Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2 is on Game Pass which is perfect because I've seen a lot of people play Avowed and say "Should I play Pillars?" and that kinda makes it a no-brainer.

For games I've worked on, the vertical slices that shipped with the game are: * Fallout: New Vegas (Novac, REPCONN Test Site + surroundings) * Pillars of Eternity (Dyrford + Crossing, Tempe of Skaen, Clîaban Rilag) * Deadfire (Tikawara, Poko Kohara) * Pentiment (Act I lol)

I guess while I'm posting controversial video game takes: Baldur's Gate III is a landmark achievement in CRPGs and absolutely phenomenal as a game, but it's much more of a Divinity: Original Sin game than a Baldur's Gate game. Pillars of Eternity feels more suitable as a third Baldur's Gate game.

🧐 My Opinion 🧐 I finished Pillars of Eternity after nearly 70 hours, and it is one of those games that left me more weary than fulfilled. Not because it is bad in a trivial sense, but because it constantly strives for profundity while failing at the fundamentals that make depth meaningful. This review comes from someone who enjoys party-based RPGs and complex themes, but also expects coherence, pacing, and ideas that are lived rather than endlessly explained. 1. Narrative Structure: A…

I think this really undersells how creative and interesting Disco Elysium takes CRPG concepts and teases them out into new areas. Its basically what if all the energy and effort spent creating intricate combat systems in a game like Fallout or Pillars of Eternity instead was spent ENTIRELY on dialog

Still one of the best-written RPGs I’ve played, but yeah… there’s a lot of reading. I ended up making a Window TTS Voice mod during my playthrough (started as an accessibility tool for my wife), and it actually made a huge difference. Being able to just listen to dialogue, journal text, etc. makes longer sessions way easier. If you’re bouncing off the walls from the text-heavy side of the game, it might be useful: https://www.nexusmods.com/pillarsofeternity/mods/425 Great game either way 👍

As much as I enjoy huge RPGs like Baldur's Gate, Pillars of Eternity & Pathfinder, this is closer to my heart. A game that is wide, not long. Fallout 1 was a bit like this, Age of Decadence as well, but the tightness & conciseness of WoTS1 is unrivaled. A short adventure you replay over and over.

I'm a bit embarrassed that it took me 10+ years to actually finish this game, but it was totally worth it. Great story and characters, no silly npc romances, and a worthy successor to the isometric games of the 90's. It is quite combat-heavy and I was ready for it to be over by the last quarter or so of the game or so. Part of that for me personally is getting a bad case of restartitis, trying to make the perfect character I guess. I'd advise anyone playing for the first time to just go…

Characters will have more spells than you care to ever use, and many of them feel too bespoke to ever need. I don't feel invested in the combat.
