Back in 1980 (four years before even I was born!), Atari released an arcade game called *Battlezone* that was one of the original popular FPS games. It looked like this: Almost 2 decades later, in 1998, Activision published their own version of the game, also called *Battlezone*. This was…

unlabelledView post →My perspective on Battlezone 98 is hopelessly biased. I've been playing it since 1998, which means I've spent nearly three decades coming back to the same game. At this point, it feels less like a title I've played and more like a place I've visited repeatedly throughout my life. Even so, I think Battlezone remains one of the most interesting strategy games ever made. Its central idea was remarkably bold: combine a first-person combat game with a real-time strategy game, then force the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've been playing this game since I was a child. It is a hidden gem from the 90's and early 00's. In my humble opinion, it is the best combination of FPS and RTS I've ever played.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am 67 and have loved this game since the original release.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Battlezone (1998) - Shell (title screen theme). So hi, I'm from Europe. When this game came out, I was a teenager and I was like "oh based on what I've heard, I guess this is what all American military music sounds like". Damn, I need to figure out how to replay the game, it still sits on my shelf on place of honour. (...is "Battlezone '98 Redux" substantially different? I appear to have it on GOG) I remember being a little bit sour at this game, because I was *so* psyched up about game…
unlabelledView post →I have played some missions of the original Battlezone, decided to come back to complete the game. The AI is broken, vehicles get stuck in buildings and eventually explode being unable to get out (e.g. while getting repairs in NSDF Hangar). Scavengers cannot pass through series of Gun Towers, despite me being able to pass through (invisible colliders?). If you select a group (e.g. Offense) and the group changes (a vehicle is built or destroyed), the context menu resets to group selection.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I had owned the game, but now I don't. I don't remember why or how. It might have been because I was not good enough to beat the first level, which I don't recall being a problem in the pre-steam days. I am recommending entirely based on the fun I had with the original, and in the hopes that my failures are my own.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Despite Steam's warning to the contrary, this game runs fine on 64-bit Macs, including Apple Silicon (M-series).
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Such a good game and a classic. I've played this so much as a kid and now I can as an adult too. It is harder than I remember - and the game is difficult too.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Brings back memories of mom smoking cigarettes at the dinner table, the sharp smell of whiskey as my dads leather belt cracked across my back, and the high pitch whine of the CRT monitor, makes me miss being a kid...
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros: Core gameplay loop is fun. The main campaign (particularly American side) is well designed gameplay-wise. Cons: The (usual for this mix of genres) occasional problems with overenthusiastic AI and clumsy switching between first-person and strategic perspectives. The Red Odyssey campaign is horrible, I semi-regret getting there as far as I did. All in all, it gets you back into late 90's-early 2000's time of experimentation with mixing FPS and basebuilding RTS, but occasionally reminds…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was one of the first real video games I played as a kid and I have a lot of fond memories playing it with my Dad. It is the best fusion of RTS and FPS I have ever seen and has a surprisingly good story. The game play may be a little clunky but it has such a rich late 90's style that is only visually improved upon in this redux without making the game to "new"
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its a First Person shooter + Tower Defense + Chess. You build your base up and protect your key pieces then build offensive pieces to attack another base. You can snipe out drivers from opponents tanks or pieces then commandeer them.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the greatest games of all time, in a genre that gamers love but that developers continue to pretend doesn't exist, which includes basically this, to some extent Dragons Dogma, and Mount and Blade. The mixture of FPS and RTS components with a strategy map and story, whether emergent or predefined, is gaming gold. But I guess it takes actual imagination and talent to make games like that, so we should just be grateful we've ever seen anything like them at all.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The only true fusion of rts and first person tank combat.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Literally can't beat the last American Mission because even though I blow up the enemy transport, the game still complains that I didn't blow it up in time on my way back to base.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I loved this game. I played the original in the 90's on my voodoo gpu. But nostalgia couldn't even help this gem get a good review. tl/dr: Get the remaster of Battlezone II. Don't buy this unless you love frustration. I don't really know what the developers had in mind when they rereleased it. But they sure didn't have the goal to make this a fun experience in todays time. And I am also sure they didn't playtest this. Most Missions have some sort of countdown sooner or later. At the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A classic. Combination of RTS and FPS. The redux makes the game look a lot better than the original. Red Odyssey was some pretty hardcore action on very hard difficulty. Missions range from easy to brutal in the game. Varied missions. Still some janky pathfinding and odd collision boxes around terrain and buildings that can annoy, but are easily worked around.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The first PC game I ever played - over 20 years later - the game not only holds up - Its Pure class
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Quite honestly the original 1998 version of the game was the only game I played as a teenager growing up. I got it for Christmas right after its release and it was the best game I had ever seen graphically speaking at the time and now it is actually way better with the REDUX version. It became a family game between my dad brothers and myself with reverse wired cables between the 2 house computers so we could play without using the old dial-up and tying up the landline. Spent literally thousands…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun game and a different take on strategy. I started playing the original games campaign when i was 7 or 8 years old and played it repeatedly. One day about 5 years ago i saw a remaster of the game and was thrilled to play one of my childhood games again. The game is great and there are many great mods but overall I'm a bit disappointed in the game. Multiplayer constantly crashes due to bad net code, many weapons are poorly designed or do not do the job they were designed for very well, the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The best game ever, well before its time, at the time.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A masterful combination of strategy and action combat, where you get to fight things personally. A wonder of game mechanics for it's time back when the original was released.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I would not recommend this game because this is one big unfinished tech demo, money rip off and it was like this in 1998. I was amazed by it in 1998, but could not understand why game play makes little sense. Now I know it is simply unfinished. Some scenarios written on the shoulder and that all. Nice tech, some ideas implemented in a cheap way. Such a waste, it could be a really good and fun game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Someone added the Black Dogs Campaign as a mod and I LOVE them for it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Battlezone is one of my all time favourites, one of the first games I paid cash for (having played the shareware version) and spent countless hours exploring and finding all the hidden secrets (first map has a lunar lander with a ridiculous techno-playing directed energy weapon on it). Battlezone 98 Redux is basically the same game with improved graphics. All the fun of sniping enemies and stealing their ships all over again.
unlabelledView post →great, if only some controls were tweaked this could be a scartcraft but with the player in the field
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →a classic that ruined my life, for want of more games like it
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am one of the OGs from the old days of BZ98. Yup, im that guy B. This is one hell of a game. Even if Herb doesnt like what steam has done, its a good one. Worth the time and effort to learn the game and play the hell of out it. GG
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →great old game, original was publish in 98. Love to play.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Oh man, Battlezone: the Red Odyssey was one of my first true gaming moments and I loved it so much. It was my most favorite game for a very long time. It was believed for a while thar the source code got lost and it therefore wouldn't become available as DLC for Battlezone 98 Redux, but I guess the developers either found it or remade it from scratch since DLC has been available for some time now. I bought Battlezone 1 some time after experiencing Red Odyssey and I was sure it had background…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of my first games on PC, came with the family computer along with Starsiege and some other random software. Played the hell out of it then, beat both campaigns multiple times. Its a cool mix of FPS and RTS mechanics. The AI is pretty lacking on both sides but the singleplayer is fun enough to revisit.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Best RTS-FPS mashup ever made!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →cold war space commie killer simulator is pretty nice
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great to see the base game restored and able to be enjoyed once again. It is a classic, and the mod support is great. Red Odyssey, however, is for dedicated masochists only. I found myself getting fed up with it back in the day and never finishing it after hitting a particularly frustrating mission, and age has only brought less patience as I find myself getting fed up with it even earlier than before.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Can't rebind the 'jump' key to 'space'. I know programmers are not designers or gamers, but is anyone really that stupid? Also, don't seem to be able to bind Mouse1 to fire? PS. Why do newbie scum always laugh when someone says the truth?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Love this game from 28 years ago! Its like civilization build while driving a hover tank on planets. PS the asteroid belt used to be a planet. and the cold war on earth had armies in space after alien technology True or False or Diversions. Believe what you like, but play it and save often. Runs on slow machines, though this is a remake.... oh and there are map editor creators...
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The play is the best thing about this old game. Infinate amount of scrap to use and pretty good first person shooter for its time.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty cool and fun mixture of FPS and RTS.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game is not playable, the horizontal rotation controls dont work, either on the keyboard or on the mouse you will just get endlessly destroyed while trying desperately to rotate your vehicle
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i guess im just old but this game is still a banger
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is still to this day pleasing to pay both graphically and physics wise. I had this game original from the box on disk before all this digital download stuff. Played it to death, got real good at playing it and got even better and fighting other players online. Only pvp game I could make some serious kills in. I still enjoy paying it. back then we didn't have hackers, coders, cheats.. just straight up fighting with real skill and heart. It plays great, graphics for it's age are still very…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An ancient but great game!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a nostalgic player from years ago when I was a kid, I remember playing this game from start to finish without issues on the nintendo 64. Even rise of the black dogs. The game was fun and it left me with a strong impression about hover tanks and units and the campaigns were interesting and varied, lots of fun. ... This is supposed to be that game. But the experience I've had is violently and uncomfortably difficult. So much so that it makes progression incredibly tedious and frustrating. I…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The closest thing to it is like playing counterstrike as you shoot people and use the numbered options to communicate with your team, except with this game you are piloting a hover tank and building a base that can attack someone elses base. There are many different weapons and vehicles you can make to protect or attack. It's easy enough to simultaneously order your units around with the numbered options while fighting the enemy.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is such an underappreciated title. One of the first games to merge both FPS mechanics with RTS strategy. Really enjoyable game play, once you work out what the real mission objectives are (No Spoilers). Played this game to death when it came out and glad to see it got a remaster to play on modern hardware.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Love this game inside and out. Better than most other strat and shooters I've played
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nauseating movements of your vehicles. Abysmall controls.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are few FPS/RTS mashups and this may be the best of them. I remember playing the demo on my dad's work laptop and going head to head on Heat.net whenever I could. Just be aware that Spilt Milk is an awful level in TRO and the BD campaign gets significantly easier from there. The AI is also absolutely braindead and you will have to personally do every ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing yourself because your own units will routinely ignore direct commands to hunt and attack specific targets, instead just…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Playing this game and seeing the opening video as a child is why I have "I'm gonna thump 'em" as a vocal tick.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →ggasdfasdf awfawefa dsf a
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was not very fun in my humble opinion. i give it a 6/10 at best. the gameplay is not very complex and the difficulty spikes (even on very easy difficulty) were a bit much towards the end of the campaign. Maybe the multiplayer is better? either way, it is very dated in terms of gameplay and mission design (repetitive and unimaginative)
