Factions with distinct personalities, art, and voice acting, secret project (wonder) videos, many from Baraka, infinitely customizable units, and more aggressive AI on harder difficulty levels rather than mechanical advantages. I finish 90% of my SMAC games compared to probably 10% of any Civ game. The planetary threat, continued discovery and unit/facility evolution, and terraforming keep you busy into the late game. Highly recommended.
