60 of 202 · most liked first- TL;DR: As with every Soldak game review i posted before i would strongly advice anyone reading this to at least give the demo a try. Soldak titles lack the triple-a quality graphics other titles have, but this is entirely offset by offering great gameplay experience. Soldak Entertainment is a bit of an anomaly in my game collection. I have been buying Soldak games for nearly a decade now, and during that time i purchased virtually every game and expansion pack made. What makes these games…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's come so far since Drox 1, and so far since the first betas. Plays great with a controller, as long as you keep the mouse handy for some menu'ing, and has a lot of options to get the game playing just right. Super easy to mod, and a heck of a lot of fun. The real big change is that unlike a lot of Soldak's other games, this one doesn't quite hit the roadblock around the mid-later levels where you feel super underpowered to the enemy curve. At some point you'll unlock your top tier skills…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Saw this described as Diablo 2 in space, and this is exactly what it is... If you squint at a screenshot. The ARPG elements are great. Cool skill trees. Good customization. A seemingly endless number on unlock-able races that you played with during your playthroughs. The issue is... Everything is so highly randomly generated that absolutely nothing feels interesting or different. Ever. Once you have played for an hour, you have seen everything you will ever see in this game. There is no…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I recommend this game with a major caveat: if you've played Drox Operative 1, there's nothing new here for you. If you haven't played the first game, then definitely play this one. Obligatory "I wish Steam had a neutral option." I bought this without doing much research based on my love of Drox Operative 1 and a history of funwith Soldak's games. When I booted the game and clicked around, I thought I had accidentally started Drox Operative 1. It was at that moment that I began to suspect I…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Part 1: What Made Drox 1 Good and Also Makes Drox 2 Good ---------------------------------------------------------------- Drox Operative 2 is a Diablo/Torchlight type game in space, with a twist. The twist is, you're taking part in a 4x game being played by all the NPC empires. The empires build ships, develop their planets, gradually colonize, and engage in diplomatic relations with you and each other. It's a nice touch because it makes each game world dynamic. The quests you get are…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is so addicting....pew pew pew!!!!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In it's current state this game is so much like the first one i don't see the point in buying it. If you have played the first this one offers nothing new. Maybe later that will change.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an amazing game. You're a mercenary playing inside a 4X game that the AI plays around you, and plays it well! While this looks a lot like the first game, it has SO MUCH more stuff this time around, and really fleshes out what works well without breaking anything. This is really a superb game that you need to play.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Feels incomplete and poorly polished. - Balancing is off. Way off. - Descriptions are walls of text where it's hard to compare items to one another. Comparison mechanics are very poorly done and often plain wrong. - Descriptions do not account for bonusses, making it impossible to figure out which item is better. - Areas are FLOODED with random pirates you have to push through if you want to go anywhere. They are usually some sort of quest target. As a result, you fulfill hundreds of missions…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sadly, this cannot be called a sequel. It is basically a "modded" version of Drox Operative 1. I hoped it would be more, but it is not. I like Soldak games and it pains me to do this, but I have to give this game a negative review, for this is a blasphemy. I wouldn't mind if that would be a cheap DLC for Drox Operative 1. But how can you just make a game update and re-release it as a sequel? This is preposterous. This feels like a greedy release, something that often big corporations do with…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An addictive game in a very literal, real sense of the word. Tell yourself you'll give it a try for about 20 minutes around noon, and you'll soon wonder where your entire day went - when you finally look at the clock and realize it's 3am. Have you played Diablo, Grim Dawn, Path of Exile, Torchlight, Titan Quest, or any of those other countless hack and slash loot pinatas? That's what this is, only replace the people with cute little space ships (that grow MUCH larger as you level up). Throw…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to like this game buuuutt it is EXTREAMLY grindy. Got to Level 8 or 9 and had only one new weapon type from the beginning. Explored hundreds of anomalies and all of them fit into 4 or 5 types (Boring). There is tons of stuff to find its just the same old junk over and over and over and.... over.... and.... zzzzzzzz... The screen is filled with space junk and anomalies that are just the same stuff... Junk. So it you want to explore a VAST GALAXY that is one inch thick this is the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's virtually identical to the first one. To the point this really should have been an expansion rather than a "new" game, because it's not a new game. The UI is identical, most of the ship types are identical. It is in fact the exact same game with a few tweaks and additions here and there. Even some of the long standing problems are the same, why can't I zoom out more so I can actually see what I'm doing? The only view that is even remotely useful is zoomed all the way out, and even then…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's an interesting game but I feel like once you've beaten a couple sectors you've kinda seen it all. Was really hoping for some cosmic horrors mixed in with all the starships and dogfighting but I haven't encountered anything scarier than a touhou-like bullet hell of missiles and energy projectiles.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You are playing spaceship diablo while acting as a puppetmaster pulling the strings of a bunch of AI that are playing stellaris in a procedurally generated map. The graphics and UI won't win any awards but the game loop is unique and engaging. I am really enjoying it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just like the previous with a few refinements and new mechanics - if you liked the first you'll like this, and if you didn't like the first you won't like this. If you aren't familiar, the Drox franchise (and Soldat generally) are giants in a very niche space of indie developers that manage to squeeze in staggeringly complex universe simulations into small packages (Trese Brothers being the other obvious shout-out). The nice thing about the Soldat games in particular is that you can more…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I did enjoy this title for a time, it gave me the mindless ARPG kick and with a nice little twist that was actually meaningful. However, as I play longer I find neither the ARPG part nor the twist, i.e. the simulated world that gives meaning and character to the gameplay environment compared to the usual hand-crafted ARPG environments, offered the creative playfulness and depth required keep the flame going. I believe the title would be much better if all the simulated environment would…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →From the heavily jank beginnings, Soldak has somehow both come a long way and seems to be exactly where they were 20 years ago. Drox Operative 2 is largely the same game as Drox Operative 1 with a few add-ons, and while there seem to be more effects processing and stuff in the background, the graphics even seem the same. By which I mean "these are the same ship models." The menus and interface are just a paint job of difference from every other Soldak game (regardless of medieval fantasy or…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I recommend this game because it can be fun. I do not recommend this game because it is not a sequel. This is a revision of the original game. Please Soldak, make a new engine or pay for use of another. This is the last Soldak game I get on this engine. I don't care what innovative plan you come up with for the next game. It will still be the same skills/items/factions/quests. Take everything you have learned and make a new game, please.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sometimes, just pure procedural fun is what I need. No pre designed quests....no issues...just whatever the algorithm decides.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For people who liked the first title in the series this game is seems the same at first sight, but when playing it turns out to be way better. More minor races and better graphics. Definitely a good game to pick up. For people who do not know the series, it is like a dungeon game (Diablo-ish) but then in outer space. You have like 10 operatives (character classes if you will) you can choose to start with, each with a (slightly) different play style. For example the Shadow have stealth, which…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →imagine if you were a spy messing with galactic politics in stellaris or something. You're basically playing an arpg and the computer is playing a 4x game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Armada for gamers in the 21st century. It's like Diablo and Armada had a love child that was raised by a 4X and SPAZ couple. It's fun for those who like bullet hell games as well. The game is very good and the price is generous. If you find it on sale, don't hesitate!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you own the first game already, this is currently hard to recommend for the price. If you don't own the first game, it's a pretty entertaining indie ARPG set in space, with a lot of rough edges. Differences between the first and second game, there is a new skill tree system with "class specific" skill lines providing a lot more replayability, and there's a bunch of new variations on weapon types, those are pretty much the only noticeable things. Better graphics? Not really, it looks exactly…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There's a speed cap on your ship. Unfortunately, it's not very high. One of the first upgrades you can do will dramatically slow down your ship if your helm stat isn't high enough. This isn't very convenient for a game about space exploration and diplomacy. The combat gets tedious very quickly, you can even get weapons that auto aim, so you just fly somewhere, keep both mouse buttons pressed and see random stuff explode around you. The interesting part of this game is the different races and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has a really cool concept but I can't recommend it because the game's UI is clumsy, unintuitive, and frankly ugly. From the moment you start the game opts to just throw you in with not much direction or instruction. You get small little popups that you have to figure out you're supposed to click, which give either very brief useless information "Use WASD to move around" or "Here's every keybind in a list". The portraits for the different races are very cheap looking, like deviant art…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of my favorite space games when I just want to blow stuff up and enjoy the grind/building up my ship and crew.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am having the most fun I ever had in this type of game. The way the game unfolds its own story in each play session is entirely unique. It is a shame that this game got so little attention by media and players.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was released too early out of early access. I have already encountered several bugs.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I originally wrote a negative review due to my own impatience. My bad. Now that i got the hang of it, it is amazing. It can be a bit tricky and even downright frustrating at times, but it is totally worth it. Not really sure who this game would appeal to, honestly. It is quite repetetive, and despite all the things you can do, it can feel a bit shallow. Personally, i just love watching the numbers rise, tweaking my stats, getting the right equipment and fnally going ham on anything and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's... cool, overall. I wouldn't say the game is GOOD, it's just interesting. The concept that the trailer says, "play an ARPG inside a universe of aliens playing a 4X game" is definitely true; from the player's perspective, you are playing what's 100% a space ARPG with equipment, upgrades, WoW-styled inventory bags, quests, fast traveling, a variety of weapons, stats and a skill "tree". Everything but you is competing in space politics, space exploration, space backstabbing, space resource…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →broken game. The latest update made everything not work. The screen is now pixellated blurs with red X's everywhere.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a good game. Easily my favorite diablo-like, including Diablo.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tbh I would rather a desktop and build that myself. If I wanted a laptop I would most likely be looking for very low specs and cheap, so second hand. Got a laptop with a 2011 pentium CPU somewhere and it works perfectly fine on Linux, even got a few games on it. Drox Operative 2 runs at 60FPS, kinda makes me wish we had more 2D games these days as they can run on pretty much anything.
unlabelledView post →It's a lot like people describe it - an ARPG spaceship looter. The maps and enemies don't really matter too much as you can always go to a new map with fresh enemies. Your ship is what stays with you, unless you play HC and die (or you break your components there). So, your goal is to gain XP, loot, and credits (credits for more upgrades on your loot via NPC techniques). There's a fairly huge variety of ways to do that, whether it's making alliances or just outright obliterating everyone.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a typical Soldak game yet in space stage. Totally love it, but is it your thing? Ask yourself this: Are you tired of triple A games' dashing graphics? Are you tired of modern games' boring, grindy and repetitive content? Do you want to experience an ARPG in a dynamic AI world with 4X elements and Diablo's item drop system? if the answer is yes, then this is your game, same thing goes with the other Soldak games.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For an overhead view, space themed RPG, I think they did a good job. The publisher took their engine and slapped many different skins on it to make some games (including other Fantasy RPGs, which I appreciate). You can manage political discourse among the different races, which adds another dimension to the game. Personally, I would have enjoyed some trading in the game too, or fleets but I still enjoy this.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →X4: Foundations. Just started a new playthrough with the Kingdom End DLC. Its the closest to Eve online, except being offline, singleplayer, pausable and moddable. It supports many playstyles and can also be played semi afk, which i like. At times it can be incredibly frustrating because the UI is complex and the AI of your fleet members can be very stupid. Still i enjoy just doing my thing, playing for a bit, save and continue later. Not a lot of games support this. Others that do for me…
unlabelledView post →Strangely, this almost feels like a spaceship version of Windward. It's not a space sim, you're simply an rpg-ified ship defined by the race you've picked, growing to a larger but slower ship and different model each point in a specific part of your skill tree; you work for an auxiliary mercenary faction called Drox that has no presence outside of what players are present, helping or hindering the various factions as they play a little 4x with one another and compete with the various neutral…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Diablo, except you control a singular spaceship, set within a 4X universe. It's good.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros: This is like Drox Operative 1 with better graphics and some new features Cons: This is like Drox Operative 1 with better graphics and some new features Come on Soldak we could've done with some new stuff, I got tired playing walking on galactic egg shells with lasers and missiles after 1500hrs in Drox Operative 1, Something new was expected after a few years but this is the original game with a spit shine and some bells glued onto it. a bit disappointing imho but yeah if Steam had a Eh…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Edit 11-9-2021 : Cool,I was able to tweak some files so now not so grindy. Fun space game. The graphics are not triple A,but options make up for it. You can make the game as hard or as easy as you want. There are good mods and stuff on discord. https://discord.gg/JKGgScMB The link up here and mods on there thanks to Darkness. Original Post: I can recommend because it's likable. It's good, but Anti-cheat in single player. I pay for fun,not tedium. I have 0 tolerance for it. Does not serve my…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game keeps growing, dive in, 'Diablo In Space With Alien Pals', c'mon in.. My ship completes the Kessel Run in 63 parsecs.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So much fun to play! Can't get enough of it. Highly recommended!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So this is the same base game, but stuff is being add constantly. This is a good thing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Yeah it says 3 hours, but I've played this more on other platforms. If you're going to play one game from Soldak Entertainment, pick this one. I view this as the peak of their creativity with the type of game they're known for, and I wish they went forward with this space concept to another title. This is pretty much Drox Operative 2.0 more than a sequel, but the refinements are good to the point that you really shouldn't bother with the first game at all.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Diablo 3 in space with a 4X game being played in the background. I keep coming back to this game. Could it be better? Absolutely. But the bones of this game are super sturdy. The gameplay loop is fun. After a while you start running out of new things to do. If this game had a better coat of paint on it and a better notification system that doesn't overtake your screen, I bet it would be way more popular. There are buttons and text everywhere, however, I found that most of it makes a lot of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Star control meets Diablo :) Highly recommended - nice progression, settings, and well balanced everything. I played drox1 many years ago, now this is almost the same, others listed the small differences - and after all this time it is still highly addictive, you have been warned :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game, needs another sequel
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A spaceship ARPG with the NPCs playing a 4X game against each other. It tickles my inner loot goblin. There's a ton of different weapons and equipment, ships, etc. It's very fun. One thing I'd suggest is to go into settings and disable the notifications that fly across the center of the screen. Thankfully you can disable screen shake as well!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is level based, weapon based, faction based and also has quests. By default it has 11 races(ships) unlocked but you are able to unlock many more by doing quest. Each race has 2-4 sub races you can unlock. Achievements give you enhanced drop rate. You are basically not tied to any race, you are a free agent(sorta). You work for Drox Operative, you either win yourself or you help choose the winner of the sector of the universe. Drox Operative 2 is the best game Soldak Entertainment has…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →really interesting game concept, and it's executed well imo. to analogize: playing as a mere cog, getting to choose which machine i work for and which machine(s) i sabotage; all whilst acquiring upgrades and leveling up, makes for such an engaging gameplay experience. it's exactly what many have said. it's diablo in space, but in a 4x setting where you are not the leader of an empire but an operative of a shadow organization working behind the scenes. you are just a single ship and the object…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lots of ways to upgrade your ship depending on your play style. Each new sector allows you to build your ship with even more powerful components. Lots of replayability.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Inventive space ARPG. Soldak games push the boundaries of what game worlds can be, allowing them to live and breathe without assuming that the player is the center about which the universe turns. If you haven't experienced a Soldak game before, this is an excellent place to start. You'll want to read a guide or watch a Let's Play to avoid feeling overwhelmed. But once the idea of the game clicks, it's magical and will make all other game worlds you play in feel hollow. If you've played the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun little Space Trading/Combat Game that could be described as Diablo in space. Those who have memories of playing Escape Velocity Nova, will enjoy this little title.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Titan Quest, IN SPACE... Pros: #1. The game is not graphically intensive AT ALL. I run it at 2K resolution, and it only uses 30% of my GTX1070 (but with that being said, the game's graphics is mediocre). #2. The game is LITERALLY like any other ARPG that you've ever played: There's many zones, and you move from zone-to-zone just killing stuff, gaining experience and getting loot. You can do quests too, but I find quests to be redundant and highly recycled. It's WAY faster to just kill…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's pretty difficult and deep. I like it quite a bit. I wanna see some of this team's other games.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Drox Operative 1 was good and Drox Operative 2 is basically more of the same, so...
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First, if you like Drox Operative then this is a more polished upgrade of it; a very nice and worthy overhaul. If you like ARPGs but wish that the success of every quest wasn't just a forgone conclusion that , "Yes. Yet again, I will succeed." then DO2 might be what you want. Things can get tense as you fly about the galaxy in the role of a freelance muckraker and covert fixer for the Drox Operatives. This game isn't a game where you reach the end of the story line and then you win either. DO2…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was just thinking tonight I wish they made a new version of Drox Operative, and 5 seconds later this popped up in google. Don't worry that it's Alpha, this is basically done. The answer to my prayers. -Devs are active and doing continual updates (doesnt seem to lose any progress) -Graphics much improved -Great balance changes compared to first game including easier leveling (less grind) ***NEEDS FURTHER UI SCALING*** Menus still look a bit small on higher resolutions
