When you had no job, no responsibilities and you were to pretending to do schoolwork while playing computergames. Your friends are in this game. Ivan still talks Russian to you like you understand (and yes you picked up a few words from him over time). Fidel still wants to blow up stuff with you and Wolf is still there to help. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A true classic if there ever was one. Despite the fact that Jagged Alliance was released in 1994, it feels just as fresh today, the game has aged extremely well. The gold edition (the same game plus an expansion that allows tailor made campaigns and an editing tool) was released in '95, just a year after the initial release. This and UFO: Enemy Unknown (aka the beginning of the XCom series) are truly the 'granddaddy's' of tactical turn based strategy. This is were it all began. Personally…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Even though 25 years old it's still awesome. So many mercenaries to choose from for your team, each having not just different statistics but also their own personality. You usually want to have at least one medic, one mechanic, one explosives expert and then of course a lot of course a lot of marksmanship. Also your mercs shouldn't be too dumb, too clumsy and too unhealthy. Several weapons and armor types, which can be upgraded, many other tools like camouflage sets, different goggles, metal…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you can get past the crunchy retro graphics and the clunky UI this is a pretty solid example of old school strategy RPG. Lots of things to customize and upgrade. An interesting campaign mode with a decent back story to it. If you enjoy classic strategy games like X-Com you might also like this one!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Can't go wrong with this classic tactical rpg strategy game with realistic elements from that time period, such as the ai following sounds to each mercenary having not only having different statistics, but different attitudes and reactions to certain mercenaries and actions. Not all mercenaries can be hired at the start, but as the game goes on, more will be willing to work for you, for the right price. Those who played XCOM should give this a try, even though this is a dosbox port of the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I remember playing this game, not knowing what I was doing, just scared about the strange German man shouting. Ah yes here it is, the great game in its infancy. Every thing you love about Jagged Alliance 2 is right here, in the original cute little blocky game. It’s like they had JA2 in mind all along, but this was the graphics technology they had to work with at the time. I gave myself hemorrhoids replaying this game in 2023. And darn it, I would do it again! A great game, which was one of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Jagged Alliance is a tactical role-playing game released in 1994 for MS-DOS. It was developed by Madlab Software and published by Sir-Tech. It is the first game in the Jagged Alliance series. It was re-released in 2008 on GOG.com and in 2010 on GamersGate, both with Windows support. A version for Nintendo DS was released in 2009
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a legend, an unforgettable pinnacle of turn-based tactics. Highlights include: - Dozens of memorable mercs who have personalities and quite a lot to say. - Sound strategy, your decisions matter and the AI is surprisingly formidable. - The game world feels very rich. Each game sector is hand created to give it a different feel, and there are small surprises and side events to keep the game engaging for very long time. That said, some parts of the game did not age well: - Graphics…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm having a hard time getting into this and I think most people who got into video games from 2000 onwards would probably feel similarly. I like the ideas that I'm seeing with building a team and carrying out missions, but the UI/UX is super dated. It's very cheap so if you think it might be interesting it's worth checking out if it's on sale, but I would not expect to get far if you were not a dos gamer.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoyed the game for the first few hours, noting that the gameplay was a bit slow, but otherwise manageable. That changed, however, when I started expanding outward on the map. The pace of the game became even slower. Moving units around is like pulling teeth. Each has to be moved individually on the map, but you don't even know where you're going yet on a new map. Every time you go to a new area, you know that there are enemies there.. but you don't know where they're located. So you have…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →great throwback to early gaming days, overall a decent emulation of a great title. cannot recommend due to extremly confusing/non-functioning saves. in my case, quick saves were non functioning in-game, and perodic saves doesn't work at all (at a restart of the game the menu for loading is empty/non-functional) deeply confusing, I have started played through the first day four times now :|, honestly, not gonna start again, although would very much like to.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love JA2 but this game has NOT aged well. EDIT: Let me expand on this, Jagged Alliance 1 was created in a time where you had to beg your mother to get a new game every month if that and if you got a game you didn't like, too bad you little runt! Studying the manual for each game was pretty much a necessity back then, tutorials were completely unheard of, and as the Angry Video Game Nerd repeatedly points out, intuitive game design was still very much a new concept. Many of the people who…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My favorite reviews are the ones viewing this game from a 2020 lens. Obviously if you're playing a 26 year old game, you're going to encounter clunky controls, bad resolutions, lack of customizing options, but none of that should make you write off this absolutely excellent turn-based tactical game. The characters each have their own personalities, they interact with each other, some will be faithful, some will murder each other in the night, some are not worth your money, some are worth…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is one of the best, what I've ever had in my life. First time I played with it was in 1994 on friend of mine 386 with 4MB of RAM. I've already played all 60 maps at least 8 times, and still love the game. Unfortunately other JA games are not so good than this one where you need to manage the money, the mercs, and also need to find hidden stash by reading letters, building stronger weapons with silencer, scope, and metal rods, also opening doors with locksmith kits, healing soldiers,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I used to play this game in my friend's computer more than 20 years ago and that time it was a revolutionary game. Even now it is entertaining, and humorous. From time to time I install this game and play and have some fun time.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Jagged Alliance is a retro turn-based tactical game where you have to hire mercenaries and reclaim an island sector by sector. By today's standards, this game is absolute trash in my honest opinion. The visuals are so ugly, and the controls are wacky and infuriating. I had a very hard time getting into this game and I believe that, unless you want 1994 nostalgia, this game is not to be played at all. 1/10.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have just replayed Jagged Alliance all the way to the end. Wow !!! It brings back good memories. In 1994 I got my first computer and this game was one of the first half a dozen or so that I played. It was so much fun. A very well made game, very few bugs and the few that existed were corrected by a 3.5 inch floppy that came out and you could get for free from Sir Tech. The last time I played this game was around 2004 and so 18 years later and playing it again was very fun. This game,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've replayed this game multiple times in 20+ years times. Yet I still get some surprises in things I never discovered before. The devs really put so much depth in this game, which was done almost 30 years ago, it was amazing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sure, "take a trip into retro land", but don't forget to read the 50 page travel guide (manual) beforehand.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Any pc gamer who is a fan of turn based combat and memorable characters should check this out.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really impressive mechanics and AI. My playtime on Jagged Alliance was entirely on the first day, repeatedly killing friendlies and wondering why I was not progressing. After banging my head for a while, I decided to look up some playthroughs to learn how to play, since the game does not have a tutorial or any kind of help/information. This was the guy i found: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXt0heSNZlE&list=PLvqxe4XbcSiGwHuRfp9Nd4IH4VaBiNjxI I realized immediately this was not the game…

Even less that it will be total blast.. It is true that Jagged alliance has excellent sequel (and 3 is not bad either after all..) but I was still amazed how well the original was really done, sure it is old, sure it has some technical flaws, sure it require read the manual (btw it is in game files, I can also highly suggested this…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the whole window is open in really tiny resolution (about 400x200 only), it's really painful to watch it, the game is really buggy that talking in double speed, the "game play" it you click around a map and see information, maybe a snack tiny game is batter than this crap thing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Jagged Alliance is one of the early turn-based strategy games where you hire and control a squad of mercenaries helping reclaim an island paradise from the bad guys. In addition to the gameplay, the Jagged Alliance franchise is known for its tongue-in-cheek 1980's vibes, mimicking the action movies of the era. Personally I played Jagged Alliance 2 around the time of its release (1999) and absolutely loved it. That said, due to its dated interface and mechanics, I cannot recommend the original…

This game is a strategy game in which you try to capture an island with a group of mercenaries. Jagged Alliance 1: Gold Edition includes both the original Jagged Alliance and the add-on Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Oldie but goodie, i still have the original cd somewhere.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Turn-based strategy games have become a lost art. Jagged Alliance gave you great turn-based combat with RPG elements and a cast of memorable mercenaries that will join you in your challenge.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It may be a classic of the turn-based tactics genre, but it is simply too old-fashioned and clunky for 2020. I got this with the Jagged Alliance Complete Collection which contains all the main Jagged Alliance games except the latest one (JA Rage!). I decided to give the very first one a try but quickly found out that even though it has some very interesting and fun gameplay mechanics and some technical aspects are quite impressive for 1994, the game became mostly unplayable and unenjoyable…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing list. I personally would add couple games, that defined my "gaming hobby": - XCOM/UFO: Enemy Unknown - not sure how this fits in the list, but it was ground breaking for me: perfect blend of micro- and macro management, strategical decisions, tactical battles, what a great game and so much memories of it (and I'd put honorable mention of Jagged Alliance 1&2 here, 'cause they are very similar concept) - Civilization - genius idea, one of the 4X pioneers, easy to pick up, hard to master,…
unlabelledView post →Tried my best to get into it, but its way to slow. The fun is only for the ones who are nostalgic about the game. I can see the Greatness of the game in 1995 but in 2025 it aged like old milk..once it hits a spot you cant enjoy it anymore.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Undying classic. Never again has a game made so many good design choices. It keeps challenging me even after playing it for over 20 years. I keep finding new stuff and stumble upon new mechanics with every playthrough. Marvellous. Brilliant. 10/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Jagged Alliance Gold (1994) While this game just a bit too oldshool for me personally, this is an enjoyable game once you get used to it. Its a strategic game where you control mercenary squads and you take the fight to the countries evil dictators. The gameplay involves a mix of turned based combat (my favourite part of the game), exploring, expanding of your base, exploit resources and there are some choices for role-playing. The game reminds me a bit of the Tropico games in a way. Same kind…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game was released before i was born so i played it purely out of curiosity, the gameplay is pretty good but you need to look for the manual or tutorial on the internet, the graphics are so old but that's okay, but the UI is a bit unfriendly, i don't think i will continue playing. and I guess people buy this for collection or nostalgia. I got it for free so why not

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A good old game that suffers from just being "OLD" af and a dysfunctional line of sight that will get your guys killed every time. I pondered reinstalling the game but...NAH!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a very old game. I've never played it, so I had to rely entirely on guides and YouTube walkthroughs. Overall, the mechanics are pretty good for the time. These days, new indie games sometimes have worse graphics.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Jagged Alliance is the original turn based mercenary game that that started it all, first released way back in 1995. This game is fun, difficult, but being nearly 30 years old and essentially the original game (and its sequel deadly games) running in a dos box emulator has some serious quality of life issues that you can’t patch around. While I think Jagged Alliance 2 the best one in the series (seriously if you haven’t played that, you should), you could do much worse than playing JA if you’re…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Perchance, amidst the vast landscape of tactical strategy games, one may stumble upon a gem that stands the test of time and captivates the very essence of strategic brilliance. Such a gem, I daresay, is none other than Jagged Alliance 1 Gold Edition. From the moment I embarked on my journey into the tumultuous world of Arulco, I was ensnared by its immersive gameplay and intricate web of choices. The tactical depth of Jagged Alliance 1 Gold Edition is nothing short of mesmerizing, as it…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A more in-depth video review of this game can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWRtLk2fWbI Note: I played this game on a different platform. I got it on Steam for free because why the hell not. This is one the turn-based-tactics classics alongside the original X-COM series, and it's still has some value to play through today. Sure, some of the design choices, particularly those concerning UI and controls, are on the archaic side. But what 28 year old game couldn't have the same…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A classic example of a great game that aged poorly. Second only to XCOM in turn-based tactics in 1994, Jagged Alliance's vague interface, cheap difficulty and generally archaic nature make it a far clunkier experience today. Despite its faults, the cast of lovable characters and its blend of tactical, role-playing, and strategic elements still make for a charming and addictive package today, albeit one that requires pain tolerance and reading the manual to enjoy. Jagged Alliance 2 is a better…
