Castlevania is a video game series created and published by Konami. The series debuted in Japan on September 26, 1986, with Akumajō Dracula (悪魔城ドラキュラ, Akumajō Dorakyura; lit. "Demon Castle Dracula"), which was later released as Castlevania in the United States (May 1, 1987) and PAL (December 19, 1988). Titles in the series have been released on numerous video game consoles, handheld game consoles, and personal… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

I never got around to playing the DS Castlevania games since I never owned a DS, and the emulators aren't the best experience because of its awkward portrait mode and touch controls. Recently though, I picked up the Castlevania Dominus Collection on my Switch and wanted to gush about it a little. Order of Ecclesia is *fantastic*. Almost 20 years later, it aged…

unlabelledView post →A collection of some of the absolute best games in the series. Every single game here is absolutely fantastic and they are all great in different ways. So let's break them down. Dawn of Sorrow: Out of this collection, and generally, this is one of the weaker Igavanias, I would honestly only consider it better than Circle of the Moon. The main reason for this is that it's basically an exact repeat of Aria of Sorrow but worse. Story? Less interesting. Level design? Significantly worse to the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is really probably the best set of Castlevania games out there- while they were originally made for the Nintendo DS, that doesn't translate to them using the touchscreen gimmick much or at all. The developers instead focused on making really addictive and crazy action RPGs that have a ton of variety and layers to the game play. By layers I mean you can play these games casually at the start, but then the difficulty scales up as you attempt the game's harder challenges. There's no…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you like metroidvanias - stop reading reviews and just buy the collection now! Great collection and nice extras bundled in. A really good way to experience these games without needing original hardware and pirating them. Clearly some love went into this and is worth buying/playing the collection over emulating. It is kind of crazy they can have all the GBA and DS remasters but still no SOTN.

unlabelledView post →The Castlevania Dominus Collection continues on Konami's actually commendable video game preservation methods, while providing great emulation features. Even if Konami just shovels all the work off to M2, who has been doing an amazing job at recreating or servicing these old, important Castlevania games. The Dominus Collection has great built-in rewind, save states, etc. for cheesing to your heart's content. Dawn of Sorrow, sequel to Aria of Sorrow, is the first game chronologically of this…

I'm deeply grateful that Castlevania has accompanied me through every significant phase of my life. The NDS trilogy was co-created by two members of the “Golden Iron Triangle”: IGA as game producer and Michiru Yamane as music…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Incredible trilogy of imo the best Igavania games outside of SotN. Also includes an arcade port of the original Haunted Castle and a gorgeous remake called "Haunted Castle Revisited". If you had any concerns at all about how the DS ports would translate to PC, then you can drop them, as imo everything was handled perfectly. For example, the sigil drawing in Dawn of Sorrow has been changed to a quick time event, which I find to be MUCH better than how it originally worked on the DS. Also, the…

unlabelledView post →Don't get me wrong, the games are absolutely great. Some of the best ever made, even. But this is a very cheap and barebones port. The games have no control rebinding for keyboard, no graphical options, no options for the layout of the multiple screens, and it even defaults to bordered window mode at a ridiculous 1284x701 resolution. And there are NO graphical options, so you have to edit a config file to even get it to run in fullscreen at your chosen resolution (look up the community guide).…

Now I'm begging for a release with Lament of Innocence + Curse of Darkness + Symphony of the Night Ok, these are the three Castlevania DS games. Not wildly different from each other, but there's still a huge ground to cover, so I'll try to be as brief and effective as possible. I played the games in chronological order, starting from Castlevania DoS (which reads like "Castlevania DS") and ending with OoE. Before delving into each one, I'll say upfront what would normally…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Peak finally escaped the Nintendo DS prison. There's your review. Not only are they all great (Portrait of Ruin and Dawn of Sorrow being my favorites), but this collection is great too. I like the image gallery for the three games. It was great to see the original images that got compressed to become the portraits in-game. That and the little japanese comics. I just wish the in-game bestiaries were also here so that I can thumb through them as well. This collection also comes with…

Previously DS exclusive games, the collection contains Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin and Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia. unlabelledView post →First off, massive props for 'porting' these 20+ year old games to modern systems so that we may enjoy them. We need more of this. The negative review is because I cannot split the screens between a multi-monitor setup like I can with melonDS (where I can open a secondary and third window to my liking). This collection forces you to show all 2/3 screens on one main screen without any other options. So the entire playthrough you're looking at only 2/3 of your screen where 99% of the action will…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Old Gems, New Enlightenment Metroidvania has been my favorite sub-genre of games for many years. Even since my first experience with Hollow Knight back in June 2017, I've been lost in the rabbit hole of this particular type of action platformer. Yet when I look back, I realize that I have never played any games from the Metroid series and the Castlevania series. I may know some references metroidvanias are inspired by thanks to the internet. I never experience them myself. So, in preparation…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, and Order of Ecclesia are the best 2D "Igavania" Castlevania games ever made; nothing else comes close. Each game has an identity of its own and plays differently enough to offer a fresh gameplay experience. The soundtracks are amazing. The games run exceptionally well, much better than on any emulator. Castlevania Dominus Collection offers incredible value for a relatively low price. For the rest of my life, whenever I am in the mood for 2D Castlevania, I…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →All 3 games are classics and hold up very well, with various strengths and weaknesses between them. But what all 3 share is having lots of fun equipment and abilities to experiment with, plus lots of interesting enemies and bosses to fight. Bring SOTN to Steam!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →6:02 PM I beat Haunted Castle! M2 was gracious enough to add infinite continues to this game in Castlevania Dominus Collection. That being said, the game is rather shallow and poorly thought through with some of its challenges like the fast elevator and the bridge. At least the music kicks ass.

unlabelledView post →Castlevania might be my favorite videogame franchise, or at the very least a top 3. It delights me that the games are preserved in these wonderful collection ports, and I only wish more companies would do the same. That being said, the games in this particular collection are products of their time, and it shows. The only Castlevania games I disliked before these are Kid Dracula, the gameboy games, and Circle of the Moon... the only mainline game in that list being Circle, which is famously…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Definitely a great collection of games. The graphics are much easier on the eyes than the Advance Collection and it has the same quality of life features. There's save states, a rewind feature, a version selection, so you're not stuck playing the NA versions, if you prefer the JPN or EU ones... not that I know the difference... I just stuck with the base ones. More of the same really, just enter a room, kill enemies, repeat until the thing you want drops... collect everything... look the…

This is a good collection of pretty good "Metroidvania" Castlevania games, cleverly called the DominuS collection after a major part of one of the games and (more importantly) to avoid being sued by the true Lord of Darkness that created the dual-screen, touch-control handheld console these games were originally on. It also…
