What people are saying
Dreamscaper is a touching roguelite with fluid combat and a deep story, but some find it grindy or unbalanced.
Many players praise the game's emotional depth and how it handles themes like grief and depression, with one calling it a very creative use of the roguelike formula. The combat is often described as fluid and satisfying, and the soundtrack and visuals are widely admired. [1][2][29]
However, some critics note that the game can feel grindy or repetitive, especially early on, and that the story unfolds slowly. A few also mention balance issues, such as certain effects being overpowered, and occasional technical problems like crashes. [3][10][28][35]

60 of 214 · most liked firstThe soundtrack is amazing, the visuals are so lush and vibrant, and the combat is smooth, and accommodating. A couple notes: I've had a couple of strokes, and as such my hands don't work so well. Lucid mode in the game gradually inches me toward a reduction in difficulty, which my erratic hands appreciate. Also, I can't really remember faces anymore, so everyone in the game being faceless, and yet very emotive, is very cathartic and I appreciate it a lot. This game was probably…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game helped me adjust to living alone for the first time in my life, and reminded me of how important it is to have an outlet and to connect with people. I highly recommend this game, not just for the sentimental value it now has to me, but also for the graphics, music and fluid combat. On top of all that, the attacks can be sooooo satisfying. Smacking an enemy with a bat and sending them flying across the screen, rebounding off a wall; I couldn't stop laughing the first few runs i started…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dreamscaper is a roguelike which plays like a blend of The Binding Of Isaac mixed with Hades. Unfortunately it does not compare well with either of them. All the pieces are in place: The combat is well built upon with melee, ranged attacks and spells as well as blocking and a dodge roll, there is a large variety of weapons and skills and there is even a story to uncover concerning a regular (though propably depressed) young woman going through reocurring nightmares, while trying to make friends…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really like the visuals in general and the whole vibe. But the faceless designs of the human characters really detract from the emotive experience that the game wants the player to experience (though I can logically understand the rationale). The weighty combat feels a little too clunky for my liking. Perhaps I'm just too spoiled by the arcadey, kamikaze nature of Hades. I wouldn't recommend this based on my personal experience. But I still feel it deserves a chance for those players who…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is targeted at 2 opposite spectrum of players. On one hand you have the story enjoyers and on the other the roguelike (roguelites) where you just want to play different runs each time. It's a decent mesh but i can see why many people will not like it. Plenty of variety of weapons and enemies. Levels are decently long and a run takes me about an hour or so, slightly on the longer side imo. Why the negative review? Once you max out relationships with NPCs you unlock a hidden final…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Review of Dreamscaper. Verdict: thumbs up, but with reluctance. This review has two parts: (1) what this game does new, (2) the macro of what this game's like. (1). Clearly, the appeal of this game is the theme/mood. Defeat your nightmares? You'll need a healthy state of mind first! How well they delivered on this potential leaves a bit to be desired. The powerups are things like "Meditate: be okay asking for help" and such. These messages are nice - they're in the right place.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beautiful game with a touching story, let down only by frequent crashes which progressively get more frequent as you delve deeper into the game. A terrible shame that the bugs weren't resolved before the updates stopped.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hello friends, Today I will review the game Dreamscape. On it's surface this game is a simple rogue dungeon game thru the same dungeon with different map configurations. In it's depth, this game dwells on psychological issues such as mental illness, death and loss, depression, anxiety, and many other issues which can effect people. Being a person with depression myself, I feel very close with the protagonist of this game. The main character is a female woman named Cassidy. The player can…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dreamscaper, aaaaah... Dreamscaper. How long was it? 43.6 HOURS? DAAAAAYUM! Since Hades I was not so hooked on a Roguelike to the point where I only stopped when I mastered everything. I will start with the story. Dreamscaper drops you in the life of Cassidy, and in the beginning of the game, you are completely clueless about what is going on. That, however, is deliberate. The story progresses as you talk to other people and evolve your relationships with them. The story is rich, it portrays…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've bounced off this quite a few times but decided to keep it in the end for the gorgeous but lifeless art, and a useful lesson in game design. To cut to the chase its a very beautiful but ultimately dull game. I can imagine the designers are frustrated as they feel they have ticked lots of game design check boxes, and yet it isn't the success they would expect from doing so. They have achieved something that I have never seen so perfectly done before - by walking an impossible tight rope…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I took me about 20 hours to complete the first run with the final boss of "Loss". It then took about another 24 hours (44 in total) to level up all the friendships to get the final ending after defeating the "Loss" boss with friends. After the first few hours, I almost gave up since it felt very repetitious but I decided to stick with the game to see where it was going. I am glad I did. I started enjoying the runs and unlocking/mastering the various equipment. There are some real duds but most…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Charming roguelite which punches far above its weight due to the fluidity of its combat and depth of writing in its relationship system and the slowly unfolding narrative of an unreliable narrator. My biggest gripe is that the story unfolds on a pace much slower than the actual gameplay, it's to be expected that multiple runs are required but after unlocking nearly everything there is and even beating the 'final' boss multiple times the game gives me a hard 'no, go grind affection points some…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dreamscaper is a striking action roguelite that blends fast-paced combat with deeply personal storytelling, creating an experience that feels as much like an emotional journey as it does a mechanical challenge. Developed by Afterburner Studios and published by indie.io and Maple Whispering Limited, the game follows Cassidy, a young woman navigating life in a new city while wrestling with anxiety, isolation, and self-doubt. By day, she explores the quiet coastal town of Redhaven, meeting people,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Picked this game up on a whim and must say I was pleasantly surprised. The core gameplay is very fun and each run feels pretty unique with the large amount of build variety. The characters are also interesting and it has some pretty good writing. I really enjoyed my time with this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →6.0/10 It's a boring take on what Hades does. I did not care at all about the daytime story at all. The daytime part of the game was more of a chore where I have to quickly cycle through talking to uninteresting NPCs to bump their friendship meter up to get some upgrades. My experience with the game was carried entirely by the gameplay, and that eventually became too repetitive for me to continue.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is like a pizza with no toppings; I'd still eat it if I have it, but I wouldn't recommend it to others when there are so many higher quality alternatives at a cheaper or similar price. At the current state anyways, it might be better with future updates.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'd give this about a 7.5. For context, I'd give Hades 1 & 2 a 9.5. It's a solid rougelite. The outside of the combat art style and story is simple and forgettable. The combat is good, but fairly unbalanced. Leech effects, heal on hit, are outrageously powerful compared to the other stats, and even with a recent nerf, are still the best by far. Some moves and weapons also feel substantially worse than others. All and all it's enjoyable, but isn't an award winner.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of my favourite games, and one that I keep going back to. It's about grief and loss and dealing with it, and in between your forays into your subconscious you meet friends that can help you through your waking depression. You find the dodge you like, then you find the shield you like, and then you get to play with which elements you prefer. I'm a lightning/water, myself. It's fun to extinguish-crit. You'll likely end up with a weapon you favour, too. You can pump the difficulty…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a fun roguelite game. The visuals are great, the combat is fun and the variety of weapons and abilities give you a lot of options for different play styles. Music is well made, maybe could use a couple more songs not to be too repetetive, but still really good. And the interections with npc feel like real conversations with real poeple, it's so good and interesting that you just want to come back for more of them. And going for all achievements does not feel like a huge grind. It takes…

You slide closed yet another message from a Redditor telling you to get therapy and wonder when there will finally be a roguelike that is themed around your own screwed-up-ness. (Un?)fortunately, I am either pleased or sorry to inform you that today is the day! Dreamscaper is a top-down action roguelike based on taking mundane items and using them to fight…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Update After 60+ Hours and 100% Completion The dreamworld absolutely delivers. The music? perfection. It loops forever without ever feeling repetitive, and it fits the atmosphere to a T. Combat flow stays smooth even when the enemies start feeling a bit samey. Hunting down new weapons and grinding them up is fun. Going for 100% adds a real challenge. The overworld, though? Peak cringe. Crafting feels pointless, and every NPC conversation is an insta-skip with zero guilt. The memories you find…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A cute little roguelike. While the game itself is fairly short, going for 100% completion will keep you busy for quite some time. The difficulty is rather high, especially at the beginning. I eventually finished it on the hardest setting (Intensity 8), but honestly… it took much longer than I’d like to admit. Despite the challenge, the story while brief is still solid. The theme of loss and regret are handled surprisingly well and add emotional weight to the experience. Overall, a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Seriously impressed with the quality of the work put into this game. Easy to learn, fun to tinker with different styles and weapons, and just a little effort unlocks additional skills, etc. Smooth controls and sound can make or break a game like this, and this team got it right. Looking forward to relaxing for a few minutes here and there with this one.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really fun game but the grind is insane. If you enjoy a fluid top down fighter with a few puzzles, a few dynamic bosses, and a kind, yet dark story brewing in the shadows...then this game is for you.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dreamscaper - Send Yourself Asleep! Want to play Hades, but as a slightly dumpy millennial? Me neither really.... The combat is alright, the weapons and moves are alright, the art style is alright, the progression is alright. The only thing not alright, is the dialogue when you're not in the dream world. Jesus. It's the most sleep-inducing stuff ever; myself having to desperately resist falling into my own bloody dream world while listening to that tripe. It's mind-numbingly dull and suitably…

So it'll be interesting to see how it goes. https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/products/dreamscaper-switch #NintendoSwitch #IndieGames #Dreamscaper

This game takes a bit to get going and I honestly wasn't hooked on it at first, or so I thought, but I found myself thinking, "well, I've got 30min before I gotta leave.....I can get in a few levels or a round" and then would be playing....and playing....and playing. The dialogue in the real world can be a bit forced/lame at times but it is also an example of how people should properly interact and hold conversations about difficult and sensitive topics. But once I finally made it to the 2nd Dream after about 5 attempts.... it starts you back at the start of Dream 1 again. This is TOO roguelite for me. Would have preferred to have checkpoints after bosses at least.

unlabelledView post →It took me a minute to warm up to Dreamscaper. The combat feels a little slow, the unlocks feel a little grindy -- and the introduction to the story puts you in the shoes of a tragic depressed millennial, which is a bit on the nose as far as indie-game storylines go. But something kept drawing me in. I tend to play fairly mindless action games as I wind down at night, and Dreamscaper was just the sort of gaming junk food I needed so I gave it more time, and I'm glad I did. I could go on and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bro, Cassidy got that THICKNESS. Ahem. Excuse me. In all seriousness, this is a solid Roguelite. Doesn't do anything super original, but if you like the genre and titles like Hades, Risk of Rain, Gatekeeper, Curse of the Dead Gods, etc., you'll probably find Dreamscaper pretty enjoyable. Also, the aesthetic is very peaceful and relaxing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is way too difficult... but not in a good way.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a really fun hades-like with a lot of interesting mechanics and build variety. From a story perspective, it's a very creative use of the roguelike formula: delving into the main character's subconscious over and over again each night to battle her fears and come to terms with her past is a touching idea. Progression feels smooth and starting a new run is always exciting. I have two issues with the game: first, the bosses are not well designed in my opinion; and second, the dialogue is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dreamscaper is yet another action roguelike. It has a few interesting ideas which make it stand out, but overall just feels worse than similar games. Unless you completed Hades, Hades 2, Issac or even Deflector and still want more of the same there is literally no reason to ever touch this game. Steam Deck Dreamscaper works well on the deck, but because of 3D graphics the fans are noticeable and battery will last a few hours tops.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It starts slowly, but it gets better over time. The true enjoyment of this game is only revealed after a considerable amount of grinding (20ish runs) and the selection of the nightmare difficulty for bosses and enemies, which provides a greater variety and challenge to the game. The biggest issue with this game is that each completed run can take quite a while (average of 45 minutes) and the player is always one or two mistakes from dying, so each run is very intensive.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Short review after completing the game only missing one achievement: a fun indie action roguelite similar to Binding of Isaac, not re-inventing the wheel but still solid. Pros: - Pretty world and design, from the locations that you traverse (all in a dream) to the monster and boss designs with great visual effects - Somber, action pumping and sad music, fitting well with the theme and art style (second location has superb music) - Story revolves around relationships, loss and acceptance,…

I started this game in early access and followed the developmental journey and now that patch 1.1 has come out I am going to start a fresh run, but we will get to the meat of the review. The walking tutorial is AFTER you already walked for at least a minute, it bombards you with controls, moves, actions... yet I think, dosent explain the "mana" part or that there is a dodge button. If Im wrong, it just showcases how overloaded you are with everything, before you even get to expereince anything. The movement feels slow, actions dont have the punch to it that you wish, story is overlayed in a completely missable way, immideatly…

And it saddens me that so many people dislike it for the most insignificant things while I see a lot of praise for game that lack.. well.. the game. The gameplay is great, the combat is fine, albeit may feel unfair-ish sometimes when enemies hit you with telegraphed attacks from outside the screen or when you are hit by something you should not have been hit with. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's one of these games where you do 'runs' rather than just play a campaign or story like a normal game. I'll never understand why games are made that are intended for you to fail. And you collect and buy things in the 'runs' that then disappear when the run ends. And the gameplay is very much about reflexes and memorising attack patterns. Hard no from me.
