Yet another low budget indy title that tries that mixes nostalgic graphics with random pop culture references and memes and foregoes actually putting them in a game thats worth your time to spend it on.

The game has good intentions but falls flat due a major flaw: the combat is turn based and it alternates between one player action and one enemy action, even if you have 3 characters alive and there is only 1 enemy. This means that reducing the number of enemy during a fight is almost allways useless, if the enemies all do the same damage it means that your team takes the same amount of damage each turn no matter how many you already killed. This wouldn't have been a problem and could have…

Basic Information Title: Pixel Heroes: Byte & Magic Developer: The Bitfather Publisher: Headup Games Genre: Role Playing Game General Impression Pixel Heroes: Byte & Magic is a challenging 2D RPG with roguelike elements. In fact the word “challenging” cannot express the virtual punishment you must endure if you wish to advance the plot within this game. And that is wholeheartedly a good thing since far too many RPGs hold your hands nowadays focusing on pure grinding instead of any…

Nice old school party-rpg You have a three-people party and have to get quests, explore dungeons and kill stuff. Cons: It can be VERY frustrating some bosses are bs Oh man dying in the last quest really hurts :( You probrably won't beat it in the first try you must play it multiple times Anyway it's a good game. Yes it's casual, yes it's lightweight, and the roguelite aspects actually work to an extent. But despite the replayability aspect of permadeath and unlocking new characters this isn't a game that's going to have a huge lifespan. Despite this it is cheap and fun and it's something you can put down and pick up again at a later date if and when you get bored with it. So it is limited in scope whilst remaining fun and well worth what it costs if you want something mildly addictive with a fair…

Don't waste time it's just another point & click RPG where you click on things to progress further. Battles are turn based and you pick which weapon wanna use. Somewhat unfinished, can't tell exactly which character turn is now. Generally shallow gameplay with bad soundtrack.

A fun rpg, that is balls hard for artificial reasons. I could live with the "HARDCORE" permadeath mechanic, IF and only if the party could get out of a dungeons and head back to town. Sure the game moves pretty quick and at first its fun to restart with newly unlocked classes, but it gets really annoying really quick. Permadeath should also be an option. These two "features" are hiding that the game could be beaten fairly quickly if you could reload and also return to town to get more supplies…

Think darkest dungeon but you're stuck with the team you pick in the beginning. If you die, you have to start completely over. The only thing that seems to carry over is which classes are unlocked by progressing further.

I'm having a hard time remembering if theres any good games that are pixel art that mention they are pixel art in the name of the game. Pixel Heroes. Pixel Farm. Pixel Adventure. idk if these are real games but they sound like gutter trash.

Pixel Heroes was pretty fun for the first hour. But it became very repetitive. Every fight is basically the same. There's just not enough meat on the bones here. I'd love to see a sequel though, with improved graphics and UI, and more gameplay.

Playing this game means spending a majority of time in an incredibly repetitive battle system with little payoff. Most of the strategic decision-making is frontloaded at party-generation time, after which you just play out the consequences of your decisions for a few hours. In a strange design decision, by the end of a run, damage from enemies' attacks has become almost completely irrelevant, whereas damage from any of several ailments approaches lethality, with mitigation of those ailments…

I REALLY wanted to like this game. I generally love this genre, and the game mechanics are interesting. The three hero combat systems actually works, and the inventory system isn't too bad (awkward at first, but you learn it). The thing that just stops me cold from keeping going with the game is that you can get into a situation in a dungeon where you lose your healer, or your DPS. That means you have ZERO chance of finishing the dungeon, especially if you are on part 6 of 8 in a dungeon.…

I've completed the game, which speaks to its entertainment value and especially humor, but the aspect of the game which is difficult is mostly artificial. The hardest thing to deal with in the game are debuffs, and each area is themed around most encounters having certain debuffs. The game become trivial once you understand what the debuffs are, this means replaying the same areas but with harder enemies in act 2 and 3 is a complete chore. The most exciting parts of the game happen in newly…

The gameplay revolves around assembling a team of three heroes who embark on a mission to save the world from destruction. Each session is unique because: ✔ Characters are randomly generated, so you encounter different classes and stats every time. ✔ Roguelike permadeath system – if your team dies, the game ends, and you have to start over. ✔ Tactical turn-based combat – a well-balanced team and the right strategy are key to survival. ✔ Exploration and random events – during your journey,…

First play through, took 4 hours, and ends with me being stuck in an endless loop battle with no option to quit or kill self. My rogue character is the last party member left fighting a ghost enemy who can heal themselves. My two items are a magic cross bow and a +28 healing spell. My magic crossbow this ghost is immune to. So I can do no damage to it. My two abilities have cool downs of about twenty turns, one is a thing to buff my character and the other is backstab which I'm not able to use…

A game ruined by bad mechanics and cheap deaths. Everything in the game is stat based. Some classes get 5 points in some stats per level, some classes max at 3. That means some classes are flat out 40% worse than others, without anything to make up for this. Most output is based on one stat. Classes that expect you to split points between two stats are splitting their output, again without anything to make up for this. You have to bring a healer. You only get 3 group slots so your freedom of…

Challenge of the game comes from its random nature, and some poor mechanics. You have three heroes vs. three enemy heroes. You get one attack, they get three. Also, all dots and status effects begin when they are applied, and at the end of the round as well, but only against your party, not the enemy's. Extremely slow moving game, based one hundred percent in luck and randomness.

A retro-style turn-based RPG with some roguelike elements. It has an old-school aesthetic, it's got nerdy humor, and there are different classes to choose from to spice up your team composition (plus gear and skills to choose from), also has a good variety of quests (even some choices along the way), but it suffers from some difficulty spikes, and RNG can really ruin a run. Also, it can get quite monotonous after a while, as it's not a very deep/complex game. The game's fun, but I'd say wait…

Plays like the dollar store counterpart to a more polished title like Darkest Dungeon. Clunky UI. Too simplistic to be compelling, to complicated to activate the 'just one more quick run' feeling when you get a party wipe.

It follows a similar design like Soda Dungeon and so many others. It does have its charm, which is why I struggled with the decision to refund this or not. Ultimately, with long (difficult battles) and no foreseeable way to curve that difficulty, (ie. buffs and items...) it just doesn't keep the appeal.

Sorry, I can't recommend. I mean, the game is clearly a labour of love, the graphics are very nice and there are plenty of little details showing the authors' care. But the gameplay itself is just not that great. It's very simplistic, it drags forever and the player's choices are all very artificial. Everything revolves around getting proper items against proper enemies, where usually you don't even know what are the weaknesses and strengths of the enemies before you fight them. And having…

I thought I had an unbeatable team after I got lucky a few times. I ended up getting wiped with tons of gold. There isn't enough mid to late adventure gear or improvements to really help. Another issue I have is that you can play "smart" for the walking random encounters, but they do not give nearly as much gp or xp as fighting. So attempting to start fights is the best possible outcome for long term survivability.

I am a bit hesitant in writing this review. I didn't finish the game, which some would argue affects my judgement. Some of the problems I see in Pixel Heroes are also arguably part of the roguelike genre as a whole, meaning it's difficult to parse what is an issue and what is a feature. As a turn-based roguelike, Pixel Heroes is fine. It has some cute (and sometimes vaguely horrifying) surprises and references, the gameplay follows a pretty predictable but engaging rock-paper-scissors model…

Fun and no-nonsense, but way too random Pixel Heroes: Byte & Magic is a simple fantasy puzzle game that markets itself as a roguelike old-school RPG purely because of the element of randomness it incorporates, but don't be fooled - it is a puzzle game at its core. The combat is very simple - rock-paper-scissors mechanics based on different weapons and enemies elements. Whilst the art is overly simplistic, it does its job - the enemies and the heroes look cool. "Hard" is the easiest mode, and perma-death makes all the time you've spent playing this game that run a waste. It doesn't offer any reason to play it a second time for me. Devs need to realize that "Rouge like" doesn't mean start the player over from the beginning with nothing again. That's just wasting a persons time.

Boring and repetitive. The combat (which makes up ~ 80% of the game) is just boring to say the least. Even though there are different classes, the only main difference between them is whether hey use spells and can heal or have physical attacks. There are also zero unlocks or skills trees or anything. Your first combat wont differ very much from the one 8 hours in, except that the overall numbers are higher.

Pixel Heroes: Byte & Magic is a charming roguelike dungeon crawler that won me over with its genuinely funny random events and absurd humor — there's nothing quite like encountering a Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas reference on the way to a goblin dungeon. The 30 unlockable hero classes and procedurally generated loot keep runs feeling fresh, and when you nail your party composition and gear setup just right, crushing a dungeon is immensely satisfying. That said, the game's biggest frustration…

A pleasant venture back to 8 bit RPGs! I found the interface easy to use, the mechanics complex enough for interest, but simple enough for casual play, and the random quest structure looks replayable for some time. Unfortunately, I didn’t really like this game. The pixel art style isn’t my cup of tea. There is no real story and the quests feel random. Furthermore, the game feel too minimalistic… Kill enemies by choosing one attack (only one, even though you have 3 persons in your team), level up by killing and improve your stats. That’s the whole game. Yes, there are more items and stuff like that, but that doesn’t make the game more fun. I wouldn’t pay for this game.

Abandoned and left with no Workshop to open it up to Modding. This game would be off the charts if they just opened it up to workshop instead of grabbing the money and abandoning it. Now they are making a part 2 and want some more of our money. Will that be left for dead within a year and not opened to modding also. Horrible development that grabs the cash and runs. I would stay away from part 2 because that will be abandoned as well.

This game wasn't anything like I thought it was going to be, but that's not the developer's fault, I think, just whoever came up with the marketing for it at the place I bought it. Anyway, it's an RPG-ish game that functions on a kind of Oregon Trail-esque travel system where you have to balance the length and the difficulty of the trip and hope you don't underprepare for all the stops on the way.
