I recommend the old movie, "High Noon." I can't help but remember parts of it lately. Like a cowardly town of people who refused to help the good guy fight against the bad guy. Anyone else remember that movie?

I love this clunky old thing. It's born of two inspirations: 1952's High Noon and the gritty aesthetic of Ridley Scott's Alien. It's not the best movie you've ever seen but bless it's heart is doing its best.

Part of what I like so much about A Hidden Life is how everyone in it tries to convince him to in some way attempt to placate the authorities-his wife, the Catholic clergy, the Nazi mayor. It reminds me of another relevant movie, High Noon, where the town is shamed by the Sheriff's refusal to cower.

Jack Smith leaving the Felon's case reminds me of Gary Cooper, the Sheriff of High Noon (1952 movie), leaving that god-forsaken town of cowards and people with no honor. That god-forsaken town feels like this country today. Last scene, Cooper takes off his Star badge and throws it to the ground.

God, did I love this when I first heard Station to Station as a youngster. Loved it even more when, as an adult, I discovered it was written by Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington (of The Ballad of High Noon fame—“Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darlin’”) for the 1957 film of the same name. Still love it.
