Chaos Reborn
Developer Snapshot Games Inc.
Chaos Reborn is a turn-based tactical role-playing game developed by Snapshot Games and was part funded through a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. Following an early access release in December 2014, the full game was released in October 2015. The game is a remake of Gollop's 1985 game Chaos: The Battle of Wizards. The remake includes a number of improvements over the original version including a role-playing meta… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

That said, the game's central concept proved to be a failure for many. I found it tolerable, and the game itself interesting, but was pleased to find the option to disable added. That said, there are too many quality-of-life problems with this game for me to recommend it to anyone other than diehard strategy fans, and among them I would only recommend…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's difficult to make a turn-based game that allows for quick matches -- particularly one that can have many units. Games like Civ and Heroes collapse under the weight of their units, with the result being that it's nearly impossible to play them in multiplayer unless you have a friend who's available for a block of 3+ hours. And here's the thing -- if you're not playing against real people, you're not playing a strategy game. Instead, you're playing a puzzle game called 'exploit the AI'.…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love turn-based strategy games and risk-mitigation mechanics, but this game is just way too random. No matter how well you plan, if you get a couple of unlucky rolls and your opponent gets a couple of lucky ones, it's game over. If a novice can beat a master because of lucky rolls, it's too close to Candyland for my tastes. Sorry, I wanted to like this one, but couldn't.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is dead, community is dead, and I don't believe there will be any more support for the game in the future. BUT, this is a little gem of a game and I greatly enjoy it, even as someone who doesn't like percent based combat. It feels strategical enough not to make it feel like a gamble to win in the slightest. There's also "law mode" which removes all randomness and make everything health based. So there's that if the percent based combat turns you off. 7/10 alone 8/10 with friends…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Linux version of the game does not work out of the box (black screen with no video, only audio). The developers are aware of it since 2017 but never actually bothered to fix it. There are supposedly ways around it to fix it (or just using Proton), but you shouldn't have to do that if the game claims to have Linux support.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Chaos Reborn is one of those games that have me wish i could have an evaluation between recommended and not recommended. Don't get me wrong, the game is very well made technically. 3D Models are amazing, as VFX and animations are. Pretty nice spells, summons are great, enemies are not too dumb. That's it. Tactically it's very very basic. That's it. Units can move and attack. They do lack special abilities, special attacks and above all, an overwatch mode. The wizard is the only one that through…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Massive potential but too much of a Rock/Paper/Scissors dynamic. Had a game vs. a real opponent who turned himself undead and flying, then I had nowhere NEAR enough undead or magic to deal with it. Very bad play experience. I know that by modifying equipment this can be mitigated or possibly even negated, but then you'd get countered by something else. Games should be based on skill, not the luck of the match-up... It's too bad because everything else about the game is very cool. The devs…

I also really like indies, so here you go: - *The Hex* - in the "deep discount" section; I liked the dev's other two games (*Pony Island* and *Inscryption*), so I'll probably enjoy this one; they're all on sale too - *Firewatch* - *Celeste* - *Gris* - *Filament* - *Chaos Reborn* These are all <$5. And some other games I might get if I finish an in-progress game: - *Psychonauts 2* - *Hogwarts Legacy* - *Bomb Rush Cyberpunk* -…

unlabelledView post →I took a real sharp turn on this one. For my first 5 hours of play, I was mentally writing my positive review for this game. There are some really cool game design elements being tried here. The cat and mouse element of being able to cast your spells cheaply as illusion at the risk of having them dispelled just as cheaply and easily by your opponent if he thinks you are pulling a fast one is an amazing idea and makes for some fun matches. It's like Magic the gathering meets the card game Bull…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It seems like an OK game for what it is, but it didn't really do much to keep me interested from the beginning. Also, like 90% of the achievements are based on multiplayer criteria, which is disappointing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I got this game because it sounded fun and offered a single-player campaign of sorts. The game was really fun at first, but the game has massive, glaring flaws that are just repulsive. Undead creatures are basically unkillable since your starting deck is random, and the respawn system in the single player is just abysmal. If you lose a single fight, you have to start all over from the beginning of that campaign with none of the allies you made, even ones you just got from a story event before…

Chaos, a turn-based strategy game of summoning beasts and casting spells to outwit and destroy the other wizards of this battle arena. The game is a classic having garners some great re-makes:…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game goes under the radar for a lot of people, but it really shouldn't. This is an excellent game with some of the best artwork I've ever seen in a video game. Many would say this game is Easy to Learn, Hard to Master. I would agree with that, but in the meantime it's a whole lot of fun trying to find your way through the realms. Not a big multiplayer fan, however I understand finding matches can be difficult. The Singleplayer campaign is a good time. Try this game, the card/strategy…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Underwhelming campaign, and the multiplayer is somehow much less fun than in the beta (and dead currently). Maybe it's the meta progression, maybe visual style changes, I'm not sure what but the prototype was a lot of fun and this is not fun. Shame, it had great potential and I miss the prototype multiplayer.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is my favorite game I've played in 50 years. I love it! Has a learning curve, but once you do, you can play it everyday and enjoy it the more you play it. I've played 505 hours as of right now.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I haven't ever played this game but I purchased it in part to support the great work that Julian Gollop was doing with Phoenix Point. Then he betrays us all by taking an EPIC game exclusive. Absolute disgrace!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Looks pretty, but slower and more frustrating than the original, stats don't really seem to mean much since the RNG overwhelmingly determines success, play the Spectrum original; It's better.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Chaos Reborn is a very accessible strategy game. It will take you just half an hour to learn all of its secrets. Thanks to simple rules, a turn lasts just a few seconds, and the entire session usually ends in 10 minutes or less. But you will be glued to this game for hours. You can hire mercenaries into slots which appear at the bottom of your screen and open up as the level progresses. It doesn't make it massively clear when that limit increases, so keep checking. Having a numerical advantage…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To difficult with no possibility to change difficult level. Even Tutorial you can fail easily. I tried to defeat the wizzard in the second citadel in the solo player campaign. I tried it for two hours and i failed over and over again. This is no fun. Also once you create your wizzard it cant be changed anymore, This is really dumb. No hint it will be permanent. This game was a waste of money and time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Truly depressed by this game. I've played Gollop brother's games since the original Laser Squad game on the spectrum and pretty much everything else they've done and this is a huge disappointment. I don't know if they were trying to be more creative with all of the fashionable mechanics or it was a cynical marketing ploy. Either way it's a godawful mess. It seems like, at every conceivable point in the design process, the decision was made to de-emphasise strategy in favour of luck. As a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'll say up front - I got this game for $1. I'm really enjoying it so far. I was really surprised by the amount of negative reviews, but a lot of them are perhaps complaining about Chaos mode (which seems like it was the only launch option to play the game). I'd probably hate this game, too, if the strategy part got trumped by bad RNG. I've seen other reviews complain about the tutorial being too hard. I am really enjoying the tutorials and extra challenges so far! I'd rather get punished…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →singleplayer feels unfinished and multiplayer is dead.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not great, if I'm honest. There are a bunch of flawed mechanics that initially sound fine, but ultimately don't work out. The line of sight mechanic, which prevents you from targeting anything out of line of sight with a direct spell, results in favouring numbers of creatures over anything else. You'll want to surround your wizard with anything, it doesn't really matter. This doesn't really lead to chess-style battles with varied monsters, just annoying "how can I prevent my wizard from being…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Chaos Reborn is not a very fun game. One of the things that caught my eye immediately when I played this game is that the developer is an evangelizing atheist. Usually subtleties are tolerable, but when you write a video game to act as your interactive sermon, it just gets lame really quick. It does make you wonder why atheists are so hooked on polytheism and evolutionism for their fiction, though. That said, the gameplay of Chaos Reborn is clunky and poorly done, in my opinion. You play…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →man... what a shame. this game looks cool and I think there is some genuinely good game play here. But every single thing and tiny step of the game is so unintuitive. The menus are horrible. There are buttons that say "info" everywhere that show you just the same stats in a bit of a bigger font. But where is all the additional info like special attacks, health bars, etc. etc. etc. ? I'm not saying every hexagonal game has to be Heroes of Might an Magic, but this just feels unnecessarily…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Guess I am late to the review here, as I bought this game day one. You see, the original was my most played games ever, I was obsessed with it. This version is (for me) a gaming masterpiece, it retains everything that made the original so addictive, but adds so much more. I still play to this day. It's my desert island game. Gollop is a gaming genius.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I will not describe the gameplay in this review as the voted as most helpful review (https://steamcommunity.com/id/tmwarwolf/recommended/319050/), does a beautiful job of that, that I won't be able to top. I just want to add something. While enjoyable in single player, the bread and butter of this game is in its multi-player modes. That's the reason I will advise anybody, after getting themselves familiar with the mechanics to jump into multiplayer. Being a small indie game, released some time…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is crap. You'd expect more from those that made X-com. No option to save. This causes you to start from whatever hell you were killed at. To much repetetion since there's no saving. Can't take on someone higher than you, you get owned and then the same crap starts again. And don't tell me, "you just don't know how to play", you can play with my balls moron. Don't waste your money on this crap.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very primitive game. Few creatures, very imbalanced, limited strategies. Overall maybe a couple hours of fun.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It’s pure RNG. There is no skill involved at all. The description in the store tagging it as strategy and tactics based is…misleading to say the least. You have to replay the scenarios until you get lucky. Waste of time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Julian Gollop is such a brilliant game designer. Before the X-Com series, he made Chaos, Rebelstar, Laser Squad, and Lords of Chaos on the Spectrum. Absolutely amazing games, all of them. Recently, he made Chaos Reborn, which is a great game, and Phoenix Point, which I haven't actually played yet.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Chaos Reborn is a mobile app that's been dumped on Steam as if it was a real PC game (it's not)... it's a cash grab from greedy mobile devs. It's a fantasy themed turn based strategy game/cardgame hybrid (combat revolves very much around RNG and cards rather than planning, strategy and, you know, tactics). And that's where it really all falls down. There's a large audience for quality turn based strategy games on Steam (and strategy games in general, look at Starcraft, Total War, X-Com.. the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Chaos Reborn is a challenging, balanced, competitive multiplayer chess game that is lots of fun. I've largely played 1v1 games and they were real nail biters sometimes.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A somewhat HoMM-like game mixing hex turn-based tactical combat (summoning creatures/spells from a deck of actions) with an overworld with resource collection and capture points. There is single and multiplayer and selectable rule sets for varying amounts of RNG (law and chaos mode). The single player campaign seems to be partly offline and partly online-only. The offline campaign begins with a 10-chapter intro story and then 5 campaign levels. However, the campaign levels are pretty much…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think this is a great strategy game about positioning and tactic overall. The main complain of public to this game was randomness of hit and summon but what I found out during my play is that game is still interesting to play around positioning and different monsters types counter eatch other. Like there is undead that can only be hurt by magic and higher positions gives you higher chance to hit. There are different maps that put you into different kind of situations like you can create…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cute little idea in theory with mixing a more traditional turn-based strategy game with elements of poker, but in practice I got bored incredibly fast. The game does not seem to offer easy access to your spells - cards in the single player campaign thus trying to learn the game turned into a exercise of trial and error. And speaking of frustration, your PC dies incredibly fast. So much so that higher enemies can potentially 1 hit you and even the lower lvl ones get you in 2-3 hits if you make…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For us us gamers of the Spectrum generation - Its Chaos...get it and love it. Though I admit I got my copy of the original copy of chaos on a free cassette glued to the front of a copy of a Your Sinclair magazine. For those younger, its 4-D chess with magical monsters...enjoy. Would 100% disbelieve your Golden Dragon again.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wizard Chess! 10 years after release, people are still playing this game. I found it recently and I'm having a blast. Tricky, with some OP moves (looking at you gooey blob and magic bolt), and once one player starts winning it can be hard to catch them. But evenly matched games that go back-and-forth are exciting and fantastically fun, for me. There's even a league! Still active~~
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →me and mt friend have been binging this game together and oh my god we have a blast
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I actually like the concept. Story is reading, which gives depth if you like books and doesn't if you'd rather watch TV. I prefer order and balance because chaos is too RNG to be sensible to me, yet I find myself still losing to them.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Chaos Reborn, it's like a wild love affair between a card game and a war strategy, according to me, and I know a thing or two about good decisions; just ask Sid Meier. Picture wizards throwing down dangerous creatures and hurling spells in a gaming world, pretty standard stuff, right? But Chaos Reborn spices it up with three special somethings. It's like playing poker with magic. The game throws curveballs with random numbers, so managing risks becomes your game plan. Sure, summoning a grand…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Reminds me of the old ZX Spectrum game, which was my favorite at that times.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Chaos Reborn is a combination card game and tactical war game. There are some RNG push your luck elements. The game does a good job of slowly introducing you to elements until you get what a full game is supposed to look like and then lets you loose in a variety of game modes. I have returned to this game multiple times over the last few years and have never been able to get into it. The gameplay just never got fun. Apparantly this is a sequel/remake to a game from the 80s which explains a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Shame there's so little players in here. It's a really good ccg-turn-based-strategy game! Sure it's kinda limited, you soon know all the cards, but the builds are what's fun and playing duels and trying more decks and builds :D
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cant really recommend it simply because it runs at 24 fps on a high end system (RTX 2080, 16GB DDR4 RAM, Ryzen 2700X). It doesnt seem to be locked/capped by anything, but its hard to tell since the game doesnt feature any graphic options menu to speak of. The only available options is the resolution and viewmode (fullscreen or windowed) coupled with Vsync (turned off). That means it runs at 24 and i dont have any tools to find out what the reason for that is. The game itself is ok-ish if you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a solid game, with great mechanics and the developer did a good job fleshing out several nice additions like getting better equipment and battling through realms even with or without friends. Plan and simple this game is fun even addictive and will not disappoint because it does not over shot in any way; and instead hits it mark.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A turn-based strategy game from the makers of Xcom? I should love this, right? It is indeed a well-made game and it looks good and plays nicely, but somehow it bounced off me. It just didn't have the intrigue and style of Xcom. I will give it a thumbs-up because it's a quality game but I just couldn't get into it. The troops your wizard conjures are pretty faceless and the game lacks that special formula of unit customization and gear management that made Xcom so relatable to the player.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Disclaimer : most negative reviews and overall criticism about this game is towards an older version of the game, which featured a heavy gambit-focused gameplay. I played the other gamemode available, where summonings and attacks can't fail, and I had a blast. Great gameplay ! I only wish it was designed for solo play more. The campaign tries but falls short of being entertaining. It's an awesome strategy game for only 10 bucks !
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love this game and the uncertainty aspect of it. Big cons are the near-dead playerbase and not very engaging single player mode. Definitely recommend only if you have friends to play with.
