With a distinctive Namco feel, Horizon Shift is one of the most accomplished arcade games since Pac-Man Championship Edition DX+. You can think in Space Invaders Extreme going to bed with Donkey Kong Horizon Shift is one of the most brilliant single screen shmups ever created, that it’s heavily influenced by Taito contemporary classics like Space Invaders Extreme. But it also succeeds on putting a lot of masterful new design ideas on the table, trying to break the player’s preconceptions…

Edit: This is a labor-of-love for the developer, and it shows. They are very active and interested in community input - this cannot be valued highly enough. With that being said, unfortunately I don't see the magic that everyone else sees with Horizon Shift. I have tried several times to get into it, and all I can see is a subpar arcade shooter. While the axis-flipping mechanic is not new, the game does bring some interesting platforming mechanics into play complete with enemies being able to…

This game was reviewed using a code sent by the developer. Horizon Shift is a bullet-hell wave based shooter. You are essentially on your horizon (no surprises) with your little space ship/gunner. The game play is very similar to that of Space Invaders except you have to do it on two sides of the horizon which at the best of times is a hectic war. You can collect powerups, sheilds and if you kill enough enemies, you get a "wipe the board" abilitiy which is a life saver at times. The graphics…

Meh it's a mash up of two different classic arcade styles that unfortunately didn't really tickle my pickle. It feels tedious and quite overwhelming making the experience kind of stressful. Between that and the uninspired retro art style I really didn't enjoy this one like I thought I would. :-(

Bringing back the Arcade Style Shooters Ok Horizon Shift is a throw back to the Space Invaders days. There is a Line in the middle and you must kill things wile fliping back and forth and jumping trying to avoid the bad guys from the horizon line in the middle. The bad guys can brake the line also so you need to jump and try and kill as many as you can to end the round. The boss fights can be very challenging and will keep you on your toes. In the interest of fairness and honesty, I will start by saying that I was gifted this game. I will do my best not to let that cloud my review. This game is a very interesting marriage of features from old school arcade games, mostly shoot em ups. The visuals seem to be inspired by asteroids, while the game play is inspired by numerous other games, from some rail games like space invaders to some elements of bullet hell games, to reflexive game play and decision making that seems to be unique…

(Disclaimer : Review copy supplied by the developer) ... Heeeeey, this looks like a Ping Pong Table. Wait, what's with the asteroids, why am I being shot at?!?!... It all starts so gently, you get placed on the centerline of what looks like a giant ping pong table that has had its' net removed. The game has a distinctly neon feel to it, with lots of wireframe overlaid over a 3D background and a thumping dance track that settles you in, you are told that the right thumbstick will flip you so…

It's got to be hard to make a shooter that gets some attention these days. There's just such a huge glut of them that they need something really special to stand out from the crowd. Horizon Shift goes in a direction that I've certainly never seen before, mixing in platforming elements of all things to an otherwise Geometry Wars-y design. And while it still might not be hugely groundbreaking, it can keep you busy with some quality shooting. Horizon Shift has you commanding a simple…

Target Audience: SHMUP fans wanting something different. Summary: Horizon Shift is a great twist on the shoot em up genre that feels like a breath of fresh air for the genre. The added mechanics add a bit of depth to the gameplay that I haven't seen in the genre, and it adds elements of platforming that makes strategic defense of your Horizon (the middle line of the screen that you move upon) rather important, due to it being able to be destroyed. Uniqueness in Enemy and variation of…

Frustrating AF. Collisions are much bigger than visual ships/projectiles. If you have crab pincers instead of hands like I do, only pain awaits you in this game. To clarify, I'm not big fan of that type of games, but I played much better ones.

Are you the type of person who can pat their head and rub their stomach? This is the gaming version of that. Horizon Shift is a very difficult game to say the freaking least. Albeit I suck at these types of games. First the fluff. The music is up to par with beats and songs that get your heart pumping and get you into a rhythm. Graphically the game is suited to what is needed. It doesn't distract your eyes or draw unwanted attention away from whats important. Staying alive. There is a fair…

Horizon Shift offers twofold horizontal planes, amazing music, and a variegated presentation. Although challenging, Horizon Shift is incredibly fast-paced, addictive, and just plain fun. You are always trying to beat your own personal high score, or the high scores of friends. At the price point, Horizon Shift is a perfect addition to your collection if you're a fan of vector, retro, arcade-like games that have that old school difficulty alongside it. This game satisfies the nostalgic old shooter games, like Galaga, with an added horizontality of a center base line that you can flip on to shoot enemies above and below the line. Defend yourself from enemies that will shoot and destroy you, or parts of the platform you're on and if you let the latter happen - well the game gets harder! There's several different game modes, and options (waves, speed, effects, etc.) for each game mode makes it very flexible to your preference of gameplay. My…

You know, for a genre that's supposed to be "dead" according to some, there sure are alot of shmups these days. I can think of tons of great ones on the PC, shmups of all types, from traditional to bullet-hell and otherwise, and then there's the mobile scene... who coulda known that it would turn out to be totally perfect for that genre? Well, with a tablet anyway. Even hyper-difficult bullet-hell games tend to be great on there. But really, there's tons of them now and more keep coming.…

This is a rather nicely made little arcade shooter in the style of classic coin-op machines of the 80s. It's not just a simple remake, though - it brings some new ideas on the table. At first glance it resembles a space invaders that is mirrored at the ground line. Your mission: defend the horizon against waves of all kinds of alien crafts and other objects that fall into several color-coded categories. Beset from both above and below, you can swivel up and down, slide and jump and collect…

This is an amazing bullet hell. One of the most interesting things about this game though is the different enemy types. Usually a different color means a completely different purpose. Some enemies will crash into & break parts (sometimes the entire) of your horizon, while other land & walk along it, creating obstacles that you must jump over. Then there's the traditional enemy that will just shoot you. It's extremely easy to get caught up by a certain enemy, & while you shoot it, maybe a crab…

Horizon shift is one of those "what if" kind of games that really bends what people typically think when it comes to a genre. It combines elements from bullet hell shooters, and basic platforming elements (Being able to jump) Along with this, a totally unique yet simple idea of having a middle line be your playing field. The controls are great, the visuals are pumping and the music is really rad. Jason Heine of the EMU review really did a great job with this one. Really worth picking up.

This is a retro neon/minimalist themed single screen shoot'em'up in the style of Space Invaders from the 1980s. The gimmick here is that you control your shooter on a band in the middle of the screen and you must flip between shooting "above" and "below" your position on the clothesline. Be careful or the enemies will shoot out part of your clothesline, then you will fall off! While the developers may have been passionate about their project, passion and quality are not the same thing (if…

It's like if Robotron, Arkanoid and Space Invaders got sucked into a Tempest brand blender and this GLORIOUS thing came tumbling out to give you a swift kick in the ass. If you are a fan of trying to beat your high scores or other people then this game is for you. It's got a nice challenge (but still fun) that makes you want to keep trying and trying again. While hardly genre defining Horizon Shift is a worthy homage to the vintage static screen arcade space shooter scene that even tips its hat to the late, great breakout. Fans of the genre should buy without hesitation, as for those on the fence, know the game is challenging, but not brutal, learn the waves and persist, it's a game of skill and with patience you will get a little further with each play and eventually, you will beat it.

It has some key flaws that make it too difficult to play through later levels, but the foundation is good. Would only recommend for a casual play of the game. Past the third boss, relies a little too much on luck thanks to power ups being a very low chance on kill to drop. If the roaming lasers had a lower duration similar to the cross spinning lasers and if the power ups were tied to a more stable method, would be a game to highly recommend. Challenges what you expect from a shmup and achieves the immense task of moving such a well established genre forwards and making it fresh and exciting again. Absolutely solid game design that the big studios could learn a thing or two (or three) from. Worth every penny and then some. Buy it!!
