However, this game fails on a fundamental level by doing several incredibly big taboos. First: This game doesn't have an ending. That's right, it just...stops. The developer's stated reason is that they saw only a few hundred players reached the end of the latest released "season" so they stopped and didn't make a final ending to the game. Cool. Second: The game is divided into 5…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Galak-Z. A rogue-like top down space shooter. An important point to remember for one does not criticize vision or what should of been. I believe as long as implementation of design is consistent and integral to vision then no matter your skill, acceptance or acquiescence, as long as game systems are functional, then that is enough for the checkbox to be checked, enjoyment not withstanding. Galak-Z starts you off in subsequent missions with your ship state carried over from the last mission.…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Right, so Galak-Z. What a bloody disaster. Picture this: You're a game developer, yeah? And instead of giving players a proper ending, you just... stop. Like a toddler throwing a tantrum and walking away mid-conversation. "Oh, only a few hundred players completed our last season, so we'll just NOT FINISH THE GAME." Brilliant strategy, that. Absolutely genius. Let me break this down like I'm explaining quantum physics to a particularly slow audience member. The game is divided into FIVE…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love so many things about this game. But it has one serious issue: IT'S TOO DIFFICULT. I would only recommend this game if you are sure you will be super hardcore and dedicate a lot of time to beating it. I'm the type of gamer who usually ups the difficulty level on a game during my _first_ playthrough. I like a good challenge. But this game becomes absurd by World 3. I never got past 3-2 or 3-3 I think because it becomes so annoying to play through a level again and again. The…

unlabelledView post →I like the aesthetic, the controls and the general gameplay but the game is just not satisfying. Why, in a space fighter am I constantly fighting in closed environments? Instead of you know, OUTER SPACE? Why do I seem to lose progress when I fail a level, having to restart a previous level? Why have I bought upgrades, gone to the next level, and see those same upgrades un-purchased. Just level after level with marginally better ship and steadily increasing enemies. Not only that but the story…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I REALLY wanted to like this game. Cool, cartoonish Anime space opera action with tight controls, slick laser upgrades and robot transformation mode. What I like: - cool character design, both for the characters, factions and ships - controls are good once you get used to them - sound effects have serious ooomph But the cons outweigh the pros by a loooong shot: - every five missions, all of your upgrades get taken away from some reason, which means the game will become much harder but…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The 80s cartoon design aesthetic is nice but it isn't enough to mask an overly basic, and overly difficult, shooter. The difficulty is unexpectedly brutal, with a single successful assault rendering your ship shield-less and possibly even your hull damaged, however the mess of lasers and explosions often make it hard to tell what’s an enemy’s projectile is and what is just special effects. This isn't bullet hell spam, but just poor artistic choice. Unfortunately, this oversight is compounded…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →★★★★☆ A great, fast-paced space shooter, that feels dynamic and fresh even after 20+ hours. At first, the difficulty might scare you away, but with practise comes pay-off. It becomes challenging, but never too easy (except for the first quarter of the game). The loot system, which also seems harsh, seems to be just right, though I feel like some items should have been more expensive compared to other items. The content of loot you will find in missions are random, as well as the the provisions…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Summary Galak-Z is a top down 360 shooter. + Creative retro-modern style graphics + Smooth game play + Easy to learn, hard to master + Works in Arch Linux - Quick restart is not quick - Voices are corny and repetitive Review You control an upgradable fighter that later can transform into a mecha, like the variable fighters in Macross. The controls are similar to a twin stick shooter but you don't get to use right stick to fire. You use a button instead. Both the fighter and mecha are very…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gosh, I have such mixed feelings about this game. At times it's really fun and satisying and at times you just want to pull your hair out. The controls are a strange choice and frankly, there's a good portion of the population (myself included) who will never master the controls - they are so unintuitive. And that means that you die a lot more because of the controls and not because of the difficultly of the game. But on those days when all cyclinder are firing correctly and you remap your…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't know about this one... the game is not bad, style and puns are actually not bad either (even if just thrown there without underlying logic) but funky controls and a boring plot drag the whole thing down. It's not a "worst game ever" review but for me the experience it's just not enough to be a positive one. Probably recommended to top-down shooter enthusiasts with few years on their shoulders.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really fun rogue-like top down space shooter with visuals inspired by 80's anime like Robotech. Combat feels so cool and satisfying because although it looks like an arcade shooter there's actually a big tactical edge where you have to retreat to recharge your shields and use the environment against your enemies to take their shields down and then move in to finish them off. It nails making you feel overwhelmed but empowered at the same time. The campaign is split up into "Seasons" like it's…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a game I really WANT to like, with its marriage of Robotech/Macross aesthetics and Luftrausers style play, but I find the controls awkward and frustrating.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a great game if you want a game inspired by Macross. The combat is fluid both in ship and mecha form, the enemies are varied, the strategies and combat styles are also varied. There is only 3 bosses technically but all of them are fun to fight. Its probably the best 2D space shooter game I have seen in steam. There even is an infinite mode for people that want to compare scores. Just be aware that a few achievements seem to be bugged and cant be obtained or are harder to get than it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's hard for me to recommend this game. I will do so because the core game is pretty cool when you get the hang of it, but I do so seeing as you get this for really cheap. I feel like a lot of people have this from bundles. Personally, I really wanted to continue after Season 1 with my gathered gear. And that is where me and this game kind of part ways a bit. I don't really like the mech, and I didn't like starting over without gear I had just worked for. For me this was never supposed to be…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is by far the best space shooter available out there and that's especially because of the controls. They are tight, they are perfectly layed out so you can control every single aspect of your moving, dogding and shooting, how every other space shooter out there should allow you to do. Great game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Based on the gorgeous visuals, excellent voice acting and top notch animation you'd imagine Galak-Z is a highly polished space shooter. Wrong! The game is a sloppy, aggressively mediocre space shooter with layer after layer of issues. Look, I've beat Urquan masters on a keyboard. These controls, they're bad. Too many buttons, too many abilities, enemies just drive into you anyway. You feel like you're driving a dump truck at a dump truck wedding and it's just dump trucks all the way down. The…

Game #158 An evolution of one of the very first video games ever One of the very first video games ever was Asteroids https://store.steampowered.com/app/669830/Asteroids_Millennium/ . In this game you flew around a small screen in a space ship while dodging and shooting incoming asteroids. What makes asteroids fun even today are its unique controls. Basically the forward button is your thruster and, depending on how long you hold it, your ship will fly faster or slower in that…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The controls ruin the game. It is not a twin-stick shooter as it might look. You fire in the direction the ship is pointed. Early on you gain a dodge roll and lateral thrusts. The physics is probably accurate to real space, but it goes against all your years of gaming. A big problem is that if you die then you have to start the mission over, losing progress. Also, your ship doesn't automatically heal up between missions; if you scrape by in one mission, you start the next one at a handicap. I…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Best fake Yamato ever. By the way, game IS finished, and controls are Ok.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's just...lackluster. I was so excited to play this after seeing the trailers and previews, but the actual game falls flat for me. The controls are okay but a little clunky and unintuitive, the combat isn't that compelling, and the missions are repetitive. The missions ultimately just feel like a chore that I need to slog through, instead of something I can't wait to return to. The presentation and overall production can actually be pretty great at times - I definitely dig the attempt at…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After meeting the third boss I've decided to idle to get my remaining trading cards. ♥♥♥♥ this not-funny severely imbalanced piece of trash. This is mostly going to end up a collection of annoyances. But they are bad. The controls are buttocks. I wish this was a twin stick shooter instead. You'd feel a lot more badass not have to struggle constantly to get the ship where you want. You can pick up blueprints for upgrades you already have. They don't stack. So you can engage that sentinel…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Come for the nostalgia, stay for the dope space battles. Galak-Z is not a perfect game. The "story" is threadbare (though fans of mech anime will probably find their nostalgia well catered to), the rougue-like elements are minimal, and the pool of items/upgrades is relatively lacking, but the combat (once you get the hang of it) is some of the most thrilling and compelling of any game I've ever played. The feeling of zipping and dodging through space, blasting enemy shields with laser…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great indie games. Mecha fan recommended
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The control scheme has WASD movement which is relative to the position of your mouse cursor, meaning that if your cursor is at the bottom of the screen, A is right and D is left. I got to the end of the second 'season' before the sheer difficulty of maneuvering with this handicap defeated me. Twin-stick controls would be so much more fun.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a Macross fanboy i really love this game!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Galak-Z is an odd duck of decidedly mixed success. The developer's original design for the game seems to be a set of storyish chapters, each with five procedural missions that must be tackled in a rogue-ish run fashion: dying means you start the whole chapter over. Succeeding at a chapter lets you try your hand at the next chapter (or play old ones). Each chapter is its own entirely self-contained run, so you always start any chapter clean and with no upgrades, and you don't keep anything…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very divided on this game. The gameplay is pretty solid, the premise is fun and packed with references, and the characters are enjoyable. Unfortunately in the second season it takes a difficulty jump that left me absolutely gobsmacked. I beat the first season in one hour, then spent three hours trying to get past the first mission on the second "season." Overall I enjoyed the first season, and a better player might appreciate it more, so I'm reccomending it, but the difficulty really…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun gameplay, nice animation and the voice actors did a fantastic job as well. Over-all I got nothing to complain about.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is not bad. Anime gfx are nice. Movement of the ship I also liked. But I lost interest quite soon. It is too difficult. The earlier levels should be much easier to get into it and then the difficulty should be adjusted level by level.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoy a good 360 degree 2d space shooter. Space Pirates & Zombies is one of my favorites, for example. I had this one on my wishlist pretty much just based on word of mouth during it's early access. Unfortunately it didn't end up being what I expected. The controls are tight and simple. That's about all I liked. The structure of the game is lacking. Just a campaign, linear, with surprisingly harsh difficulty that quickly killed my interest in repeated attempts. Chaos of battle due to the…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've picked up Astralbringer (crazy mouse shmup, not actually on sale but that dev prices low and doesn't really do Steam sales), Shikhondo: Blue Pieta (horizontal scrolling shmup), Revo (fast kinda janky gallery shmup), and Beyond Solar (scrolling shmup). I'm looking into Star Vortex and Star Solar (both space ARPGs), but one has a lengthy demo, so I'll spend some time with that for context on those. Space ARPG action standards feel like they are depressingly low, which can be frustrating…

unlabelledView post →I never thought that this game has so few reviews (or maybe something happened them), but, honestly, it felt like an AAA game to me back when I played it, I really liked it, and it felt cool. It has nice combat mechanics and visuals and sounds and music and voice acting. And different weapons that you can upgrade, and it feels rewarding. What adds variety is that story is not completely static, but seasons have several stories mixed up in random order. And music, it can change slightly in…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What a great game!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not bad, but very average. I actually played it for much longer than I thought I would, nonetheless it wouldn't really feel fair to recommend rather average game to others, but if you are a fan of the genre then you might want to give it a try, especially on a sale.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is fun and addictive, but since it's a roguelike it's completely brutal and unforgiving. Even if you do choose the arcade mode where it saves your progress after every mission, you still need to restart every chapter over from scratch. The entire thing bleeds 80's anime like Macross/Robotech and Voltron, so it's a ton of fun even if you die and reset the 100th time.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →70s anime styles space action game. You can switch between a ship (guns, missiles, dodge) and mech (sword, shield, and grapple) mode and will find or purchase upgrades with salvage between each mission. Expressive animations for your character on the bottom left of the screen that shows the effect on him while doing things like boosting or attacking and enemy pilots on the bottom right get the same treatment. Responsive movement. Light on content with limited mission variety, upgrades that are…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good fun for what it is, but it's unifnished and never well be finished, and given that fact 20$+ is a joke. At 10 it's still a bit rich but at least within reason, either way it's hard as balls and over quickly. If you like this style of game and don't mind an abrupt end with no ending give it a whirl, but it do it on a nice deep sale. This should have been discounted into the bargain bin ages ago.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Too short, too many difficulty spikes, and controls are awkward. It stains what can otherwise be considered a fun little free range space shooter with a cool art style and an amusing story. Everything else is good, and I want to recommend this game, but it just doesn't give me enough for 20 bucks.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Would be a lot more fun if it wasn't so brutally difficult. I love everything about this game except actually playing it. The control scheme is too complex and the game physics are a little too loose to juggle all the controls at the pace this game plays.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's not a twin stick shooter and never meant to be one. A quite brutal roguelite shmup/mecha game with "asteroid" control. You don't regenerate health after missions, you have your loadout reset after every season, and you lost all of your upgrades on death. If you play it like a twinstick shooter, or even a danmaku game, you'll die. You're meant to be careful, pick fights you can win, use the environment to your advantage. But when you're on a roll, oh it's so satisfying. Then you die at the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There is a new mode added (Arcade Mode which means that you get continuous) for those of you who didnt like the rogoue game aspects. All in all great game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tried really hard to like it, finally admitting defeat. Certainly not an awful game, but just kept rubbing me the wrong way. Paper-thin plot. Zero payoff at the end of each "season". Not a huge deal, but make me wonder why they even bothered. It's obviously built to be a randomized, challenging rogue-like game, and they probably should have stuck with that. The controls... I never got to grips with them. In the heat of battle, with multiple enemies around, I'd find myself dodging when I meant…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not fun. Not worth a review.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Normally I am not inclined to recommend shootemups - it's an old tired genre, there's little to no value in rehashing it. However, the developers of Galak-Z put in an extraordinary amount of work to make the genre breathe again (in an iron lung kind of way). Gameplay isn't anything special, unfortunately, but if you're going to play a ripoff of Space War from the 1960's, this is arguably the best rendition we're likely to ever see. 3D assets, wide support for controllers and M+KB, modest…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't know about this one. I kind of want to like it, but the controls just make it straight out impossible. The game feels like it should be 'turn the stick left to turn left', instead it is 'turn the stick to the direction you want to go', which is fair enough considered it's a shooter, but there also is inertia, which ramps up the confusion to 11. It looks nice, it feels nice, but the controls ruined it for me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love this game, I like the little aesthetic choices like when you hear the enemy talk they get a little character portrait, the rhumor of the characters, and the cel shaded graphics. Gamplay may get a bit repetitive with a short campagin lists and sum essence of "unique missions every campaign" with rogue like rng. I feel this is fine for the style of game it is. If you have ever watched Space BattleShip Yamato, your gonna dig it. Solid purchase when on sale - 8/10 (because arbitrary…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So many terrible design decisions in this, and each new one makes the previous even worse. Floaty tank controls on top of the perfect aim of the enemies on top of the lazy and overly simple procedural levels on top of the roguelike unlocks and non-replenishing health. If you get stuck on hard stage without some health saved, kiss your ass goodbye and prepare to reload dozens of times, every time on a different, hellish map. Also ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ who even wants a spaceship/mech game to have stealth…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was definitely taken aback by this game, as I got it in a bundle and really had never heard of it. I found it extremely appealing ,even if it's a challenging game and, furthermore, considering I've died lots of times already in season 4, losing any progress whatsoever (still haven't won it). If you are into space combat and the like, you will certainly love it (even more than I do). Thumbs up! ps: the fact that I got it in a bundle IS important.
