The game itself is a classic, one of the best SNES era RPGs that never got an official western release until now. For the most part you have an enormous amount of freedom on how to progress through the game, with a almost Suikoden level of recruitable characters, lots of optional sub-quests, and a large degree of control in character customization. The game, of course, is a SAGA game with all its quirks. Meaning you have a really unorthadox levelling system, potential permadeath (though it's…

Even if you are familiar with other Saga and even Romancing Saga games, you should not attempt to play this one without a guide if you play it at all (which you also should not). There are a number of reasons for this that will become clear as the review proceeds. Firstly the story for this game is abysmal. They tried to give the player complete freedom of decision regarding where to go and what to do, meaning that every bit of story has to be episodic with regards to everything else. This…

First, let me give the obligatory "this game is not for everyone" warning. It is dated, and even if it weren't, it betrays a lot of JRPG genre conventions (as we understood them in the West). I can't help but make comparisons to Final Fantasy when talking about this game, because ultimately what we're working with is Sakaguchi and Kawazu's development styles. Final Fantasy is very character-focused, whereas SaGa is very world-focused. Characters have stories, but they're just particular…

The GoOd. The BaD. And The UgLy. First of all. I already beat this game on SFC in 2007. And now just finished it on PC. Let's start with the game and series. First of all. Do you hate JRPG telling what to do and where to go? Want to explore on your own? This series is for you. This game isn't your Mommy and Daddy JRPG where they tell you what to do, what to use your weapons and armors. No. This is like boom. You're born, GOOD LUCK! Get a job and start working from scratch! >:( The…

Octopath Traveler done right (more than 20 years before it even came out) All jokes asides, the game is great, but there's a few things you need to know: -The menus are similar to Romancing SaGa 2 (so it's not the best) -Text speed is really slow (didn't find a way to change that) -As always with this series, the game does a pretty bad job at explaining things so save often and expect to be a little lost at first. -While I think it's way easier to get into this game than it is with Romancing…

I've tried to play this game several times now, and it's just way too annoying to continue. I can't think of many RPGs that respect the player's time less than this. To cut straight to the point: enemies in the world roughly scale in difficulty to the party. It's not perfect, but generally the more you fight them, the stronger they get. The idea being that you can effectively go anywhere - as the game is non-linear - and combat will feel about right. Except the bosses. The bosses have…

It's a pretty decent open world SNES era RPG. It's not that deep mechanically, the storytelling isn't amazing, but you kind of already know if you like 16 bit RPGs or not. Do NOT be a completionist, or it'll take you EIGHT playthroughs which are 95% identical. Don't do it. I beg of you.

I've been a fan of the SaGa series since I unwittingly played the first games in the series (marketed as Final Fantasy Legend on the brick Gameboy.) I tried playing RS3 about fifteen years ago when the first English translation patches were produced for it, and I really didn't like it. I was much more interested in the sci-fantasy entries in the series (still am) and was trying too hard to play the game 'right.' I grew to like the Romancing SaGa series more after completing the terrific RS2…

How is the port? I haven't had any major technical issues. The game seems locked at 30 fps as of this post, which is sad, but not game destroying. The graphics look good at 1920x1080, but the video options are limited. The menus have been greatly improved from the original, although choosing another color would be nice. Text is perfectly readable for me and my bad eye sight. The translation and localization seems alright. I haven't found anything cringy yet and some personality has been…

Lets cut to the chase. If you are a fan of the Saga series then no doubt I'm sure you'll enjoy this but to the newcomers (Myself Included) what we have here is basically a old INCREDIBLY complicated (No Levelling System and almost No Plot Direction) JRPG with some fancy updating in the graphics etc. I love the old JRPG's of the NES/SNES days and really wanted to enjoy this too but too be frank this style of JRPG isn't made today for a good reason.......

Should you buy this game? Let me ask this: why do you play games? Do you want a satisfying narrative and interesting characters? Then don't play this. Do you like developing a character build as the game progresses? Then don't play this. Do you enjoy the feeling of overcoming a fair and reasonable challenge through your own efforts? Then don't play this. But if you enjoy games that feel half finished, where nothing you do matters and you don't care about the characters, where everything comes…

I've cleared RS3 for 3 times 20 years ago in SNES version. I was a child, and that was Japanese version which I can't read. I search all over the map to clear the map but without knowing any of the story. Each time took like 100 hours to finish. RS3 and Saga Frontier were always my biggest favorites of the series. If you enjoyed playing the rom but wanted a fully translated version, you'll probably enjoy the heck out of this. Romancing SaGa 3 Review: The Game That Throws Everything (Including the Kitchen Sink) Romancing SaGa 3, arriving fashionably late to the Super Famicom party, stands as one of the most complex yet beautifully crafted 2D JRPGs to date. Imagine a game that not only includes the usual RPG elements but also throws in company mergers and acquisitions (yes, you read that right) and mass combat simulation. I'm going to have to caveat this one to hell and back, in spite of personally loving this title. Romancing SaGa 3 is one of the standout titles in a long-running RPG franchise that the average person is going to absolutely hate - the series is known for having opaque mechanics, obtuse plotting and event flags, occasionally wonky level progression making some fights arbitrarily difficult, and a general lack of solid narratives, and RS is no exception. However, fans of classic JRPGs…

Very good game, but it is definitely not for everyone. Having now beaten 2 SaGa games (this and SaGa Frontier on the Playstation 1) I would say SaGa games is an acquired taste. Not for the general jrpg player. The kind of person who would like the game: *You prioritize gameplay over story and characters. *You prefer open games that gives you freedom to explore. *You think most jrpgs are too easy and would like a challenge. *You don't mind looking up exterior resources (manual, guide, forum) to…

Noticeably less difficult than Romancing SaGa 2, this one still pulls no punches. The story this time around is more traditional and instead of spanning several generations you play as one of eight possible main characters with the option of recruiting a party that may or may not include some of the other seven at different times, since some of those main eight characters are connected to each other in some way, such as Mikhail and Monika being siblings and Katarina being one of their…

A "lost" Squaresoft RPG from their heyday, restored, remastered and finally released outside Japan. Even in its own time, the graphics were top notch, although I think the HD upscaling in this version does hurt some of the charm of the backgrounds just a little. So, how does it stack up to the other big pillar of Square, Final Fantasy? Well, it shouldn't. It's easy (and unfair) to call the SaGa series weird or unorthodox, but you also have to ask yourself "compared to what?" Approach this game…

Unless you enjoy playing a game with a guide, don't bother. This game doesn't tell you anything about its mechanics. If you want to find out how characters develop and how they learn skills, you need to look through guides. And this is a rather important thing to know, as every battle spent using "wrong" weapons or doing things that have little meaning as the character can't grow in whatever you try, will make the game harder for you, as enemies scale up based on the amount of battles you…

The problem with this game is the same issue I had with SaGa Frontier. It starts with a small bit of story, then cuts you loose with no direction or help. I didn't play for long because I got incredibly bored with the lack of direction. You get told 3 places to look at then the map lets you go to one that you can't complete then you leave only to go COMPLETELY somewhere else...plus you keep losing characters, and they don't leave their stuff when they leave so all the weapons, armor, and items they have equipped leaves with them. SaGa games are so weird and frustrating and baffling! And GOOD! RS3 is probably the most Final Fantasy of the SaGa games I've played. Which is weird, considering that Kawazu, the creator of SaGa, also made the battle systems of FFI and FFII, cementing what Final Fantasy would become. If you play this, you'll end up looking up guides for both what to do next and how to be better at battles, and this is fine. Romancing SaGa 3 is a special game in many ways like the other games in it's series due to non-standard choices. Despite the counter-intuitive concepts it has when compared to more well-known titles, none of this detracts from the fact that Romancing Saga 3 is a masterpiece. For that reason, I'm going to make an obnoxiously long and in-depth review. GAMEPLAY (COMBAT): Like other games in the series, RS3 doesn't grant you EXP from victories. For a game of it's era I was quite surprised by the amount of depth, there is a lot you have to discover yourself both in the mechanics and it's progression. I spent 90 hours with this game, and it blows. After the opening, you will have to scrounge for things to do. You can't explore the world - you have to unlock fast travel destinations by having an NPC tell you about them. If you do manage to find a quest and complete it, your reward will be a small sum of money or a recruitable character. Each character has their own motivations and a different intro sequence. You get to choose how to shape your character. Some parts are rather obscure, but to be fair, this game is pretty easy. I do the refund because I feel that it's simply not worth. For the same price I can get Doom…

Quite an interesting game. From the completely "do it yourself" playstyle to TONS of side quests, minigames, and optional mini bosses with nice rewards, this game has blown my mind. There is so much to do, so many characters to choose from, and let me tell you, its not easy. Going through this game without a guide will not be easy for newcomers. As you can see, i have over 45 hours on record and havent finished the game yet. I ended up using a guide around 40 hours into the game because i…

Essentially SaGa Frontier with FF6 graphics. This game, in true SaGa fashion, is hard as balls and isn't afraid to kill you for not respecting its difficulty. The story isn't great, but it's non-linear and characters can use any weapon/magic combination, making it pretty replayable. Also, surprisingly, this port isn't terrible like the Final Fantasy ports, so... there's that.

For me, the only main negative thing about this remaster is the FPS downgrade; original SNES version run at 60 FPS but this remaster is capped at 30 FPS. This make backgrounds look stuttery/choppy when walking around. Also, this game is made to be released in multiple platforms, including smartphones. So, the game interface/buttons might look a tad too large for a PC game. Everything else is alright. It still play exactly the same as the original version.

A classic. This is what Square was working on between Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger. Great game, story is fun, music is real good. A lot simpler to understand than other previous Saga entries (looking at you Romancing Saga 2). If you liked Octopath Traveler, this is something you'll have an interest in.

This is one of those rare instances where Square Enix does a port correctly. SaGa won't be for everyone, but it comes highly recommended for fans of the series or those who don't mind an RPG with a little lack of direction.

omancing SaGa 3™ is a fascinating relic of the golden age of JRPGs, reintroduced to a modern audience through its long-awaited official localization and HD remaster. Originally released in 1995 for the Super Famicom in Japan, this entry in Square Enix's unconventional SaGa series remained a hidden gem to Western audiences until its global release in 2019. With a focus on non-linear storytelling, open-ended exploration, and experimental mechanics that break from the mold of its more famous RPG…
