Information / Review English SGS Taipingsis a strategy/war game developed by Strategy Game Studio. Gameplay / Story The Taiping Rebellion (1851-1864) was a confrontation between the Chinese Empire under the declining Qing dynasty and the Taiping movement. By the mid-19th century, China was beset by many problems. A series of natural disasters had hit the country. The Qing dynasty was not able to solve the economic problems caused by high population growth and an inflexible bureaucracy. In…

I’m from Omaha, Nebraska, and knew nothing about the topic of this game nor anything about the history of this civil war. I’ve played TAIPINGS over 11 hours and have now captured Nanchang before the first winter arrived (playing as the RED TEAM). I think that’s a good thing. I’ve also purchased the books, GOD’S CHINESE SON and AUTUMN IN THE HEAVENLY KINGDOM, and am reading them as quickly as possible. It’s a really great game. All the SGS games are beautiful, designed with great attention…

Massive map, massive historical scope, and definitely massively researched. It's like opening up a history book inside this game, there's so much to learn here about China in the mid-19th Century. There's a Grande Campaign and smaller scenarios, both tactical and strategic action, with naval and land forces, supply, and production. -- Terrain effects, weather, the importance of the major rivers and mountain systems; political events, at Court, within the Taiping movement, and with the…

I have to learn my lesson regarding SGS games. They generally are hard to understand as the interface is not always clear. The games have the feeling that they are board games made for the computer. But the AI is playing a different game than we are. For example, my Taiping armies attack the Qing army defending Guangzhou month after month. The Qing army routs but I'm defeated during the pursuit phase every time. This is absurd and I answered my own question: how can I play such a game. I…

An interesting (and unknown to me) historical setting and its nice presentation led me to purchase Taipings. Unfortunately, its AI was so bad that I have to give it a negative review. Taipings is what I would call Ageod-lite. It plays very similarly to that older game series except not as complex. (Apparently, one of SGS's developers was also an Ageod developer. it certainly shows.) As an Ageod veteran, I was able to jump into this game easily. It was all very familiar except for its…

You'll never watch a Wuxia story the same way again. An epic dive into an historical Chinese experience. The wars of the Taiping rebellion gave rise to the names of many of the best dishes found in Chinese restaurants (Lake Tung Ting Shrimp and General Tso's Chicken for starters, but every successful Qing banner leader seems to have gotten his own place on the menu), All Napoleon ever got was an outrageously good pastry and a bottle of brandy.

Good gaming concept based on a well established system but once again AI seems to be able to make unrealistic moves and ignore supply constraints. Might be a bug so if issues solved would recommend. The combat system also seems to come up with some weird results sometime ie sides that seem to be winning on morale are suddenly declared losers even if they have higher morale and have inflicted more hits. What effects the game more is when cities seem to randomly switch back to the AI side without…

This game has covered the very detail of Taiping War. After played a few hours I read the History of Taiping War published by Nanjing University and found it has successfully reproduce the course of war. In history, Taiping launch a north expedition try to exploit the chaos situation of empire and been totally destructed by yellow river flooding and subsequent severed winter. I always imagined what would happened if Taiping can setup their base in GuanZhou instead of Nanjing or consolidate…

One of the best games of SGS titles I think. Music and portraits of units and leaders AGEOD game standard. Design is solid with mechanics if it had a better AI it would be all time classic on the topic. Still later start dates AI is sufficient, Very seldom freeze in turn can happen but it is easy to overcome with autosave function between turn phases.

This is going to take some time to understand, much less to master! Overall, very interesting - has made me do outside research into a period I knew very little about.

One more success of the SGS Team: the subject is well covered and richly researched. The little I know and read on the matter was found in the game. In addition the game has a tense atmosphere, a large range of strategic choices, and I personally appreciate the variety and quality of the graphical content. The game is refreshing and offers many challenges. I have "just" played a few years, nothing is yet decided, and I love it... A very good buy and fun time well spent.

A good game if start as Taiping from the beginning. However, if you start as Qing, Taiping's ai would become really stupid. The whole Taiping army will move all the way towards the mountains in Yunnan and starve to dead til the end, making the game too easy.

Compared to scg finland that I also have, I find scg taiping more interesting. There is a larger map, more options and a lot of unit difference. And also a game in another era (there a enough about WW2). Hopefully the AI is also better than scg finland. In that game the AI is worse, Now in turn 20 and get the message that Hong is dead, that's very fast and bad luck for the taipengs with morale drop. In reality, this was not until 1864

Taiping Heavenly Kingdom is a very interesting history of modern China, I'm so glad to see that someone make a war-game about this turbulent period. It's a enough hard-core war-game for most of the players who like board game and history. But as a new player of this series, I find that there's no reconnaissance in the game, so that I'm never sure about if I should fight or retreat, I think it would be better to have some scouts as a part of the army in the game, it will make the game more…

Have always appreciated Avalon Games other efforts. But for me this hits a brilliant and under-served period of history. There's a great book on the Taiping Rebellion, "God's Chinese Son" that I highly recommend. 20 million casualties is nothing to look down your nose at - it was a vital world history event. I appreciate all the added complexity, this and the recent Korean War title are my absolute favorites. - I see you have it translated into Chinese, but If you were to publicize over…

Probably my favorite so far of the SGS games I've played - there is a lot going on and it really feels like a very well done wargame. It's hard to get solid wargame experiences on steam that aren't super overwhelming (and those are fine sometimes) but these are like light versions of the old AGEOD games and they aren't so light as to feel like I'm not doing anything interesting.

I cannot comment on the game itself because I wasn’t able to play it. This is a Public Service Announcement post to anyone thinking of buying this game and has one or more game controllers plugged in that have sliders or rotational buttons. The game's menu auto scrolls and you have no control over it (unless you unplug your controllers). Given that my controller connections are not easily accessible to unplug and reconnect afterwards every time I might want to play this game, that's a deal…

Fantastic game! The only game that I know of that covers the Taiping Rebellion, it is an exceptional game. Overall, I'd give this game as many stars are allowed for depicting a lot of the difficulties of the period and such a fascinating period of history. The only improvement or area of refinement I would suggest is to just create a game covering general collapse of the Qing Empire over the period, with the Qing having wars against specific rebellions (such as the Punti-Hakka Wars, the Red…

This could be a really good games - tough, 'balanced', detailed, historically accurate, interesting, unusual period etc... There is (currently) only one major problem, it's really, really unstable and every time I've played so far, I've got so far (from turn 12 to turn 29) and then a different glitch has ended the game. It is so annoying I'm not sure I can be bothered any more.

为什么占领北京,咸丰皇帝也战死,太平天国没有胜利?游戏还在继续? Why did the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom fail to win when Beijing was occupied, Emperor Xianfeng died in battle? The game is still going on?

being a history nerd, a fan of strategy games and a fan of build games, this game sadly fell to one of the tragic weaknesses I have when dealing with these types of games. Bad or overly redundant UI. bare minimum most UI should at least be intuitive with easy to understand functions rather than a dozen way to display the same unit information, but not actually make anything happen. I did try to figure it out via the tutorials. the tutorials are very lengthy, alot of padding and take forever…

Taipings is basically late 1990s/early 2000s wargame design. There are event cards. They have impacts, but they are very about 90% generic events "blockade lifted" sort of things -- even though the war itself was an extremely politically nuanced and complex. The combat system is buckets of (virtual dice). The Taipings at least improve over time -- sort of a 3 stage upgrade that feels a bit like the classic GDW War Game, A House Divided. Units from various regions and insurgencies are…
