Character Creation: a lot of classes simply are not viable options in this game. If you set up a class without looking up some good builds for this game you will almost certainly not get past the first level. Minor annoyances: 1.) Being hit by an enemy sends you flying backwards which can get you killed if you are near a cliff. 2.)…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"An Elder Scrolls Legend, indeed. But a Legend for all the wrong reasons." - LGR Other then that I played it before the Steam release... clunky, buggy, and had to fiddle with configuration stuff to make it boot into full screen right. =================================== SO IS IT BAD? optimization and bugs, oh very much so, and game itself is incredibly punishing early on, especially depending on your build... but the game itself, while different and less then Daggerfall, is enjoyable and has…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm a fan, I truly am. The lore and game play are there. BUT, this game is unplayable on steam in it's current state. I've tried every gimmick on DOS Box to improve the frame rate, but if it doesn't fix one issue, it will create another whether it's the resolution being too small or the mouse not working or the audio cutting out. Don't expect to get past the first dremora you see as soon as you spawn. Until THEY fix the issues with the frame rate DONT BUY THIS GAME! After all it's not our job…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In my quest to play through all the Elder Scrolls games, I knew I would come across this game too. That and the other unpopular game... Now that I've played through it too, I can see why it wasn't a great success. Let's wrap this up, the game actually adds value to the lore and world of Elder Scrolls. It goes into great detail about the Deada and their clans and deepens their history in the world of Nirn and beyond. Without these approaches in Battlespire, there would certainly be no TES IV:…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As an Elder Scrolls fan who started at Oblivion. the game is buggy as a legend said. but the content is lit and makes me want to explore more about this game. It's would be better if this game got a Remake into some kind of first-person dungeon crawler rogue-like/Souls-like. If you want the fun game don't buy it. If you want to just complete your Elder Scrolls collection wait for it on sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very disappointing, I was under the impression that this was a port of the game. Instead nothing more but a game being run using a DOS emulator. The store page says it has partial controller support I have yet to find a way to configure my Xbox controller.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm sure you're familiar with the expression "one step forward, two steps back". Well, someone gave Daggerfall a big bottle of home-made booze, because Battlespire takes a few steps forward, but then fumbles back, sideways and every which way. Battlespire is many things: unique, captivating, stylish, fully voice-acted, full of lore, even fun. However, of all the things it is, there's one thing that Battlespire isn't: a well-made game. Visually, if we cast aside DOSBox limitations and the fact…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So... Battlespire. I have actually beaten this game and I have to say that... it wasn't that bad. It was quite awful at times, yes, but it was... fine. Battlespire has a few good points to it. The music is very good, giving the game a very eerie atmosphere. Especially on the 5th Level! The lore is also very interesting, and so is the combat (at least on the first level...) Now... the bad. The game is ridiculously hard. You HAVE to make a custom class to prosper in Battlespire, and I myself…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's so weird seeing people recommend this game, and they have like 1 hour playtime? Completing this is pure ball torture.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bethesda attempt at dipping their toes in the Doom and Quake market, using Tamriel setting and expanding the lore. Born as a Daggerfall expansion, it became a stand-alone game that had an interesting idea behind it, but suffers from a terrible technical state and a clearly rushed development. Some interesting NPCs, good voice acting (considering the times) and a fine soundtrack. Sadly, the severe bugs and some design choices (like the lack of resources, the game restarting everytime you die,…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Quick Summary You know when a friend you trust tells you a movie really isn't that good, so when you finally go and see it you end up pleasantly surprised? That's about how Battlespire was for me. I've heard all around the internet that Battlespire really isn't that great of a game, and maybe that tainted my perspective going into the game, but I came out of it actually enjoying the game a lot! Of course, as with other reviews you'll see here, I have to lay down caveats first. Yes, you will…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Spoiler free review + I actually beat this game unlike many others here Overview: In Battlespire you are trapped in a series of dungeons and have to rely on items found in these dungeons to survive; there is no currency or merchants or any way to travel out of these dungeons until you beat the objective in each one. Potions and other supplies are limited, so if you use potions for every enemy encounter you can make it incredibly difficult or even impossible to progress. There are 7 levels…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It seems that Bethesda took inspiration from the Ultima: Underworld series, which I can respect. However I can only recommend this to hardcore Elder Scrolls fans only because this game is absolutely brutal and will punish you if you create an insufficient character at the start of the game. The voice acting is cheesy but I can't knock on it too much because it was a product of its time. I personally would advise getting this on a sale because paying full price seems a bit much for this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this game when it was relatively new and struggled to get it to run well on any computer since. Finally, with some nice tweaks, we have very functional Battlespire!!! Battlespire and Redguard came out at the same time in the wake of the flawed behemoth known as Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall. Redguard was product of Todd Howard who would go on to become the face of the franchise while Battlespire was the work of Ken Rolston who would contribute much to ES III: Morrowind before…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I made a 70's pornstar. I drank a potion that made me fall slowly, then I decided the game is thrash, so I jumped down the pit next to the start. Then I got stuck to the wall. I couldn't die, so the game was softlocked. What a brilliant misadventure.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm glad Bethesda allowed modern players to experience this and Redguard, but man... this is absolute (as the Brits say) ♥♥♥♥♥!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I liked this spin-off. It would have been difficult for me if I had come from playing Skyrim. But coming from Arena to this, I can see how The elder scrolls franchise evolved.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I never have an issue with older games that look like ass. Older games that PLAY like ass are another matter entirely. I've played enough over the years that control just fine, that the odd one out which has a control scheme meant for crosseyed spider people and only registers commands when it feels like it can't play the "it's old, what do you expect" card. Then again, it's Bethesda, so this might just reinforce the assertion that Elder Scrolls games have always been built out of spit,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So recently I decided to finally check out the Elder Scroll games, and went into Battlespire completely blind. It's a great game if you're looking for a unforgiving, old school dungeon crawler and can put up with a little jank -Brutal but fair gameplay -Stellar level design -Cool setting -Incredible horror atmosphere -Moody OST full of dread -Great story and lore that focuses on the Daedra -Visuals reminiscent of old Sega Saturn 3D dungeon crawlers (I personally love the Saturns 3D…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A weird but interesting spin on Elder Scrolls. It ditches the open world for a more linear dungeon crawling experience and it definitely shows its age.

This game is a linear game in the Elder Scrolls franchise, which is interesting. It's also got some funny dialogue and a few interesting tidbits about the daedra, such as their political workings. That's it. This is one of the jankiest and most frustrating games I've ever played, with tough controls and gamebreaking bugs. It's also got a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What is Battlespire? Battlespire is an action RPG set in the world of The Elder Scrolls. Unlike the other classic games of the series, Battlespire acts as a spin-off, the game consists of multiple levels in which you must complete multiple objective in order to progress to the next levels. There are 7 levels, you get experience when finishing a level, which you may use to increase your character's attributes and skills. This game features no quest, nor open world. The Battlespire is a…

Its also the Second to Last DOS Game to be released with Redguard being the last DOS Game in 1998. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game feels like a big step back from Daggerfall. I think perhaps I'm just not a fan of the premise of this game, as much of the things I take issue with are, TECHNICALLY an improvement (?) or at least seem to be what the designers did intend to do. For example, the graphics are "Better" as they use images more often than pixel art, however, the low res images and models look so ugly in my opinion. The music is also much more atmospheric, which I suppose is "better" but to me, it is so much…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Much more fun than the previous Elder Scrolls games. In Battlespire, you can actually customize your controls and move around using the mouse instead of having to rely on the keyboard to look around. Plus, this game gives me major Doom vibes.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →AESL:Battlespire is a true rpg dungeon crawler from 1997 with a daedrical incredible atmosphere that holds up in 2022. In 1997 it was the best TES yet, if you didn't like random enviromental generation, which was a BIG flaw in TES:Daggerfall. Bethesda likely noticed how good the main quest ending to TES:Daggerfall was, and made a whole game about it. Sooo many different enviroments, most of which you can all see all four walls in at once unfortunately. I'll spare you the spoilers/specifics,…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Battlespire is a fun game, that I wish there was more of. I find it sad that many people only know about Skyrim, and not the rest of the mainline ES games, and that even less people know of the secondary games, because they're really well done. I wish they kept making these, between all of the main games. Heaven knows we could have had a lot, instead of all the re-releases of Skyrim. There is a bit of learning involved with the controls, but like the other earlier ES games, they're easy to use…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No amount of humorous dialogue can make up for a game so horrifically buggy even after a handful of official patches as to be, without hyperbole, almost unplayable. When it works, it's a very mediocre dungeon crawler with poor level design and extremely lackluster combat. The only positives are a few short seconds of funny voice lines and the mercy of the game being quite short.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this game specifically to fix the poor configuration mismanagement from Bethesda. Mission accomplished.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very buggy and unplayable. Having reached Level 5, I have faced many save corrupting glitches, that broke my game and made me quit. Even without the bugs, the game is quite bland, where every level is basically following the same formula: find an NPC/note, collect Sigils of Entry, collect several items throughout the map, push switches and then teleport to the next level, while fighting annoying enemies. But on the positive side, the game does seem to have a potentially good story and humor and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun fact, this game and Redguard almost put Bethesda into a pretty bad spot. And I can see why. The game feels weird. It was more of a puzzle game than a RPG. It has the things I love about Arena and Daggerfall, DND-esque character creation and having that early DOOM vibe. But I've been having technical problems which, can be fixed, but due to the fact the game doesn't interest me and I'm more invested in the mainline games (and Online). Just play Arena and/or Daggerfall Unity if you want a…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It just doesn't work, Todd
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I hear a lot of people call this the worst Elder Scrolls game, but honestly, I enjoyed it more than Arena and a bit more than Daggerfall. The dungeons, while still chock full of unhelpfully unmarked collectibles you have to find, are refreshingly not absolutely labyrinthian like the last couple of entries. Plus it has the quippiest protagonist in the entire series, which I found very entertaining.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →THE GOOD: - Character Creation System: It was really thought out, allows you to assign points to various skills and attributes (a kin to the future TES games). You have the option of also adding spells that your character will use (VERY IMPORTANT; this is also a "bad" aspect of the game), you cannot add spells later in the game, so choose your spells wisely! - Most of all the NPC's and enemies are fully voice acted. This was a pleasure to hear on my first run through, especially coming from the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Battlespire- while it would be incredibly easy to sit here and berate this unfunctional game I can't. TL:DR -> a relic of the past with flaws that are not entirely on the game. IF bethesda remade this today it would sell decently. not best seller or anything but would easily recoop the production costs. I had this game as a young child i believe on a windows XP computer, maybe a windows 2000 so i have some fond memories of this game off a iirc floppy drive. However, with nostalgia…

This is gaming like God intended. For real though, this game is noteworthy for a lot of reasons. It's the first Elder Scrolls game with voice acting, it's the first Elder Scrolls game to be fully hand crafted, it's the first Elder Scrolls game to take the player to Oblivion (and also the only game…
