positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was the year 2000 and I was seven, or maybe eight. My mom took me with her to work since I had a day off school and they didn't want to leave me alone (it's a long story - I was a pyromaniac as a child.) Her boss led me into a little side room deep in the office with a single crappy PC that looked like it was definitely from the late 90s, nothing up to date at all. He showed me this game and asked if I knew how to install it. I said yes and spent the next few hours playing this game, until…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a connoisseur of Kangurek Kao games, I am convinced that the first installment of this series is by no means for babies. The clumsiness of camera controls and movement, lack of clues, terrifying monsters that cannot be eliminated permanently (unless we use a flying glove) and the agony cry of a kangaroo when it falls endlessly sends a shiver down the spine. The challenge itself is to complete the game, not to mention finding all the hidden rooms, bonus levels and all the ducats. The only…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →even though this series is my childhood i never had any connection with the first game and for a good reason i thought this would be a cool game, but what the hell is removing the save file when getting a game over? tate multimedia couldve atleast made some changes like giving the player an option of playing the original version, and playing a game that doesnt remove your progress because you couldnt see how much far into a jump you were it couldve been where you just go back to the main menu…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Jesus christ just make it widescreen with controller support!!!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very disappointed, I was really hoping this was going to be an upgrade, like Kao Round 2, with modern Resolutions, Achievements, and Controller Support, but this is sadly just the original release of the Game, the same port that's been on Good ol' Games for years. I had to use Steam Big Picture to map keyboard buttons to my controller. That being said, it's still Kao, and I'm glad it's on Steam.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to like this, but I play 3D platformers because usually they're fun and laid back games where you collect things, do little mini games and a bit of platforming that is challenging at times but still pretty fun. I never played Kao the Kangaroo back in 2000, but I did play PlayStation 1 / Nintendo 64 era games of a similar nature. The ugly graphics, a slightly janky camera... more precise platforming that what is needed? ahhh... good times. What I didn't know was that Kao the Kangaroo…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Giving this game to a kid should be considered child abuse
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →you lose your whole ass save file for running out of lives
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's going to be a no for me sorry, There are just to many problems right out of the starting gate for me. First: having no controller support is kinda dumb and with how some of my key on my keyboard are sized/placed it's very sluggish to play the game with them, Second: A lot of things where missing there textures from enemy's, Kao himself, even entire chunks of levels where missing some textures, Lastly: I tried to play with headphones and only the left side was getting any audio. So yeah I…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"Kao the Kangaroo (2000 re-release)" is an ancient game from 2000. It's a whopping 24 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks support for any modern gaming display resolutions (or widescreen monitors), hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an ancient game. This seems to have been put on Steam as a nostalgia gouge, or just a cash grab to try profit from abandonware.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to like this game or at least say this has charm but I couldn’t finish it. I was aware of things like the checkpoint system, while interesting, can really mess up the pace of some levels. or the controls or camera not being the best but they can be handled well. Or those vehicle levels where I die in one hit so I have to move really slow so I don’t die which is a shame cause they were almost good But there were just some things I couldn’t ignore. Like those bonus stages which I…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →nostalgic but damn was it bad
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Didn’t age well, no controller support and the headset only works on one side, but for a 2000 platform game, it's an average game
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sorry no. The game really shows it's age and there are better games out there. My issues were: -I had to remap the controller, -I thought my headphones where glitching since sound only works in one ear, -deaths start you from the beginning of the level though you keep all items you collected, (you can use flags you pick up for check points but its only told to you in the manual. thanks PROMANIA) -the levels with a vehicle one shot you if you touch anything, -there are things you have to run…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →+ when you go in water his neck stretches so he can breath - game over 100% resets the game - no controller support - taking screen shot crashes the game - alt tabbing out crashes the game
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As nice as it was to revisit, and finally beat, a bit of nostalgia from my childhood, the game just isn't that fun. This game has some of the worst hit detection I've ever encountered. Sometimes you can take out an enemy in one hit from a distance, sometimes it takes four attempts for the game to realize you're trying to hit something, even when you're right next to an enemy or breakable box. Attacks work maybe 40% of the time. That, combined with the painfully slow movement speed, level…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really lazy release after all the care and attention that went into the re-release of the second game a few years ago. You literally have to hex edit the exe just to play over resolutions of 1024x768, controller support does not work properly, and there's no achievements or cloud save support which the second game had. Awful, can't recommend unless it eventually gets patched up.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No way man why don't have save slots in 2023? if you lose start the game for the beginning the map and even if it is game over , you start the game again to the 1 level developers didn't even bottler to adapt the game do changes it until then bad grade

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bad Camera and bad controls. Overall it's a terrible game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am quite disapointed by the port. Half of the textures are not loading so it looks really sad.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Kao the Kangaroo 2000 is an old 3D platformer but its worth a try even for its age: Pros: + fun gameplay most of the part for its age + great soundtrack actually the best thing in this game + most maps are fun like 20 out of the 30 + soild graphics for its time + nice looking menu map Cons: - some levels arent really that fun - weird hitbox at enemies like in the snow maps - 2 labyrinth maps (egypt and the seeweed forest ones) are kinda confusing - no steam freatures like Achievements and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty awful steam port of this game. The bare minimum i would have asked for would be controller support, how are you not gonna have controller support for a platformer? Go play Kao 2, that's where the franchise peaked.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fairness This is a platformer game that, for once, actually feels fair. I honestly feel like most platformers I play make me angry at how hard the game is, not because the gameplay itself is difficult, but because the controls are ridiculous, or because the physics don't work in a reasonable way, or just whatever, but this is a game where the controls and everything actually felt good for once, and if I died I thought, "That was on me, I messed up here" rather than "This stupid game is just so…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this is quite possibly one of the best games to have ever been made.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am a 45 yo father, probably one of the oldest people playing this game. I am a single father to my Son, who is 14 now. My son got this game for Christmas in 2021 from his uncle, so we installed it on his computer and he started playing. By the end of the week he had 24 hours on this game. This was horrible for me, as it was already hard for me to find ways to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just watching YouTube. So i decided to make a Steam account and get…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DISCLOSURE: At the time of playing the Kao the Kangaroo games, I had no idea about these games dropping onto Steam and I have no history with these games whatsoever. So, before we begin, I want to make it clear that just because I am going to be criticizing some aspects of the first game and have this review as “Not Recommended,” that does not mean I don’t want you playing this game. I encourage you all to play it for yourselves and come up with your own conclusions. Don’t just take my word on…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Controller not working out of the box and music only playing on left speaker. Rest of the game isn't even fun enough to try to fixing these issues. Just uninstalled. I hope the other two Kao games in the trilogy are less cursed.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →kakao mnie boli od tej gry
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm seeing reviews complaining that there no save slots and you have to restart the game if you game over you can literally save on the level select screen if you press ESC. Kao The Kangaroo is a pretty run of the mill mediocre platformer but quite enjoyable if you like these kinds of games. I played it a bunch on my Dreamcast and can recommend it though the PC port does need better controller support as it reads the analog as an 8 way input and not a full 360.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sick game, I was in remission, but after starting to play the game, the cancer was back! still cool game 10/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →for 2 euro its peak
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Glad I found this series. It looks like an N64 game and plays kind of like a Crash and Croc hybrid. Short game, but some of the later levels get lengthy and the precision jumps will make you want to tear your hair out. 7.5/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Kao the Kangaroo (2000) is a product of its time. Expect some jank and stiff controls. I ended up creating a custom Steam Deck configuration to get it feeling better (Find it in the community presets!). Gameplay has its share of frustrations: hitboxes can be wonky, platforming is occasionally clunky, and boss strategies aren't always clear. The life system is also unforgiving – losing all lives means starting the entire game from scratch. Kao has a certain old-school charm justifying playing…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Despite how cheap this game is, it's not worth it. There's no controller support and overall feels like there was zero thought put into this port despite releasing in 2023. I will happily take my 99 cents back please so I can pay for rent this month.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't have any nostalgia for this game or series (came out a pretty good few years before I was conscious, and never heard of it until the Winter Sale at the time of writing), so unfortunately I can't really recommend this to anyone as anything other than a piece of history, an oddity or if you already have nostalgia for this game. I don't really feel like the Mostly Positive rating is deserved, but maybe the majority sees something I don't (or it's just pure nostalgia...) The "challenge"…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Holy crap is this game horrible. I tried but the camera is aggravating, jumping across pits and ledges are spotty, and hit detection is poor. This game is not worth the headache. Just move on.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First of all, I just want to mention that I'm completely new to the Kao the Kangaroo series and that this review is coming from someone who had never played any game from said series before playing the one I'm reviewing. Anyways, let's get on with the review: Kao the Kangaroo is a platform game developed and published by Tate Multimedia (it was originally published by Titus Interactive - the company behind everyone's favorite Nintendo 64 game, Superman 64 /s) and was released throughout 2000…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Camera makes platforming impossible. I loved Kao 2, was hoping this would be similar. [Product refunded]
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game is straight garbage. there is no way to change the controls which sucks because the only way to move around is with the arrow keys and you only get 3 lives to complete all 10 levels. the only plus is the old school graphics
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What a nostalgia trip, i was 8 when i played this game. Time flies
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have 30 minutes of gameplay just trying to get the game to actually work properly with a controller. Plus the game crashes on tab out with a plethora of other issues. Game probably is okay if you played Kao 2 before but this is just a very very lazily ported, a shame.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No controller support, ancient resolution, defaults to mono for audio for some reason. Had to download an ancient version of .NET to get into the settings menu to change it. They are very literal with 2000 re-release, it wouldn't surprise me if this is the original code. Would not recommend for anyone who didn't play this game as a kid. I love the second game and played through the new one, even wanting to get the special edition before my preorder got cancelled, but I can't imagine new fans…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A challenging but fun tiny platformer, worth playing for such a bargain price. Glad to see it getting a re-release. Even tho it's a 2000 game, luckily the Steam release works out of the box (No 16:9 tho). The only tweaks I needed to do was changing the audio mode to Stereo on the game launcher options and using my controller in Dinput mode rather than Xinput, that one just didn't worked. I believe some people released Steam Input controller layouts, so this might change.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A cute, fun platformer that mimics Crash Bandicoot's gameplay in a way few other games have. Kao himself is such a great mascot, and the game has a big amount of charm to it. There are downsides, such as the tank controls, as well as the vehicle and maze levels. I'm glad I played Kao and may eventually play it again, but the frustrating points do bring it down a tad.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Kao the Kangaroo (2000 re-release) Genre: 3D Platformer / Jump 'n' Run Perspective: 3rd Person My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐🔹 💙Summary (TLDR): This game is a cute little treat within the 3D platformer genre that I reommend giving a try! I grew up with Crash Bandicoot & Spyro the Dragon absolutely loving those two games so finding similar games is always a treat for me. Kao imo isn't on the same level as those two classics but I enjoyed the game for what it is, it's an old gem and brought my…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a nostalgia game that I liked as a kid. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone these days. It is competent at platforming and is weird. Very simple looking back. It was cool to play, but it deleted my save after my unintended steam uninstall.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is more challenging than it may seem, even with the updated controls (the original release used tank controls) and I find myself relying on cheat codes to avoid being sent back to the first level, but it's still the good old Kao that I had played as a kid. The nostalgia factor is strong, so I can't tell if a new player would enjoy this 25 year old game, but I can bet that a returning player will be happy to reunite with the first iteration of our kangaroo after long years. Tip:…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Having played as far as the first boss, I can safely say this game shows its age. Controls are awkward, movement feels uncomfortably sluggish, and the hitboxes border on unfair. Yep, good old 90's style 3D Mascot Platformer. Gotta love 'em. 10/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DRM go play it on Gog
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Havn't seen a game where you can place your own checkpoints before. Definitely hard and RIDDLED with "haha gotcha, start over" moments, including random item markers that have a chance of taking lives away. Hitboxes for enemies are all over the place and you're never sure what is and isn't reachable without taking damage yourself. If you enjoy Crash (Original's) difficulty, this won't be news. I've gotten several game overs. I thought my save data was erased? But for me, I was just blind and…
