positive · AI labelView post →I played the original NES versions back when they were first released and, yes, I am old. My partner and I played through the DQ1 in probably about 14 hours counting a bit of grinding. Yes, there is grinding in a DQ game.....shocker. I am not understanding why some people are complaining about that particular aspect. In addition, the bosses are brutal on every difficulty mode and actually require you to pay attention to the skills you use and build up your levels instead of facepalming…

neutral · AI labelView post →My first true entry point into the Dragon Quest series has been these original games. I delayed playing the others, hoping Square Enix would eventually release a version of the first few games to give me context—a decision that, in hindsight, seems like a mistake. Let me be clear: these are not bad games. They are standard JRPGs filled with well worn conventions and tropes, but that is entirely expected since they are the games that defined those tropes in the first place. As someone who has…

neutral · AI labelView post →Unfortunately there is a softlocking bug in the late game that I happened to get preventing me from being able to finish the game. After receiving the Lyre of Ire it was removed from my inventory and I can no longer trade it for the staff of rain preventing me from accessing the final area of the game. This bug should have been caught during development and testing but looks like it slipped through. This also prevents the Shrine of the Spirit from spawning as well. I do not recommend this…

positive · AI labelView post →"How could you play this long and say that?!" So, having played both Dragon Quest 1 and 2 in this collection I can say that while these games certainly function... they aren't good representations of what makes Dragon Quest interesting. Sadly, there's just a lot of questionable decisions regarding moves and flavor that, I feel, are emblematic of a lot of remakes: This is a Dragon Quest game for people who don't really like Dragon Quest. The use of cutscenes instead of emergent discovery via…

neutral · AI labelView post →My experience with Dragon Quest 1 started in 1988. I was 4 years old and just learning what games were. I had little concept of the strategy behind it, but the music, the sounds, and the feelings are something I've carried with me. I tell you this because the music, the sounds in this game trigger all the nostalgia from that 4 year old boy 37 years ago. The first two hours I have played transported me into a time of blowing into cartridges..... being wired into the console and it just being…

I knew about it mainly because of the great Akira Toriyama and his work, but I had never actually played the games before. From the beautiful 2D graphics and the unforgettable music to the unmistakable art style, everything feels crafted with…

neutral · AI labelView post →Beware of what you're getting into here! ___ This game is a Remake package of the first two Dragon Quest games that totally revamps everything but the foundation of those two classic. Both games look gorgeous in that HD2D artstyle, play very well and have lots of QOL features to boot. The writing is also excellent for both entries and enhances everything about DQ1+2 (where the story was rather barebones in DQ1 it is now rather fleshed-out and in DQ2 you get constant banter between your…

I've seen some complaints about it having too many differences from the original game and ... like ... the original game was a 10 hour playthrough and 90% of that was grinding the same enemies over and over so you could buy the next weapon and stand a chance getting to the next area. I recently replayed the original NES version and I imagine it's nigh-unplayable for anyone without nostalgia for it like I have. Anyway, if you liked the DQ3 remake,…

unlabelledView post →Only played DQ1 at this point, but just for it, I cannot recommend this game. Dragon Quest/Warrior 1 was built around one-on-one battles, the remake seems to have the same level of monsters, but it's not one-on-one anymore, they dog-pile you. It very quickly reaches a point where monsters are dealing enough damage in groups that you can either heal, or attack, but not both. Better hope you kill a couple before needing that heal, otherwise you're just dead. Oh? They fizzled you? Guess you'll…

unlabelledView post →First, a heads up: Do NOT play these games before playing the HD-2D Remake of Dragon Quest 3. These new remakes were redesigned in various ways so that your experience will be DEEPLY ruined if you play 1 > 2 > 3. I can't say more without spoiling stuff, but trust me. Play 3 first. Then 1, then 2. I am writing this review as a form of procrastination, so it's unproductive and I should be scolded. Anyway, I will first comment on the games individually, then as a single trilogy experience.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just for some insight, this is my 5th DQ mainline game, after 11, 8, 10 offline, and the remake of 3 from last year. DQ1 was by far my least favorite. I'm sure Dragon Quest II HD will be better, but good god, the remake to DQ1 might be one of the worst JRPGs ever. The balancing is absolutely abysmal -- I see why people were complaining after I got towards the end of the game. Why bosses get to act twice is pretty unclear when that wasn't in the original, what is the point of enemies casting…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is everything I was hoping for after playing DQ3HD2DR. There are a lot of naysayers in the comments, but most are just people who like to get attention by complaining. Some of the points make no sense. First, this is a REMAKE. So the story got overhauled and linked to DQ3 much better than the original. Since DQ3 was a prequel, 1 and 2 never had any references to it at all except, the hero was the original Erdrick. Now, there are themes, locations, characters, whole story arcs that…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game. The definitive version of Dragon Quest 1 now. They've added so much new content, it's incredible. The worlds are beautifully realized. Playing this game is like going back home again, and it's so much better than I remember. One word of warning, though - Draconian Quest is HARD, especially for Dragon Quest 1. Since you've only got the 1 party member, it's BRUTAL. Rises to the level of being unwinnable BS towards the end of DQ1. So I would not reccomend it. So if you're looking…

unlabelledView post →Great game. I’ve beaten DQ1 already, which took about 25 hours on normal difficulty. I did not need to grind XP to defeat any of the bosses, but I did overly depend on “cop out”. My end level was 40. I earned all of the achievements. I’m also an average-ish player. Dragon Quest 1 was one of my favorite games on the NES (technically, Dragon Warrior); playing through it again is comfort food. It’s not just the nostalgia of replaying it, it’s the simplicity of both the game mechanics and story.…
