Chrono Trigger is a 1995 role-playing video game developed and published by Square for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It is the first installment of the Chrono series. The game's plot follows a group of adventurers who travel through time to prevent a global catastrophe. The game's development team included three designers that Square dubbed the "Dream Team": Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of Square's Final… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

unlabelledView post →I completely recommend you play Chrono Trigger. You should play it elsewhere. This PC port gets randomly locked to 15fps 10% of the time after cutscenes, and no amount of DLL tweaking or gamescope or Nvidia control panel changes has fixed it. The game was abandoned in 2023, and will never receive another fix. If you play this version, there is a chance you will need to restart the game every 30 minutes to keep playing. Chrono Trigger was so good that I kept coming back through the stuttering…

unlabelledView post →Would I recommend Chrono Trigger to other players? Chrono Trigger should be mandatory gaming for everyone. They should make you play it in the fourth grade as part of general studies. It is one of the greatest games of all time.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Regret not listening to the negative reviews about game crashing hard. 5 hours in and now the game doesnt even boot up. multiple reinstall, adjusting steam overlay setting, controller, graphics, boot up as win 10 mode, verify files all failed to work anymore. and steam refuses to refund because its over 2 hours.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →NOT RECOMMENDED Review Title: Masterpiece game trapped in an absolute trash fire of a PC port. I am completely done with this ♥♥♥♥. Chrono Trigger is arguably one of the greatest JRPGs ever made, but Square Enix should be utterly ashamed of this broken, lazy Steam port. I have spent the last several hours fighting the game itself rather than the actual monsters. The collision detection and pathfinding scripts in this version are fundamentally broken. I ran into game-breaking invisible walls…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Chrono Trigger on the SNES is an absolute masterpiece. Play that version, not this one, because it’s a crash-happy mess. The “enhanced” graphics look awful, but if you play on original/classic graphics mode, sometimes the backgrounds don’t load, leaving a sprite floating in a void. Terrible, terrible port. Save your money.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best J-RPGs of all time. I’d say this is the definitive way to play Chrono Trigger now. This Steam version includes the added content from the DS version, the PS1 cutscenes, QoL improvements, better translation, etc. This is the original game, no remake/remaster stuff going on, just a good port. Played through this version in entirety, it works nice, didn't have a single problem. All the growing pains from when it released are gone. It's become really stable and reliable. Can also…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Disappointing and frustrating, but not for the reasons most would cite. I know that most critics of this port focus on bugs, crashes, and other technical bits, and those are important. But my criticisms stem from the fact they couldn't get certain artistic aspects right, and it ruins the game for me. It's difficult to even get past the intro and into the game proper. It's obvious that whoever was tasked with handling this port couldn't be bothered to pay attention to the details. It makes…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm kinda tired of Squenix putting out broken trash of fantastic games on Steam. Actual Chrono Trigger I can't recommend enough, it's a fantastic game, but Squenix just doesn't give a singular ♥♥♥♥ about their broken ports to PC. Feels like I'm troubleshooting a DOS-game to make it play on the right monitor, not crash etc.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Why did i wait 25 - 30 years to play this game ....... now one of my favourite games of all time , just amazing And the music, just wow
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Within 90 minutes, the game crashed seven (7) times. Square put out a horrendous port for one of their most beloved games, but luckily this encouraged me to just emulate it lol. The game itself is fantastic and one of the best games ever made so you definitely should play/emulate the SNES or DS versions.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game that didn't age at all I want to be clear on why the game is legendary: 1. Games are not like books, movies or music. Games depend on technology available at the time they were created. Playing Pong nowadays will be not that fun because...well, it's old. But Pong once was a great deal. Chrono Trigger, on the other hand, is already more than 30 years old, it was made with a ton of limitations. But in 2026 this feels great: the plot is great, the graphics are nice (just retro, of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is 30 years old and brings shame to so many games made since. Outstanding pacing. If it were longer, I think it wouldn't hold up so well.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game, terrible port. Just emulate it. Expanding on that, this port is frequently prone to crashing for no reason whatsoever, entering a new scene or entering a fight can cause a crash and it happens incredibly often, Square Enix has the gaul to even dare port a game they weren't even behind and still mess it up this bad. What an insult, Square and the talents behind this game deserve their work to be given more respect. But outside of the issues this port presents, it is still another…

unlabelledView post →Wow, this game needs a legit remake. For such an old game, it was beyond its time and is even enjoyable to this day. Also, the music is amazing! Give it a shot if you're an RPG fan and don't mind that it is obviously old and not as modern as RPGs these days.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's just as good as I remember playing back in PS1 era on my old CRT screen. Funny enough, one of my childhood friend mocked me "Why are you playing children's games?" (When I was fighting Black Tyrano) while there are MANLY games like Resident Evil 3, Tekken 3 etc. The game is still perfect, literally the timeless RPG.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am not surprised why many people call it a cult classic and a must play for any jrpg fan. I was very sceptical as to if I will enjoy the experience because the game is obviously old and I wasn't so sure if gameplay mechanics won't feel too archaic for today's world but I'm happy to announce it's all good. Matter of fact I liked the design more than the old final fantasy games. I like the battle system that is easy to understand, I like the fact the game is surprisingly streamlined for an…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →100% completion — all endings achieved, level 99 across the board, and I’d do it all again in a heartbeat. After countless journeys through every era, every ending, and every challenge, I can say it without hesitation — Chrono Trigger is one of the greatest RPGs ever made. The story, the music, the heart — they still hit just as hard decades later. Each character shines, each choice matters, and every secret feels like a treasure waiting to be found. I’ve travelled time itself and still wish…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Chrono Trigger is one of the greatest games ever created. Every aspect of this game has been crafted with the utmost care and precision. The art, done by the legendary Akira Toriyama, is amazing and it lends a lot of personality to the world and its characters. The soundtrack is impeccable and hits all of the right beats, emotional and otherwise. The story is incredibly well-paced and well-written. The combat is the right mixture of classic JRPG and real-time action. Unfortunately, the game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Have barely any hours in game on the PC port here at the time I'm writing this, but that is sure to change. Chrono Trigger is an amazing JRPG with amazing implementation of a time-travel mechanic, which as overdone as it is today, still holds up quite well. You can see how your actions in each part of the timeline affects the future, and they took a really interesting approach to getting some of the best items in the game, such as the way you get the rainbow shell for the best equipment in the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can see why this is an all-time classic. It was absolutely a masterpiece... aside from one side-quest line, some issues with the port, and some creature-comforts missing. So let me start with the negatives, actually, to get that out of the way. - While for the most part the game has absolutely perfect pacing, when you get close to the finish line (no spoilers), it can slip depending on your choices. You get some extra side-quests to do, if you want. Most of them are good and fun. But there…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Crashes. All. The. Time. One of the greatest games of all time, but prepare for frustration here. Save every single chance you get. Save before going into ANY building. Save leaving any building. Just remember to save. The Lost Sanctum was the single most boring added content I've ever played. Never made it to the Dimnensonal Vortex because of all the crashes. Crashed in the middle of the ending switching to an FMV, so I got to play the entire final battle and ending again. Frustrating beyond…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've been regaining some cognitive tolerance lately, so I'm tipping my toes into "proper" gaming again. I did a bit of research which games might be suitable (not too much cognitive load or focus, still fun and engaging) and ended up with #ChronoTrigger. It might be the most praised SNES games that I have never played so far. Due to its production history, it also looks similar to a beloved classic of mine: #SecretOfMana. So far it's quite promising. :) #VideoGames #Gaming #SNES #RetroGaming
unlabelledView post →Now that I’ve finally played through Chrono Trigger, I can clearly see how many other games I’ve played where the developers’ whole thesis was just “make Chrono Trigger again.” I’m about 30 years late to the party, but I had a great time playing and I loved seeing how this one game built on existing mechanics and shaped decades of RPGs to come. Square Enix took the best of what they already had and made it sparkle. The talents behind Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest came together to write a new…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Apex game. Looks much better that the screenshots suggest and never crashed for me personally. Acheivements percents are low primarily because, for whatever reason, they made them exclusively for all the endings. All but the main one are done in new game plus (although they're really fun) RIP Akira Toriyama
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game, not so great port. Crashed a lot, but luckily it has a nice auto save.. So I guess it really depends on if you're a glass half full kinda person. "Well I beat the boss and the game crashed." vs "Well I beat the boss and the game crashed, luckily I can jump back just before the fight instead of the last save point." I personally thought it was annoying af.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →beat it once. if you feel like it at the moment, beat it again then come back a few years later and beat it again then just for measure do it a dozen more times it never gets old. don't wait for a remake, this game is already perfect as it is
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As of now, with many QoL patches it got, it's a great option to play an all-times classic. Works flawlessly on Deck and probably on any low-end or old PC too. Recommended.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The high-water mark for narrative momentum and mechanical elegance. What is it? The definitive 16-bit JRPG. Born from a "Dream Team" collaboration, it’s a time-travel epic designed to solve the friction of its era. It isn't just a classic; it’s a deliberate rejection of the 80-hour grind, intended to be a dense, high-impact experience that respects the player's time. Who is it for? Tactical Strategists who value synergistic party builds. Narrative Purists looking for consequence-driven…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To clarify, I highly recommend this game. I do not however recommend this port on Steam. It is very buggy, resulting in a lot of crashes. 14hrs in and I've had the game crash about as many times. Occasionally sound just decides not to work necessitating the reboot of the game. The HD resolution vs the original doesn't change much. The terrain/background seems to have a hard time keeping up with you if you run. Fun game, play it on the DS.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a hard thumbs down from me unfortunatelly. As solid as the game is the Steam port consistently crashes and so I cant reccomend this version. Its one that I was super excited to play but with all the crashing issues its just not playable in its current state. Will update my review down the line if SE ever patches but for the time being its unfortunatelly a DNF after over 7h of trying to play the game with a multitude of crashes too frequent to forgive.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Goated game. I saw a lot of people complaining about frequent crashes however my experience on linux was great with 0 crashes. So if you are playing on linux go for it and if you are on windows maybe emulate it instead idk the game itself is great
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best RPGs ever made. This is required playing for people who call themselves RPG fans. You already know why. It's AWESOME and as a Brit I'm glad I finally played it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So, I just finished Chrono Trigger. Steam version, slightly modded so I could have the PS5 controller icons and the SNES text which is much better, looks better and is way easier to read than the one Square Enix uses in the Steam Version while retaining that retro console gameplay feeling. Terrific old school turn based JRPG with: - great story, - fantastic characters, - meaningful and emotional dialogues, - amazing unexpectedly extended world, - captivating and melodious music tracks, -…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Welp, that's Chrono Trigger that's for sure On sales you're getting one of the best jrpgs ever made for really cheap It's a port of the ds version, with high quality for the anime cutscenes (And I think higher quality music), but without the bestiary (which imo kinda sucks, I like checking out bestiaries in rpgs) Apparently there was some issues and crashes before, but I believe most of them have been patched, haven't encountered a single crash or softlock when playing so I guess most of them…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I usually get put off by people praising older games since I feel like its purely based off nostalgia, but this game was actually quite good. I'll put a disclaimer and say the game's age def shows in some parts of the actual map design. It can feel extremely confusing where to go next because the actual map art doesn't make certain pathways immediately obvious. I had to use a guide early on to really navigate around. Some bad things: 1. The story isn't INSANELY unique, its a typical story of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Chrono Trigger Everyone can agree - this is possibly the greatest JRPG of all time. But my experience with this PC port was not so great... ● Needs mods to improve the game and get it to a playable state. I Recommend Chrono Trigger Pixel Demaster, SNES Overworld Sprites, Transparent Portraits and Improved Icons. Plus, CT.ext to remove the filtering effect and fix the movement stutter. ● Many items, names, weapons and techs are re-named. Along with some entirely re-written scenes. This…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →how would you write a review for Mario 64? For Ocarina of Time? For Coca-Cola? For DOOM? CHRONO TRIGGER is that type of game, where most games are derivative of it. That being said u gotta be willing to deal with some old game nonsense(TM) if playing in the modern age
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played for the first time in 2025 and it holds up extremely well, despite its age. It's easy to see how and why it has inspired countless games. The story is simple, but effective, filled with memorable characters. It's paced extremely well and moves along nicely. I never felt frustrated because I didn't know where I needed to go or what to do. The variation in the story, events and how you can manipulate what happens, is incredible and I definitely understand why the game is celebrated as…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty crazy how this port keeps crashing in the same way on 3 completely different PCs. You'll get a smoother experience on an emulator. The game itself is phenomenal though.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can only say great things about this game. The music and art are so pretty. The story is brilliant along with the many expansive side quests which provide so many ends to explore. Those are complimented by the cast of characters which are all really unique but fit together so well. Switching between the cast during long hauls without saves feels really good. I do think a lot of the game is quite easy but I still had fun every part of the game. So much of my 30 hour save was spent exploring…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game has a song that i couldnt find for around 5 years, so the game has that satisfaction for me now the game is really good too the song is '600 ad', also
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The PC Steam Port has been fixed for a long time, and is arguably the definitive way to play Chrono Trigger unless you have nostalgia for playing on the original SNES version.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I do not think any video game is perfect, but Chrono Trigger is as close as it gets.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's honestly more than peak. In fact, I have no words to describe how fond I actually am of this, and "peak" isn't doing it justice in the slightest. So even if I know it's not enough, I hope my admiration makes up for it. On a real note, it is seriously an amazing game and I can clearly see the inspiration it left in every single game after it and I'm not even remotely glazing. I wasn't left with the feeling of "Oh, how innovative!", I was left with the feeling of "I've seen this…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →everything from the music, story, and graphics still hold up to this day. it was a very enjoyable experience. there's not much difficulty but its still fun nonetheless. all of the music slaps!!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This review is being written from the perspective of an old man who doesn't like JRPGs, RPGs, anime faffing about (for the most part), or Square Enix (for the most part.) I've also never played Chrono Cross and never will. With all of that out of the way, Chrono Trigger is a perfect game, a perfect encapsulation of absolute best of the 16-bit era, and the only JRPG I've cared for enough to finish (the Nintendo DS version, specifically.) Chrono Trigger is just a breath of fresh air on every…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A classic for a reason. I could reiterate all of the positives you'll find elsewhere in these reviews, buuut that sounds awfully boring for a game this old and this well-loved. I'd like to instead add that: 1) I have not experienced any of the bugs mentioned in some of these negative reviews, and that's across 46.2 hours of gameplay, obtaining all of the endings along the way. The game opens and runs perfectly smoothly on my PC 2) Playing with default mouse and keyboard controls can…
