59 of 59 · most liked firstAfter completing the game, I have rewritten this review. Also, please see the developer's response to the previous version of this review in the comments as they explain that they plan to make improvements to the game. Kalaban is an interesting game, which unfortunately suffers from the fact that the developers had to release it before it was complete according to their vision. It's still very enjoyable and playable, but you can tell some things could be improved (and according to the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In A Nutshell 🔵 Pros + Decent free-roaming, survival horror gameplay. + No hand holding: players need to figure out everything on their own. + Quests also being "mini-puzzles" based on how to use found items in solving problems. + Sufficient variety of equipment and enemies. 🔴 Cons - A few but significant bugs that can lead to major gameplay disruption / force a reload. - Autosave-only saving system at each area transition, no manual saves whatsoever, not even at fixed points. -…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sorry, Iìm not the type to over criticize indie games or cheap games. But the game is simply too buggy to give some decent fun. I expected a couple of hours of fun, nothing more, but the experience is ruined by the difficulty by some nasty happening: such objects that disappear from inventory and quests that crash. And, overall, it's a shame as I like the atmosphere and the environment, and also the story is pretty good. It's a 5,5/10, only for who have some patient to recover the game from…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Review copy provided by developer via Curator Connect All I really want from a horror game is a unique, effective experience, and the indie scene is generally the best place to find it. I’ve talked at great length about my appreciation for strange and international horror titles, and Kalaban certainly tries to elbow in there with its strange B-horror rendition of the Finnish countryside. It felt like just the kind of experience I was looking for, until the bugs started cropping up. There’s a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Kalaban Kalaban is a horror adventure game which focuses on the main character trying to escape a town where things have gone awfully wrong. Does it manage to creep out the player or becomes another snoozefest, let’s find out: Gameplay: Kalaban starts with the character waking up in an old house to see a werewolf standing on his dresser. He grabs his axe which was just beside his bed to kill down the beast with one swing. Kalaban manages to set up a creepy atmosphere from the get go. The…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Some nice detailed 90s references throughout, reading the game manual gave some good laughs :D
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So this janky horror game has many story decisions where you choose between two options, and some of them make the game unwinnable for no reason with no indicator you can't win. Oh, and it has no manual saving and aggressive autosave. I play for 70 minutes, choose the wrong option, and now I have to restart the game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In it's current state (it just came out at the time of writing this) I find it has too many bugs for me to continue playing it now but I'm still recomending it because the game itself is great. I typically grow bored with most games before beating them but as soon as a few of the major bugs are fixed, I can see myself getting addicted. I've only played for an hour so far but I can tell this is one of those rare games that the developers really put their hearts into. Even if it's buggy (which…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to like this game, but I just couldn't. Writing - Story is bland and boring Dialogue is pretty basic and cringy Atmosphere isn't scary one bit. Graphics are ok, but nothing to write home about. Sound gets really annoying really quickly. Game mechanics make no sense - Food 'hunger' drops so fast you have to constantly eat every 2 seconds. Werewolves drop apples, wut? Fighting isn't fun, feels stiff and lazy. Monsters just walk around like idiots and flail at you every now and then.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unfortunately I cannot recommend Kalaban in its current state (which I believe to be its final state, RIP Kalaban). It's an ambitious Indie game that has horror, top-view, shooter, survival aspects to it. It has a great illustration design, and it reminds me a lot of Stranger Things Season Three. These are all things I love. Unfortunately it crashes frequently, the game gets corrupted nearly immediately, and requires a full install and reinstall to work properly; until it eventually crashes…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This DOES NOT qualify as a game, pathetic This is easily one of the worst games I have ever played. Avoid this joke of a game like the plague, a 5 year old ginger kid with learning difficulties and no sight could do a better job. My Score - 0/10
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game have great music, atmosphere and story. I really liked it, haven't finished it yet but first impression are really good.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Kalaban is a mystery/horror adventure game with a bit of RPG hack 'n slash thrown in. Something terrible has spawned in the world and you must survive and figure out what is going on. Along with the multiple 90's references, it has a certain "Evil Dead" feel to it [url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Z3k9fvJne8] Here's my full review
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This could be a cool indie game but: - extremely limited graphic options - lack of tutorial and as a result crazy pixel-hunting - weird hitbox of hero and monsters - bugs (after leaving and entering same location you'll see the same cutscence while interacting with quest-relating objects (and that objects can disappear from your inventory just to return to the places where they were found), flashlight doesn't want to work after leaving houses) - quite useless food mechanic (there are plenty of…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a 2D top down horror themed survival/twin stick brawler hybrid game with a rich story and handmade artwork. Explore an alternative universe Finland and fight off creepy monsters, keep yourself alive long enough with the tools in your inventory and you may unravel the choices-matter interactive story. There's a few good points here, the atmosphere is good and the game launches under Windows 10, which puts the game above so many other indie titles. As far as handmade art goes, it's…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As an American and former lumberjack I could not help but play this game. Overall, I enjoyed it, but I would not recommend it for everyone. The story mode is pretty short with ten different areas that are well designed. I wish there were either more sub maps (that is, buildings or just unique locations or events) or more areas in the game. Maybe Bethesda has spoiled me here, but I think this game could use more. I was actually surprised by a few moments in the story and for that I would…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A nice 2d horror one.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Edit: The developer is looking back into his game after this long, this itself is impressive. This is not a bad game, I mean the environment is very nice. If some of the game-breaking bugs are fixed, this can be nice game. The concept and art are impressive, programming is bad.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am 32 years old. My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old. When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This little top-down shooter may have many bugs, but as it is an interesting indie game, I enjoyed it a lot. It isnt long, but looking for some interesting secrets can prolong the experience. Combat can be often confusing, as monster will sometimes automatically hit you and sometimes completely miss you. Inventory is a mess too. However, end-game enemies are quite interesting. And when you get some ammo for shotgun and other guns, game becomes more action oriented, which is good. So while I…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →+ Had lots of fun with this game, as half Finnish I really enjoyed the Finland sterotypes jokes! - Was a bit buggy at times especially with achievements, tried starting over to get them but did not work.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Kalaban is a 2d game similar to postal 1 in terms of the atmosphere and art. The only difference is that you fight against monsters and need to manage your needs.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →100% achievement review: Small survival horror game. Not too much story here, and only one boss, but still fun for the little time spent. There's only 4 enemy types in addition to the boss as well. As a short experience its good, just don't come looking for something to spend hours on. 2 of the achievements are actually somewhat broken, as you need an item that you cannot find in game. Luckily the game stores your inventory in the ini file which is easily modified to add the item, so the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really tried to enjoy this game, the story seemed interesting but there are just so many game-breaking bugs and it crashes every 5-10 minutes. Sometimes items get reset, objectives are unable to be completed, your character and monsters can get stuck/ glitch into objects. I had to exit and re-open the game FOUR times because I couldn't get gasoline despite the generator being turned on. At this stage it's definetly not worth the price. Before anybody says anything: My computer is very much up…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have no clear memory how I got this ^|^ Well, it´s finnish but so far I didn´t manage to get the heat on in the sauna ; ) No crashes yet (Win10, old but decent rig), might be a bit buggy but still fun. Thrill factor high, completing the achievements shouldn´t be too hard, I got about a third of them in my 1h+ playtime as of writing this review. Still I´d recommend buying on Sale .. Expect to be scared !
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is filled with game breaking bugs and the controls and hit-boxes are badly done. It might be good if the developers put more effort into it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Morlan's shorts: It looks and (almost) sounds good.. But the gameplay glitches will prevent you from having fun. And the main problem with the game is the collision with the environment. You keep getting stuck in places: next the car, by the fence, next to the door and most of the time next to the enemy! and this the gamebreaker for me. There are a lot of battles and if you glitch and get stuck, you'll probably die from the enemy and will have to play the whole chapter/level again which may…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Looks interesting, but it's barely functional. In the short time I played it, I encountered enemies becoming invisible when standing in a doorway, enemies getting stuck on eachother when spawning, killing enemies too fast leading to a hard crash, inventory items "sticking" to eachother, clicking one inventory item giving me the one next to it, depleted/used items not disappearing from the inventory... I can't even count the number of issues I encountered in under half an hour of trying it out.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Is an okay game. Received it for free so I cant complain. It did crash quite frequently, but was fun overall. Pretty short, no real explaination of the already vague story upon completion. 2.5/5. Would be 3 if not for the crashes, and 4 if the story actually had SOME substance.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish I can give this game a positive review. The game atmosphere is good, and the plot is a typical apocalyptic story. Mediocre designs for monsters, weapons. This a good small game to kill time, and to play at night. However, you should seriously take the issues below. 1. This game crashes randomly. My laptop is MSI GE62 6QF with windows 10 64 bit version. I believe the hardware is enough to run this game. 2. This game installs a file, named "stdrt.exe", under your local disk. It ate lots…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good, but flawed. The main problem is that it needed the controls to be tightened up. The character tends to slide against things even when there's room for them to walk normally, and the menu's can be hard to navigate because it won't register something, or it will think you clicked on something you didn't. My other complaint is that at the end of the dialogue I would click to exit and the character would shoot. The enemies also tend to be bullet sponges. I was still having fun until I…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game has a good deal of atmosphere and felt like it would be a decent play, however in the 20-or-so minutes I've played, my character hate 7 apples and some bread and was starving, enemies were respawning left and right and I couldn,t for the life of me figure out what to do. Movement is a bit slow to my liking, and the character seems to "stick" to anything he touches making it painfully slow to walk through corridors and enter houses and such. Made it back and to a spot where it told me…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have not played so far yet, but I really love what I have seen so far! The atmosphere is really great and almost feel like stepping into some twisted nightmare! Can't wait to play this more to see how it develops further in! Also love the fact that the game is set in Finland which is quite unusual as far as I know and it also adds to the uniqe feeling of the game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sadly could not get far into it without getting bored. I like the premise but no tutorial, no control settings, no idea what I am doing. Have a go though!

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good. Great even. Nice short little game. Wish I could get all the achievements. Oh well.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Six achievements and six crashes in 20 minutes.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got this from humble bundle. At first I thought it will be like a darkwood a solid psychological horror game but no that it aint. When i saw enemies with guns i just quit..
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A nice 2d horror one.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The graphics are nice, it has that cozy-mysterious-creepy feeling, if you can call it that. But the game is too open, you just walk around not sure what to do, while killing werewolves and watching the hunger bar constantly go down super fast. It's a shame because I like the visuals, but the gameplay doesn't keep me entertained.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →you know what i actually think it was fun 7/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →https://youtu.be/vbYo4J5Xi_c Inconsistent layering of areas makes monsters disappear between thresholds, while the gamified food system adds little besides annoyance to the formula.

The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world where the player takes control of a survivor who must fight their way through hordes of monsters to uncover the truth about what happened to the world. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A slow, poorly-written mess. Avoid.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not the worst game I've ever played just not really worth playing if you have other twin stick shooters. I'd give it a middle of the line if that was still possible.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Extremely buggy, extremely bad and top it all off almost 6 dollars??? Hell no, the achievements doesn't even work and it still has the audacity to ask me to purchase Area 51 Defence.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I actually wanted to give this one a chance though the controls and the mechanics are very rough. After dying at some point, I restarted the scene and now I am in an endless loop of dying because after restarting, my vitality is -4. Game is completely broken. https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/2419066874908649259/83B68B5FF2AF7F43B697AD42996046F2F7A01206/
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Playing this game I could sense the good intentions of the developers in creating a solid indie game. I felt it when I was trapped in the scary town with a classic survival horror atmosphere, and as the story progressed. However, a slew of problems complicated my experience with Kalaban, reaching the point of ruining the possibility to make this game recommendable: _Problems with the controls _Frustrating combat mechanichs _ A horrible autosave system _Bugs almost everywhere I hope on day…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's so close to being something I'd recommend but it's too awkward, janky, and buggy. First time playthrough: 2 hours 54 minutes 5/10
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you played Darkwood and thought "hmm what would that look like if it was really ♥♥♥♥♥♥," you have your answer now.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A poorly designed game with far too many ways to softlock yourself, Kalaban is ALL about the rich, horror aesthetic without every actually trying to commit to it. Enemies are spongey, and take a lot of damage (Sometimes they don't take damage at all, but that isn't intentional) and characters are weak, uninteresting and static. It is a poor copy of Darkwood, which should be obvious from the screenshots, but remains a terrible attempt to try and ride the back of an already well-made game. Got me…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It has too many control and movement glitches to be enjoyable. Right click use item in inventory and after it uses it it binds to the item under it. Walking across a map and I got caught on a barrel. You have a "food" and "vitality" meter. You can have food hit 0 and it doesn't do anything. Enemies will disappear and reappear in a matter of seconds closing off their hitbox. Enemies can just walk up to you and slash you while talking to someone. Drop a item while under an awning? Oh well. It's…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty ordinary game,a bit buggy but mostly just cheap.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →gameplay feels clunky, combat is uninspired and bland and the writing seems to constantly fight against the mood by trying to be quirky and funny in the midst of a dark and oppressing ambiance.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →K A L A B A N Buggy, tedious, pointless. Resorted to watching a playthrough. There's absolutely no story value to be gained while wading through dozens of uninspired combat areas and crap "mechanics".
