60 of 181 · most liked firstJagged Alliance - Back in Action Review after lots of playthroughs (>1000hrs base game and various mods) (compared with the original Jagged Alliance 2) -------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Graphics: (7/10) -------------------- For a game that released over 10 years ago they are outdated (of course) but nevertheless for an action-rpg still decent and enjoyable to play. 2. Story / Map & NPCs: (4/10) -------------------------------- Sadly less than the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →as much as i want to love that game, its bugfest. every time i try to play it, it takes like 30min to hit me with something like one enemy killing whole squad from behind bookshelf where he cant be even targeted. its joke that game is being sold, its not even beta level.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Here's my experience: Tutorial: Would have been helpful to grasp the new combat system if my merc didn't glitch out climbing down a ladder... looked like he was doing bear crawls on an invisible vertical wall and couldn't fix him. This REALLY bothered me, but I shrugged it off and drove on; who needs to learn the medical aspect anyways? Interface (layout with email, worldview, sectors, etc): It's easy to navigate and figure it out if you know the system. I imagine it'll be quite difficult,…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I finished the game, but would I recommend it to my past self? No. Cheating AI eg. Ai has good cover and not moving, Ai has not spotted your agents, you flank, as soon as you have line of sight, Ai will move into another cover before you can fire, they still have not spotted your agents. You cant shoot through a tarp or curtains with even a .50 BMG, while enemies can shoot through cars and walls. Camera constraints are barely useable A large portion of game time is spent on tedious looting.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Everyone who thinks JA3 is good should take another look at JA:BiA... I don't understand how BiA could go under like that... everyone is talking about JA2...apparently nobody knows BiA.... if it weren't for that, then the people would have rated JA3 harder.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game faithfully follows Jagged Alliance 2, and it works about the same. Combat is strightforward, The mercs voices are true to the old game, the 3D Map is well designed and it can be enjoyable, and challanging, but... The campaing is completely broken. You keep fending off dozeen of heavily armed enemy reiforcement but their bodies have nothing to loot, which means you can't properly equip your militas cheaply in the island. At every attack, which can happens everywhere inside your…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's possible for a bad video game to still be enjoyable. Jagged Alliance: Back in Action was objectively not a good game. Not *terrible* but not good by any means. It is my seventh most-played Steam game, at roughly around 335 hours.
unlabelledView post →Before you read on: do note this review will contain a few minor spoilers for both This game and Jagged Alliance 2. With that out of the way, enjoy the read. This game calls itself "Jagged Alliance" and is supposed to be a Remake of Jagged Alliance 2, but it sadly doesn't feel and play like a Jagged Alliance game. The main reason for this is that a whole bunch of the core fundamentals of the original Jagged Alliance 2 didn't make it into this game. Mainly: - Turn Based Combat got replaced…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Worst tactical game imaginable. The enemies are just some freaking super soldiers, when your mercs are worthless piece of thrash. Even though they meant to be professional mercenaries and so on. It is ridiculous how one standart enemie soldier with the weakest revolver can outgun your professional merc with an assault rifle. Whoever thought this will be fun is plainly an idiot
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's fun for a short while...but the game is not balanced at all. On far too many occasions, my mercs couldn't hit anything, while the enemy seemed to just chip away with shot after shot. These were basic enemies, nothing special about them. There's also no real break between capturing and having to recapture bases. While you're traveling to one area, the enemy would repeatedly recapture areas I took over. I remember this from the JA2, but it seems like it happens too quickly and too often.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are some pros, some cons, I want to mention now: Pros: The atmosphere of the game is nice. The gfx and the enviroment is done in a lovely way and makes it pretty and nice. The music and sounds are good. It could have a bit more variety but it is OK. There are plenty of weapons and equipments you can chose. Customization of each merc is huge. The storyline and the content ist pretty much. Playing it to the endgame takes at least 15-20h. And even than there is quite a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game sat for years, did not play it. Started again, and it is great. Tough, but allows you to be creative. LOV JA
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fans of the original series like to ♥♥♥♥ on this game because it's different. The opposite is true for me: I despise turn-based strategy and love real-time with pause instead. Long story short, after a few days of initial frustration (the game mechanics really take some getting used to) I enjoyed the hell out of this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Came for the nostalgia but it definitely did not age well. The game is massively buggy, the ui and controls are all in all pretty bad, terrible voice acting isn't funny so much as annoying anymore, etc. Tldr; if you've got good memories of this game don't ruin them by trying it again.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the first games I got on Steam. Was completely unaware of any previous titles in the JA franchise. I guess I enjoyed it a lot when looking at hours play. I remember being very invested in the success of my planning and being very meticulous with inventory and everything. A game for careful and strategic gamers

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is really good, I prefer it to Jagged Alliance 3 mainly because of how much you micromanage each mercenary's kit and skills but also how the scope of the entire campaign feels like an actual military challenge. All this game would need to be perfect would be an option to have turned based combat but the pausable RTS mechanics are somewhat similar to Fallout Tactics and not without benefits. You can still micromanage the actions of each mercenary like a turned based tactical game and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →lol... I forgot to not recommend this...
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played this game for 142 hours. Clearly it was terrible because as you know, everyone plays games for hundreds of hours only to say it sucked because someone hit the alt+F4 keys by accident in the middle of a mission. I would highly not recommend this game. You need to turn back. Especially when you can buy this game for $5 off of cdkeys. RUN!!! Save your money and spend it on the garbage remake JA 3 for $50! In all seriousness, i don't write serious reviews.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i wish they stick jagged alliance 3 to the old game mode , which is not turned base . i like this one more
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is AWESOME and with the right mods (Realism rebalanced or Combat Evolved) it's a total gem that's sucked up a hundred plus hours of my time. I just cant get enough of the micro-managing and there's literally a million possibilities of who you want in your squads and how to outfit them. I've only ever played to about half the game or less and then left it for a year or two and then come back and started over (on my third or fourth start now lol) but every time I restart it's like a new…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So, the game starts out nice. It feels a bit like a JA2 *lite*. Which would be completely OK. But it quite soon turns into a frustrating mess. In which u are stacked against such unfair odds, that tghe whole process of winniong becomes very gamey. This is true for tactics on the map. Some points are extremely well defended. So u eare forced to either savescum, or exploit the AI. Regarding strategy: the enemy attakcs get so numerous, that it was not enought to train militia (which is a problem…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolutely love the game. I think there is a lot of unfair criticisms of the game in the reviews. A lot of people say its not as good as the other JAs and stuff, I think its better with a pause and go system rather than turn based. I am aware this is a essentially a 3d remake of JA2 but I would rather play this and Crossfire over the originals or JA3...thats just me though. Start with some bad stuff; the voice acting is very caricature-esque and over the top, can be annoying but I'd imagine…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In core, this game is not bad. But as a huge JA2 fan, I have two major issues: 1: no IMP and no option to create own character 2: major issue - extremely dumb and annoying "militia training" system. My frustration growned with every more sectors what I get under my control and needed defend. My personal experience and opinion - unfortunately, thanks to point 2, I gived up and didn't complete this game. But probably, some day in future, I try give it another chance.. Generally, I think -…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I especially liked the pausible real-time play. Although i enjoyed turn-based JA2 and i will certainly play JA3 i got hooked to this system. Wondering why there has not been any follow-up except crossfire. I recommend this remake of the Arulco "tale"..
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My Old Favorite Game, play it again while waiting for Jagged Alliance 3. Ivan Dolvich and Hitman Hennesy are my favorite mercs, since Jagged Alliance 1. I hope there is Workshop Modes/Quest in this Steam base game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a long-time Jagged Alliance fan, I was sceptical of this title at first, but having played it a few times my distaste for the choices made in this adaptation of the franchise turned slowly to appreciation for what is really a very different game with the JA franchise lore overlaid on it. I play both this and the older titles and each scratches a different itch. This one is simple squad-based tactical game with some rpg elements (player-driven character advancement and quests) and it lacks…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Watered down remake of JA:2 missing a lot of the things that made it a strategy game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a huge fan of Jagged Alliance I must admit that I didn't think this was a great iteration of the series. It's not bad, and has some of the same vibes the originals have.. It just didn't really pull me in like the originals. Not bad, just not something I love.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you loved the first two Jagged Alliances (or any of their altered remakes), then I think you will love Back in Action and Crossfire. While the arming of your Merc's has been simplified and become a little more restrictive, like adding a scope and silencer, it hasn't taken too much away from the game. Having the ability to pause and plan your moves, then setting it in motion and watching the carnage unfold is a great.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game was fun till I finished it to 80% and couldnt continue because on paticular point of game the game drops out to desktop and thats it. There is no way to continue. I have tried on different computers and no luck. No patch/no fix/ no support. I also heared that JA3 has same issue with freezing. So if you are looking game what you can actually finish then this is not for you.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →XCOM 1 & 2 (rebooted ones) made me love tactical games but one thing I've experienced with real time tactics game is it's very easy to cheese things and you find yourself playing with 1 or 2 characters rather than your whole team.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Buggy mess. Buy at your own risk. Enemies do not miss and do massive damage while you miss constantly and do very little damage. This pigeon holes you into a repetitive and boring cat and mouse engagements mostly leaning on grenades and mines.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →best strategy/turn based battle simulator...even after 20+ years. still playing it today every once in a while.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Did they even play test this crap? ¨My gun jammed¨ will hunt my dreams because of the mercenaries are too incapable to apply oil into their guns and the guns start jamming after shooting 2 magazines from them and after that you can't shoot before ¨my gun jammed¨ is constantly on repeat, even the Zip 22 is more reliable in real life then the SCAR in game! Imagine the soldiers going to war in real life with any of these guns in the game and requires a genius to apply oil into them. Mechanics are…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Horrible gameplay - DO NOT BUY! Back in Action could pass as a lifeless 3D remake of the classic JA2 - if not for the horrible shooting mechanics and enemy AI.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Jagged Alliance: Back in Action gives another chance to experience routine of liberating tiny dictatorship country with some batch of hired guns. Quite enjoyable one! Lots of places to see and to fight for. Lots of guns to fire. Lots of faces to hire. Lots of targets to hit. It might not be the deepest game in the series in terms of gameplay and characters, but it's still delivers entertainment. With the game's set of basic tactical possibilities the player is challenged with a variety of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Missed this one because I wasn't much into action rpgs when it was out, but this is a good classic and I got the entire franchise along with all the DLCs for a few dollars, good deal !!! Graphics are bit out-dated, GUI and menu old and clunky, but not a bad game overall for the price. Seems to be a good, classic modern-day action cRPG.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →7/10 - Flawed but fun + Unique JA approach to combat TBT with real time action punctuated with pause as needed + Great environment building on previous entries + Some variety to settings forcing you to adapt your tactics + Nice mixture of stealth, assault, sniper and grenades to knock through opposition + Engine serviceable with clean UI and reduced complexity + Stats add another wrinkle to exploration & combat + Mods enhance the AI to something to behold - Accessibility - Shortcuts/inputs…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Jagged Alliance: Back in Action” is a remake of the game “Jagged Alliance 2.” Unlike its predecessor, this game transitions from turn-based strategy to quasi-real-time gameplay, which might be inconvenient for some players. Despite requiring a deep dive into micromanagement and surprising players with certain design decisions on the battlefield, the game can still be interesting. Long-time PC users may find aspects to love, provided they can overlook its frequent inconveniences. However,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pausable real time tactics is my poison.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While the game looks good at first glance, this is deceptive. After a couple of hours, disgusting UX begins to appear. Management and microcontrol is inconvenient. The difficulty balance is not adequately adjusted, and artificial intelligence behaves extremely strange. In general, the game is significantly worse than any analogues or original parts.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loved it since the day it came out, I'm back at it as of 01/01/2023. This, the expansions, and Crossfire will be done now.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game just like the original. I would highly recommend it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Personally I would recommend this game to hardcore strategy gamers. This game is so unique in ever sense of the way. You can change your character's pose and even sneak up on enemy targets. It is a traditional game and it brings back memories of Fallout Tactics and Shadow Company.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its still amazing to play
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →1.This game is terrible as a sequel to Jagged Alliance 2, the turn-based tactics role playing game. 2.This game can be fun if you forget about the first point. 3.I am not a series veteran. I am a tactics-based strategy game lover however. Combat -This game is in real time, but that is misleading. When your mercenary and an enemy sees each other, the game initiates a count down timer for each. Combat looks like this: you fire, hit/miss; they fire, hit/miss. If the enemy has higher stats, he…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Get this when it's on sale. I got it 75% off on Winter Sale and for $5, yes this game is worth it. Basically, this is the game; The Expendables meets R6 siege: real-time tactics edition, but tragically watered down edition. This is sadly the closest you're going to get to a strategy game that allows that specific C4-style dynamic entry (as far as I know) which is a shame because that's a specific niche I'd love to see more of IN THE STRATEGY GENRE. (Also, before you ask, NO! It's NOT the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Having to control every action and not being able to let your forces act on their own in self defence or in over watch is fatiguing so after about half an hour you have had enough and you uninstall and come back six months latter to play for another half hour.
