Following the success of the RPG-Parody Grotesque Tactics franchise, comes a spin-off nestled in the heart of a tropical zombie bevvy of beauties against the greatest hero of them all, conveniently titled: Holy Avatar vs. Maidens of the Dead As the story goes... ... From the Steam store page

60 of 96 · most liked firstAs a spin-off Holy Avatar vs... stays true to the formula presented by Grotesque Tactics: That is, it is a light-hearted and funny Strategy RPG. As with GT this one refers to many popular games and laughs are around every corner. The major difference from the main series however, is the fact that the player this time controls "his semidevine humble self Holy Avatar" directly on his quest to rid his holiday island from a zombie maiden infested plague. Gameplay wise, this game keeps it simple.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm a bit on the fence about recommending this in general... but as far as continuing the series goes, this game is fit for fans of the first 2 games. It is exactly what you would expect in the GT series (humor and all things considered). The only difference is that the game is much shorter than the other 2 and way more linear. Here are a few observations: - The environment is a lot more vibrant thanks to the cell shading and the tropical theme. It's a shame that the game was so short. - Not…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"Sunglasses and babes on a tropical island" Holy Avatar? - Holy s*** this man is sexistic and political incorrect. The dark humor of this game is strange, but also unique. Imagine him coming back with three of his favourite girlfriends to Holy Island to relax, which is a tropical island full of virgin slaves, goblins and elfes. First decision: Put on your red hot swimsuits and help me fighting the deadly hugging lovebears. So far so good. Who's this guy with long blonde hair growing til his…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If Duke Nukem got his own RPG set in a fantasy world in the mid 00's, this would be it. More stereotyping of demographics than Tumblr, less pop culture references than Magicka, and sexual innuendo on-par with a Louis C.K. skit. Still had fun, for what it's worth. Cheap voice actors probably would have helped immensely. Only bother if you desperately want a shallow, simple RPG to kill a few hours (and even then I'm sure there are many other, better options out there.)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Holy Avatar vs. Maidens of the Dead is developed by Headup Games and Silent Dreams while being published by Headup Games. It’s less of a sequel and more of a spin-off that provides the entire trilogy a closing note as crazy as the series’ initial premise. Gameplay Unlike Grotesque Tactics 1&2, you no longer take control of Drake, the goth wannabe knight. Shifting the focus from him and onto the trilogy’s true protagonist: His semi divine humble Self, The Holy Avatar. This paladin of nearly…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a spoilerfree review of a complete playthrough of the german version of the game, played with keyboard and mouse. Man I would love reccomending this game. I loved the first two grotesque tactics games. As soon as I saw this I immediatly bought it. The main problem with the game is, that there is less everything. Basically this game is, what the first ( maybe the first two) chapter in one of the first two games is. Only that the first two games had a bunch of chapters coming after…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was actually pretty surprised at this game. I thought I would be immediately put off around five minutes into playtime, but I found myself quite surprised by it. While this certainly isn't the best game out there, it's got it's own unique charm - that I believe - should be given a chance. I found the characters to be refreshing. They aren't super complex or deep, the opposite really, but I think it plays to it's strength. The main character is self-centered, misogynistic, and completely…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I tried to give it a chance but this mediocre game is just too boring.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Despite some awkard controls and low frame rates (despite the fact that my system is pretty darned fast), this is a fun RPG. The tile-based, turn-based combat is satisfying. The characters are charming and fun, despite and because of their silly dialog. Not a bad way to spend a few dollars.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is kind of like an epilogue to Grotesque Tactics 2, as it is only about a 3-4 hour game and uses the same graphics, combat, and UI for the most part (they gave it more of an island/vine look) as that game along with a few of the same NPCs though there are some new ones too and there are a few new enemies. It is still fun but because it is shorter I would keep that in mind when considering a purchase. Unlike Grotesque Tactics 1-2 where you had a party of 6-10 characters, in this game you…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Im so very disappointed with this game. I briefly skimmed over the reviews "“His semidevine humble self is in it!” -2 thumbs up – Holy Avatar" Little did I notice it was the in game characters giving their own "review" view on this terrible game. The mouse feels unresponsive, the combat is incredibly slow, the turn based combat makes the combat painfully slower! The game may be witty but as far as I have played it has been more of a half wit humour. Needless to say Im very disappointed,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game was MUCH better than expected... short (5-6 hours) but still worth every penny! fun-humorous-arrogant-rpg goodness :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game could be quite fun but is impossible to play due to the number of quest breaking glitches. First level I was unable to move to the second level after defeating the final mob. I restarted a fresh game & on the second try it worked only for the second level to glitch where the vines you must cut vanished & I was unable to move on. Restarted the game again & passed only to encounter another game breaking glitch. Cannot recommend.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What a massive pile of ♥♥♥♥. Very annoying music, sexist, crappy unresponsive controls, poor virtually none existant tutorial. AVOID at all costs. Worst game I have ever purchased on steam. Unistalled never to played again. Complete waste of time and money.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I still have yet to play the previous Grotesque Tactics games, although this title is apparently considered a spin-off. That being said, anyone who has played the previous games will recognize the Holy Avatar straight away - he is front and center as the main attraction this time around. As the mightiest of heroes, you embark upon a much deserved vacation to a remote island with a small entourage of personal maidens. Things quickly escalate from there, however, and you soon find yourself…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unsurprisingly this game is as inherenly misogynistic as you might think. But it's pretty upfront about that so it isn't even the game's worst sin - the worst sin at the the controls are clunky, and the player interaction with the system is incredibly shallow. Even if the blatant objectifaction is not a problem for you, the terrible game play will be. Avoid.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I just recommend to people who likes RPGs with turns and want to try something different such as this parody about RPGs games. Is really short, some clunky controls, but is funny. Get it in a great discount sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cannot even describe. Worth the acid trip 10/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →WHAT THE ♥♥♥♥ WAS THAT..
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The artwork and area design are much better than Dungeons and Donuts. The path finding is WAY better as well. A bug with the "Bob the builder" quest made me start over since I didn't have a save from before I took it. Still I enjoyed the game and would recommend it for anyone who liked the previous ones, and anyone who wants a fairly simple turn-based combat game to waste some time on.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fantastic value at the on sale price, even helped me improve my German "Jungfrau" ;0) I advise you to switch on the German audio, or otherwise the text will scroll too fast, you will pick up the langauge eventually too!!!! Only complaint is I would have liked it to last longer, but cannot fault it for the price I paid. Very well put together spoof, congratulations to the development team, good luck with the English release. Can we look forward to more titles in the future? Something with a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Before starting play, go to Documents > Holy Avatar vs Maidens of the Dead > Settings and open the Config file in Notepad. Seach for "CamCanRotate" and change the value from false to true. Now you can rotate the camera ingame and ogle the sexy female characters from all angles and trust me, it's worth it. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) This is a tactical turn-based RPG and the final installment in the Grotesque Tactics trilogy. Most of the problems in the second game has been fixed and graphics have been…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →7-9 hours of gameplay fun rpg And full of jokes/tropes, should play the first two games but not needed
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →mmmh...I'm a big fan of GT1 and GT2, but this next episode wasn't the same thing. First, the lack of english voices, but it was ok, I can understand german so was not so bad. Turn based combat was also decent, even if too easy even at hard difficulty. I've found the dialogues were too short, characters personality not developped and the game damn too short. Completed in 6 hours with all achievements. The humor was ok, but I laughed a lot more with GT1 and GT2. Overall I can't say I was…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't even know anymore......THAT'S WHY IT'S AWESOME! Note: don't know why it said i don't like this game but oh well I fixed that.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The best thing about this game is that it is short - you can finish it in 4-7 hours, everything else is bad or in best case mediocre. Graphics are ok for the isometric RPG from 2014. The 3D models are decent, but there is something wrong with the contrast, the shadows are too strong and black so you can't see the details. Also, it is very hard to see the loot, there are green particles signaling where the loot is, but since everything else on the map is green it is very hard to see it... such…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →a little short but really so hillariously funny, a very entertaining comedy snack
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So glad I did not pay full price! It's dumb and cheezy, but I was expecting that. I was not expecting the mouse to be so messed up thay playing was painfull.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's like if you took everything bad from diablo and duke nukem, and whatever tactical rpg of your choice and were like...hell yeah. My head actually hurts from playing this one.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a lot like the first two games, quite a fun adventure! Turn based RPG goodness mixed with plenty of humor.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was a surprisingly tricky review not for the thumbs up/down thing, but to avoid giving the feeling that its a "Bad" game rather than simply something I'd probably not recommend in today's world. Holy Avatar vs. Maidens of the Dead is a spinoff tale of Grotesque Tactics. The important thing to know about this series is that its a fairly hardcore game that came at a time where "Indy" meant Diner Dash and Peggle. It wasn't the only game to step outside the norm nor the best, but at the time…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not nearly as fun as the 2 games that came before. And insanely short. Took meonly 3 hours to beat. And the 3 charecters only have 2 skills, and a main attack each. So you basicly do the same thing over and over for 3 hours. Don't buy this game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a bad game. But if you liked the other Grotesque Tactics games, you already knew that. It follows suit quite well. It is a silly, poor taste humor, tactics game that takes nothing seriously. If you want to kill a few hours and get some laughs, go for it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game tries to ridicule the rpg genre but is in itself bland and uninspiring and the best joke is delivered by the in-game critic about the game. Glad I got it for free but still with the time spent on it I might have been playing something better.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Terrible top-down game with a badly-written, parody male protagonist. Combat is bad, characters are bad, graphics are bad and it's even got a terrible font choice. Do not play.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I had misgivings about this entry to the Grotesque Tactics series because of my dislike of the main character. These were relieved by in-game dialogue, though I do have to agree with Holy Avatar and the entire party on one character. Holy Avatar vs. Maidens of the Dead (or Grotesque Tactics 2.5, in my opinion) is great if you like games that break the fourth wall, and enjoy seeing references to popular culture. While it is much shorter than Evil Heroes or Dungeons & Donuts, it ties up a few…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very strange turn-based combat game where you play as a "Warrior" accompanied by a group of bimbo women in search of recruiting other bimbo women. The combat is pretty brutal, can only walk a few steps and no explanation at all. Story and dialogue are pretty rough, not my kind of game. 3/10
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loved the first 2 games of the series (Grotesque Tactics). Sadly Drake is not in this one, so no contrast as Holy is the only "main character" in here. But most of all it isn't working very well. No map other than the minimap, so i constantly forgot in which direction i had to run (through 2 other zones) to get to the zone i needed to be for some quest. No indication if you have completed a quest objective and should run back to the quest giver, if you remember who that was. And i couldn't…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First impression after about an hour: Good, unique, fun. I'll update as I go, but so far I'm wondering why I waited so long to play it (bought it on sale, lingered). I'd call it lighthearded PG-13 parody. I've chuckled a couple times already and already seen jokes referencing Ultima and Zelda and the RPG male fantasy. It's already worth the pittance I paid for it. The combat is turn-based, it's not XCOM complicity, more traditional rpg style (with jokes, level-up after one monster?). The…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is a one joke game that fortunately doesn't take long to finish so the joke doesn't get too tired. Beginning to end is 3 hours tops, my 5 hour play is from ignoring it to cook and eat dinner. Not much to recommend it, it is not terrible, but lacks any uniqueness or charm that make it worth considering at anything above an 80% off sale. A $2 afternoons distraction if you are a games completionist. Otherwise look elsewhere.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game itself is not bad, and similar to the previous 2, however, and thats the reason why I cant recommend this game, it is very short (3-4h), also in comparison to its predecessors... you barely reach lv9, therefore the RPG elememts of level up do not work well, there are no recipies, and only a few quests, and only 3 companions in total. The humor and the (german only) speech is well done, so for a large discount the game is ok, but I really hope that the next part will be a full play…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's bad... real bad. The main menu barely functions; I can only save if I click the middle slots, no others. The humor is fairly weak- it get's pretty old to read "his humble semi-devine self" for the 50th time, especially when the text pops up off screen... Speaking of which, the camera is unbelievably bad as well so you're constantly scrolling around to see anything. The fights are easy and monotonous.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is buggy. I got as far as the fight in the main village when the zombies attack, and saved mid fight. When I tried to reload the save the explosive barrels that had already exploded returned and explode immediately. Unfortunately Avatar and others get caught in the explosion, which means instant game over. Can't load auto saves, and the regular save is basically broken. I chose to uninstall the game rather than start over completely.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you enjoyed the first two Grotesque Tactics games, you might enjoy this. But this feels like a cash grab. It's much shorter than the other two games at around 5-6 hours and feels rushed.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I liked the humor and the girls, but it doesn't have the greatest game-play in steam. I wish there was more games like this on Steam (or even better, like this with a better gameplay). But developers shy away from sexual themes. I never understood why extreme violence is ok, but if a boob appears it is frowned upon.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Holy Avatar vs Maidens of the Dead is the hilarious spin off to "grotesque tactics" Most partymembers of the grotesque titles have an appearance in this spin off. (sadly drake is not there) This time you play the mighty halfgod HolyAvatar himself, this alone is worth the 10$/€ pricetag. As it is a spin off: it has about 4-6 hours playtime (original ones had ~10h-14h) The story is hilarious as the other parts and has the same quality overall filled with jokes (most fun as always: the german…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →its really funny, but the combat system...is really really bad !!! you can get it for the jokes, i wouldn't. because of the combat system i can't continue playing it, because it doesn't make fun for me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolutely awful. I didn't expect much, given my prior experiences with Grotesque Tactics, but geez, how do these games make it past the QA department? Oh, right. There isn't one. Besides the rampant 80's style misogyny, which hey, I can overlook, the text crawls off the top whiz by without prompting as if the devs themselves can't be bothered to read it. Then you are thrust into a semi cel-shaded, kinda 3D isometric world that looks like a garage sale threw up on screen. I wouldn't mind that…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very slow, terrible turn based combat. The path finding sucks. Will check back when I have lower standards. +Boobs not much else.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Was fun, until bugged berserking and unability to load autosaves ruin the whole game for me. Not gonna bother playing it whole again, its not that good anyway. PS: German voice is better than nothing
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a decent game, but I'm giving negative mark for what developers did here. This part is a step back from the previous part, feels like a cash grab then a game with heart. Don't give me wrong, the climate, jokes, everything is here, as well as better game system from the 2nd part, but this one is way shorter, there is almost no voice acting, and there are almost no alternatives to quest like in previous parts, the team is smaller as well. If you played earlier Grotesque games and had fun…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →ok so this is a spin off of the tactics game where its holy avatar and a few maidens. so if you played the others you know that the humor is subjective and some of it is really cheesy. sure holy avatar can be annoying at times. the music does repeat itself so that can also tend to be annoying. its a very short game. as a few said you can look at it as a dlc and some pointed the music is similar to monkey island. so that annoying camera bug is still there but its not as bad as the first one. so…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A silly, fun turn based rpg. I don't remember buying it but I have enjoyed playing it. Now I'll get back to being my sexy self.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is almost like a side quest to Grotesque Tactics 2 than a game. It's too short (about 4 hours,) too easy (free heal after every battle.) But still, it's hard to complain when it showed up in my library for free. 5/10 Actually, this marks my 200th 100%, so yay.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game I feel is aimed at 14 year old boys and adults with a very immature sense of humour. It's up to you if that is a good thing or not. 50% - Snowdog
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What the ♥♥♥♥ even is this game and why was it made?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Even for free it wasnt worth the price
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Geez, another of those games that isn't quite bad but not really good either. As the third entry in it's line it did fix a lot of the glitches and problems of it's predecessor. No freezes in combat and your party doesn't block paths. So, plus mark there. Still can't rotate maps. Story wise, even as a satire of fantasy its not that great. The previous games were much more complex and that's saying a lot. Holy just isn't a good protagonist compared to Drake. He's an abusive jerk. I know that's…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →fun game duke nukem meets Jagged Alliance
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm not usually tech deficient, but I cannot get this game to run. I have a 3 monitor setup and it opens half off the screen on one of my side monitors in such a way that its immovable and unplayable. Yea, I could probably just change my display setup and run it on a single monitor...but I got this game in a bundle back during summer sale, and it just doesn't seem worth it. So, if you have a multi monitor setup, be advised before purchasing that this game may require changing some settings to…
