Carpenter said "I wanted to remake Rio Bravo so I made ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13" and we were all "Fuck yeah, you did!" Who cares if he was inspired; he made a very different movie.
unlabelledView post →Now watching: Rio Bravo (1959) 2026 is the year I renew my obsession with Rick/y Nelson.
unlabelledView post →This is such a funny idea. You're 20 minutes into Get Shorty and then you have to watch Rio Bravo for two hours. Then you're almost through the movie and, bam, time for the theatrical cut of Touch of Evil.
unlabelledView post →Today's movie is a classic film from a legendary director. Join me as we breakdown John Carpenter's homage to Night of the Living Dead/Rio Bravo in Assault on Precinct 13!
unlabelledView post →RIO BRAVO is very much a No Kings movie masterpiece (just brought this home from the frame shop yesterday)

unlabelledView post →Picking a random film from my collection to show off for no real reason! Day #285 "Rio Bravo" (Howard Hawks/1959) Hawks awesome Western set siege film. A huge influence on Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13. Check it out!
unlabelledView post →One movie a day for 365 days. 100/365: Rio Bravo. Among the many things I like about it, the fact that Hawks plants Angie Dickinson among the guys and she helps Wayne in defeating the villains. It's a western all right, but there's so much comedy in it that it's a joy from start to end.
unlabelledView post →#Deucember 2025, Movie 22: ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 (1976) Finally treated myself to a long overdue rewatch of John Carpenter’s classic updating of siege westerns like RIO BRAVO. Still kicks ass. #grindhouse #filmsky #action #crime #johncarpenter
unlabelledView post →This week on @rememberthispod.bsky.social: Howard Hawks's final films include an African safari hangout movie, a rom-com with Rock Hudson, half-hearted remakes of RIO BRAVO, and a James Caan racing pic that's the best of the bunch. www.youmustrememberthispodcast.com/episodes/how...
unlabelledView post →Inspired by other folks comments and reviews, I'm sat here on a Saturday afternoon watching Rio Bravo for the first time. My dad was a big John Wayne fan, so I can't account for never having seen it before. Angie's great, as are Dean and Walter. It's a different kind of storytelling.
unlabelledView post →So watched THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD and realized just how much a certain generation of horror film was influenced by RIO BRAVO.
unlabelledView post →If anything, it's a tribute to John Carpenter, not only as a skilled director but as a fan of film. This is the guy that loved Rio Bravo and Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster and Double Indemnity. Big Trouble is a movie that only gets made when your tastes are very broad.
unlabelledView post →Picking a random film from my collection to show off for no real reason! Day #270 John Carpenter's action/siege repurposing of Howard Hawk's Rio Bravo employs that rare gift of complimenting it's forebears by refraining from copycat tropes. For me, the film IS Napoleon Wilson! #BluRay #FilmSky
unlabelledView post →first movie back in theaters for 2025 is RIO BRAVO in 35mm at @musicboxtheatre.bsky.social I’ve seen it on the big screen before (TCMFF with an Angie Dickinson Q&A), but this is @812filmreviews.bsky.social (aka the world’s biggest Ricky Nelson fan)’s first time on the big screen.

unlabelledView post →Rio Bravo (1959) It's got pretty much everything a dad could want out of a dad movie--male bonding, violence, guns, period costumes, Angie Dickinson, Dean Martin being drunk

unlabelledView post →I only saw assault on precinct 13 for the first time last year, for movie night. And we were all really surprised that it's basically a zombie movie. In a way that Rio Bravo 100% is not!
unlabelledView post →The common theme of my favorite films is about friendship. ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES, E.T., SEVEN SAMURAI, RUSHMORE, RIO BRAVO, BECKET... What makes me return to those movies is the relationships. The friendships between men. THE LONG WALK is going to be another one, I can tell.
unlabelledView post →"THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY, that's a movie. RIO BRAVO, that's a movie. And THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE, *that* was a fuckin' movie." - what Clarence Worley shoulda said 5 stars. No notes. Go dirty Texas hippies go.
unlabelledView post →Arthur Hunnicutt, Michele Carey, James Caan, John Wayne, Robert Mitchum in EL DORADO (1966) maybe my favorite Howard Hawks film. Like HATARI, RIO BRAVO, you want to keep hanging w/ these characters. Leigh Brackett’s dialogue is sharp & frequently hilarious. Strong villains & action packs a punch.
unlabelledView post →Somebody on Bluesky pointed out yesterday that most of the John Wayne movie Rio Bravo is four men sharing complaints about getting old. I think a lot of people have never been taught to listen. You have to learn that to have a conversation.
unlabelledView post →I would like to see a slasher/thriller type of movie in the RIO BRAVO mode: two “good guys” killed, tops; personal struggles; romance; teamwork; bunches of baddies getting wiped out; maybe a song or two?
unlabelledView post →The heatwave keeps us indoors, so our movie sessions continue: Rio Bravo starring John Wayne and Dean Martin. For hubby’s gluten-free breakfast: cucumber, radishes, grapes, melons, tomatoes, zucchini, strawberries, wild mushroom salad, bell pepper, cherries, apple, cabbage. 🍜
unlabelledView post →There aren't many people around me who can talk about John Wayne these days. It's sad. For entertainment films, there's "Big Jake" and "Rio Bravo." For serious human dramas, there's "The Shootist" and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance." My favorite movie of his is "The Searchers."
unlabelledView post →Tarantino has compared the film to Howard Hawks’ classic western Rio Bravo – a movie which QT loves. He said "It's a hangout movie [like Rio Bravo]. The second time you see it, you're not thinking about the plot anymore. You're waiting for the hangout scenes." 20/42
unlabelledView post →Good morning, Jim. El Dorado was basically the same movie as Rio Bravo. When they were working on El Dorado, someone mentioned to John Wayne that it was the same movie they did a few years before. He supposedly said, "If they liked it once, they'll like it again."
unlabelledView post →Happy 95th Birthday to the legendary Angie Dickinson, retired but iconic Emmy-nominated film & TV actress, #BOTD on 9/30/1931. Acclaimed for her roles in RIO BRAVO, THE KILLERS (1964 version), POINT BLANK, POLICE WOMAN, DRESSED TO KILL, HOLLYWOOD WIVES, WILD PALMS, and much more.

unlabelledView post →Angie Dickinson hold a horse in a scene from the film ‘Rio Bravo’ with Ricky Nelson, 1959.
unlabelledView post →My DVD copy of Rio Bravo has a fascinating (and somewhat snarky) audio track in which iconic horror director John Carpenter and film critic Richard Schickel discuss their appreciation of Howard Hawks, the gravitas & physical grace of John Wayne, and the pitch-perfect dialogue of Leigh Brackett.

There is not a shot that is wrong. It is uncommonly absorbing, and the 141-min running time flows past like running water." - Roger Ebert

unlabelledView post →And Tarantino's movie is actually much older than Rio Bravo was when Carpenter was making Precint 13. Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress was also only around half as old as Dusk til Dawn is to Sinners when Lucas made Star Wars.
unlabelledView post →MAD MAX, that's a movie. THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY, that's a movie. RIO BRAVO, that's a movie. And MENACE II SOCIETY, *that* was a fucking movie. (h/t Clarence Worley)
unlabelledView post →Drop the last movie you watched. Not surprisingly there aren’t a lot of Rio Bravo GIFS on here.
unlabelledView post →Leigh Brackett was born OTD in 1915. "The Queen of Space Opera," she was an accomplished screenwriter and wrote THE BIG SLEEP, RIO BRAVO, & worked on an early draft of EMPIRE STRIKES BACK but died in 1978 before the movie was completed. Only the second woman nominated for a Hugo.
unlabelledView post →Ooh! Also the writer of many books and screenplays, including my favorite movie, Rio Bravo. I should go watch it today.
unlabelledView post →Now keep in mind I'm a HUGE sucker for a good siege movie and the OG Assault on Precinct 13 delivers on a fantastic re-imagining of Rio Bravo! So it is HIGH up in my list for that reason. Well worth your time though!
unlabelledView post →Favorite Movie(s) Right This Second. Rio Bravo (1959) El Dorado prequel. Probably the better movie but, y’know, James Caan. OTOH, Angie Dickinson. What’s yours? #filmsky #scriptsky #cinema
unlabelledView post →"Mad Max, that’s a movie. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, that’s a movie. Rio Bravo, that’s a movie. And Coming Home in a Body Bag, that was a fuckin’ movie.” - Clarence Worley He was right to say it. Coulda said THE 39 STEPS while he was at it, too, because *that's* a fuckin' movie. 5 of 5 stars.
unlabelledView post →I really like it – it is so entertaining. Assaults on Precinct 13 is an interesting unofficial remake. You probably know this but in case you don’t, Rio Bravo was itself a comment on High Noon, so that movie is also worth checking out in this context.
unlabelledView post →Tonight's late great movie is, the hell with it, RIO BRAVO. Always wanted that brick red shirt with the exaggerated cavalry placket.
unlabelledView post →I think it’s fair to say the structure of it is, where it’s two different films almost. Like everybody mentioned From Dusk till Dawn when the movie came out for a reason. But Sinners execution is more like Night of the Living Dead or Rio Bravo
unlabelledView post →Fred Zinnemann directed a great western with "High Noon", which Howard Hawks and John Wayne hated so much, they made "Rio Bravo" in response. Which is also a great western. Thank you for the these two delicious cakes. letterboxd.com/mrcoat/film/...
unlabelledView post →Rio Bravo (1959) - Oh the vibes are near perfect even if Wayne thinks he’s in a totally different movie. boxd.it/cw4HYb
unlabelledView post →have you seen Rio Bravo? one of my fav movies ever, and a fascinatingly political film, at least in motive it was to be an “anti-High Noon”
