Different from what I've played before and different from what I was expecting. Maybe it's my fault for just taking a glance at it, but I was expecting some kind of typing game. Instead each enemy is a mystery when first encountered, and you actually have to guess what it is (by guessing the word). At first I thought it was boring, but the game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game helped me learn a new japanese word... KUSOGE! Yeah don't play it. I already did the legwork for you.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fun little JRPG with some distinctive mechanics. Word guessing is one of them, as is a timed-hits-like feature. Occasionally, some enemies or obstacles may even be integrated with the plot, such as "puzzle" bosses that query the details of a mystery. Mechanics are pretty solid, plot is reasonably interesting, music is quite decent too. It's a little tedious having to discard gemstones one by one when you run out of inventory space, but that's about my only complaint. This game's not the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →99 Spirits is an overwhelmingly anime game. It even includes the untranslated Japanese version! The game is divided into visual novel, and turn based strategy segments. While I am not an anime or visual novel fan, the gameplay half of 99 Spirits is what had me intrigued. Basically the player moves their character around on a chessboard sort of thing, trying to reach objectives, stores that sell items to improve stats, or dialog scenes. This phase of the game is turn based, and enemies will…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I would love to recommend this game. The problem is that this game suffers from so much pacing issues. Points where it just takes such a long time just to one action. There's also the fact that the enemy can have multiple chances to hit before you even strike. If you really want to try this game get it from either a bundle or when it's very cheap. It's just not worth it at full price.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I found this game to be overall very enjoyable in short 30~40 minute bursts. The character design is excellent and the music is great and the storyline and dialog is very well written. It’s not the sort of game you spend 4 hours a day playing, it leans more to the casual “waiting between college classes” side of gaming. Highly recommended for anyone who is a fan of youkai (妖怪).
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So let me get this straight, you happened to be a young swordswoman who is traveling across Japan with a fox demon of some sort in order to find her dad while killing other demons possessing common household objects. I guess that sums up the basis of the story. I don't remember how long I have spent with 99 Spirits because I mostly played it offline when my internet was down for a period of time, but I still have not finish my first play through so keep that in mind. The combat system pretty…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →99 Spirits was one of the first games I ever owned on steam, and I remember sinking a few hours into it and going "Yeah, that's pretty alright." That pretty alright energy has been building for some time, and I finally decided to sit down and give the game my full attention. Unfortunately, it wasn't worth the time. That is not to say 99 Spirits is a bad game. Far from it! The combat flow is basic but fairly unique, requiring you to guess the names of the monsters rumpelstiltskin style to deal…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is fun, engaging, maybe even straight up addictive, and I don't even notice time going by when I play it. Then why wouldn't I recommend it? It is prone to effing crash randomly during battles. So if you forget to save every so often, which a game like this tends to cause one to do, you can lose a lot of play time. It is frustrating that a bug like this isn't fixed for as long as this game had been out now. If you don't mind that, then this game is an easy recommend. I, however,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly I think it's quite a charming game! I like the sound and visuals for sure, old school JRPG stuff, and the gameplay is pretty inventive, not just typical cookie cutter stuff. Worth a look, I believe!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →From the from what I can see the game is the love child of Pokemon and Inuyasha. The game crashed mid battle and whiped out my progress. Advice: Save at any chance you get.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I got this game a long time ago in one bundle or another and just recently decided to try it out. The game looks like it could have been interesting with the mechanic of having to identify your foe before you can defeat them, but the combat system as it exists in the game is so poorly implemented that it makes the rest of the game unplayable for me. From the other reviews it sounds like it has a decent story, but the combat is so bad that it's not worth it to me to suffer through it for the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An enjoying story line and great characters has this game bringing me back constantly. It is all told through text, similar to a visual novel, but they aren't long segments either. A great balance between story-telling and playable interactions. It even has Japanese voices for the characters, for those who enjoy it. The lovely art style is easy to the eyes too. The unique gameplay is refreshing at first, but it does get a bit tedious later on. Pacing does become an issue, but the battles can…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Okay at first the game will be a bit off but you kinda get used to it. The whole difficulty is the matter of finding and guessing the item. The game in itself is enjoyable but the guard times sometimes set me off. A 9.3/10. It had it's fine moments. I'll put that much. Fine story, great use of it, and a nice lot of characters.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →...very quirky Japanese game... lots of text, with an odd board-style movement (when you do get to move) - and a fighting system very much turn-based, in your face dungeon crawler style (but with added timing blocks and trying to guess the name of the monster via using floating words to figure it out before you can kill it) - as bonkers as it sounds... would work well on a Surface Tablet due to low res / windowed gameplay and incredibly basic controls... worth a punt!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First of all, this is very obviously an Anime Game™. If you can't handle the ugu~, get out of the kitch-nya~-n That said: 99 Spirits is a very 90's and very PC-feeling jRPG. It features a fairly interesting idea for a combat system that is extraordinarily simple and, until you get the upgrades given to you at about an hour in, extremely tedious. Once that's down, though, it's smooth sailing and you're in for a pleasant time. I assume. The game crashed on me when I alt-tabbed and I lost all my…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I... Love... This... Game! This is so cool. It's a wonderful combination of a RPG and a Visual Novel, that has you play a female role and save her home. I have yet to finish it, which demonstrates the complexity of the plot and how long it is. As I've mentioned in a previous review, I love RPGs that get me hooked on the story and VNs with more than one ending. This game has BOTH. Not only does it have both, it has side quests left, right and centre. Not only that, it has tons of achievements,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You can fight pants. 500000/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There is a JRPG game called "99 Spirits", where you uncover the identity of enemies by selecting the right words. Can't harm them if you don't. Typing of the Dead is as it sounds like: write to fend off the hordes. I haven't played Lexico, but it looks interesting to me.
unlabelledView post →Cute little spelling game that eventually spirals into a repetitive game loop. The style is so unique and interesting that I give it a low, but positive recommendation.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →so much talking so much crap.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I hate it. I really really hated it. The story is boring, the monsters are like 70% the same monster every time. Thank god I ended it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Did not like it much. RPG elements are pretty thin, story and characters are OK, but the gameplay itself is mostly for fans of Scrabble, Hangman or Bookworm, puzzle-like with word guessing and some action/timing thrown in, got repetitive quickly for me. Combined with mediocre graphics and sub-par level design just made me bored before hitting 1 hour. The music is great and enemy designs quite clever and fun though!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I got 99 spirits but a witch ain't one. 99 spirits is a JRPG with a unique combat system of needing to guess the creatures identity (the monsters are the spirits of everyday household items) before they can be slain. This involves a quicktime like system of attack's and counters which is serviceable but repetitive. At a later point you gain the ability to capture and use enemy's to attack in combat and there is an involved storyline rich with Japanese cultural references. Good -unique combat…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Audiovisually nice but as just about every other review has said the battle system is very poor. Thinking about the repetitive nature of the battles (which take ages) it's impossible to convince myself to play any further.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →99 Spirits has a lot of spirit in that it tries do something different but falls flat on its face in trying to do so. The storytelling is generic albeit interesting with a unique flare to it which ties into the battle system....and here is where it loses points....how do I even describe it...you do series of actions against monsters until you get them to the point where you can name them and then defeat them....Sounds obtuse? Well it is, and although I applaud it for trying something different…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →99 Spirits is a fun and unique puzzle role playing game with many hours of gameplay. You take on the role of the heroine Hanabusa who has received the one and only weapon that can defeat the Tsukumogami. The Tsukumogami are everyday items that have come to life, in order to attack them with the sword you must first name what they are using the hints receive. The field in the game is grid based but can be used to your advantage if you want to avoid battling the Tsukumogamis that wander around on…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Innovative spelling\turn based game that just doesn't work. Also, the dialogue is rather lengthy on top of the extremely repetive combat. Its worth a shot if its cheap and you can tolerate impossibly hard games towards the end but I can't recommend this game where there are millions of other games worth your time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I liked the first end of the game, the Azure one. The other two weren't worth the time at all. This game is not recommended for most of the people, really.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At first, I was put off. The opening is very long winded and without feeling any real connection to the characters, it was like pulling teeth to sit through it all. Once I got in further, and started to grasp the gameplay, I was hooked. The art style is pleasant, as well as the gameplay. I haven't experienced another game like it, so if you're in the mood for something a little quirky, I'd definitely give it a shot. Do be aware of crashing and glitches, though. (It's a minor burden, if you save…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Interesting combat concept and a style worthy of Okami though not particularly intellectually challenging. Thankfully the combat pace picks up towards the end.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really love visual novels, Otome, anime styled games... and this i grabbed on sale. IM SO GLAD I DID..!!! ITS SUPER COOL. its very orginal in the sense of doing puzzles and stuff. i find it enjoyable. i would recomend grabbing this game on sale or not. :D
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty boring game in anime style that revolves around one gimmick—identifying items' names possessed by demons and then slaying them. Initially seems pretty fun, but it burns out very quickly. I endured on just because I wanted to see if it expanded on the basic idea, but it really didn't. I'm sorry guys. :(
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →garbage game, only played because the cards are worth a lot. Easy achievements too.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a weird blend of JRPG/interactive novel with an unconventional word-matching/twitch combat system that falls flat. It's grindy, it's not fun to play, the graphics are mediocre, but they want $10 USD for this. It's really not worth it at all. At least it's not an RPG Maker highschooler fan-fic?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →99 Spirits is a very charming Japanese indie game. It combines elements from a few genres including Visual Novels, Turn based battles, lite character progression elements and even monster collecting. The first half of 99 Spirits consists of the Visual Novel cutscenes that progress the games story - developing the characters and allowing the plot to progress. There is no voice acting for these cutscenes but this didn't bother me because characters only ever speak in short sentances so it makes…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Undoubtedly the most unique feature of 99 Spirits is its battle system; it's probably not for everyone, but it is pretty interesting (and easy) once you get the hang of it. If you like the game's combat system and are still trying to decide whether to get this game or not, perhaps the biggest issue is how you feel about "grind-y" games. It also helps if you like anime/visual novel-type games, or word-based games. Yes, the battles get very repetitive, and I've experienced crashes on a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →99 Spirits is an interesting RPG that may not suit everyone. PROs : - interesting story with nice & cute anime arts. - unique battle system utilizing reflex/reaction, short memory, and simple english vocabulary. - steam cloud, achievements, & trading cards. CONs : - battles are very repetitive and time consuming.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not really sure if I want to recommend this game. It's fun to play for a while since the combat has an interesting twist to it, but the narration of the story just feels a little bit dragging for me. Also, you get info-dumped on too many characters to remember right at the start, with none to little introduction to their personalities. But as I said, if your focus is not on the storytelling, but on the combat mechanics and so on, it's worth a try for a few hours.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was fun to play. The art was good, gamplay fun and the story was quite interesting. If you are into Japanese-culture, you should try this game out. :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game's story is amazing, the gameplay can get repetative and you need to grind at times, but overall the game is quite enjoyable
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Alright story, reasonably good art, but utterly ruined by its boring-as-hell gameplay system.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The gameplay is simple, but the combination of several simple gameplay systems, including twitch and vocabulary puzzles, is surprisingly more fun than you might think.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like it. I don't think this game is for everyone, especially as I admit at times the battles can drag on especially as some objects aren't so widely known to western audiences and the early game is very slow, but I like the story, characters and I find the idea of having to guess who the enemy is Interesting. I think upon reflection it doesn't tell the player that the abilities can be upgraded. If you like the idea of a Puzzle-RPG, I'd say give it a try. If not either buy on sale or avoid
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When your 10 hours (or more) save gets corrupted and unplayable: 0/5 When the game crashes: 1/5 When you forget to save game every 5-10 minutes: 2/5 When the game doesn't crash and you remember to save once every 5-10 minutes: 4/5 The story is comparable to an anime and the gameplay is interesting, but it has enough problems that I wouldn't recommend buying it unless you manage to get it very cheap.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The ideas/art are ok but... It got repetitive too quick for me... Very few RPG elements made it even less fun on the "long" run.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Get this if only it's in a bundle. Kinda feel like charades ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Press Z to attack an enemy to charge up a meter to get clues. Block enemy attacks with X to charge up a second meter that allows you to guess what kind of object it is. So far I've identified ghost pants, a ghost jacket, a ghost spoon, a ghost broom and a ghost scarecrow. That's pretty much it, no real tactics or anything. There's also some monster catching and training system later on. I don't know what that's about, just saw an achievement for it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Has foxes; Must buy.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a very interesting oddity, with a unique way of doing combat and and a very grand story. Taking place in medevial Japan, it's up to you to destroy all the pottery, tableware and clothing articles for justice. By that, I mean possessed objects, just like the start of Mother 1. Pros: Incredible soundtrack Genuinely interesting characters, your actions can dictate how they act and even save or end their lives Lengthy story No two people will ever have the same loadout Multiple…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awful. I think this should be billed as En-ema* rather than Anime, enough said.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →99 Spirits was probably a humble bundle pick up. A word typing game with pokemon elements and strange object spirits. Seemed rad and I was hoping to have some shin megami fun. Never played it.
unlabelledView post →So, I tried playing this game back in 2015, but apparently I only played it for 16 minutes before I ended up shelving it. Fast-forward a decade and I randomly decided to try it again. This time round, I quite enjoyed myself. I'm glad that I read some of the reviews suggesting that you play this game on casual, because having to constantly identify the enemies every time you encounter them would have been quite annoying. The combat was very unique, you first have to attack the enemy to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very charming game that decides on a theme and runs with it. The focus is on the "tsukumogami" (a type of yōkai that possesses a specific object) and the main story involves finding a way to stop the chaos they create, primarily by visiting a number of ancient gods. The game really goes all-in on the "traditional Japanese" aesthetic, which is reinforced with the focus on different types of yōkai, shrine gods, and (in the original) the gameplay focus on Japanese writing. This incredibly…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →99 Spirits, as well as the original Japanese version, entitled Tsukumogami, is mainly a JRPG mixed with visual novel storytelling. The story setting revolves around the main female protagonist fighting against the Tsukumogami, which are basically possessed everyday objects. Besides that, it also has plenty of supporting characters and villains. Both the story and characters are good, as well as the music and visuals. There’s also 3 different endings that you can unlock, and plenty of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an interesting take on a turn based rpg. Before you can damage an enemy you need to guess what it is It can be anything from a box to a spear and it's very japenese like so there are a few japenese terms in here that you may need to know. Thankfully there is a good spirit index guide to help with that. You can also take controll of monsters and learn there abilities to use in battle which is a nice touch. The story didn't really keep my interest much i only played through it because…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have not yet finished the game, yet I can say, I had a whole lot of fun with it. I love the characters, the designs of 'em, the Tsukumogami and the whole story. So yeah, I can recommend it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an interesting JRPG/puzzle hybrid game. It is fun, has a nice story, and the characters are well-done. Would recommend, though perhaps wait for the discount to get the entire Collection.
