positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of the most enjoyable mystery games I've played by far. From start to finish, the game had my hooked. The characters, story, music and visuals were all stand-outs and will stay with me for a long, long time. Story I found the story to be utterly compelling. Everything felt grounded in history but with a little bit of anachronistic levity to keep things enjoyable and far less oppressive. As an avid mystery fan, I was thrilled by the stories of each chapter as well as the overall…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Steam Autumn Sale is on. Last week I played Murders on the Yangtze River, a detective game set in China in the early 1900s. It's a phenomenal indie Phoenix Wright-like that I think you should absolutely play and it's 35% off: store.steampowered.com/app/1746030/... /cc @spacetwinks.bsky.social

unlabelledView post →First of all, this game is less a 'diamond in the rough' as it is a geode. If you are unwilling to extend a little grace and patience, this game will grate on you quickly. The first time you open the game, all the menus are in Chinese and you have to search your way into the options to change it to English. The localisation is also distracting from the very start, with frequent lapses in grammar and syntax. Couple that with a very a misleading artstyle, it might initially convince you that this…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Holy hell this is the first video game I've played that's given me the same feeling after finishing it as I get after finishing a really good novel. That feeling where I'm satisfied but also not because I just want to stay in this world with these characters for as long as I can. All of the main cast were so carefully crafted, and everything in the story slowly builds up to the big realisation. Even having the background knowledge that I do regarding the main historical problems discussed in…

unlabelledView post →I was intrigued by this game and was really wanting an Ace Attorney adjacent game since I really liked the original AA games but they are not really that much fun these days because they got a little watered down and repetitive. The gameplay is very intuitive and actually adds one or two mechanics that enhance the immersive aspect of the game and lets you get into the investigation a little more than in other detective games I have played. There is also no walking around searching for people…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is, quite simply, an absolute A-star game that will draw you in with its gorgeous visuals, well crafted complex characters, and enthralling plots (and plot twists), plus I really like the extra side of multiple historical snippets that you collect throughout the game. If you ever enjoyed Pentiment (the Renaissance "Name of the Rose" murder mystery) but wanted something set in the far east, this is your game; trust me. My only complaint is that it is not longer, not because it is a short…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Saw this game on sale and decided to try it out. Best decision of my life. Instead of independent cases with no relation to one another, they all ended up being connected in a nice, seamless way. It introduced new characters, explained relationships with previous, already known characters, and connected past cases to new ones. There are no supernatural elements to the story; all plot devices are seemingly realistic and grounded. I would say my favourite chapters were Chapters 4 and 6.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I thought the game was better than Ace Attorney. I love that the cases don't have any supernatural explanations to them, the incorporation of historical facts into the story, and the beautiful visuals. I'll definitely keep buying if they continue this series
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was hooked right from the very start! This game is a detective game, and you get to run around crime scenes, pick up clues, and question suspects like a real sleuth. Each case has its own tricky puzzles and little surprises, and I loved that super satisfying feeling when everything finally clicked. As I got deeper into the story, I realized there was this bigger, shocking mystery connecting all the cases. If you’re into mystery, detective work, and historical stories, this game is an absolute…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Murders on the Yangtze River is a nice detecetive game I played. It is a tribute to the Agatha Christie book Murders on the Orient Express. Game has a lot going for it. Setting is in 1910 or 1907 in China. A super nice setting where it seems China was on the cusp of change and on the verge of drastic change. Gameplay design was good. The individual puzzles feel intuitive and quite straightforward to solve; also felt interesting. While everything is in the room to find, the clues are…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An excellent Pheonix Wright-like set in early 1900:s China. At first I found the "chibi" style of the characters when you walk around and search for clues was a bit jarring compared to the pretty violent cases and the excellent highly detailed still images that where in all the dialogue sequences, but it's not a big deal. The setting was interesting and had a nice touch with the historical facts. games that want to educate you about the history in the setting is always nice to see. Great…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It’s pretty obvious this is another overrated game with reviews flooded by Chinese players. The worst thing a detective game can do is constantly throw in leaps in clues or plot progression, without properly balancing the information gap between the writer and the player. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A really solid Ace Attorney like game. I'd argue that in some ways it's better. You get tidbits of history throughout the game. Sure, the logic is still a little goofy and far fetched but not any more than the Ace games. There are some minor issues with navigation feeling sluggish, and audio bugs on rare occasion. There are simple puzzles that break things up and keep the gameplay from getting monotonous. I love the hint system. I feel like sometimes with this style of game a simple oversight…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →@thevoiceofdog.bsky.social After watching your streams, I bought Murders on the Yangtze River. Turns out, there's unique game overs if you accuse the joke option, at least in the first two cases. Afu also repeatedly tries to interrogate animals.
unlabelledView post →What a wonderful game! I was pulled into its world without even realising it. I would sit down for a bit and suddenly hours had passed. I am still a bit shocked it took me 22hrs to finish it. It didn't feel that long at all.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is clearly a big homage to the Ace Attorney series, and it's rather well done at that. It is difficult to come close to the plot twists, absurdity and drama of the original series, but this game is a fair attempt at that in a very different setting. If you are at all into murder mystery games, this game is well worth a playthrough. And if you played Ace Attorney series before, you will surely smile broadly at all the tiny references.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A lovely and engaging murder mystery game in the same vein as Ace Attorney. Clearly a labor of love by a group of game developers who both love the crime genre as well as Chinese history. Provided together with the games are historical facts and crime concepts that were interesting to read as an aside to the main story. The game is brimming with atmosphere, and the developers really make China magical. The story is good, and more connected than Ace Attorney. The world is also freer to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I had never played Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney games when I played this. This game was so good. I played it with my kids watching, and they got really involved. The plot was put together very well, and the denouement sequences felt intense at times, in a suspenseful, fun way. Then I tried Phoenix Wright, and just couldn't get past the 3rd case. Maybe the later games in that series are good, but Yangtse makes that game feel more outclassed than Silksong makes Metroid on the NES feel. Hmm....…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's such a MASTERPIECE! I wish this game would never end. The characters are amazing, the cases incredibly interesting. Not to mention the overall story, beautiful art and the facts we can learn playing. I honestly don't know if any game will ever beat this one in my eyes I hope SO MUCH that there will be a continuation someday
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As an Ace Attorney fan, I appreciate how this game has its own distinctive take on the genre. As a history buff, I really enjoyed how the game creatively incorporated elements of Chinese history and culture into the various cases. The storyline was not only engrossing and suspenseful, but also enabled me to learn numerous interesting historical facts about the late Qing Dynasty. Similar to Ace Attorney, the cast is likeable and includes a variety of memorable, humorous and eccentric characters.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is two things. It's like an Ace Attorney set in 1900s China, and it is a historical showcase of the time. The artwork and the overarching story capture the nostalgic and at the same time uncertain period of China emerging into the current era and its interaction with the outside world. The artwork is gorgeous, especially during the travel scenes of zoom out when the game is showcasing the environment in cities, villages, and rivers. The voice acting and translations worked…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolutely fantastic game. Unlike most detective games this one gives you the Ah Ha! clever feeling moments. It's also very long for the genre and genuinely interesting all of the way through.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Through sheer persistence and a rudimentary knowledge of Chinese, I managed to brute-force my way through the DLC and unlock that one pesky achievement. 成功! ORIGINAL REVIEW For those of us who can’t read Chinese, 100%-ing this game is near impossible as one achievement is tied to a DLC that hasn’t been translated yet. That’s a real shame because the base game is amazing. It’s not as lofty as the Ace Attorney Trilogy it draws inspiration from, but it has plenty of history, humor and complex…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not done yet- but this game is fantastic if you love Phoenix Wright type games. It's got history, simple murders, with satisfying progression and case solving. I just beat Chapter 3, and I love it. It's not flashy- but it's extremely satisfying. Update: Not only does the writing and the (wow) art-style shifts from fantastic to second-string hires in the later parts, but the translation goes from a few grammatical issues, to almost feeling like it went through Google Translate. Despite all…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its a tightly bound and personal story. All the 5-6 cases have unique scenerios, circumstances and pair dynamics. All the cases has their own message, yet they have a general message that link to the overal message of this game. It is clear the game was made with a lot of passion. They also have english voices for their british characters and has an indian sargeant which is a cool diversity, which is rarely seen in other games depicted in that time period (Industrial Revolution in Asia). I feel…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An absolute hidden gem! I had this game on my list for a while, since I love detective games, but still I was not expecting to be so blown away from something that honestly at first glance seems like "a cute little visual novel". Murders on the Yangtze River is deceptive in its looks - underneath the charming artstyle and gorgeous soundtrack there is a story deeply rooted in real Chinese history with interesting, compelling characters, crushingly heavy thematics and scenes that truthfully had…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As an immense fan of the Ace Attorney series, this game was really satisfying. The story was excellent as were the visuals and voice acting. I highly recommend giving this game a playthrough!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dude i have no words. having played danganronpa and ace attorney years ago, i really wanted that logical murder mystery resolving feeling again. Murders on the Yangtze River did it perfectly, alongside very intersting stuff about the cultural aspects of 20 century china, it was a joyful experience learning all that stuff. game is fueled by humor, drama, tension, it has all! It must be even more pleasant playing this game as a chinese person, as this game is cleary a love letter to China too.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun Chinese Historical Ace Attorney with good English localization. Highly recommended to enjoyers of those kinds of games
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent game! The translation is a little rough in places, but the mysteries are all very solid! I would happily play a sequel.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Murders on the Yangtze River trailer leans into quiet, painterly frames; even a slow zoom feels deliberate. Have you seen a game trailer that made you pause just to look at the art direction? #DigitalArt https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adkV2H3oAas
unlabelledView post →This game is a love letter to the murder mystery and case solving genre, right in the main menu they list a lot of their inspirations, and I think this game is a wonderful tribute to all those titles. If you like Ace Attorney especially, you will definitely enjoy this game, but any murder mystery including Danganronpa as well, if you like them you will enjoy this game. The characters are fun and pretty interesting, and it also includes a lot of interesting information about history.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You can tell there was so much love and attention put into this game, from the historical details to the costumes. The setting is so unique and completely transported me to a place and time I knew absolutely nothing about. And oh my god, the overarching case of the dead brother had me GAGGED I stayed up all night finishing that case because I HAD to know what happened. Just can't recommend enough and I can't wait to see what these creators do next!!!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very nice game. The story is so nicely plotted as if i am witnessing a movie
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS ONE The investigation mechanics and detective aspects are incredibly satisfying, but it's the narrative that truly steals the show. While the game starts strong, chapters 3, 4, 5 & 6 with the ending climax take the tension to an entirely new level! The story becomes an absolute thriller that kept me on the absolute edge of my seat. The narrative is beautifully arranged and many different climax scenes it really shines a lot! On top of the phenomenal writing and pacing,…

unlabelledView post →Overall good game. Visuals are 2D without many motion effects but it does build up the world very well - reflecting the looks of multiple different cities in China at that historic moment when the country was colonized. Audios are very well designed with traditional Chinese elements. The story itself is good and fit the history well. If you have played Ace Attorneys, you can clearly sense that this game is inspired by the series, especially The Great Ace Attorney series. I played Murders…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A more grounded Ace Attorney game, that is also a period piece of early 1900s China. Featuring a detective who has The One Case He Couldn't Solve, his brother's death three years ago. He's still very much obsessed with it, but keeps it lowkey. Some fine details are lost in translation, but overall the game has great atmosphere, and the cases are pretty good too.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played the full game, and as somebody who loves (and thus can be critical) of murder mysteries and the detective genre, while I have criticisms, I overall really enjoyed and felt satisfied playing this game. PROS: - This is a beautiful game. The backgrounds are beautifully painted and show lovely detail. The iron works is definitely one of my favourite places due to watching the gears move in utter fascination. A blend of simplistic 2D art and the brush style made things pop out more and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty good game! You can definitely feel the Ace Attorney vibes from it. The gameplay is pretty simple, but the plots are definitely complex. It starts out small with Chapters 1 and 2, but it gets way bigger as the story goes on. At some points in the finale, they kind of start putting in new gameplay mechanics that might have been better if they were incorporated earlier (and some that come out of nowhere), but generally the game is good. I really like the characters, though! Especially…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really fun gameplay and great narrative. A true love letter for anyone who enjoyed the Ace Attorney series.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A good visual novel. Has a lot of fresh mysteries that were fun to uncover. The music was pretty good and the voice acting is very charming at certain parts. The addition of historical tidbits also helped with understanding the story better.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The logic flows well. The plot twist is unexpected and fun. Easily one of the best detective games I have played. Loved the glossary with all the facts and knowledge snippets on history and science. China has really come a long way. Looking forward to the DLC.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really did enjoy this detective game! This is also charming, especially the setting is in the 20th century China! Each case had its own uniqueness and I never thought all the cases would actually link together to another new mystery!! There were also good plot twists, secrets and mysteries... which I did not expect at all. I would wish there were more games like this one.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolutely fabulous story and characters. The inclusion of historical facts and tidbits was fascinating and brought a lot to the whole experience. Highly recommend!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Games like this raise a question between what is a homage with its own elements and what is copying a formula with a different skin - In this case, many commenters have accurately noted that this game directly copies many elements of the Ace Attorney series, but after completing Murders on the Yangtze River it became more apparent from the final chapter of the game. Keeping it spoiler light, the final chapter has many elements taken directly from Ace Attorney, right down to having to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Perhaps the best Ace Attorney inspired game I've played, much as I love others in this genre. And a must have for any Great Ace Attorney fan.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun for people who enjoy Ace Attorney, cases are well thought out. I do believe that almost every case has a very refreshing gimmick (except maybe the second), and there is an overarching story throughout the whole game, much like the Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. Some twists you can see coming from miles away, I'd say this is more apparent in the earlier cases.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I definitely recommend this game to fans of detective stories. I got a great deal of enjoyment out of playing it. The overarching narrative is engaging and intricate, and the individual cases along the way are compelling as well. The difficulty level is well balanced — challenging enough to stay interesting, but the correct solutions don’t always come to mind on the first try (at least not for me 🙂). The atmospheric soundtrack, the collection of interesting facts, and the main characters are…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It started at a very nice elegante point where you enjoy a cozy detective game with lots of historical facts and you can enjoy learning cultural facts as well but I really didnt enjoy the last chapter and the one before that because the stories are not executed well and it felt too forcefull not realistic at all. Sometimes the flow of dialogues are too boring because of so many unnecessary details that makes you enjoy less
