50 of 50 · most liked firstTo say RHEM I SE: The Mysterious Land is dated is like saying Mozart and Rembrandt are dated. This is an extremely well crafted set of puzzles and searches built around a story of sorts, but that's not what's important. What is important is that you are given, apparently, no directions on what to do next. The story tells you that you are looking for something, and as soon as you start you are apparently trapped in this mysterious world of machines, passages, elevators, trams, trapdoors,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →RHEM I SE: The Mysterious Land is the first game of the RHEM franchise; a point & click game where you have to solve puzzles to escape from the town called "RHEM" The graphics are a bit outdated, but i don`t think of that as very important. The most important part about this game are the puzzles. The graphic design is a bit outdated, but it has its own charme. The puzzles are great though. I think it fits to compare this game to the Myst Games. The puzzles in Rhem are - in my opinion - a bit…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The RHEM series is underappreciated. Really, really underappreciated. There's only really one style of puzzle in RHEM -- the kind where you have to make some machine work by finding some symbols in the gameworld and finding a corresponding symbol-decoder clue elsewhere in the gameworld, allowing you to push some buttons on some control panel in the right order. And some of these symbols are probably written on one side of a door that's only visible by traversing the gameworld in a loop for 2…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →RHEM is a game about the ugliest environment ever rendered in a video game and the beautiful, intricate puzzles that fill its decrepit halls. Truth be told it sort of drives me nuts how bare and ugly the design of the game is, but not just for aesthetic reasons: every detail, every piece of decoration, every adornment found in the game, is a clue. Nothing is there just to look kind of nice as you walk by it. If it's got a pattern on it, it's a clue. If its design is anything more than the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →How to play and enjoy the RHEM series The RHEM series is a masterpiece, but is not for everyone, and early frustrations may leave a bad taste in your mouth. Here is my advice for getting the most out of the series: Explore carefully, curiously, and patiently. Look and listen everywhere: left, right, up down. Don't neglect checking behind doors, underneath objects, or in unexpected corners. And remember that most of the time, when you encounter a puzzle, you don't have the information…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played the first edition of the Rhem games years ago, but I don’t remember much of it. This new edition has some extra puzzles and areas, so it was a sufficient reason for me to buy it. But first of all, Rhem is not a game for everyone. Its graphics are dated and ugly-looking. Limited to a maximum display, the world is mostly bare of life without any trees or flowers, there is no background music, just some environment sounds (water, wind, door opening…), and there is no real storyline to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a great game ! Absolute one of my favorite games ever. I've played this game many times, over the years, but I've never been able to finish it. Until this time ! And it only took me 64 hours ... 😉 I did need 3 small clues of the type "have you tried looking behind door X ?" though. I haven't looked up anything else. I feel so proud. 😁 I would only recommend this game to people that love observation type puzzles and that love making maps. Nothing beats the feeling of solving a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I strongly recommend this game for any fans of the original Myst or just fans of open-world puzzle solving in general. RHEM provides you with a huge, sprawling complex to explore, and while the plot is pretty much non-existant until the very end of the game, the puzzles and the satisfaction from understanding the game world and its intricate paths is more than enough to keep you going. One issue, and really the only big issue for me, is that the game will often require you to loop back or…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"It's a killer puzzle box and I'm trapped inside. *grins* must be Christmas!" Played this over 15 years ago on CD-ROM. Bought it again from Steam to do the puzzles one more time. Determined to *not* look at a walkthrough for any of the puzzles this time. This was the first game of the Rhem/Lisssn series (you don't need to do Rhem I-IV in order, and you might even want to start with the later Rhem, see below). In each Rhem game you walk around a large, abandoned complex to find a particular item…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Intolerable. If you've played any first-person puzzle games in the last decade, this is torture. Slow movement through tedious, convoluted environments, inscrutable systems, and nothing to look forward to except more of the same. I read the warnings from other reviews but dismissed them until I got a taste of it myself. You can find plenty of other options that are more engaging and fun.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Rhem Games Are as close to Myst-like games you'll ever play. very exciting and mysterious islands
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →RHEM I SE: The Mysterious Land is an ancient game from 2002. It's a whopping 21 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks support for any modern gaming display resolutions (or widescreen monitors), hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an ancient game. This seems to have been put on Steam as a nostalgia gouge. RHEM I SE: The Mysterious Land is an unabashed, lazy…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you don't have a good sense of direction then I advise against playing this game. If you don't enjoy walking back & forth by endless clicking then I advise against playing this game. I didn't find it fun. The puzzles seemed to be mostly writing stuff down and then looking to match symbols from your notes, but not in a fun way. I hate not finishing games, so I tried to trudge through with liberal use of a walkthrough, but it seems I hadn't pressed a button an hour ago & I can't figure out how…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →RHEM I SE - I would recomend this game because it is a fun puzzle game to play. Knut Müller did an awesome remake of this game. I like playing puzzle games, and this one is pretty clever. You look for different clues to solve different puzzles to advance the game. Even though the graphics might be outdated, it still looks and pays good on windows 10. Coodos and a big thankyou to Knut Müller for making an intresting and fun game to play.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've been looking for a game similar to Myst for years. RHEM has finally hit the spot. Left alone in a strange place, no idea what the goal even is. Clues! Maps! Buttons and levers that change things you haven't seen yet! Only with time and a decent memory (seriously, keep notes) will they all start coming together as you work out how to navigate into areas with MORE clues, MORE maps, and MORE things to interact with. Complete with 'DOH!' moments when you realize how things connect, solving…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Rhem 1, after over 25 years, is now too old. I had stability issues, with it crashing and not always launching, and ancient method of interaction did not inspire me to overcome these issues. That's a subjective call, but I don't think it's worth the effort at this point.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If I could rate it neutral, I would. If you like old school puzzle adventure, this isn't a bad game. Like many, this game wears its inspiration on its sleeve, and I do like Myst-alikes. However, I just wasn't having fun. The puzzles are there, but the world is not. The environment is one note, with no sign of anything different to come. In many puzzle adventures, your reward for solving puzzles is progress through a variety of new sights in an interesting world, and that's just not here. If all…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An intensely difficult puzzle driven adventure game (in the style of Myst). It's good because it gets what makes Myst interesting: weird devices with predictable rules, putting disparate bits of information together, and the puzzle box design where opening one path closes another. It's an old game and it does look very rough in spots, but you will not find a game near as good at making you question whether finally opening the way forward you've been looking for will cause you headaches down the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I haven't finished it yet but if you like Myst / Riven this is a must play. I intend to play all 4 games. It's not as polished as Myst or Riven but considering this game was made by only one person...
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →How do I change to english I do not understand what language I am playing in.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am a huge fan of Myst like games and this one also met my expectations. It was engaging and the puzzles extremely challenging at times. However, I would have liked it even more if game play did not require so much making notes and drawings. I would have preferred to see these items in my inventory, a feature this game does not possess. That being said, I enjoyed the environment and graphic details therein.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I always thought RHEM was kind of accessible, one of the most accessible Myst like games around, as the puzzles are fairly clear and the sense of direction is a bit stronger than usual. What others do not mention, and is what I actually don't like about this subgenre, is how easy is to disorient oneself, not knowing which hotspot can you use for moving, missing some parts that tell you that you can also explore right, and well, if I may say, the always present elitism of Myst like lovers who…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good puzzles, but navigating the map takes like 85% of your brainpower so be ready to get lost.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If I walk too fast the game crashes. If there are puzzles in it, I wasn't able to find any as it was just endless walking with Doom level 90's graphics. I thought Robot-Adolph was going to start firing chain guns at me. This is a 2002 game, though it's listed on Steam as a 2017 game, that was its Steam add date. Awful.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The 3 towers puzzle is very difficult to imagine and solve
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Waste opf money. You get what you pay for. Cheap crap. Worst crappiest game ever. Bad navigation substandard puzzles, horrible graphics and animation. 15 or 20 minutes in i closed it. I'm now going to uninstall it from my computer.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to like it (even though it's old) but it was just a bit too clunky to move around, and the graphics are really low res, and the puzzles a little annoying and disorienting... and it was hard for me to get my bearings and I kept getting lost... But there are decent puzzles that will stretch you, and it's an interesting story and concept, so maybe try it out and see if you like it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A Myst-like that is significantly harder to finish. Lots of puzzles both visual and numerical. There are a couple really obscure puzzles that are not clearly connected to their solutions and a couple that are extremely dependent on visual cues. Altogether one of the most engaging Myst-like games I've played.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an excellent game. Use your brains to get through the experience, you don't need to kill anybody.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I truly regret purchasing this series. The developer made it overly difficult. There are absolutely no indications for what to do, not even slight hints. I guarantee you will consult a walkthough for Rhem.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If your looking for a truly Myst kind of game Rhem 1 SE is that game. It is the first game I completed without a walkthrough. I thought the puzzles were fair and enough clues given to figure the puzzles out. The only recommendation I have is to download a map of Rhem 1 which is the only cheat I used. The land can be very confusing to keep everything straight. You discover several maps during the game but are very poor. I was able to make my own notes on my map for future reference. The only…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →best games ever , rhem 1,2,3 and 4
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent puzzle game! The game does a great job providing you with sufficient information to accurately solve each and every puzzle. Each puzzle is subtly challenging in its own way. But once you figure out the solution, you can be confident that you can enter the answer correctly on the first try. It's definitely a little mazey, so if you have a difficult time keeping basic mental maps of where you're going, it might not be the game for you. I recommend a notebook to keep track of "point A…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →legendary series, I've played this game years ago and I loved it. I hope it will be full available on steam soon
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It has rails and a feeling of the classic 90's games that got me into the industry. Worth checking out and playing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Since RHEM I is the oldest in the series, it required upgrade to SE edition the most. It brings bunch of improvements over original like updated menu, saving/loading slots (but still keeping ability to save to physical file), higher resolution, better graphics and smoother animations. In addition, it has some enhancements for faster transitions and easier navigation. It really improves gaming experience since this part of RHEM requires the longest walks compared to other parts. Though, if you…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game. One of the best adventaure games I played. Great puzzles, not too easy, not too furstrating - requires thinking. Graphics and audio is very old style - just the way I like it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Extremely similar to myst. however there are secrets to find other than the main game. secrets that both give you things for future games, or secrets that require the future games. the puzzles were very fair and interesting. a well thought out game. 10/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoyed this game more than Myst. The puzzles are tough but fair, and are integrated into the environment unlike a lot of other Myst clones- the solutions are all dotted around the world for you to find. There's almost no story, and your reward for beating a puzzle most of the time is to simply reach a new area with more puzzles. As long as you make notes (everything that looks important is important) you won't need to look anything up. By the time I was done I'd filled 20-30 pages of a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is not absolutely terrible. But it isn't good. It learned all of the wrong lessons from myst and riven, while missing what made those games magic. Having difficult puzzles doesn't make the game better by itself. Most of the difficulty is that clues for many puzzles are spread widely over a map that is both hard to get oriented around but even when you know how things connect is a chore to navigate around. Even when you have unlocked an area you don't get any unlocked shortcuts you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It might be the worst Rhem, but that's high praise for the series.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Too easy, took me less than an hour to complete, didn`t even need to take notes. If you see my time increase from this point forward, it`s because a glitch I have on my PC.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For some reason, I've only just come across this series and, as a fan of the Myst series, I looked forward to playing this. However, maybe it's because of the game's age, but I just don't find it immersive. It is pretty monochromatic and the labyrinth like paths of similar appearance make for difficult orientation. Frustrating when you have to make the expected repeat visits to a location, but you just can't find it. Far more of an issue though is that the game crashes my Win10 machine every…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I haven't played much of this game yet. But I have to ask: Is the "I" in the name really necessary? We already know it's the first game of the series. Why not just call it "RHEM Special Edition: The Mysterious Land"? I have to consult a walkthrough at times, but it is otherwise a fantastic "spiritual successor" to Myst.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very solid puzzle game. Like Myst, it's a slideshow, and the graphics are certainly dated, but that's not we're looking for in a puzzle game. We're looking for puzzles, and boy, does RHEM deliver. Every puzzle is intertwined with at least a couple more, forming an intricate tapestry of mindbending fun. The puzzles push the envelope of acceptable difficulty at times, but often that's because you're missing something from elsewhere. The only serious failing of RHEM is its movement. With the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Somewhat like Myst in its puzzles. May not appeal to everyone. I liked it. Almost no interaction with other people, except for the stranded bloke who disappears and leaves you stranded.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Highly recommended for MYST-like game enthusiasts who don't mind the point and click movement for exploration. This is not going to appeal to the open world explore and solve a few simple puzzles crowd. This game takes effort, and it rewards the player with real intellectual satisfaction and fulfillment. The puzzles range from simple to very complex, some are not hard but require you to find certain items - for instance I spent an hour in the hydroelectric power plant trying to figure out…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Interconnected spatial puzzles, minimal story, pleasant graphics. Game runs well in proton, make sure to select "windowed" mode.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When I set about looking for Myst-like games for a video all about Myst-likes, a friend recommended this one to me among others, calling the most Myst-like one he's seen. Well, it's got the look going for it, but that's about it. My time in Rhem was spent going in circles thanks to maze-like world design and maps that don't help at all. Most of the puzzles weren't much better, the majority of them involving valves and pipes that are just as twisty as Rhem itself. I can't recommend this one.…
