There is a lot good about this game.. As of this writing, seventy-five percent of the people who play like the game. The game deserves the approval it gets. It really hurts to be *that* close to giving the game a big thumbs up...only to find I can't. My complaint? No save game feature. I'm not saying the game is in iron mode and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I walked into a large, empty house. After taking out the one zombie and patching myself up, there was a mannequin just in my field of vision. Okay, cool, whatever. So I'm exploring the rest of the house and gathering what I can but oddly the mannequin was..following me? That's when I noticed there's not one, not two, but seven of these things only moving when I'm not looking at them. I make my way to the exit and close the doors behind me. I thought that was it, so I crossed the street to the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →tl;dr I can't justify paying $10 for a game when free lovecraftian roguelikes offer way more content and depth, namely Infra Arcana. I like traditional roguelikes, so I was excited to see this game on my steam page. "Finally", I thought, "an actual ROGUE-like and not another generic trash indie rpg with permadeath." But after playing this game, I'm kind of disappointed. I've played quite a few roguelikes like Cataclysm and Nethack, but compared to them this game is really lacking in…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great concept, with a lot of potential. But it feels half finished, like a demo really. I don't mean the graphics, I quite like the way it looks. The sounds design works great too. But game play just feels like pointless wandering, adding up to nothing. I wish this developer would somehow set this up so people could make their own workshop adventures for it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has no save feature. At the end of the session you lose all progress. That's a terrible loss in a game. But, the developer says, there's a reason for it. This game is supposed to deliver a short and intense experience, not really about surviving good, but about committing suicide in the face of unimaginable horror. This is paraphrased from the developer's response to another review. Presumably, the no saving parts is meant to make the player carry out the last part of that plan. This…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was actually mostly enjoying myself on this until the game chose to erase literally all my progress over the seven hours of play through what I believe to be no fault of my own. It's suitably creepy with a good amount of crafting discovery. It's also punishingly difficult, with no visible difficulty curving on its procedurally generated maps and it will kill you, like that, and frequently, and for no reason. You gradually learn more and learn to survive longer, but it's never for too long.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →adding a save button would make the game many times greater tbh
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DISCLAIMER: Yes, I did read the game's description before buying. The game's description is true to its' words. Even then, that didn't hinder me from writing this review. One can't escape bad reviews by stating things people might not like in the game's description. It is a $10 game after all. I really wanted to like and recommend this game, but I couldn't. Here's why: 1. No option for SAVING. Seriously. I saw the dev said in one of the reviews that it was for immersion. Here's the thing.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Door in the Woods is a Great Survivor Horror Roguelike. Not for the faint of heart as it is brutal and you will be put in situations of inescapable death as is the theme of the game. Great atmosphere, good interface and a unique challenge.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very cool concept and style, but it got boring and repetitive really fast. After five hours I just couldn't be bothered to continue playing the first two or so days over and over again, collecting the same items, going through the same buildings, and inevitably getting killed by the same vampires and mimics. On the rare occasion that I got a really good run going, managing to collect food, water, a good gun and a stockpile of ammo, I ended up getting killed by some creature with a vaguely…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Door in the Woods is actually a lot better than I was expecting it to be, and it is well worth full price. The horror isn't just skin-deep. Gameplay and game mechanics also adhere to the horror theme. The atmosphere is bleak and the monsters are dangerous. Mostly you will run and hide from them, but sometimes you get the weapons and equipment together to kill a few of them. Each monster has different behaviors and abilities. Vampires won't come into a house uninvited, and will instead…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This Game Hates You Imagine a nightmare from which you can never wake up. It only ends when you die—only for you to find yourself in the same nightmare again, again, and again. There's no salvation to look forward to, only the sheer survival instinct that pushes you onward to your fateful end. You can't go on, yet you will go on. The best thing you can hope for is to fail better. That's Beckett. That's life. That's Door in the Woods . I wrote my first review for this game after only three…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When I saw this game I expected something really akin to C:DDA, but instead I was just teased with the game's mechanics in a lackluster game. It's fun and all, for a bit. There's a really low upper limit to what you can do, and that gets even lower with certain scenarios and characters. You WILL get bored of this. But that's up to you for when that happens.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a fun to play as a arcade game to see how far you go but doesn't give much story-wise or atmosphere. The developer has been inactive for a while and the game hasn't been updated for even longer. I don't recommend it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I agonized for a while over what score to give this game, because this really isn't a game for everybody. It's not a game that's guaranteed to appeal to even ASCII afficionados, making it a niche product within a niche genre. But, if it turns out that you're the type of oddball that the game was made for, then it's bloody brilliant. Dark, bleak, moody and very unforgiving, Door in the Woods is an ASCII horror game where survival is never guaranteed, even if you think you've mastered the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Can't say much nice about this game other than that the graphics style is nice. The gameplay is very slow and frustrating, you walk around looking for useful stuff and eventually you will be killed by some creature. There are different scenarios you can play but apart from the first one they are locked. You have to collect enough points during your runs to unlock them. Thing is, that there is the option to lose all points you have collected if you die with your sanity completely gone (which…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros: + 3d ascii effect is neat + being able to play mostly with left hand makes this game laptop-friendly if yours doesn't have a numpad + visual touches like the body parts of dead monsters being the letters that make up the monsters' name Cons - I've encountered only buildings and forests, no other areas (are there other areas?) - I've only encountered a couple different building types, and even those are largely similar, leading to severe lack of variety - after dozens of runs I have…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to like this game, and there are a lot of aspects I do like about it. It's a grizzly, gruesome, unforgiving Lovecraftian horror game that manages to create a sense of constant dread and paranoia without anything more than some ascii character. Huge props to the creator for pulling that off in a way I've seen very few other games do with so little. That being said, this game is not for those who find "big risk, negative reward" style games to be rage inducing. I've had three different…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First game I have ever refunded, and I hate myself for doing it because I think it hits some fantastic ideas but doesn't quite execute on them. I love classic horror and I love rougelikes, and I love what the game is trying to do, but I just don't think it achieves it. Maybe I am too stupid to get it, but I just don't understand how this is supposed to be enjoyable. I love the theme of hopeless horror the game tries to envelop, but unlike the only concrete goal in the game, to gain…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game, well...compared to any of the other roguelikes on steam, it's a legitimate rip-off, it doesn't have save/load even, so a game that can be played for hours can't be saved at all, and has looping content rather than an actual map. (or entirely procedural one), meaning you can get new items and keep 'going' but you never actually leave the same rough area. There are no update news items or tickets, and the discussion board doesn't have them either. the Dev counts methods of dying as…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →tl;dr: Waste of good Ascii Graphics on subpar gameplay mechanics. Fun for a while but eh... Let me start with this. The game is BEAUTIFUL from an ascii standpoint. Seriously if this game was something like Dwarf Fortress, CDDA, or other text-based graphics games it this one would top the charts. Sadly... it's not. The game is kind of mired down not just by the lack of saving (which has already been covered in other reviews), but by the main mechanic which drives that which is "Experences" .…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Minimalist horror at its finest. Great for a stressful 10-20 minutes before unceremoniously meeting your inevitable death, leaving you with a pounding heart and trembling hands. Each life teaches you lessons through failure in a world that is obscure enough to allow for mistakes, but very clearly tells you exactly how you miscalculated one precious second after the fact. A uniquely presented experience well worth the 10$ asking price.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →its super bare bones and the only cool thing about this game is how the trees and walls look
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not a fan. The world is pretty empty, as far as postapocalyptic roguelikes go. The game puts you in pretty unwinnable combat situations by necessity, since that's where all the resources are and stealth options are nonexistent, so it becomes pretty quickly repetitive and more reliant on RNG than I'd like for any roguelike. Beautiful atmosphere and UI, however..
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hegel first put forward the theory that we only exist in the eyes of others. We are nothing except the way others perceive us. Our society is based on having another being to connect to, to see us, and in return we see them. We are insulted by their belief that they are equal or perhaps even superior to us, and so we hurt them. We cannot justify our existence from logic without their gaze. They have to exist, because we see them, and the only way we can hope to exist is for them to see us. They…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Had this game on my wish list and finally bought it on promotion. Dark, unforgiving and bleak. Don't expect to carve out a comfortable living space, this is a desperate struggle for resources and survival. Good mechanics and atmosphere, I wish it was more fleshed out, more items, areas and end-goals. As such, this game isn't really my preference like Don't Starve or Project Zomboid, and I can't recommend this.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was in a tight spot, cornered in a small patch of trees. My sanity was almost gone and i had three hungry V's on my tail. I decided to end it, unfortunately i had used my only bullet on a CENTIPEDE the previous day. I equipped a kitchen knife and clicked "suicide"..... Only to discover i was not dead.. just bleeding a slow death.. My sanity now at zero.. V's still closing in. My suicide mission suddenly became a mad dash to save my measly 17 experience. I patched my wounds, somehow managed to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you're a fan of ASCII roguelikes, survival horror, or ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ your pants when you see the letter H, this is a title for you. The playthroughs are short and brutal. The enemies are strong and you'll be lucky to survive more than a handful of fights. You'll be thirsty, starving, and insane as you limp into your second night. When you open an innocuous door only to see the ungodly form of a horror looming before you, you'll laugh because you knew death was coming, and here he is. Hello old…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was on the verge of starvation, so I ventured out, weak with hunger. I explored maybe two houses before I came across a slightly larger one. Wow, this guy must be rich, he's got to have some food. So I broke down the door with aching muscles, and stumbled about in the early morning light. I ripped open cabinets and searched through rubble on the floor, to no avail. I burst open another door, and beheld a cat languidly sitting in a beam of light. A moment of deliberation, then I readied my…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great spin on the traditional roguelike. Its two most obvious influences are Infra Arcana and Brogue: it's pared down from the maximalist classics of the genre, is mouse-friendly (infact, it requires a mouse. As another reviewer noted, there are times where you need to see what a distant item is and there's no way to do that with just the keyboard), and is heavy on mood. Moody music, moody graphics, moody scenarios, moody mechanics. It's very much a horror short story simulator, emphasis on the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of my favorite roguelikes, but be warned that the experience system is kinda weird. The longer you survive, the more experience you get. You can use that exp to 'level up' a trait and leave behind a note to find in another playthrough, or you can save it up to unlock new characters and scenarios. If you go insane in a round and die, you lose all saved up exp. If you weren't insane when you died, you keep the exp in the next round/menu. Each scenario is also like a completely…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There's a strong incentive to commit suicide if you feel madness closing in on your character, because Experiences (the game's meta-currency) are entirely lost if you die while stark raving mad. Ten out of ten. Eleven out of ten. Eleventy-one thousand out of ten.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Is this a good game? Yes. Does it seem a bit lacking in depth, and relatively uncomplex when you get into it? Yep. Do you think it's a cool game to play for like 6 hours and then wander off and do something else? Pretty much. Short and lackluster, but honestly still a cool game. I just wish it had... more to it. More monsters, more items, more areas, more things you can do. I do love the lack of graphics though, ASCII is fun.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun little rogue-like game. Very stylistic. But gameplay is not very intriguing enough to keep someone interested for more than an hour or so. It is NOT worth 10 bucks at all. Get it on sale for cheaper, otherwise ignore. I am not going to recommend a game that is not worth the price, feels like something you'd buy for 1 or 2 bucks or get free from gog...
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Door in the Woods suddenly appeared in my radar and after a few moments of thought I decided to risk it and buy it in a whim... And it left a pretty good first impression. I walked around the world until I stumbled with a big mansion, after I tried to brake my way in I found a single zombie which I dispatched quickly by quickly learning the controls. After the encounter I explored the mansion and found the color red for the first time, I didn't remembered there was other colors in the game so…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →boring, nothing like the trailer The book just serves to make some interesting text in the trailer, and takes up a inventory slot. The description and screenshots will make you believe that the game will have some sort of psychological thing where the game changes or things talk to your character, yet all npcs repeat the same 2 or 3 words no matter what your sanity is, so it's nowhere in depth as it seems. lovecraftian apparently means zombies and vampires every 5 tiles with mimics instakilling…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My pc keeps pumping 300 fps into this and i can't change it (tried steam run settings and nvidia drivers). There are performance problems (really?) It gets repetitive really fast and there's little reward for unlocking new things
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's fun. Really unforgiving and irritating starting a game and no matter where you turn there are zombies and vampires. The fact you die so much makes the loading of every game just even more annoying because you just want to get back into the game. I liked it, but I know this game is not for everyone and even my like is mixed with a bitterness. I know I will most likely never get further and the lack of updates or quality of life shows that this game won't be getting any new features or dlc…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →get on sale p fun but with the current content even if you suck it won't take long for you to experience all the game has to offer
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →SPOILERS AHEAD! I don't think I have ever played a turn-based rogue-like quite like this one. The Door in the Woods is one of the most thought provoking games I have ever played. In a nutshell, the game is about the end of the world. Multiple extinction level events have taken place, including the raising of the dead, an alien invasion, and the awakening of an Eldritch God. The Door in the Woods is a nihilistic reminder of the inevitability of death. The earth is left in pieces, and there is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While Door in the Woods does have quite a lot of issues in regards to balancing and 'fairness' (I know its a roguelike, don't @ me), overall the game has the startings of something good. If the game was better balanced, and perhaps didn't punish the player for playing the game, it could be something great. I'd recommend now, but only if your willing to endear some pretty brutal punishments for screwing up.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you're one of those that finds bleak and horrifying experiences enticing, this game is highly recommended.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to like this game, but I can't do it. I am unfamiliar with this genre of game and I expected something very pick-up-and-play, but this game is niche as ♥♥♥♥ and I'm not sure what kind of person it would appeal to. It's erie, and I love the simplicity of the graphics and layout, but the gameplay is not at all fun or engaging. And even though the game is brutally simple in its layout, I still had to search youtube videos to find out how to actually hit any of the in game enemies because…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Even with asci graphics, this game will still scare you. Also the complete lack of Youtube videos makes you have to figure it out yourself. I was floored by how good this game plays. I highly recommend it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i dont think the dev realises that, he can have his short and intense, die at the end, without being lazy and not implementing a save system. truthfully, i would not have refunded this if it was at all able to be saved. load in, die, thats fun. load in, get good progress, bunker up and start to think of a plan to escape this awful place, have to go for irl stuff, cant save, and my pc is a potato, which is why i play ascii games, but i cant save, minimizing will just slow down my computer. do…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A dark and gloomy Lovcraftian setting, and a unique pseudo 3D ASCII graphics. A great roguelike. Recomended!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When I compare this game to Cataclysm Dark Days Ahead, this feels like a large lack of content. There are only 5 scenarios and 5 characters, and everything is locked behind experience that can only be obtained by surviving. In Cataclysm or CDDA, you have 25 scenarios available and 100s of characters to play with crafting and various other things to do. In this game comparatively, you walk around consuming items and waiting for more items to randomly spawn to survive. You can't even break the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Yeah, I don't recommend this game to anyone. :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Narrative-based roguelike: good idea, bad execution. The whole mechanic (as far as I understood it) revolves around gathering "experiences" to unlock stuff, but the scenarios have little glueing them together, the story changes very little between runs of the same scenario, and the game tries to kill you as soon as you're insane and nearing that sweet 100 experiences. And, as I've seen people say, there are free lovecraftian RLs with more depth around, go get them for now. Oh, and the game…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Neat art style, and deeper than it looks at first glance. Similar to Cataclysm, if Cataclysm didn't have three kitchen sinks and a car bolted to the side of it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Out of all the games I bought during the winter sale, this is my favorite.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Me: Maybe I'll give rogue-like games another try. (Nine minutes later) Me: Refund, please.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this is the kind of game where you have to wonder: why am i playing this. its way too hard an unbalanced: you wanna have fun playing and maybe winning the game? you prpably wont. also to few items, crafting and content in general. just mosters that are to strong for you. also you cant outrun them and you cant hide since they also spawn in your vicinity. also u need exp to unlock the other meager content. 50 exp minimum. you get exp from surviving 1 night 1 exp surviving second night 2,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For $12 this is a great game. Love the basic aesthetics. Get dropped off at a helicopter pad. See house. See Dog. Run for house as dog chases me. Barely make it and close the door. Shoot Zombie with only bullet. Scared to go outside through the only door. The dog is waiting. Find old dog food and hope for the best! Open door dog food in hand. Miss-click. Eat dog food and then get eaten by dog. 10/10 would eat dog food again.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →***** Ehh I made an update, I really wish I could give this a middle thumb? like Neutral towards its still uninteresting as a game experience. ***** This game has a lot of faults that I spent more time writing about then playing the game. My first recommendation would be for the creator to keep the engine, take a game design class, take a creative writing class, and come back with updates that: >Convinces players this game is more than just expectations, that this game can be an experience…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've been killed by zombies, vampires, centipedes, dogs. I killed a cannibal with a moltov, but I was inside when I threw it, so the fire spread and killed me. This is a death sim with crafting and scavenging. Oh yeah, I've been killed by mimics as well. MIMICS. Mannequins creeped on me but did not hurt me. Oh Horror also has killed me. Do you like dying very quickly? And beautiful ASCII art? If so, you can't really go wrong with this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I put a .44 round into Yepid, and still it came. Summoned by my madness, and feeding on it, it still came, running faster than I ever could hope to. A thing of eldritch truth, unhindered by the frailties of humanity and dedicated wholly to my death. But even such a creature was no match for the power of high explosives. And I still had a pipe bomb. I could not outrun Yepid, but I could outpace the explosion by just enough. The bomb blew to oblivion, and tore the daemon's body asunder. I…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Door in the woods, is a master piece of a game. Truly capturing the brutality of surviving in a world teeming with eldritch horrors. You need to eat, you need to drink, and you need to try and not go insane. While people might say the graphics are, bad, it really isn't a problem, but there is clever usage of letters, such as z and Z zombies being different, z zombies are much easier to kill, probably because they are, kiddo zombos. Scavenging is a major part of this game, break into houses and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A traditional rougelike with an interesting twist on the ASCII art. If I had to compare the game to others in the same genre it would be Cataclysm Dark Days Ahead, Infra Arcana, and The Slimy Lichmummy. Outside of the direct genre Darkwood, Teleglitch, and Noct. I'd played a previous version of this back in March of this year so it was already on my radar, but the full release just kind of came out of nowhere which was a pleasant surprise and instant purchase for me. Pros: - Captures the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A really creative take on the survival horror genre. The graphic is absolutely minimalistic, yet climatic and well fits together. During playthrough, there are numerous and non-linear options for gear production and survival. The game is, however, really challenging, especially at the beginning. 7/10.
