In 2021, the makers of the indie classic CrossCode got a grant from the German government to fund half of their next game. They thought it'd take ~$1.5 million and 3.5 years. Things didn't go quite as planned. Here's the story behind the follow-up to a masterpiece: www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...

I have such complicated feelings about this game because on a surface level, it ticks all the boxes. Pixel art, action RPG mechanics, deep and engrossing story, compelling skill tree progression, etc. But by the time I was about halfway through, I could not wait for this game to be over. I think CrossCode was made by and for people with more patience and skill than I have, because for all the thought that was put into all the gameplay mechanics, I just found the game more and more infuriating…

The rush for technical fidelity has done more to stifle game development than help. Calling this fidelity "immersion" has done even more damage. CrossCode and Celeste are memorable and tightly designed games. When was the last time you could say that about Call of Duty?

I feel the term "hidden gem" has kinda lost a bit of its meaning over the last couple of years. You see people using the term for games that, sure, are gems, but are certainly not hidden. One of the big offenders of this that comes to mind for me is Celeste. Sure, the game is an extremely well crafted experience, but I would hardly call it "hidden". That being said, I feel CrossCode is an amazing example of a hidden gem. I discovered this one after I was recommended the demo for this team's…

Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this game. I think this game has more positive reviews than it deserves, and the reason why is simple. Players want to like this game. It does a lot of things right. The devs clearly put a lot of time and effort into the game, and it is pretty unique. However, the game has several flaws made it too frustrating to continue. I probably got about 40% of the way through the game. There are some great moments, but there are long periods of frustration and gratuitous…

I've been playing videogames for 30 years and I've seen plenty of games made with great care and passion. There are at least two reasons for which I disliked the game and thought of dropping it about every day I’ve bothered to plod through it. First, it’s really not an RPG. Numbers go up, sure, but all the rewards become negligible and all the quests are a waste of time to complete when you move to the next area. Nothing scales that well and the best way to improve your character is just to advance the plot line – you’ll gain about five levels’ worth of experience from just beating random new…
