What people are saying

Mixed but leaning positive; fans love the world, but many criticize the story and performance.

Many players praise the game for its beautiful world and faithful recreation of Hogwarts, with some calling it a dream come true for fans. One reviewer notes, 'You can do everything you can't do in real life, like casting magic and talking to girls' (R1). Another says, 'let me live my wizard dreams… mostly by blowing myself up with my own spells' (R2). [1][2]

However, critics point to a weak story, repetitive gameplay, and technical issues. One player says the game 'feels like it's a high-budget fan-fiction game that prioritizes aesthetics over substance' (R32). Another complains about 'unskippable cut-scenes' and lack of pause (R31). Some also allege that the game uses anti-cheat software that affects performance (R29, R36). [32][31][29][36]

Praised beautiful world and atmosphere · faithful to Harry Potter universe · fun combat and exploration

While this game can be awe inspiring with its presentation, both in well motion captured dialogues and the environments, it falls short in most other aspects. The best way to describe it is as wide as an ocean, as deep as a puddle. It's as if you took Witcher 3, pulled out all the main quests and sidequests, leaving only the question mark points of interest and made that the whole game. It's all full of menial chores that you have to drudge through in order to unlock access to what little…

A gorgeous cake with no flavor. The game is like a perfectly decorated cake — if you love books and movies, it’ll catch your eye right away. But after a few hours, you start realizing the recipe’s off. It’s like they made the dough gluten-free for celiacs, salt-free for hypertension, sugar-free for diabetics, and took out any exotic spice just to avoid offending anyone. The result? Something safe for everyone, but totally bland and forgettable. Sometimes, when you skip your diet, you just want…

I'm gonna be real: Hogwarts Legacy is not a game people should be slinging death threats to content creators over. The game sucks ass and should be ignored. Ignore the people playing it. Mute it wherever you think you'll see it. Don't even engage. It's a waste of time.

This is a barely-not-recommend for me. The magic of the Harry Potter universe is certainly there, music and all. But it's marred by creepy smiles on the characters, the repetitive gameplay, the questionable design decisions, and Warner Brothers requiring that you sign a "legally binding contract" (not kidding, that's how they phrase it) that allows them to collect your data before you can even begin playing the game. If you're a huge Harry Potter fan and you don't mind signing your privacy…

I want to like this game, but there is no reason for a single player game to allow so little control. You can't pause, escape out, close the game, or anything else during a large number of long cut-scenes. At first, i thought it was just at the beginning of the game, but 10 hours in they are still inserting 5+ minute long unskippable scene. There is no reason for this game to be so horrible. Just let me pause and continue at my own pace! I need control of my computer. The game doesn't decide…

I am a lifelong Harry Potter fan. I’ve been waiting for this game since the 2018 leaks, but it's an immense disappointment. To put it simply: it’s feels like it's a high-budget fan-fiction game that prioritizes aesthetics over substance. The castle looks whimsical, but the layout is a mess of questionable design choices that ignore established lore, which in turn makes it less magical and believable (e.g., the Great Staircase that pops in and out based on your movement, or the Chamber of…

This game is intended for everyone, so everything from the writing, dialogue, characters, gameplay, and story feels like a game for children. That might be a marketing ploy to gain all gamers, but that's okay. This game had the potential to be amazing, but fell short for a few reasons. Hogwarts Legacy looks amazing. When you look at Hogwarts Castle and Hogsmeade, it feels incredible, and everything inside the castle is beautifully designed. The gameplay is fun too, especially when you experiment with different spells and potions. But other than that, the game falls apart for me. The story is mediocre, and the voice acting is horrendous. It is painfully clear this game was made by Americans. An extraordinary effort was made to ensure a racially diverse cast of characters. This is no bad thing (although somewhat anachronistic), but it has come at the expense of the diversity dimension which is much more important which is diversity among the British isles. The fact that there are near zero students or faculty who speak with a Scottish/Welsh/Irish accent is really bad imo. Half of the staff (and some of the students) being…

If you love the Wizarding World, the exploration alone makes it worth playing.
