60 of 107 · most liked firstThis was one of my most anticipated games of the year and it didn't disappoint. Reading the other reviews on here, I can see why people would complain about difficulty and lack of variety in upgrades...but part of it is the point of the game, that people don't have the patience to get to and see, and dismiss the game after two hours of gameplay. This is a story game, an adventure, disguised as a roguelike. People wanting the Binding of Isaac or Vampire Survivors are going to be disappointed…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Rogue-lite with meta progress in the form of knowledge and hints for its many secrets rather than new weapons or power-ups. The entire journey of this game is solving the mystery to get the good ending - with a twin-stick rogue-lite on the top. IMHO, It's great. It takes place in interesting environments surrounded by quirky characters. If you are someone who likes the idea of a more thoughtful game in a somber world interspersed by puzzles and secrets, and with an overarching mystery to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's not good as a 2D shooter, because the enemy design and variety is terrible, visual clarity is really bad, both because the effects and particles of your attacks obscure enemy bullets, especially if you're using a strong build, the likes of which most players would want to have, and because the enemies are so tiny and sometimes fast-moving that they get lost in the before-mentioned chaos. That's why there's an option that highlights enemies with glowing outlines enabled by default. All…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →More irritating than challenging, backtracking through rooms because of needless dead ends in rooms filled with hard to see bullet traps that remain active even when the enemies are defeated. At one point I went almost 20 rooms in a row without seeing an item or NPC. ZZZ
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Big thumbs up from me Charming roguelike that changes each run, but has a selection of handcrafted rooms, so you can get a feel for where traps, secrets, puzzle solutions and enemies will be located on repeat playthroughs Pros +Chill music +Nice pixel art and animation (even the grass is dancing) +Characters are likeable and remarkably zen seeing as their whole world and existence ends each day +You can have unique builds quite quickly and get given a new super power at the start of each run…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very good first impression. Then it only went downhill. ✔ pure roguelike without roguelite elements (well, almost, because upgrades are unidentified first time you encounter them; afterwards the game tells you what they actually do before you pick/buy them) ❔ plays like bullet hell ❔ time based - at first I thought that the Heat follows you each time you finish a room, but I also saw it moving at other times as well?! for sure when I started playing faster I made a lot of distance from it,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you care about achievement completion, then once you get the second last journal entry for Archie, make a backup of your game files. "Home" and "Safe at Last" are mutually exclusive and hours into the game. If you don't make a backup of your game files to do the other achievement then you'll need to start a new file and grind all the way back up to that point to do it. I realized this after 100%ing the journal and realizing I was locked out of the achievement by the only permanent forking…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →3 hours of pain, then a refund request. This game has the most insanely frustrating game design I've seen in ages. Most enemies and obstacles are too small or unassuming to parse before there's nothing to be done about them. On paper, this game should rank easier compared to others in the same vein, but the design choices are so unfair I have no interest in engaging with it's systems and honing strategies and skill.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →pretty charming little roguelite, the only con is the amount of upgrades. Played for just over an hour and have 50% of them already. Other than that very fun, its a simpler version of noita.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Suffers the fate of a lot of roguelites, not enough variation per run. Prepare to see the same power ups over and over. Sprites are nice, game is dull and slow. Bullet traps littered around rooms are more irritating than fun to avoid. Seems like it has something that could be interesting as the story has a time loop thing going on where everyone remembers everything, however this is sadly marred by the game being so dull.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →PLEASE PLAY THIS GAME. I bought this one sale (like I usually do with video games), and so for me it cost 6$. Do NOT look up any information or spoilers on this game. I will give you a rough idea on what to expect and why remaining spoiler free is very important. I have recently played a game called "TUNIC" where the entire game is one giant puzzle, with good game play on top of it. This game accomplishes the same thing with different methods. Beyond the Long Night is a roguelike where…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's certainly not bad but it's incredibly mundane, slow, boring and at times quite tedious. I started on Hard mode but really realized I wasn't having fun around the 8h point so I went casual and just beat it. It's got a lot of interesting ideas and some small puzzle elements but overall it was a snore. It is incredibly poorly optimized, takes forever to load and generate a map, and even with a couple upgrades you get stutters and slowdowns on a good PC. If you must play this, wait for like…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cute game, worth giving a try at the current price point. Would definitely recommend leveraging the highlight enemies option the dev made me aware of in his response, made a huge difference for visual clarity. PRE EDIT REVIEW Game loop isn't bad, but really suffers from visual clarity issues. Enemies get lost in the busy backgrounds and mountains of bullets. Also missing rebindable controls (especially the ones attached to mouse) If they update with some enemy border and control options…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →2.5/5 – Almost made the cut Fun and charming roguelike with decent controls, unique powers, and adorable pixel art... but also plagued by RNG frustration, unbalanced combat, and a disappointing endgame. It's also not worth full price ($18) with only 3 levels and 1 boss. =====The Good===== Variety of Powers – A handful of unique superpowers and passive abilities. Good Controls – Movement, dodging, and shooting all feel smooth and responsive. Charming Visuals – Gorgeous pixel art with a cute,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is literally my favorite roguelike / roguelite of 2023. It's a roguelite where the meta progression IS A FREAKING STORY! There are so many secrets/ and so the point of the game is to figure out the "main secret" to "escape" and the stories that are told over the course of many playthroughs is amazing. I wish this game had gotten another update or two to add more variety but otherwise this game made me feel more emotions than almost any roguelike has ever done. I filmed an entire let's…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Let me start off by saying I'm a huge fan of roguelikes, by far my favorite genre from Hades, Wizard of Legend to Skul and Curse of the dead gods, playing most roguelikes out there this fits really well - Positives - Easy to pick up, not a very big learning curve so people can feel comfortable after a few runs - A solid amount of items and combinations to create unique and fun builds for just being early in release/development - The story is really interesting fun to learn about and the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't get me wrong! The game is amazing, and there's quite a lot to do, explore, learn, and upgrade! However, a lot of the things in the game is plainly just not made for the average person. Luv me Binding of Isaac, Luv me Wildfrost, Luv me Ravenswatch and other roguelikes, but even though this game is fun, I cant recommend it unless if you're into getting your fingers broken by the mafia. It's less about playing a game, and playing -against- a game. Certain bosses, certain rooms, upgrades…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I play tested this and put in 40+ hours and am stoked it’s finally been released! The music is a bop, the NPCs are endearing with some clever dialogue and puns, and the enemies still manage to stay challenging even after playing for as many hours as I have (I die a lot less now and get much further in runs). I 100%ed the playtest and can’t wait to do the same on the full version. The developer is super responsive. During the playtest, he was very communicative and fixed bugs promptly. He even…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A wonderful indie narrative explore-em-up that captivated me from the beginning to about the 85% completion mark. At this point, there was a little grinding to set up the final run/true ending but well worth it. My only nitpick is once I completed the true end, I discovered some NPC questlines had barely progressed while others were finished five runs before. Although I wanted to grind out the last few storylines, I found it feeling a little like work and didn't want to tarnish my charming,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of the most charming roguelikes I've played since Hades. As I said to my friend - it's a twin-stick roguelike on top, but an exploration mystery to its core. Combat is smooth and almost every run reveals a little bit more about both the world and mechanics. This is a game well worth 100%ing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →4/10 float around and shoot random things. gameplay wise its on the slow and unforgiving side what this game needs is different base weapons so its not the same pew pew every run large amount of backtracking after you go one way to find a dead end. game price is a little high ran into a weird bug once https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3116318211 also ran into a bug well using the randomizer mushroom hat you cant pick that item up you already own it. makes two of that…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A hidden gem. Perfect for busy grown-ups like myself. - Progress is quick - It's easy to feel overpowered - There are secrets to uncover (you'll need to read your journal) - Not too hard, not too easy. Perfect for a relaxed, enjoyable weekend.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The traps really bring this game down. i love a bullet hell dodging game that allows for exploration but the barley visible traps that will snipe you along with the rooms that are just traps feel tedious and cheap. also its 2023 how are you not allowing people to change their controls on controller!!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love how all the negative reviews for this game are people who complain how difficult the game is and only have thirty minutes playtime. That being said this game is charming and cute all in all really having fun with this one.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very very enjoyable game, extremely calming for me somehow even though you'd assume otherwise for a slightly bullet hellish game. I saw nothing about the game going into it and I recommend doing the same, its a great time just sitting down, listening to the music, and seeing what the other that live here all have to say. Very VERY much recommend you buy it After beating what I believe to be is the "True ending", I still very VERY VEEERRY much recommend buying this game, it is so damn good. You…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While playing this game, you feel the love, that is put into the whole story in it. Beyond the Long Night is a big dark but lightful Roguelite, which doesn't have to hide for its competitors. The goal sounds simple: fight through many rooms in the Dark Mountain to reach the overworld. I made some friends while going through all these caverns and each of them tells you his/her own story and keeps continuing to inform you about everything, even after you died. Solve puzzles, fight different…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great vibe, very poor gameplay balancing. Hardly feels like a game at all, more like an exercise in patience.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you're into these kinds of roguelites and have played dozens/just about all the more popular ones worth playing, do what I did and take a small chance. I'm glad I did because this one stuck with me because it's got all those familiar parts of a fun and worthy roguelite that you want and expect to be done decently or better, but it's also strangely (in a pleasant/interesting way) unique and leaves you with this odd feeling of nostalgia mixed with satisfaction and anxiety haha.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Short, simple but fun, filled with a secret storyline making it worth it - but only when there's a discount or part of a bundle. Pretty easy, not too sure why the negative comments say it's too hard
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fantastically well designed game to add to the KBU genre of games, like the beloved Outer Wilds and Tunic game. Give the game a couple of hours, and you will see if it's your cup of tea or not.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A pretty charming and fun roguelike game. It may seem frustrating and unfair to some when starting out, but after you get used to it, it's very fun to play and is (admittedly) pretty addicting!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not sure what the hate is about. This is like an un-ugly Binding of Isaac, but with story components similar to Hades and some pretty decent puzzles. Plenty of reason to push past the first win, so it's not just a one and done. If you are looking for chill twin-stick shooter, you really can't go wrong.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game does not know what it wants to be........in my experience this game is not "Fun" at all its more boring, I was half falling sleep. I get that this is someones passion project but for "TINY ROUGE" to praise this game is an insult. TINY Rogue is leagues beyond this. I can play Tony ROUGE for hours and keep wanting to do that "ONE MORE RUN" I love it. I was hoping this would give me the same vibe and well, it falls flat. The fact you can't touch the sides in most areas, its…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can't get over how charming this game is. Been playing for 15+ hours in the demo and playtests already, and now I can finally actually go beyond the long night!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Love this game. It is challenging but fun. The characters you come across a big highlight for me
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm pretty sure I have played every single game on that list. My ordering would be WAYYYYYY different. May I interest you in these roguelites not on the list: Beyond the Long Night Haste Hellclock Madshot Oblivion Override OTXO Ovis Loop Realm of Ink Tape to Tape Yasha: Legends of the Demon Blade
unlabelledView post →It's ok. Cute little game with some cool tunes. Has a nasty habit of crashing on me but I'll go ahead and assume that it's a 'me' problem.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A nice and charming little roguelike. Nothing groundbreaking mechanically but fun nonetheless.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Storm spread is retarded. Simply put, you have an unstoppable force pressurizing you into making quick decisions and rush through, where this is clearly a game that you want to enjoy. This feature, while you can slow it down, cannot be switched off. You can't be slow, you can't be picky, because that red thing is gonna f*ck you over. I think that is a terrible choice of design, one that sucked the enjoyment out of the game for me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really neat game. Hard, but you'll keep coming back for more. There's a lot to explore and discover. Lots of lore, and every run unlocks new things. Combat is simple but fun, and upgrades allow you to become very powerful if you survive long enough. The developer listens to feedback and implements requested features. A few upgrades may need rebalancing as they aren't great, but otherwise the game is fine.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Easily one of the best roguelikes I've ever played. The combat is fun and engaging, the characters are charming and witty, the story and philosophy are deep and meaningful, and the stellar music provides quite the atmosphere. The dev has already updated with some wonderful QoL changes based on early player feedback and recommendations. If you're looking for a fun game where you can enjoy a challenge, but take things at your own pace, this would be a great one to check out!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is incredible. Everything from the music to the fun characters you meet as the story unfolds. I like that you can play for 20 minutes and still have fun. I've been playing every now and then while I'm taking a break from work or even taking a break from another game. I find this game very relaxing (and sometimes a little stressful). I would highly recommend you give it a try.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Writing here to thank the developer for this game. It is an absolute triumph! A roguelike about situational awareness and tactical thinking to use the environment to your advantage. combined with clever and compelling storytelling. The love is apparent in every frame. Also, the soundtrack/sound design is sublime! Congrats! Well done! and Thank you! PS: There seems to be a lot of sentiment about how it's too hard, or things are readable. If you go too fast you'll run into this…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoyed it, kind of short and a little frustrating regarding enemy sizes, but overall a charming and fun game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played it at WASD and fell in love with it! The sound is beautiful and the character floating with balloons is just visually pleasing to look at. Looking forward to playing more soon!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very fun game and amazing sound design and music. Really enjoying it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beyond the Long Night, developed by Noisy Head Games and published by Yogscast Games, is a charming yet challenging twin-stick roguelike that takes players into a mysterious underground world full of color, melancholy, and quiet wonder. At first glance, its whimsical art style and gentle music suggest a lighthearted experience, but beneath that cheerful surface lies a surprisingly tense and emotional adventure. The game begins with your nameless character awakening deep within the Dark…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A true hidden gem rougelite. I've had a blast with this game! would put it in the B tier as a solid rougelite worth putting 10 to 20 hours into to enjoy! Has customizable difficulty options for those worried about challenge.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Peepee Poopoo ^_____^
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun game on Deck, cute atmosphere. Most of my playtime is offline. A bit challenging
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i wish i could say something good but the lack of progression and even using the custom dificulty on my favor it isnt enough to make a diference on your gameplay.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Randomly running into a dead ends can kill you because rooms become uninhabitable over time. Even if the cows were twice as cute it would overcome how unfun that feeling is.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A quick and easy game to pick up. It may not be for everyone, but it's a game that you can spend a couple minutes or a couple hours playing. It's a decent rogue-lite that makes me want to bang my head against a wall.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Look at the top rated negative review, perfectly describes my feelings
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ultimately there's just not enough variety. It has a fun game loop, but it's more minimalistic than the marketing makes it seem. I would say it's like Inside in that it IS great, it's just a lot less content than I expected.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As the explorer, you wake up with nothing but a hat and a gun. You will meet Pickles who is playing a guitar by the fire and gives you a brief primer. He also provides you with a superpower. In fact, you meet Pickles every time you die except it is always the first time. The first time or the 100000th time, the goal is still the same: reach topside which means, you generally want to head in an up direction. As you move from room to room, you have to deal with enemies, traps, and puzzles.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Finally a roguelite that challenges again! Much of the negative reviews originate from a skill issue. I remember early days with the vanilla isaac games being very difficult. - Synergies are great - Difficulty is a nice change of pace - The Long Night is a nice twist on the Spelunky ghost mechanic. It gives enough leeway to go exploring and upgrade yourself but doesn't let you linger aimlessly. This is that something that Isaac doesn't do well, it lets you go backtrack a lot when you wan't…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Business finished.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game revolves around a balloon obsessed character that wants to escape a hole in the ground. Filled with secrets and has great replayability, still not done while writing this. Only downside as of right now is the lack of upgrades, causing majority of runs to be reliant on at least one kind of upgrade / superpower
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoyed this game, I just finished my first run at about 8 hours in which isn't too bad. The gameplay is enjoyable, with a solid gameplay loop. It could use some more interesting upgrades because a lot of them are just different iterations of the same one. But overall it's still fun. One thing I would change though, especially with the amount of backtracking that is required during a run, is that traps should deactivate after a room is completed. EDIT: After playing this game some more…
