Popeye
Popeye is a super-strong, spinach-scarfing sailor man who's searching for his father. During a storm that wrecks his ship, Popeye washes ashore and winds up rooming at the Oyl household, where he meets Olive. Before he can win her heart, he must first contend with Olive's fiancé, Bluto. From TMDB

Delighted it forms a Brawling Sailorman Double Feature with the last film I went to see, The Odyssey, and to discover that the films share a common star in Bill Irwin (Ham Gravy / The Cyclops).

Raw & dirty thriller about narcotics in NYC, immortal chase sequences, sizzling & funny dialogue. Winner of 5 Oscars, including Picture & Gene Hackman. #filmsky 📽

Then we start rehearsing a combination of Cats and the 1980 Popeye movie out in the parking lot. People started showing up to watch but parking right where we were performing.

positive · AI labelView post →They're referring to Kubrick's renowned intense treatment of his actors to evoke the emotions he wants to see, particularly Shelly Duvall in The Shining, who also played Olive Oyl in the live-action Popeye movie. He kept Shelly Duvall terrified for almost that entire movie

neutral · AI labelView post →Popeye is astonishing in that a tighter hand on the ADR would fix almost everything and make it a sweet little movie. Nothing in the film makes actual sense, but there’s a rolling gibberish track of Sailorman nonsense, some of which could surely deal with plot details. But Altman didn’t bother.

Funny premise, but hardly defies logic. It's about as on the nose as a Popeye movie where he gets explosive diarrhea from contaminated spinach
neutral · AI labelView post →It’s amazing how many people to this day don’t know that Popeye was a comic long before his animated exploits ever happened. And although the live action Popeye The Movie is a mixed bag at best, its casting and production design were spot-on and deserve recognition.

Casting is almost perfect, probably don't ruin that poor child's life. Get a teenager to play Anakin. Set and costume design are great, the plot is ridiculous. The boys at RedLetterMedia articulated it better than I ever will, but, you could fix it with a script rewrite or two. *Popeye* also jumps to mind. The 1980 live-action movie starring Robin Williams and Shelley…
neutral · AI labelView post →This movie wasn't bad. Like, it wasn't GOOD. But I can see people getting krunk as hell and having a good time riffing on it. The biggest sin the movie commits is not hiring someone who can do a passable Popeye voice. Ya gotta have him doing murders and making Popeye noises.

neutral · AI labelView post →I was at the dollar store and saw this strange print of a pop-art style paint-over of what I know to be a still from an animation test for a cancelled Popeye film. I realize this is just the result of someone grabbing a pic from Google without knowing its origin, but it’s weird that this exists.

And when Sony turned down the project, Genndy was instructed to instead work on Hotel Transylvania 2.
