What people are saying

A promising but buggy RPG that divides players with its punishing start and jank.

Many players praise the game's addictive, deep gameplay and rewarding progression from nobody to hero, comparing it to Kenshi, Baldur's Gate 3, and Mount & Blade. They highlight the fun of exploration, character builds, and the sense of accomplishment. [3][10][13]

However, critics point to numerous bugs, poor translation, and a steep difficulty curve that can feel like a grind. Some report game-breaking issues, while others note the game feels unfinished despite its 1.0 release. [2][24][26][28][29]

Praised addictive gameplay · rewarding progression · deep character builds
Criticised bugs and jank · poor translation · steep difficulty curve

The game has, potential. High, potential. Sadly its marred by bugs, some technical issues, a crappy camera, lack of polish and missing features. Why did it leave Early Access in this state? Likely because the Publisher forced the one single developer to. Yes, thats right, this is being made by one guy now. According to a very recent steam discussion thread made by someone who knows the developer, the game once had a full indie team of 20 people working on it. Now its down to one guy, and…

Love the concept. Needs refinement. Multitude of errors in messages (missing spaces, wrong syntax, etc.) Characters some times stop taking actions mid-combat, needs fixed. Difficulty curve is pretty steep, loot system needs some tuning - cleared out an entire bandit nest and only gained 2 daggers and a few materials. I would recommend this game, after some of the worst issues are patched/fixed. Until then, I cannot.

Jank. Good Lord, so much jank, playing it feels like swimming in Ganges river. Items which can only be picked up in a specific camera mode, load not loading sometimes, getting stuck in a wall after being pushed by enemies, unique adventurers disappearing forever into some limbo, even walking through doors is a freaking struggle and so on and so forth. I dare not to think how it looked like on 'release'. I wish devs would focus on stitching this zombie together before trying to do anything…

This game is incredibly good once you dive deeper into it. Yes it has some bugs (no game breaking ones), and there is no hand holding, darn right challenging. But once you find your character (Mage, fighter, defender, ranger, bard, etc) and your groups characters, what you want them to be, the adventures are so fun. So many quests, so much exploration, a lot of fighting, it takes me into its world. I will say "save often", also I found that I had to start over n over till I got the hang of it.…

This game came out in Early Access in 2023. It came out as a 1.0 release in April 2025. It still feels like it needs 12 months of a UI overhaul to be recommended as a paid game. The stink of AI-generated slop permeates most of the look and feel of the game. The concepts are great. A mercenary-type game where you have to start from the bottom, to the point of taking odd-jobs in town to make ends meet? Sign me up! Ohhh, then you get to the UI, and everything falls apart. The first issue…

Age of Reforging is a game that is a little bit complicated to recommend. To start with what I consider to be the major downsides: the English translation is pretty bad, and contains a lot of typos and moments of awkward phrasing. It has never gotten to the point where I didn't understand what characters were saying, but it is noticeable. Also, the game does have a number of bugs that are still being worked on at the time of this writing. I haven't encountered anything that truly broke the game…

Wtf. This should be early access! There are all kinds of unfinished things, like nothing happening when I shoot at someone, my companion not following me, camera not following, there's nothing telling me where I should go for my main quest, nothing happening after I kill the bear I was told to kill, it feels like hardly anything works like I expect.

I loved Kenshi, 100's of hours. Loved the Mount and Blade series. Loved Baldurs Gate 3. I Desperately tried to enjoy this but so many of the mechanics just don't feel good to play or flow right. The camera is a constant frustration, the modes reset on scene change and some camera modes don't have the same movement controls. The map doesn't rotate to align with your view. It's a small frustration but is annoying. The level ups and skills/powers feel weak. It's just not fun to play

This game is a highly addicting mashup of so many games: D:OS/BG3, Kenshi, and Wartales are the main influences I see. Character Creation and starting skills/talents are VERY much like D:OS/BG3 Overland travel, capturing/recruiting prisoners, world loot are all like Wartales Interactions and janky combat is very much like Kenshi. -Pros: Highly addicting gameplay. Starts very hard (like Kenshi... well not THAT hard) and you have to scrap out a living at the beginning while trying…

The bones of a good game are here. Inconsistent control scheme and lack of thought in the intro mission kinda turned me off the game. Example: I selected to play the mage and I cant carry a torch because I have a staff in both hands. I can not equip it in my second weapon set because "You cannot equip only an off hand item." Example: "Follow the bloody foot prints" - Its night time and you cant see anything. Example: Camera you have set changes to default when changing areas. Example: You get…

45 hours in and i have finally perfected my 14 day start. If that sounds like your type of game keep reading. This is like my fantasy Kenshi. I wish Wizards of the Coast would support developers like this and make games like this in the Forgotten Realms. Loving this game. If you are a min/maxer there are no real guides out there you will need to figure it out yourself. I really hope the word of mouth goes around and this game starts selling more.

First of all, please don't pay attention to the negative reviews. This game is great, and the potential here is unlimited. It's a slow burner as it is difficult initially, but if you can get past the first few stages of the main story and recruit and develop your team effectively, you will have a blast. Items and equipment are not cheap, so a good strategy from the beginning, I found, is to find work in a town very quickly. You can make money working with the blacksmith, the doctor, or the…

Game runs flawlessly on Linux. Game is a bit hard in the beginning, almost like a swords & sorcery version of Kenshi. Lot of fun plenty to do, I'm 80+ hours in and still working on the main quest. The only negative is there are no mods for the game. If there was good modding support, I can see myself with 1000+ hours in this.

I really do like the actual game, but the bugs make it hard. If you do buy this, be prepared to save before everything you do and make it a proper manual save with a name you can remember because otherwise you'll lose hours of progress or be forced to continue with old quest markers and quests that just straight up don't work half the time(probably more like one bugged out quest for every 5, but you get my point.). Played a bit more after the recent update, it REALLY helped with a lot of the…

garbage state which is so sad because i loved the original... Literally not even 2 actual hours in and already finding game breaking glitches - like not allowing me to engage in combat against wolves so my whole party just dies. I've tried reloading and same issue is happening, cant even get auto combat to work for that fight.. The fact that this game is suffering from such basic bugs while offering an ironman mode is insane.

Its a *VERY early access* game with no *early access* label on it. And rather of the worst type of early access. The slop is so immense, the density of bugs so severe, its about to form a bug hole, that nothing can escape, not even light. *UPDATE 1* Did I wrote the game is VERY early access? I was wrong. The game as a whole was enjoyable even with the minor bugs. This game is a buggy mess. I cannot recommend it to anyone in the current state. Many bugs are very obvious such as the setting to pause when combat starts simply not working at all. Combat itself is a huge mess too. The game is designed to want you to set AI tactics for everyone in your party and then just let them fight automatically, but then your characters will do extremely stupid stuff like running into a table and not going around it, just standing still in a running animation, unless…

While the game certainly offers some pleasant variations to the adventure RPG genre, the current level of game breaking bugs make the game unplayable at this time (Nov 2025). For example, after one (tough) combat my party, when leaving the area, was teleported miles from where the combat started and high above the map where we fell and substained broken legs and other injuries. Now damaged and far from anywhere and every direction seemed blocked by mountains and rivers. The group eventually…

This game certainly has great potential, and the changes and improvements they've made since Blackthorn Arena are very noticeable. There are more weapons and armor, and while the crafting system needs some streamlining, it's more accessible than before. I appreciate the updates they're making, but none of that matters if you can't save your game after turning off your PC and lose everything the next day. I've lost my progress six times now, including all my armor and component collections.…

Trading is broken and you won't be able to make profit from the beginning as a merchant. Instead of merchant which is hard to earn profit from trading, be a thief and steal everything or craft armor. The early game is a grind. The whole game tends to feel like a grind, but the early game is the worst about it. What is Age of Reforging: The Freelands? On the surface it's a cRPG, but below that it's a rather deep and layered game. There are some technical flaws with the game. Moreover though, it's a game with huge potential. The combat system alone is worth it's weight. It feels grounded and exploratory. Sandbox RPG with Kenshi vibes. Not as free as Kenshi. But not as empty and aimless as Kenshi. Main story, side quests, npcs - all is there. The world is sufficiently big and diverse. Somewhat technically junky and buggy, but I have not encountered any major issues myself. Combat is very fast, so manually controlling all the party members is a chore. I've read several reviews for this game saying that its too hard, maybe unforgiving, and that's true for the first couple of hours. The problem is, I suspect, a lot of the players struggling haven't played Kenshi, which also has a pretty steep early learning curve. You need to be a rat in the early game, avoiding most fights, cheesing money making opportunities, and getting fighting experience joining one-sided battles between two parties. Very good game once you give it a chance. there was a lot of love put into this, the longer you play the more you realize that. it has lots of features and open world stuff. It really scratches the need for fantasy open world adventure. the isekai kind or the sandbox kind. lots of class options / unlockables, lots of compainions and much more. it also has a main story that you can follow but you could easily put 100+ hours into it without really touching that too much. the minus point i give…

The bugs are something that prevented me from going back to the game plus the games feels unpolished from alot of borrowed ideas of older games, and now adding generative AI to replace drawn artworks with the promise that you wont turn it into AI slop? I can understand proper use of AI in the right context, but this reeks of just replacing assets with slop. Add an AI disclaimer to your store page, if you take that leap you better be honest with your customers.

Love the game, reminds me of unmodded Skyrim, it has issues for sure, but the free elements are there. You can skill every day skills like cooking, smithing, alchemy. Your stats increase depending on your actions, you're not limited to any class or weapon. If you have enough experience you can technically get every skill and passive. Class building and theories are so much fun, seeing what would work, what wouldn't, all the different benefits of the various elemental spells, summons etc.…
