Batora: Lost Haven is a game that could have been really good if it was made by more competent developers. As it is, it's just okay. The story has some great ideas that could have been really powerful and emotional, but the writing is just abysmal. The dialogue feels like it was written by an 8 year old and the characters are inconsistent, obnoxious and just plain stupid. There is a choice-and-consequence mechanic and the story does change based on your actions (apparently there are 4…

It kind of feels like a game that was going to be a different game, then changed to this game, then wasn't finished. I actually played the demo and liked it well enough to get this on a bit of a discount around release, but the demo is a bit misleading because you only ever get 3 abilities during the game and you do NOT get them quickly. It makes combat very, very boring - it's like if you took a top-down Zelda game and slapped some Diablo onto it without actually adding any abilities. The…

Batora is a game with no meat on its bones. I would give it a mixed review if I had the chance, it is by no means horrible but at the same time it is such a forgettable experience. The Good : + Graphics and cutscenes looks nice for an indie game. + Most lines are voice acted, which increases the immersion. + UI looks clean and modern. The Bad : - Combat. It just doesn't have enough variety. Fight red enemies with your melee and purple with your ranged. Only a few special attacks unlocks…

The game is decent in many areas. The combat worked alright, the story premise was neat, but the overall game is a big o' pile of meh. The inventory system is complicated for almost no impact on combat, the replayability is made annoying by unskippable cutscenes, and the overall game just seems weaker than others in its category. Decent game to get on sale, but even then, better to spend your time on something else.

A dear friend got me this game, so believe me when I say it had to be particularly bad for me to be able to stomach saying so in a review. batora is pretty much bog standard for something released in the later 2010's-- the main character is an insufferable 'chosen one' with little to no redeeming quality, and the game feels almost schizophrenic in design, especially with go-nowhere systems such as the cracked alignment system and the way quests are laid out. I went in expecting an epic…

I finished the game, but I can't say I would recommend it. I finished it because I'm a completionist, and I hate leaving unfinished games behind. But it was a chore. The main reason is the writing. It's all so rushed, so uncooked. You meet an NPC for the first time "Hi, I'm good!", and then you want to sacrifice everything in order to protect/save that NPC. In the next dialogue another NPC comes and says "Muwahahaha I'm evil!", and then you decide that you need to kill that NPC (that you…

I had a good time with Batora: Lost Haven, but if there is a game that is a mixed bad, this is it. It's not a masterpiece, but it's not garbage either. More complex than a casual game, but nowhere near a full RPG. The combat is fairly unique, yet super simple. There are puzzles, but they are extremely simple and forgiving. The story is neither interesting nor unimaginative. There are choices, but each choice is like saving someone you know or saving everyone else. The graphics are somewhat…

I'm always torn whether I should rate a game based on whether I disliked it, or whether I think other genre fans would like it. If you're an ARPG fan and don't mind immature dialogue, you might really enjoy this game. I found it grating and really kind of silly (dialogue). You can't talk about grim subjects with witty quips and slang, and expect players to stay engaged and feel gravitas about the situation. Also, your character levels up but you don't make any choices when that happens.…

Like people have pointed out, Avril is an absolutely insufferable protagonist. Like Forspoken levels of insufferable. And, no, the narrative is not creative enough (The big twist at the end is extremely obvious) nor long enough to justify the price tag. I think the best way to hammer home how little effort went into this game is that the characters are supposed to be from London and absolutely none of them have even a hint of a British accent.

There are some good things to say: 1. It looks beautiful. 2. There are some mechanics to play around, although very straightforward. 3. it is very simple, so it's open for kids and very casual players. 4. You can make choices. I have no clue what the actual consequences are to whatever you choose but I doubt there's any impact other than a few lines of chatter. But there are also bad ones: 1. The first hour felt like a slog. Very boring to make progress in general, I made it to the first…

Millennial writing isekai. Snark From Another World. Both the protagonist and her why are you here bestie spend the whole game making snide comments. Decisions don't have any weight to them because there was no world building. Do you want to save the character you just met or the tribe you just met? Fully voiced though. The combat is alright but it soon gets repetitive and the upgrade system is mostly just health and damage boosts. Also there's some very basic puzzles.

I am not quite sure where all the hate in the reviews here comes from. I had fun with this game so far. I got it on sale for five bucks and the game already made up for that with the two hours of fun I had with it. And I expect to have a few more. I would compare the game to Bastion or Children of Morta: A little action adventure some people might consider an ARPG, although that is a bit of a stretch (as it is for Bastion and CoM). The combat is snappy and fun, the character customisation is…

Batora: Lost Haven is a fine adventure with very frustrating combat mechanics. You have the sun, melee and the moon, ranged. Aiming the moon projectile is beyond dumb on a controller so that's where the frustration comes from, with more on top of it later on the game. I'll talk about more later on this review. So, I'd say to get this game on sale if you want a game you can beat in a rainy afternoon and have some fun with it if you can get the hang of the combat, which I'm gonna be honest, I…

Game is short, story nonsensical and characters are either weak, bland or annoying. If the game was made by one or few people, then it would be an achievement. Game is very very simple and easy, I'd probably enjoy it if I was 10 and this was my first game of sorts. Can't recommend it to anyone.

Pros - interesting combat system. Utilizes 2 different "elements". Game difficulty will depend on which you pick. - enemies scale to your level - choices matter leading to different couple endings - has ng+ Cons - game is short. 2 playthroughs is enough to reach 100% and in 17hrs. - balancing issue especially in new game+. Regular mob battles can be harder than boss fights. 1st and 2nd boss fights can take longer than the 3rd and 4th boss. - poor NPC AI, you will likely get a game over…

Bought as part of a Humble bundle, game looked interesting but doesn't have one redeeming quality, I'm just glad I didn't buy this as a single game. Combat gets boring very quickly, sluggish unresponsive controls don't help. Suicidal ally NPC's who will stand in enemy AOE's and die forcing you to restart sections. Predictable story with what might be the worst character development and dialogue of any game I've ever played, very much reminiscent of Forspoken. Was shocked to read "Seeing…

My one major gripe is the overwhelming amount of exposition. Does every little pickup really need dialogue? There are 2 skip buttons, and yet somehow, it's impossible to skip dialogue. Yes, I DO know what the buttons do, but you still need to press more buttons during info dumps than during the actual combat. Just let me skip the entirety of the dialogue or turn it off in options, please. I'm sure some people care about the story, but I have a hard time seeing it with how it's presented.…

Cons: #1. You're forced to fight with two different ability sets constantly #2. Very little character progression #3. No gear, amulets, rings, weapons or equipable items of any kind (other than runes) #4. You can't change or set the game's resolution #5. Can't set the game's frame rate at all #6. Periodic forced battles AND you're forced into the tiniest area during battle, so if you're a ranged player or someone who likes distance between you & the enemies, then you're SOL #7. I can see why allot of people gave this game negative reviews. Over all the game is fun. The down side is you go into the spirit realm allot. Every minor and major choice you go into the spirit realm to solve puzzles. This gets annoying after the first few times. It is neat in the beginning, and then gets old very quickly. It is like the creators could not decide what else to throw in to make the game interesting, so off to the spirit realm. The problem with the puzzles in the spirit realm…

I don't think it's bad but I also don't really recommend it so that's why I've had to go with a Not Recommended rating. This game does a lot of stuff pretty well, but it's hard not to see the places where it falls short. The two-mode combat system is interesting, but combat upgrades are doled out at specific points in the story rather than according to your level, so the progression systems can feel a bit meaningless, and almost all the runes are just stat changes, so your ability to customize your playstyle is limited. The story's alright, but it feels pretty rushed. The game sets up this big elemental…

Right, so I've just wasted several hours of my life on this game that somehow managed to be slightly less terrible than I expected. Which, let's be honest, is like saying this headache isn't as bad as my migraine - it's still bloody annoying, isn't it? They've gone and voiced every single line in the game, which would be impressive if half of it didn't sound like they recruited their voice actors from a drunk karaoke night. I really don't mean that as the kick in the teeth that it sounds like tho. Up front, I want to say that the game isn't *bad*. The core of it is fine; it's not saddled with technical glitches or horribly broken mechanics or anything like that. But a core gameplay loop that's "fine" doesn't carry the other issues. On the plus side, there are some decisions you need to make that have actual moral weight, and which you can't avoid. The story concept isn't bad, and in fact is arguably pretty good. The voice acting isn't too bad either; the biggest issue there is that they…

This game just defeated me. Like, I try to be fair and give every game some time - after all not every title need to grab you from the get go. Batora have some really nice visuals and character designs, decent sound and interesting mechanics, where you need to constantly switch between two modes of combat - melee (Sun) and ranged (Moon), as some enemies might be immune to one of them, not to mention some simple puzzles. There's just something missing in this one. Its an isometric ARPG. The game has a ranged and melee form and specific colors associated with it and enemies you can only really damage with one form, so theres switching back and forth. This is interesting at first, but it doesn't evolve much after that. You unlock two special abilities for each form as well as a shield ability, and thats it. I know now that this game has different endings, but I am not sure I would want to replay though the game to see each of them. 4/10. The gameplay itself is fine; as others mentioned, it's got a quirky combat system that feels fresh at first but slowly gets a little annoying. The moral decisions (at least the few I saw before dropping) are gray-area but designed to make you feel bad if you don't pick the 'right' call, after first telling you that there's no 'right' call and to make your own decisions. Reminds me of Spec Ops: The Line, only that one at least had a reason for it and kept the making-you-feel-bad part to…

Picked this up as part of a Humble bundle. I get what they were trying to do here and the execution is... adequate. But the writing is straight up cringy. Every time any of the characters talks, all I hear is "Hello fellow kids". If the gameplay was better, I would stick with it, but it's just not worth the bad writing.

The game has some good points going for it, especially the really nice artwork and environments. It works well on Linux too, even though there is some heavy stuttering during the first 15 minutes of play, after which it smoothens out. Sadly the combat becomes dull and repetitive very quickly, and it doesn't feel particularly satisfying or progressive either. There was nothing in the story or voice acting to keep me engaged. And finally the puzzles are sometimes frustrating because you need to…

This game is a gem! Wondeful soundtrack and artstyle and a gameplay that flows really well for me. Switching between the elements goes very smoothly and feels very natural. Some abilities did feel a bit underwhelming but didn't really feel like I really needed them to survive and survive a fight. The story is pretty good too, little bit predictable at some points but all in all that didn't really bug me that much. The story has you making increasingly harder choices which will affect the…

At the beginning the combat was strange, but after the first hour it starts to be really funny. The boss fights are great and well-balanced and I love the puzzle sections, neither too easy nor frustrating. Wonderful art and good job with the cameras. Well done guys!

What a game. Loved every second of it. I did 1 playthrough so far and i cant recommend the game enough. The story, setting, music and voice acting are all top notch. If you like arpgs or just looking for a game with a good story you cant go wrong with Batora

It's competent Californian writing is obviously a problem here but overall it's OK-ish teen grade science fiction. Visual novel + action RPG in a dreamy world. Only 52% played it for 10+ minutes (and got both powers)

The story is weird. By "weird", I mean the story/lore feels needlessly bloated, and it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.. But what matters is that the story makes sense to the characters in the game :D Otherwise, there's a lot going on: you have to collect runes and other collectibles, to power up and unlock your inner superhero. You fight some (actually, a lot of) battles. The combat is somewhere between decent and fun. But also, you have to solve puzzles to achieve.. stuff. The…
