enjoy the highly customisable difficulty, because it essentially allows for house rules - something I really appreciate. HOWEVER... - The base game is yet another combat simulator. There are endless generic fights, essentially only combat skills matter, and whatever benefits you would get from having characters with non-combat strengths in your party are…

TLDR This is like a AA and grid-based version of Baldur's Gate 3, with less polish but a lot of D&D heart. Some detail I already played this to completion on Game Pass PC, but I couldn't resist a second playthrough on Steam now that Solasta 2 is in Early Access and I wait for that one to go 1.0. This game actually taught me about D&D rules that then made me enjoy BG3 a lot. In its own right, and coming from someone who is not an expert in D&D, all the mechanics are pretty deep. If you are not…

Easy recommendation! For fans of DnD and turned based RPGs I could not recommend this game enough. True to its DnD origins (feels more like D&D then Baldur's gate 3) with fair dice rolls, and extreme level of details. The pace is as fast or as slow as you need it to be which helps a lot when comparing to modern and old school role-playing games, which only offered slow pace turn-based play, or action hack-and-slash without any pre-planning and strategy. The graphics for what it is are good.…

I don't review many games, b/c honestly it's kind of like screaming into a void. However, I hope this one finds folks who are on the fence. Buy this game! It's fantastic, addictive, and most of all fun. If you enjoyed BG3 you will have fun here. It's not as high in production value or polish, but it's damn fun, and it's fully voice acted. They have a neat conversation system where your whole party can participate and there's not just one character dominating the lines. I'd love to see…

Warning! Base game has about half the races available. The rest are all paid DLC. I bought the game on sale and for me to buy all DLC will cost roughley 10 times that amount. It's a large investment so that i may play as any race. As for the game, I might give it chance but Im against slimey buisness practices. To be clear I paid less than 4 dollars for the game at 90% off... good deal right? Just so you may play as the other five races, I would need to spend an additional $32 dollars.…

It's games like this that remind us all that you get a good game if you take care making all the gameplay systems. People often complain about the ways this game is worse than the big budget titles, so instead, here is where this game is better (!) than other crpgs, such as Baldur's Gate 3. Some of it is due to its (older) SRD 5 ruleset, and the rest is because the makers took the time to craft it. -True 3D combat. When a character climbs a wall with Spiderwalk, or flies, they have an actual…

A sleeker, more streamlined CRPG experience I enjoyed this game very much; it gave me many hours of entertainment. I also found it more accessible than other CRPGs I have played, which was a welcome relief. I have played table-top RPGs for many, many years, so CRPGs are a natural fit for me. However, some times I find them just a bit much: too much inventory to wade through and evaluate, too many books and bits of lore too read, too many spells and attacks to go through every freakin' turn,…

The game is fun, I really enjoyed playing 14 hours of it. Until one sunday afternoon i launch and it says i have no save files. I looked online and it seems like this is a common problem. Luckily I only lost 14 hours, i saw some posts of people losing save files 65 hours into it. I cant rationalize putting more time into a game where all of my progress could just mysteriously vanish. It is a fun game though, I hope they fix this bug with solasta 2

it's like Baldur's Gate 3 if it didn't explain most 5E rules, had a poorly designed UI, half the character options were DLC, the text had constant errors, had aggressively generic music, every character was made of silly putty and every turn took several years to complete. actually that part is pretty similar to BG3

I think overall game play was true to D&D, that's where this game truly shines combat, exploration and inventory management was well handled. Graphics? Terrible. Voice acting? Painful. Story? Mediocre. But if you want to engage in accurate, tactical dnd 5e combat, this is exactly what you're looking for. Especially with the Unfinished Business mod, which introduces Artificer, 5,5e ruleset, expanded races and more official subclasses. Tons of playtime to be had with the custom dungeon builder.

The mechanics are fun, the combat is fun when it works as intended. The UI is really bad. One of the most commendable features in Solasta is the three dimensional combat, but it is horribly implemented and mainly due to the UI. Many times the highlighted area of a spell did not match area actually affected, and the bad UI makes it tough to see which units are even supposed to be included if it did work. Solasta: Crown of the Magister — the game that boldly answers the question: “What if your Dungeon Master was a spreadsheet… but like, a *really passionate* spreadsheet?” From the moment you boot it up, you’re greeted with voice acting that sounds like four theater kids were locked in, what I can only describe as, a medieval torture chamber disguised as an escape room and told they’d only be released if they fully committed to the bit. And you know what? They do. Every line is delivered with…

Most of the character roster consists of DLC content, while the base game dosent includes standard fantasy races like orcs and traditional D&D-style classes. As a result, the core roster feels a little limited and lacks some of the more unique character options. Game play feels a little chunky, not been able to level up on the spot having to go back to rest is a drawback and story is bit corny.

But if you're looking for the most faithful D&D 5th edition video game adaptation you can find, you're in the right place. The story is generic, it's missing all the house rules you love, and you can cheat when rolling your ability scores. It's just like the real thing! Oh boy, does this game try to deter you from liking it instantly. Trying to start the main campaign, you hit a wall of DLC. After that, a bunch of weirdly dry choices and options that feel like you're setting up something more akin to a Civ6 game than a D&D campaign. Friend, push through that for 15 minutes, it's well worth it. A very, very solid attempt to translate D&D into a video game, and I mean the whole D&D experience. Paywalling half the classes and races is super anti consumer and killed my groups hype for the game instantly. When multiple skills and half the languages are not used in the campaign, something has gone wrong. What had us finally stop was trying to use elevated movement for minuets with the game fighting us all the way.

Manage your expectations: this is not a narrative RPG like Baldur’s Gate or Divinity. There are no real side quests or meaningful choices. The plot is strictly Diablo II or Mario level: a basic excuse to get you to the next fight. But as a 5e D&D combat simulator, it’s a masterpiece. The tactical depth is incredible and, in my opinion, more interesting and faithful to the rules than BG3. If you skip the dialogue and focus on the best tactical action on the market, it’s a 10/10 combat experience

Too many RPGs in general this month. I'm especially curious how Solasta 2 is going to shake out, as they seem to have pivoted away from D&D Construction Kit (there are MANY full-game-length campaigns for the first) and towards more Baldur's Gate-ish cinematic storytelling with no editor planned.

Summary: A faithful implementation of D&D5 that could use a lot more quality of life improvements. The Good: Does a great job of implementing D&D5 as a relatively hardcore tactical combat CRPG, like Icewind Dale. Other CRPG aspects are minimal. Expect a series of battles without much else in between them. Pretty near bug-free, aside from frequent lag on combat animations. Your 4 party members sit in a pub, waiting for a boss-type guy to show up that wants to pay them to go into the "Badlands" (guess what kind of place that is).  As your party sits drinking, 4 tutorials are doled out as each member tells about their trip to the pub.  Each short tutorial does explain different important aspects of the game but dividing it up into four parts makes it all feel much longer than it is.
