Final Verdict I don't recommend this game to non-fans. I regret buying this on Day 1 without playing the demo. 30h in and I'm already sick of the game, might go back in the future but meh... Story: Except Saga Frontier 2, the Sage Series has never been strong in the story department but this one probably the worst among them. No character growth, except the prologue and last world, few Main Character original content. Due to the length of one play through (10-15h), the "original" part was so…

*EDIT AFTER 58 HOURS AND COMPLETION OF SUIGNAS' STORY* After playing for a whole run I do really like this game as I expected <3. Suignas is a good starting Hero but he is more of an Anti-Hero ;). The final boss for his route is easier than Diva No.5's final boss. After completing one route you inherit all non-story based items and gear, on fresh runs(no need to select NG+). I've just started an Ameya run, so I've only just seen the start of it but this is such a helpful feature <3. The…

I hate to do this as a long time SaGa fan, but I can't fully recommend this game. While I'm happy with the return of race mechanics and seeing Scarlet Grace's combat mechanics expanded upon... that about ends my pros for the game. Gone are the good old days of getting lost in an open world. Emerald Beyond takes on a much more linear and restricted approach. Traveling from one contained world to the next, each filled with an unsatisfying story which ends abruptly. The developers wanted to make…

HOW HAVE YOU PLAYED THIS FOR 100 HOURS ALREADY DUDE shut up SO SHOULD I BUY THIS DAMN THING OR NOT? As a series veteran, I wholeheartedly recommend this, with some caveats of course, if you don't like the modern Unlimited/SSG format you probably won't like this game either, the lack of budget is still there, but believe me when I say that it's well worth your time and money. To newcomers: This might not be the best SaGa to start with as it's a return to the origins of the series in one…

I don't understand how this is supposed to be a SaGa game. This isn't a turn-based JRPG, it's a poorly written visual novel with combat as an afterthought. It's hard not to compare this with older games in the SaGa franchise, which had interesting story elements, a strong battle system, and thoughtful world building. Instead I'm beginning the game with a fetch quest to find cats that raise my stats. Huh? The world is an ugly mash of 2D spritework and copy pasted "buildings", with about as much…

As you can tell by my hours at the time of this review. I like this game enough for what it was. But, it's not a game I could recommend to most people. Like most games in this franchise, SaGa isn't for everyone and that usually won't stop me from giving it a good ol thumbs up anyways. I should mention that this one inspires more ambivalent feelings. I enjoyed my time with it for the most part, and I didn't mind doing the majority of all challenge content. But, it requires looking past a whole…

I forgot Saga Emerald Beyond was this year! Absolute freak game for weirdos. Bizarre even by SaGa standards. Also the YIIK relaunch/remake/whatever you call it is legit impressive and barely seems to have sold any copies or changed the game's user review average, which is kinda tragic?

This is a game that looks cheap, feels cheap and shouldn't be $50. It is a poor showing from a developer and director that I know is capable of better. As a longtime SaGa fan, I had never imagined I'd see an entry in the series with so few of the series' core pillars. But Emerald Beyond never fails to impress with its complete disregard of its series roots. The combat is a tactical affair where you are meant to manipulate turn order, utilize interrupts and most of all mitigate damage. This is…

I'm just over 2 hours in and started with the dismal king (vampire). There do seem to be story driven choices that impact your play through and I'm a huge fan of that. The combat is exactly what you'd expect from a Saga game. It's got lp, random stat gains, and skills randomly learned. That's all good. Story - this seems to be extremely story driven, more so than Saga Frontier or Romancing Saga 3. This isn't actually a good thing in this case - it feels more like a mobile rpg where the…

First of all, I want to say happy 1st anniversary to SaGa Emerald Beyond! For the past year, I spent a good amount of time on this game, and found myself thinking about it from time to time even while away from it. Simply put, it is one of the best games in the series. As far as combat is concerned? I'd argue…

If you get it, you get it. It's not the easiest game or series to recommend, because a lot of things most people look for in RPGs aren't the focus or even there at all: No Towns to explore No deep characters or storylines with cinematic cutscenes Even the decent lore takes a while to come together and isn't really apparent until you're in deep. Some unequivocally great things about this game are: The Combat System The Music Replayability (it's pretty much entirely built around it) Progression…

I feel like I'm doing this review too early despite already having clocked in 45 hours and reached and beaten one of the proper final bosses. But also, a lot of people have made their judgments of this game based on less. So first. This game has a lot of content. I've been waiting so many years for this game so I'll leave a temporary thumbs up here until I can explore and review it in further detail. For now I'll do say this: This is a hardcore game for a niche, dedicated fanbase. So it is not going to get a gazillion dollar budget from Square Enix higher ups in order to look as good visually as Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. But on the other hand, it's also not going to be dumbed down to cater to a larger audience who want to mash a couple of buttons while…

Strong, well written story with amazing dialogue and a real Gordon’s knot of interconnected gameplay systems. I loved it.

I know not every SaGa game appeals to even fans of the series, but I enjoyed this newest entry very much. The combat system is pretty much the same as in Scarlet Grace, which is fine with me. It's a very dynamic system and one that requires planning. One difference is the lack of healing magic of any kind, so every HP is precious. The other new addition is Show Stoppers, a one-person combo where the character will choose from any of their equipped skills (if they can be used on the enemy).…

The combat is amazing, and it's probably the only reason I keep playing but the I wish there was a more engaging story for each character. The story is really great if you work for it and probably a little better if you are familiar with past SaGa entries. I never expected to get completely addicted, and to a SaGa game. It was low key under the radar due to so many other games coming out. Tried Diva’s demo and put on Wishlist for sale. Tried the PS5 demo and realised Mido’s story was SO much more fun and more of a traditional JRPG story. I am not typically someone who plays games just for their gameplay, but this is honestly one of the rare exceptions to that as I have effortlessly put hour after hour into this game, thanks to its combat system being simultaneously very easy to pick up and learn but also so mechanically dense that 72 hours in, I am still…

The SaGa games always make it hard to give an easy thumbs up or thumbs down. Square's commitment over the years to a franchise with constant mechanical experimentation, obfuscated information and systems, and difficult combat is admirable, but also mean that they're not games for everyone. Emerald Beyond falls into that tradition, while being somewhat of a funhouse mirror version of Scarlet Grace. The combat system is incredibly strategic and in-depth; positioning, turn order, status…

Addictive gameplay, tons of choice and consequence, replayability, and maybe the best JRPG combat system ever made. Easily one of my favorite turn-based battle systems ever. Manipulating the timeline by choosing abilities with different speeds, counter attacks, follow up attacks, and so on is as fun as ever, and the new combo system is a nice change up to Scarlet Grace's united attacks. Pared down to its core, Emerald Beyond is a bunch of wildly unbalanced and swingy combat encounters strung together in a dull, repetitive, and grindy loop. The story is negligible, the crafting system is clunky and overly reliant on RNG to get materials for, and let's not even talk about the environment design or the art. It's very good, though certainly not for everyone. It has a very strong focus on combat, where nearly every encounter requires attention. Battles can be lost on a single poor decision, or won on a single good one. Everything surrounding the combat is quite scuffed. It's so basic it's almost avant-garde. World travel essentially puts you on a pop-up storybook, where you move from scene to scene where you'll either engage in dialogue, or fight a battle. It's quite similar to Scarlet Grace in…

Easily my favorite SaGa game, both for the battle system - unequivocally the strongest in the series - and for how experimental in structure it is. Emerald Beyond is explicitly a game that is intended to be played multiple times, while providing a different experience each time. The game is structured around that idea entirely. For better or worse, that can lead to some oddities in the narrative. Because of that structure, where there is a mix of characters and worlds, each of which having…

Excellent SA.GA game, hope that Square remasters Frontier 2 next, this is for who wants RPGs hardcore and battle focused, this battle system is extremely dynamic, fun and addicting, please SQUARE focus on more turn based games like this, I love ARPGs but not every game needs to be one
