60 of 116 · most liked firstOK... even though it's one of the more difficult war-strategy games i've played, i'm still going to recommend it because it really does do everything right, it's just frustrating sometimes when a group of orc riders come out of the fog-of-war, pinpoint your captain and end the game in one turn...... *sigh*..... Pros: -Dialog boxes have (cool role-played) speech. -Tutorial doesn't just tell you to do a bunch of stuff while you fumble with the controls, it shows you how to do it, explains it,…

It's a Russian TBS in a fantasy setting. the 3 different campaigns have enough variety of units to keep you thinking, while the hex-based missions are refreshingly difficult. Story is, let's be generous and say "Familiar" to most fantasy fans and the voice acting doesn't really shine. The graphics are a little dated, but still do a good job of conveying atmosphere. All in all, think HOMM in russian, and at quite a good price. worth it at full price, must-have in a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An OK gameplay for 2007 year game. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1816678656 This game was released in 2007 game, so you should expect square graphics and other outdated things. I passed 3 missions on hard, they were pretty interesting, I had challenge and it wasn't easy. I even restarted a couple times. Gameplay is kinda usual for TBS games. You have a hero and 5-8 other units. Move/attack/perform abilities in turn-base combat. You can hire new units if you lost…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fantasy Wars is a game with very good tactical turn-based battles. Nothing more nothing less. The basic idea is this. You command a few heroes and other military units. You fight a lot of enemies and achieve some goal such as conquering a city. Then you move on to a new mission and do the same kind of thing. This is a lot of fun. Why? Because the tactical battles themselves are really good. For example thee are terrain bonuses that differ between military units and make perfect sense, e.g.…

Lament about the passing of dos, wonder why Sid's Alpha Centuri wont run on their computers and fiddle about tryng to get Age of Rifles and Steel Panthers up and running..... But its really neat when something like Fantasy Wars turns up. It's cheap, its certainly hard, lots of pretty serious wargames…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Regretfully this one misses the mark. The English translation is poor. The developers didn't even bother checking the dialogs - you get buttons without proper labels like "UIOpt_Antialiasing". They didn't even populate some of the warning dialogs. It's a simple TBS, graphics are a bit dated but work well enough in 4K. Alt+Tab causes an error, so their window management code is bad. Runglish translation sadly murders the storyline. You'll be doing yourself a favour just picking up any…

Warhammer, Tolkien, Warcraft - many (similar) elements of these worlds or universities, but with very outdated graphics, but again, do not be discouraged, the fan of fantasy games will not be disappointed with the story. My first campaign was for the orc tribes from the Wastelands, where my task was to massacre the human empires at individual levels (beautiful maps of the fantasy…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Firstly, whoever called the shot of naming this game Fantasy Wars in the English version should be put on trial for marketing suicide. In Russian it's called Codex of War - not particularly original as well, but still a million times better. Secondly, what the hell is going on with this game's reviews? People are refering to HoMM, Civilization, Warcraft... Why? Fantasy Wars is just a better reincarnation of Fantasy General - apparently people didn't remember it much before Fantasy General 2…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a classic turn based strategy game with rpg elements. It reminds me a lot of Heroes of Might and Magic just on a pure battle focused scale. Whats good: - Battle mechanics are fairly well cut and have understandable feedback (you know why u loose when you do) - Unit diversity is hight and they are nonetheless well (enough) balanced some units are a tad bit too strong - Heroes add a good boost in terms of motivation - Challanging if you want it to (3 different difficulty settings)…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a good game and in its own right is a complete experience. Story is good. Feels balanced. That said, I think this game could have been a great game with more work. Ultimately the units are expendable with only limited rewards for keeping them alive. I spent the whole first campaign painstakingly choosing my units lives over timed quest rewards, which the rewards are valuable later while once the units maxed out, swap leveling up other units from the reserve. Ultimately saving…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In a word, Lame. Well that is the first thought that came in mind after playing a few missions. The combat isn't particularly engaging and each scenerio has a very limited turn limit. It is not enemy units that will defeat you, but the clock. There is no reason for this mechanic. If you don't conquer the fort at the other end of the map in 10 turns, you lose. It is simple as that. The AI is terrible. While it is not to hard to beat the each mission, that mechanic is annoying,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game punishes worse players by giving less rewards and makes good players even more OP (gold vs bronze/silver medal). It's hard to get a gold medal from the first run because you just don't know what forces are playing against you, so you will have to repeat the same mission dozens of times or save/load scum your way (not fun). I also don't appreciate mandatory and quite strict turn count limits (remember: getting silver or gold medal is important). If the rewards would be the same and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this out of nostlgic memories of Fantasy General as it is a very similar game (if not a direct fan-made remake). Much nicer game graphics but lacking the beautiful artwork and musical score that made Fantasy General stand out for me. In terms of the gameplay I would say this game is one of the most frustrating strategy games I have ever played. The (unecessary) time contraints mean that I had to be constantly overextending which got me punished by the AI 9 times out of 10. I…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love tactical games, but I have no patience for this nonsense. I got it for like $1.50 but still requested a refund. I think this game had serious potential but the developers just didn't put enough time into it to balance it properly. Maybe the game 'gets better' later on, but there is a seriously bad first impression. I couldn't even get a 'gold victory' on the first map on normal, even after playing it numerous times and trying to learn from my 'mistakes'. Problems 1. The timed victory…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well worth it. Saw some reviews that were overly harsh. I dont know what some of these people seem to have for expectations as for as graphics, etc., or story quality even some made comments on...wow...I thought these comments were absurdly off the mark. This game has voiceovers, a good story, solid game play. You will get your money's worth at the current price level of $4.99. I bought this game a long time ago and I've gone back and played it a few more times since.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fantasy Wars is a typical turn-based game which looks similar to Blizzard's Warcraft 3 graphics, it has a nice background music. This tactic warfare isn't suited for the new era as it uses old mechanics, you have to play to understand what I mean, it's hard to place it in words, I would say it's like the old warfare board game style. There's a time limit as well so it requires more concentration and organization to get things done, you can't just rush things out and have to rely on having the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nice old strategy game, better than most games of this type nowadays.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very hard game. Play on easy. AI is beyond brutal. Victory conditions is/are coded/put by maniac(s)!!! Too bad this brokes game for me because game mechanics is actually very good.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This - on the surface - is a very simple game, but it is complex in its simplicity. It appears to be a fantasy sim with the diversity of characters you can command, and towns and castles scattered throughout the map; however, there really is no building to be done. Gold does exist, but it is only to recruit creatures. If a unit dies - then it is gone, and the longer they stay alive the more experience and skills they acquire. Thus, there is a short-term incentive to win each map level...but…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lovely isometric turn-based fantasy strategy game in which every unit counts.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A pure underrated and hidden gem among the turn based RTS games. It was already outdated when it was released, very "B", made by a small studio from low budget, and yet, something tickling inside of me when I'm thinking about the memories of the game. I really enjoyed my newest third or fourth playthrough, it still had its magic. I don't want to be very strict and making a step by step list about story, characters etc. won't be necessery this time, because I believe the feeling is what matters.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →With three different campaigns and tonnes of tactical depth Fantasy Wars is an excellent old-school turn-based strategy game with hours of playtime.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I attempted to play this game based on the fun I had with another from the same developer. The game itself is not all that bad. It looks very dated, but I don't consider graphics an important part of a grid based strategy, as long as there is a consistent art style. The story seems fairly generic for this style of game, but I did not progress very far to get that much depth from it. The rules and game play are fairly straight forward, and it does offer some strategic depth, however, the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Like orge battle but without anyone play testing it. I got up to one level where I had about 3 turns to make it to a castle or else I lose the level. I couldn't make it within 3 turns so I turned the game play down to easy. It made the board harder. Also you do not get enough gold to replace units so I was doing A LOT of reloading saves. Lastly the enemy units regenerate all their health after one turn it seems. So if you wanted to kill anything you had to do it all in one turn.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is actually a great game.. but.. yea there had to be a but.. Some units have "instant kill" weapons, that slay your main character in a single blow.. and they just ruin the game for me, as it makes me have to load the game 33 times in a battle.. and it is just so random too..
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Mediocre strategy game with bad controls. I'd also like to mention that old 3D games aged really poorly, but few as bad as this one.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well what can i say im a huge fan of the squeal "Elven Legacy" (have them on DRM free version) and i also highly recommend them and not just this one ^_^ but about this one, i really enjoying it (im near the end of the 2nd campaign out of 3) this game is pure enjoyable tactics, great mechanics also has good story and voice acting, graphics is great for that time abit less for our time (mostly noticeable on cutscenes), but if you like tactics it wont mind you a bit ^_^ each mission has 3…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →70 units, of which most new units are just upgrades to lower tier units. 9 types of armies is a lie, there are two types of armies available for custom game. Possibly three if you go through the chore of completing the campaign. The game is slow, requires enormous amount tedious forward planning, almost chess like. So get ready for lots of save loading. Graphics and sounds are mediocre, where colors are way too vivid for my taste, and graphic style lacks the darkness and overall gore. It's…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just have finished this amazing game! What can I say - it's super hard! Especially on the hard level difficulty(what a surprise?! :D). I mean really this game is so tough BUT you definetely should try it if you are a die-hard strategist! Brilliant game!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I rebought that game, because i loved it in my childhood and it is still awesome. If you like Fantasy-strategiegames you won't get dissapointed but be warned, it is not that easy even on normal you have to restart the mission because of the good reaction from the KI, then it won`'t forgive you when you make a mistake.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Think Vandal Hearts, feel the waves of nostalgia wash over your steam wallet like squirt from a camgirl and get ready to lose some hours.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Despite what may be the most generic-sounding title ever conceived, Fantasy Wars is a quietly brilliant little strategy game. Each of the three factions has dozens of different units, upgrades, abilities, heros, and items to use, and the different terrain types and river crossings ensure that you will need to use all of these features to win. What I really like here is that many different army compositions are viable and no units types feel superior; you must use everything you have to win.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →pretty ♥♥♥♥ game. it's very repetitive, the camera is ♥♥♥♥, the story is ♥♥♥♥. the campaign has a medal system (level clear rank with conditions, including a limit of turns to clear) that punishes exploring the map, and exploring the map punishes level clear rank, and then there's a limit of turns to finish the level at all or it's a defeat. and we can restart a level with the condition of erasing all progress after it (so if you are at level 5 and want to clear level 2 again, you have to reset…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't buy this. I love the genre but the translation is ♥♥♥♥ and it's the buggiest game I've ever played. I crashed to desktop three times in the first mission before losing patience and uninstalling.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not a bad little medieval fantasy Turn based strategy for the time. Not too deep, but easy to pick up and play. Colorful and simple, yet enough strategy for a game or two. RATING: 3.5/5
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm convinced that it's literally impossible to succeed at this game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good one like wesnoth but better graphics
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This whole series is great. A little chess game with variable fields of play. No pressure at all
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For 5 dollars its alright if you want to play a dated turn based tactics game in 2019
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Generic Turn based Game, there are better ones to play on the market, don't waste your money on this game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For its current price of 4,99e a must buy for anyone wanting to play a tactical TBS in a fantasy setting. The story isn't much to go by and voice acting is, well.. Doesn't earn an Oscar. But the gameplay is solid. It very likely took inspiration from Fantasy General, which is a TBS classic from 1990's. Challenging scenarios, lots of different units and different classes of units with differing strenghts which gain in strength as they gain xp levels. The graphics are somewhat dated but I…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I LOVE this game! Based off Fantasy General it does so much right. Nearly everything... nearly. I wish that it left in the research part though. Fantasy Wars expansions do not disapoint either. Its not an overly hard game but you'll want to keep your units alive so they can fight again in the next map. Top marks from me. If you like your turn based fantasy strategy, this is for you
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have really been enjoying the fact that it is turn based and not a Real Time click fest. for the price it is a pretty good game I think. AI isnt bad either.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very nice turn-based strategy game. Your units get XP and you can decide which units will make up your army to adapt to your style of play. The story is okay, but nothing earthshaking. The game runs smoothly and very stable. 9/10 from me.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do you remember Fantasy General for PC, from the ancient times? Imagine it with nice 3d graphics (not the best, but enough for this genre), different lore and units, of course, so that is it. Turn based fantasy strategy, focused on combat, so there is no empire building here. Insanely hard, but has fun gameplay.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I remember buying this game for my birthday when it was released, I thought what I was getting myself into would've been Great, instead; it turned out to be a pile of ♥♥♥♥, it wasn't entertaining and it didn't do anything that any turn-based game hasn't covered, this is not worth the 14.99, my advice? Walk away from this game now and act like you never knew it existed.

unlabelledView post →The game feels rather unpolished. For example, there are glaring localization issues, with UI text like 'uiRecruitButton_inactive_hint', and the UI itself feels pretty clunky and dated. The difficulty curve is too punishing for new players, even on the easy setting. The game gives you limited time to complete objectives with a limited number of troops. There is a set amount of gold per mission, severely restricting the ability to recruit new troops. While the game positions itself as a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →UPDATE: The game's foundation is solid; the graphics, music, and sheer amount of content still hold up well today. Plus, it has cheats (you can find them on sites like GameFAQs—they should be easy to locate). And the cheats are very conveniently adjustable, so the game remains challenging. My original review was a bit too harsh. ORIGINAL REVIEW: The game's ruleset is similar to Fantasy General 1, main differences: - A bit more unit developement & loot variety - Fog of war & enemy sight is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fairly simple, but good strategy game. I played it when it came out, and now in 2021 decided to replay it. Still runs like a charm on Win 10, no bugs or any other issues. And it's still catchy. I definitely recommend it. 9/10.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fantasy wars is an underrated gem for those who like the genre. This is pure turn based, strategic combat. This game is difficult, and especially in the later scenarios there is no shame in turning the difficulty down if it's too much (it can get brutal). Good tactics are rewarded and the turn timer puts pressure on you and forces you to take chances. The progression system is actually surprisingly deep and if you try to play this iron man style - you'll find some of the less appealing…
