Last Year at Marienbad
At a weekend gathering, a man tells a woman that they had spent time there together a year prior. But, the woman has no recollection whatsoever and is convinced that he is simply fabricating the encounter. The more he speaks about their activities the previous year however, the more compelling he becomes. The question remains however – did they meet previously or not? From TMDB

(Now she did do a COUPLE of films after that but nothing much, stopped entirely in 1971, so yeah. The butcher's wife!) BEST STORY

Real ambiguous tale for a film indeed

positive · AI labelView post →I am an utter ruffian. I am so angry at having to sit through Last Year at Marienbad (1961). If the woman was genuinely this much larger than the man throughout I may have been placated. The film lasted a year which is impressive for a 94 minute feature. Apologies. I just can't handle my own hate.

neutral · AI labelView post →Last Year at Marienbad is worth seeing. I consider it a horror movie. A horror movie about a woman who did not have a romance last summer, not here, not at marienbad. She is haunted. The glamorous inn, which is not Marienbad, is haunted. By her. By him. By the statues. By the empty hallways.

I think Resnais was *trying to build the machine*. His film is the hologram. You, the viewer, become the novella’s protagonist. 2/
