Neversong
Developer Atmos Games, Serenity Forge
Neversong, formerly Once Upon a Coma, is a psychological adventure game developed by American indie studios Atmos Games and Serenity Forge. The game is a sequel to Thomas Brush's flash game Coma, and was initially aimed for release on Microsoft Windows and Nintendo Switch in September 2018, and for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in early 2019. However, creator Thomas Brush pushed back both dates to 2019 so he could… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

It may not be for everyone as it deals with sensitive topics such as death, coma and the loss of a loved one. Price too little high if we consider the game and the DLC. 9/10 my rating
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Neversong review No song of substance Neversong, the follow-up game from Atmos Games, creators of Pinstripe, is based on an original flash game that went by the name of Once Upon a Coma. Neversong deals with themes of loss, loneliness, and madness, as it places the player in the role of a young boy who wakes up from a coma in a strange world after his girlfriend has been kidnapped. Armed with a meagre load of childhood tools, he must battle strange monsters while trying to find and save his…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What a shame, I really liked the first game, and this had a lot of the cool feel of it. But it's clunky, buggy and frustrating. Boss fights are easy and not a challenge (except when the bugs make you win them over and over to continue), but the swinging and jumping just doesn't work right, you end up doing the most mundane challenges over and over. I'm not sure I'd be as harsh if I hadn't looked up the bugs I was running into and finding people complaining about them 4 years ago.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As much as I wanted to, I can't really recommend this game. It definitely has some good parts; the art style and sound design are both really well done and I can appreciate some of the zanier bits of humour, but the rest of it just falls a bit flat. Combat is extremely one note, most enemies are so weak that you can afford to just run up to them and smack them, getting reliably healed up once they die without any real effort or strategy, even into the late game. The 'power ups' are extremely…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to like this game. The art is clean, the voice acting is good, and I enjoyed the dark undertones. But it's just way too simplistic and easy. The bosses even give you health with a special attack. The story is equally simplistic, and some of the dialogue is downright cringe - specifically Simeon (fat kid) and Punky (weird kid). I can appreciate the effort the devs put into this, but it seems like the writing and game design were phoned in.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm not the biggest fan of Thomas Brush the person (his overpriced game dev seminars and general attitude weird me out). However, I do find him interesting as an artist and Neversong is a game I was quite compelled by. A short, but effective experience with solid gameplay (fair difficulty, fun puzzles and boss fights) and a good story that is clearly personal to Brush and balances charming humor and eerie atmosphere very well. I enjoyed my time with this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm a huge fan of Pinstripe, the previous game of this developer, but I didn't enjoy Neversong at all. The story didn't grab me, the platforming is frustrating, the puzzles are way too easy and there's way too much running back and forth between area's you've already visited. Even the boss fight are bad, the final boss most be the most boring battle I've played in many years. Last but not least the game has no options other than volume controls. You can't even change the language of the game,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Coma was my favorite game on newgrounds back when I was a kid. Over the years I would go back and revisit the game whenever I could and would give the sound track another listen. I loved the mystery, the vibes, and the simplicity. I discovered Neversong had released as a sequel of sorts and was stoked to play a fully realized sequel to one of my favorite flash games. Now I honestly wish I hadn't. Neversong wholly ♥♥♥♥♥ on the foundation Coma had laid out. There are "returning" characters in…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bought this on sale but it was worth more then full price. From the beginning you given a mystery that needs to be solved, and as I interacted with the game I found myself getting emotionally invested. Everything from the atmosphere to the characters to the writing, oh my goodness the writing was superb! It had elements of self-awareness that had me lmao-ing, which helped to lighten the darker themes explored through the story. The game isn't long(only took me a few hours to finish the main…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game reminds me of Zelda. You play one area/dungeon, ending with a boss, then on to the next and so on. The game is a spiritual successor of Coma (which I've never played), so maybe it's similar to that as well? The game's a puzzle, platformer and some light metroidvania. You unlock items that enables you to progress further, and you can also back track to collect trophies. There's some light combat going on. The game is not very hard, making it perfect to unwind after a day of work. The…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Terrible scripting. You have to do everything in the predetermined order. Found this item before you were supposed to? Too bad, you have to go through a bunch more tedious steps to find the clues to where it is before you're allowed to pick it up. The world state also resets in ways that are really immersion breaking. Bad storytelling and inconsistent tone. The skateboard and umbrella are super underused and don't make the backtracking any less boring or slow.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dull and repetitive experience. Weak gameplay, a story with a decent idea but a stupid ending. Extremely short and forgettable.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I highly HIGHLY recommend this game! To anyone that loves Alice: Madness Returns and Little Nightmares, PLAY THIS!!!! You will not regret it! I loved the music and the art style the whole time!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fun quick game with an interesting story. You get some upgrades, beat some bosses, and find out what happened. The art style is great; very clean. The sounds and music lend themselves to the game's atmosphere. I was a little frustrated with the extra stuff after beating the game. I had to replay some of the game to unlock a few extras. Would have been nice to just let me load in the beginning area and do this stuff without having to get some upgrades. Overall, happy with the game. I think the…

unlabelledView post →So I absolutely loved Pinstripe. The art, the music, the story, it was wonderful. Of course I was excited to play Neversong! Unfortunately, it just didn't hit the mark for me. The story is lackluster and simple, the puzzles are more annoying than fun, the ending isn't satisfying, and the boss combats are soooooooooo boring. I'm not happy I spent the money on this. It's more of a $5-$8 experience than $15. Buy it when it's on sale, but not at full price.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Could be worth buying on a 75% off sale, probably not worth the full price. Has some glitches here and there, but nothing that interferes much with the gameplay. Story is fairly predictable in a "spooky storybook" way, which has its charm. Voice acting is good. The swinging elements were kind of fun, and the art style is nice! Some puzzles are good, although one of the puzzles require a lot of back-and-forth walking that gets boring quickly.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I got to the final boss of Neversong and died cause I had low health going into the fight and now my game keeps crashing and I can't even get into the file select screen 😭
unlabelledView post →Games main menu does not work properly. Can't navigate it using mouse or keyboard. From the "Full Time Game Dev" himself, Thomas Brush, you'd think the main menu would work without issue.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the most pleasant surprises of my library. Bought it basically on the strength of the cover-art alone and do not regret it. Certainly this has to do with my three main genres being adventures, puzzle-games and platformers and this being a visually pleasing puzzle-adventure platformer, but it's also good at being that. Much recommended. Needs from 5 to 8 hours for a first run-through (and invites more).
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of those games that makes me wish Steam had a "neutral" rating option. The story is good, everything else is okey. But it's also in the same market as Ori and Hollow Knight. For a rather similar price. I did however get it on a sale, and I do appreciate games that I can finish in an evening. I would recommend the game is on sale, and you're looking for something short and sweet.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game's story is very sad.. but it is one of my favorites. I have it on my Nintendo Switch as well. If you like adventure puzzle type games with great soundtracks you'll love this as much as I did.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is sadly very mediocre at best. I don't even put this review as a positive or a negative, it just felt rather lackluster and left me unsatisfied with its end. And as someone who adores Pinstripe, I was really hoping I'd get the same feel from this game, but that isn't the case. While the music and art is amazing as ever, the gameplay was wonky and some of the puzzles were frustrating to get through. Once you know what you're doing (which can be fairly quick), the boss fights are…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I loved this game with its creepy vibe, mixing eerie visuals and goofy immature humor that made me laugh. The story’s short, which is great if you’re an adult looking to actually finish a game. It’s simple, memorable, and perfect for a quick, fun gaming session. Highly recommend Neversong.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Had heard of this game a few times; was reintroduced after watching one or two Thomas Brush videos on Youtube. Overall, I'm not very impressed. First, the positive: Art was interesting. Not amazing, but interesting. Piano functionality was fun. Honestly, not much else. The negative, then: Storybook elements were a little over-the-top. Story didn't feel fleshed out enough, while attempting to portray some big narrative. Character designs were alright, but not very memorable. A big one: the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have also played Pinstripe, I like these games. I don't feel like they are masterpieces or anything, but they convey their message in a better way than most pretentious indies. Also, they don't fall in the mistake of putting in some half baked gameplay to not be a walking sim, since they decide to be a platformer they take care of being a serviceable one, and I respect that a lot. If I have to complain of one thing, is that this game doesn't have options. Like any option. That's not a thing…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →3/10 unable to finish the game cause of bugs. Stuck outside the asylum hey peet i dont think were supposed to be here yet but i cant back track outside of the area because of a pile of rocks that im guessing you can break later stop me from hitting all the buttons in time. i looked it up and im stuck.....F not replaying the entire game again.....
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly was expecting tad more from Neversong, but it was ok game, nothing impressive still fun enough little story with it's warning for the weak of the heart or so. If compare it to Pinstripe it surely feels the same, but Pinstripe was better game out of the two overall. Story goes around people going mental and adults become monstrosities while Peet who is main character is looking for her girlfriend that is kidnapped by the rather peculiar Doctor Smile. So starts swinging of bat towards…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I’ve played through Neversong multiple times, not just for enjoyment but to study its game design. The mechanics are simple but extremely polished, and the vine swinging is probably my favorite mechanic in the game. It feels solid, responsive, and satisfying every time you use it. The atmosphere, art, music, and environmental storytelling are also incredibly memorable. There’s a lot to learn from how the game builds its world and delivers its ideas without overcomplicating things. Definitely…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Buggy game mechanics. Skateboard doesnt allows launch you on ramp jumps, and some bosses are cheesable like the second one.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got it as part of a humble bundle because i wanted LISA, and almost mist this gem. ( The 15 euro pricetag is not really justifiable for a 4 hour game, even if its quite good ). The music, artstyle and story are the biggest selling points of the game, heavy on the story. The ending almost made me shed a tear. Overall gameplay was not hard, almost got the no deaths achievement on my first( and only playthrough, the only thing you get on you second playthrough is two/three achievements). Overall i…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is a 10 out of 10. I love the art style, and I especially love the read dialogue. The best part of the game is the spoken dialogue.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game by Thomas Brush! I thought this was an improvement from his previous game Pinstripe. I definitely recommend it, especially on sale. What I enjoyed: - The art style is pretty - The soundtrack is surprisingly catchy! - The puzzles were fun to solve - The animations, hit effect and the overall "juice" of the game is super polished - The bosses were cool most of the times - A short but sweet experience, only took me 4 hours to beat What I didn't enjoy: - Having previously…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really fun, relatively short action adventure with physics puzzles, light metroidvania elements and a great offbeat sense of humor to balance out the dark aspects. I especially loved the boss fights. And, unlike most metroidvanias, it never got overly difficult. Play the demo -- if you like it, you will like the full game. Only some minor complaints: - It can be easy to forget (or not realize) where to go next. A map could've helped, but due to the simple layout I understand why they didn't…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really wish there was a "mixed" option, but I'm leaning negative because I was mostly frustrated and annoyed. The music, sound and art are all great! Lots of charming moments and gimmicks here and there, as well as some great horror elements. My favorites include: - Pinwheels (and most items you can whack). - The granny bird boss. - The Speak-N-Say toy. - Most of the cosmetics. - A playable piano. However, there are a lot of baffling design choices that I couldn't stand: - Your melee…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game frustrated me. Along with the story you want to know, the talented visuals, the very beautiful music and voice acting, we are faced with the "programming miracles" of this game. Bugs where you get stuck in unexpected location places and can't do anything about it. The weird ability to confirm via space instead of enter (and no control selection to change it). If it was a fresh game from an unknown developer, I would raise the topic in the community hub and report some bugs... But I go…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A beautiful game with a deep message, a game that manages to create a rarely seen atmosphere by putting the spotlight on difficult topics such as grief and the nightmares that plague children. Artistically it is a beautiful but short escape into horror. A beautifully crafted little world that draws you in with fantastic visuals. It's dark but full of witty dialogue, strange creatures and great piano music. A boy named Peet is looking for his kidnapped girlfriend Wren. During the game you get…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I remember playing this game in the late 2000's. I was around 10-12. A bit after flash died, I suddenly remembered this game and went hunting to see whatever happened to it, if the creator made anything else. I discovered Neversong and got immediately excited. I thought it was a fantastic remake that told a wonderful story, Of course I have a preference for the "creepy" atmosphere the original carried. I love to see the difference, the growth from just a little 15 minute flash game to this full…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Everything in this game feels like a chore. The art looks polished enough to peak your interest but the game slaps you in the face with everything else. What actually works in this game would better be presented as a graphic novel or even a small scope walking narrative. Controlling your character is a nightmare and makes the platforming tedious. It doesn't help that the level design is extremely simple and that most of the game is empty stretches of walking. The combat consists of one attack…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly, it is frankly astounding that it's taken me this long to review this game. I remember playing the Demo - back when it was gonna be called 'Once Upon A Coma' This is a beautiful game, with fun characters and an interesting story. I highly recommend it, as it's a joy to play.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've watched Thomas Brush on Youtube for years and always thought he was kind of the lovable idiot of the semi-successful game dev world, I also bought Pinstripe and gave it a quick go and thought it was a nice game, but never really got into it. Neversong, on the other hand, is one of the best indie games I've played in years, I'd almost be tempted to say it's a masterpiece. The opening area had me slightly worried with its PT vibes, but once I got past that it had me hooked and I practically…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I find myself coming back to this game a lot. Every now and then, mostly around halloween, I like to sit down and play through this game from start to finish and just soak in the vibes. Probably the best part about this game is the music. The music somehow perfectly captures the feeling you had as a child when going on an adventure during summer. All the little melodies are incredibly memorable and hit me on a very emotional level. The sound design overall is just incredible. There are these…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Neversong opens with a narrated intro of a pair of young lovers, Pete and Wren, who are torn apart when a mysterious "Mr. Smile" abducts Wren. As if following the pages of a gothic children's picture book, Pete sets out to find Wren and save her from Mr. Smile. The narrative is pretty slim, due to it not only being a game with a potential play time of one hour, but also given its format as largely a platforming adventure. After Wren's abduction, Pete sets about seeking her out by looking for…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Incredibly lack luster. Surprised ppl like it as much as they do.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I haven't finished it yet but I love it! The calming, cheerful music against the bizarre, slightly dark story is perfect. I love all of the characters, the setting...I can't wait for the ending to ruin me lol Edit: The ending makes no sense when you try to tie the ending to the beginning. I wouldn't recommend it but I also wouldn't tell anyone not to play it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a great game. I really enjoyed the art style, atmosphere and the music. The game is also very fun and has a quirky sense of humor. It's also really cool seeing a vocally Christian indie game developer who makes really interesting and sometimes pretty dark games.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really good game, I love how the tone changes slowly over the story. The bosses are really fun, not too challenging but not too easy. Overall a beautiful game, with a sad an yet wonderful story.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Extremely tedious and annoying at times, holding A or D, going back and forth and awful repetitive platforming. I had a better time playing the original version (Once Upon a Coma), and I'd argue the visuals were better in the old one too.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fairly simple game. Sad story yet bautifully drawn, puzzles are not too complicated and most of the time it is very intuitive to know what you have to do. Haven't finished yet as I got a bit tired of the backtracking. Will come back to it as I believe I should be around midway through. Had a few issues playing this with a controller as some button mappings did not automatically match. Other than that good stuff.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you played the original Flash game like I did, you will love this. So far, this game has taken me down memory lane back to when I was in 3rd grade. When I had the opportunity at lunch to go to the library and use the computers, when Flash games were popular back then. I would always find myself coming back to this little game called Coma, a game that I could never understand the full story probably because I was too young. I recently played the original flash game on another website, that's…
