Slave Zero

Action

Developer Accolade, Inc.

Slave Zero is a 1999 action video game developed and published by Infogrames North America for Dreamcast, Windows 95, and Windows 98. While the game was originally designed to work with Windows 95 and Windows 98, a fan following had developed a number of CD cracks in order to make the game compatible on newer systems. While this allowed the software to become playable, it still required that the owner possess the… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Fans of the original release should be wary of purchasing this steam re-release. Instead of using Direct3D it uses something called nGlide, this means that you no longer have the bump-mapping of the original nor do you have the option of true colour textures (this being a game made back when 16bit colour was actally an option). On top of this the crosshairs are noticeably off center making long-range engagements more difficult, especially now since the lock-on missiles no longer work. Until…

Well I was a designer on this game so its hard to be objective. However, that said, the game didn't end my life. And it has giant robots. And I can throw civilians against building walls. I rate it 5 out of 5 Sov-Kahns.

ok, just have to say this first. Don't take my lack of hours in steam as anything. I played this game and finished it years ago when it was new and was very happy when i found it on steam recently. Slave Zero is a classic mech game that i feel no one else has ever pulled off quite like this. The levels are different levels of a massive populated futuristic city. when you finish the stage you either jump into a massive elevator to the next area of the city or go through blast doors. you can use…

This is one of those gems from the golden age that never stops being fun despite its shortcomings. It wasn't perfect when it was released, and it isn't perfect now, but at its core, it's a solid game with fun gameplay. This is also a fantastic port, so kudos to the team that brought this to Steam.

Thanks to a PC Gamer demo disc I played this game when I was a kid. The game was fun then, and its fun now! The game definitely feels easier than I remember, but a lot of old games feel that way. Some of the graphics options are not compatible with current gen hardware but that is to be expected, they are red and cannot be selected in game. The game still runs great on my three year old windows 7 hardware. I would have liked to see a few updates with it, like better textures, but it's not…

Good game that aged really bad, also this Steam version has video awfully broken using a 3D library wrapper called nGlide, only for supporting bigger resolutions without proper aspect ratio gameplay (the original "Slave Zero" has Microsoft Direct3D support with more graphical options and minor glitches). The game seems fun, but the resolution is too small, with no fullscreen option. This means all of the action is in a small window while you have to squint to see what's happening. Also, the crosshairs aren't properly aligned, so you will miss a lot of your shots. Unless the problems get fixed, I can't recommend this in its current state.

there's this old video game called...Slave Zero, I think. where you are ostensibly a giant robot running around a cyberpunk city and it just...completely fails to communicate any sense of scale - you feel like a human in a weird suit running around oddly designed interior rooms.

I remember when I first got this game some 14 years ago, I went into it blind and loved every moment of it. I still do. When I saw it on steam, I had to get it. It's amusing looking at reviews from back in the day that were generally unfair to the game. The game's essentially a run-and-gun game in 3D with cutscenes thrown in, and it lives up that description. Essentially you point your gun at things that shoot at you and hold down the mouse button while running towards the end of the game.…

Horrid horrid port that made a game that was probably already jank even jankier, other than random bugs, the two main things are, the crosshair is not where you shoot, it's about a centimeter right and down of where it should be, and there was a point late in the game where it would crash every single time until i messed with the graphics settinggs, i can recommend the game but this version of it is broken

Slave Zero is a Dystopian Cyberpunk 3rd-Person-Shooter for Sega Dreamcast. This is a rather.... compromised port of a better PC game - here the framerate takes massive hit, and the game lacks Keyboard/Mouse support, so you're forced to play on pad. But it did add a 4P Deatmatch mode!

This is the Steam version of the 1999 PC classic (?). If you play a lot of older games, you'll know modern developers often change mechanics, polish issues, or make changes to controls, to make them more intuitive for a modern audience. This can create issues in the framerate or the gameplay, making these games unfun even for retro gaming. Ignore all of that; this is a good port! The frame rate does struggle sometimes when loading surprise enemies, but otherwise it's a decent - warts and…
