60 of 114 · most liked firstI picked up this Russian made RTS game in the Steam sale. The game is a tactical level RTS that follows the the 9th Company of the 345th OPPD through 9 years of warfare in Afghanistan against the insurgents and yes it is the same 9th Company in the film 9th Company. The game even has clips from the film. The campaign is good but short and you do a nice variety of missions. The tutorial at the start is comprehensive enough for you to get a quick grasp of the controls. It also has some nice…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The only game about the Soviet-Afghan war that I know of.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Drunk purchases are always regrettable
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very very good game, it's like Threates of War but may with a lil less quality, but it's a very good game at 10€, and a very good RTS game aswell.Recommend it to all RTS fans.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I just wish this game is a bit more polished with less bugs. There are a whole bunch that you will meet when you playing though the story and if it happens you have to load from preivous saves. The graphics for this game is actually pretty good with movie clips in it too. The music is fine but not super. The control is a bit wacked but manageble. The fight is actually really fun. You have to fight enemy of over whelming numbers. IT's a RTS that in will keep you pretty busy. I guess for a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros: ✅ I can only recommend this game if you buy it on sale (I paid 2 euros). Otherwise skip it. ✅ Cool ragdoll physics. I loved destroying buildings and watching enemies fly 20 meters into the air from artillery strikes.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great RTS game. I enjoyed every aspect of this game. Some of the missions were actually difficult to complete, especially when you get ambushed while trying to clear a mine field. Some might find the fact that your reallly need to keep close watch on all your troops movements at all times, especially if you split them up into 2 groups for a 2 pronged attack, a bit tedious, but I liked having to be constantly aware of my soldiers because you never could tell where the enemy would hit you next…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →buggy as hell, couldve been a great game. I tried to make the most of it, as evidence by how many hours I put into the game (~24). Theres alot of effort put into the detail but not enough in the actual mission. They have sprites of the movie characters in game which I thought was pretty cool :D
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →has a good potential yet the balance ruins the experience. the afghan militias are highly trained soldiers that simply overcome our highly trained soviet neighbors which I find pretty unrealistic. sure they were trained by US special forces, but does not immediately turn themselves as US special forces. I was thinking more of outgunned, outnumbered angry militias and we get to assault, or defense, but instead I get to face expert shooters sometimes even better than our friendly red army.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is basically a Russian made Close Combat. Production value is more like really early Close Combat games, but the structure is there, and it is pretty good so far. I have done basically the tutorial, but I think it will be enjoyable, especially for something that was in a bundle and thus very low cost. 7.5/10 in a bundle for <US$1 5/10 at full price, but You will want to be a big fan of the RTS/close combat genre, and appreciate the quite rare Russian invasion of Afghanistan setting.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →would be great if i could get past the training mission... can never complete it because the video always disappears leaving the mountainous background and no way to see the characters
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty good Afghan Civil War game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A competent RTS, though without much appeal other than the theatre. Not great, but definitely not terrible.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →9th Company: Roots of Terror is a good game. As a low budget game it has its lot of shortcomings but the overall feeling is positive. The controls are a bit difficult to master and the camera movement is a nightmare, making command and control of the your units quite difficult. The sound is supposed to start at a calm and boring theme and goes to a sudden agitated attack one when you make contact with the enemy, in order to convey the feeling of a low intensity guerrilla war - where dangers…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its a great game, a little difficult but very fun. I wish there was there was a new version with multiplayer
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No keybind settings as far as I can tell. Seemed like a decent Squad-based RTS in terms of the mechanics presented in the tutorial, but I was not even able to finish that because I cannot rotate the camera (middle mouse, which for me is bound to Alt+F4 and I'm not rebinding my system settings for one game). PROS: -Nice squad based features (get "on" vehicle, get "in" vehicle, ammo count per weapon, automated ammo sharing among squad) -Varied weapons on each soldier, viewable range, could use…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Suprisingly good for the price! If you're a fan of the Men of War or Theatre of War series, than this is definetly a must buy! Very good graphics for the time it was made (the characters from the movies the game is based on are in-game). Lacking multiplay, but the campaign is enjoyable. 8/10 would reccomend to a friend
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Way too many crashes :(
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Liked the movie it was made after and I like the game too, as it conveys a lot of that dark humour and tension from the movie (btw, you can see the whole movie with subtitles on YouTube) The game takes your company of Soviet rookies through their tour of duty in Afghanistan, by making it through a bunch of missions. You can only take a certain number of them on a mission, so it's good to rotate guys a bit, to give all the experience they need for the hard final battles. It has nice pre-battle…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Russian budget game is a special category :) Pros: Afghan conflict is rarely seen in games. Based on real events and includes clips from a good movie"action documentary" about 9th company. Quite detailed micromanagement of individual troopers and their inventory. Somewhat realistic combat tactics. Cons: Poor vehicle AI, they drive all over the place. Very bad camera control. Bugs - the game crashed several times and I'm not able to finish 3rd mission, I have cleared required village but the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game sucks. The tutorial is too difficult. I bought it cuz I watched the movie. Also the game cover art reminds me of airfix minature soldier set style painting. Cant dive into action. UI design is very bad, control is messed up. Soldiers dont do what you told em. What the f? How can you fight isis like that? No wonder Soviet lost afghan war. :( http://jobbees.net/img/catalogo/productos/MAF-72000.jpg
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →great and nice pick for a RTS realistic wargame that focuses on relatively obsolete Soviet-Afghan war. Game is very fun, playable and atmospheric and it resembles some sort of mix of "Close Combat", "Men of War" and "Company of Heroes" games. Graphics and effects are not breathtaking but are totally nice and acceptable and sufficient for this kind of game, missions and enemies are tough and camera and controls are little janky, everything that you could possibly want from a slavic game! nice…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a discount Men of War I really want to like, but can't. The game's theme is great. I am all on board with cleaning bandits with the Soviet Army. Soldiers and tanks have high quality models. The environment is also highly destructible. These are the positives. The negatives: Enemy fighters are extremely lethal, it kills both the immersion and fun. Soldiers lack the animations. They always stand on open ground under fire. In Men of War your soldiers also do this, but in that game you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A broken, buggy mess of a game that's actually pretty interesting and fun-ish to play. Just follow Samz's guide in the community posts and you should be ok. I'd say its worth the low price for a war that few games cover.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I would only recommend this game for the genre and setting - RTS about the 9th Company in the Soviet-Afghan war. The gameplay itself is not to my liking ... just couldn't get used to the game mechanics, controls, AI and UI. It felt more like it's in alpha build stage. There's a funny typo in the main menu (see screenshot below). The movie was great though! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2845790268 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2845789787
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →1) i need one (1) movie about the soviet-afghan war that doesn't completely suck ass (looking at you 9th Company. christ), extra points for central asia pov 2) an "imitation game" remake (new movie) starting years earlier set in poland 3) a balls to the wall weird as fuck "mouthwashing" adaptation
unlabelledView post →Amazing.. 2009 game but still fun in 2025. Feels like developers were the same as those behind Men of war... with some features that should be in Men of war too. For example, tell soldiers to automatically take cover by pressing "E". Also, the ability to see special item and names of selected soldiers without having to manually open inventory is cool.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After finishing the first 2 missions this is what i can tell you about this game: Its a very unique RTS game with some janky controls. we need to thank the russian developers for making such an iconic rts as western game developers would never make a game where you can invade another country as the USSR. Gameplay wise the controls are a bit sluggish and the troops like to do their own stuff even though you commanded them something else. This is pretty common for russian games as they lack the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →abysmal. rendered unplayable by bugs
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It isnt a VEEEERY bad game. I give it 6/10 Only buy this if you are a rts player and like men of war style. Graphics do their job If you got it for 1$ like me its totally worth it Few bugs Its kinda hard to make the soldiers do what you want. IF you are a RTS player from games like men of war and theatre of war you will may like this game
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Now I know where store troopers are made... If you like old school war sims, you'll probably like this. It's cute in an "I'll never play it again" way. It reminds me of what life was like before you could change keybindings in games. Though, I have to say, for a game that came out in 2009, it's a bit lacking. It is exactly as you see in the screenshots. If you loved the movie, you might like the game. But it's a bit slow for me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great idea for a game; only game about the Soviet-Afghan War. Good war for a game- who doesn't want to root out insurgents and battle Mujahids in the mountains? And it is kinda fun. However, it is very poorly done. First of all, fun fact- all Russian soldiers in this war had crippling mental illness- also a little known fact. They don't take orders, they don't stay in cover, they refuse to heal each other, and they have an interesting tendency to walk right up to a Mujahideen machine gun nest…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What can I say. It's a curiosity since I don't know of any other games that revolve around the events of the Soviet-Afghan war, but the execution is a little muddled. I probably didn't give it the attention it deserves to warrant a proper review, but since it's not my kind of genre to begin with I personally can't recommend it, though if you see it in a sale I daresay it'll give you a few hours of entertainment. If realtime strategy in real world events is your thing - probably worth picking it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →if you are looking for a good RTS game, dont buy this.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Developed by Lesta Studio and Новый Диск and published by Strategy First, 9th Company: Roots of Terror is a real-time strategy game that draws heavily from the Soviet-Afghan War, placing players in the role of Soviet paratroopers during one of the conflict's most recognizable military operations. Instead of creating a fictional war story, the game attempts to capture the harsh realities of combat by following soldiers from their demanding military training through the fierce battles that…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Mediocre strategy game with terrible controls.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Looks like it has great potential but no way of configuring controls yourself and even worse is you can't rotate the camera unless you have a 3 buttoned mouse!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Blitzkrieg like.... ПРИВЕТ ОЧЕНЬ КРУТАЯ ИГРА ! COOL GAME ! Really weary nice! it like Blitzkrieg =)…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Doesn't work...
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game is ok but its a bit fiddly and slow paced for the average RTS gamer its some what realistic but unfortunately realism does not always mean something will be fine like in real real life you scout ahead locate the enemy set up then attack the enemy however it takes a while to set up for the actual engagement and its over so quickly that its not very enjoyable a lot of the time you can simply send a hind in to engage then send infantry in to mop up whats left it has decent mechanics…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its the only game where the tutorial is harder than the rest of the game (On easy~!!!) and the camera fights back. I want to recommend this for the shear amount of detail going into the destruction mechanics, the squad tactics, the goofing around achieveable with cheats, and the popcorn-movie esque style the entire plot is based around. Its like an indie developer made Men at War! But, the camera is a ♥♥♥♥♥. Otherwise, get this game. A strategy like this for a price of 1.99 only comes around…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →don't buy this game. could not play due to stupid map bug in the first ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mission. zoomed out and got a picture of google maps
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i was quite frustrated at first with the camera controls. commented to someone about the great cut scenes and found out about the movie.. well I found the movie rather entertaining and it reinspired me to try the game. now that i figured out the somewhat wonky cam controls, Im enjoying the game. a refreshingly different wargame giving us a look at Russia's "Vietnam"
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sucks the maps glitch out everytime I move the Camera
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has so much potential. The main problem with this game lies in the camera controls and soldier controls/selection. Unlike Men of War, they are just too hard to control. Especially with the soldiers not being able to stop moving/cease fire. Soldier skills and inventory system is unique. Highly customisability makes the game easily replayable without getting bored.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game crashes after completing the first objective and I have to restart. This repeats.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →6 bajillion dead jihadists
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Complete c*ap this game is, seriously. Dont waste money on this pile of dog sh*t.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Grab it on a sale. While the game has a good few bugs (I've made a steam guide to help avoid them.) I personally enjoy this RTS, keep in mind that the store-page is inaccurate as the non-linear mission structure/morale system and a few other mechanics were actually cut and (like a good few steam games) the description seems to be out-dated. What you do get is a linear, generally pretty decent budget RTS with some good ideas brought down by clearly being rushed out the door which is a shame as…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game is all with time..and i hate that...so you have just 20 min too do that..or you loose...♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥...but the movie whas good.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is in my opinion a good rts, it is somewhat buggy, has ♥♥♥♥♥♥ pathfinding and one dreadfull stealthmission Other than that the setting is interesting and most missions are great. All in all like many russian games it has its quirks and its clunky but if you can overlook that and like hardcore rts then its great.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →basically ghetto men of war.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fantastic game. A hidden treasure. Excellent atmosphere. If you like tactical games, this is something you will love. A little short and an occasional bugg (mission events not triggering) can force you to restart a mission from time to time, but an excellent experience. To add to the historical atmosphere of the 1970s, when you succesfully finish a mission you get rewarded by the Soviet anthem playing, Recommendations.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I mean, it'd be nice if in the tutorial they told you how to use grenades...
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pro: Low system specs OK music & graphics Great concept Con: Expensive $10.99 CDN Need more polish Iffy controls Subpar AI Overall: 5/10 -1 no cards, -1 price, -1 controls, +1 concept = 3/10 Grab it if you lke RTS games when this is on sale for 90% off or in a bundle.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →just not for me i wouldnt say dont buy or buy it its just not for me . i dont have the patiance to work over the tutorial of this game and the controls seems wierd to me maybe later i will change mind about this game .
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is the biggest ♥♥♥♥ I ever played
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not going to write a long review because I didnt play it for very long. However from the short time I did this is what I thought. Game play and concept isnt not too bad, for an old game it has some play value for fans of the genre. Having spent alot of time playing Company of Heroes I just couldnt get into 9th Company. I would recommend this for people who perhaps dont want to pay as much for company of heroes, or want a first time game of Military RTS to see whats its like. There is loads…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →9th Company is the kind of game that sadly isn't supported anymore by the people who made it, at least I don't think so. Which means there's a few bugs that might totally piss you off when you can't finish a mission cause it bugged out. But that aside, it's such a cool game and really pulls you in, you care about each man you got. Soldiers carry over from mission to mission and when they die they're gone, so it matters what you do and what choices you make. That said, it's not too expensive, so…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really enjoy the game. Yes there are some AI issues but all and all it is a fun game and worth the ten bucks.
