Ys I & II Chronicles+
Developer Nihon Falcom
Long, long ago, there was an ancient kingdom called Ys which prospered under the auspices of two heavenly Goddesses. Over time, the kingdom came to be known as Esteria, and its divine history was largely forgotten by all but the descendants of those who once preached the Goddesses’ will. From the Steam store page

Just make a Ys I & II Chronicles+ for every single game ever made. Even bad games. Make a Ys I & II Chronicles+ for Cheetahmen. All games.

It would be weird to do a session and then have to skip the next two Sundays due to preparing for, and then attending, Furnal Equinox. Also, surprising no one, I wanna play Pokopia... 🥺

unlabelledView post →I do recommend this game, but the work done for this port is pretty bad. The game logic is tied to your framerate, so for any modern gamers running the game on a high framerate, they'll quickly find that bosses are doing attacks at ridicilous speeds, and at the highest difficulty, impossible to dodge. If you are playing this game, i implore you to limit your framerate to 60 max. Anything higher and you will have a bad time.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun fact: this isn't modded. Ys I&II Chronicles+ has a hidden Custom soundtrack option just by adding files named x_{XX}ys{1/2}.ogg to release/music, with XX being the track number. You do have to switch to custom every time you open the game though as it switches back to Chronicles on exit.

unlabelledView post →These two games are... perhaps not THE best (that, for my money, would be the Turbo CD version released back in 1989), but certainly the most modernized and accessible versions of the classics Ys I and II. The reason I enjoy these games so much is their unique action-RPG gameplay... you don't kill enemies by mindlessly whacking your sword at them, but rather by running into them, either off-center or at an angle. Attacking them head on will almost guarantee pain on Adol's end. A fair warning:…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What is Ys I & II Chronicles+? It’s the most recent remake (2013) of the two first games from the Ys franchise: Ys I: Ancient Ys Vanished: Omen (1987) and Ys II: Ancient Ys Vanished: The Final Chapter (1988), bundled as one. It’s also widely regarded as the best way to experience those titles. Where is the action? As soon as I started playing Ys I for the first time, I was expecting an experience similar to games made with RPG Maker, judging by the pixelated graphics. When I got to my first…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While these two games are two halves of a full game, I'll review them as their own things. If you don't want to read all of this, in short - I recommend the games if you're fully aware of their age and different gameplay style, don't expect much out of em. Anyways, here we go: Ys I Ys I is a game somewhat fond to me. I played through a bunch of its ports and versions, including PC-88, Master System, PSP Chronicles. The version I was going through now was Chronicles+, how do I feel about the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ys might be a very very hidden franchise, but it doesn't mean that the games are awfull. The game's soundtrack is 10/10; The game's graphics are 9/10; The game's history is 8/10; The only thing is that the game doesn't seem to guide correctly where you need to go, sometimes you gotta se a video of some sorts to know what to do next. It's a awesome starting point if you want to learn about the rest of Ys history, i recommend this game dearly, it's one of the best Ys.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I will preface this review by saying that Ys 1 would probably get a thumbs up if I didn't care about chasing the 100% achievements. It's a nice passable story on a nostalgic trip of a game. However, as a player who values an enjoyable path to 100% completion of games, this was a terrible experience. The requirement for boss fights on nightmare difficulty removed any positive feelings I had towards the game. I hope this was just a remnant of a bygone era and more recent Ys games have…

Once you get used to, it's good (just remember to save right before leaving the city in case you end up dying). I loved how the music got me going and interested in the lore and in all other games. Also, 1's last boss! Crazy!

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just beat Ys 1 after 7 hours on normal, and it was an experience. It was fun but had some odd design decisions. For example, giving you a ton of gold and exp at the final dungeon, but having a low max level in turn. And some of the bosses were horribly designed. Still don't know how I beat the final boss, I'll probably never try playing this on nightmare. Still despite everything I'd still recommend it. It had some grating moments, but overall it was a worthwhile experience. Was pretty fun to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really like this game and honestly can't really explain why. This was my first Ys game, it's old as all hell, some of the bosses are kinda BS and the game has the old school cryptic nature to it... But it's charming, I eventually grew to really enjoy the bump combat, and the soundtrack bops... So yeah. I recommend this game if you plan on getting into the Ys series, play on Easy, prepare to occasionally grind and maybe look up a guide on where to go and dive in, playing this makes the rest…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ys I & II Chronicles+ — Review Ys I & II Chronicles+ is where it all began — the foundation of everything that makes the Ys series so beloved today. These two games, remade and bundled together by Falcom, are old-school to the core: simple, fast, and full of heart. But even after all these years, they still have that special spark that newer action RPGs often miss — a pure sense of adventure. This collection includes modernized versions of the original Ys I: Ancient Ys Vanished and Ys II:…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ys I is a short and pretty old game, and it's still reasonable fun and good to see where the series originated from. The gameplay is pretty uninspiring given its age, with 90% of the gameplay just running into an enemy to attack them (but not directly center). The story isn't all that exciting either, but that is also to be expected of old games (what do you expect from games from 1987). However, the dungeons themselves were actually more fun than I expected. The final dungeon in specific…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Score: 3/10 Preface: Before diving into this review, it’s important to remember that Ys I originally came out in the late '80s. Many mechanics and features we take for granted in modern RPGs simply didn’t exist back then. This game laid the foundation for the entire Ys franchise, so while it may feel dated in some areas, it’s still a fascinating look at where it all began. Story: Extremely basic, even considering the era it was originally released. It sets up the world of Ys but does so with…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ys 1 Ys 1 is a very old game, originally released in 1987. But this is a remaster from much later. Ys is a series of action games and despite having some nice charming NPC characters, the game's focus is most definitely on the action. It's story is pretty thin. "Adventurer arrives at cursed island and wants to protect the people from the monsters that suddenly appeared out of nowhere. Also someone stole all silver on the island, how curious." That is basically it. It is enough. To fight the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →why the ♥♥♥♥ are there two achievements for molesting a girl ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Otherwise it's a mildly interesting experience for someone who's never played a game with a "bump combat system", and the soundtrack is great. Nihon Falcom's habit of giving each minor NPC a bit of personality is also appreciated. Also the antagonist's name is hysterical.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Second fun fact: Ys I&II Chronicles+ has code for an unused MIDI BGM Type. Apart from not being selectable, MIDI works properly, it's just that it looks for files named m_{XX}ys1.ogg which don't exist so the game stays silent.
unlabelledView post →Great game. Beautiful pixelart, some banging tunes, very unique combat system and some brutally difficult bosses.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →THIS GAME HAVE GREAT STORY BUT THE BUMP SYSTEM IS KINDA MEH TO ME BECAUSE MY FIRST YS GAME IS YS:THE OATH IN FELGHANA (PSP) AND I THOUGHT YS I HAVE THE SAME COMBAT MECHANIC. P.S : THE FINAL BOSS IS BRUTAL. BEATABLE BUT REALLY HARD EVEN ON NORMAL DIFFICULTY.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Genuinely one of the worst games I have ever played. A complete insult standing in stark contrast to everything I have come to expect from falcom. obtuse dungeons and item placement, aggravating if not downright unfair and outrageous enemies and bosses. And a story that is worthless by all modern standards, a terrible start to the franchise
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was advised to skip all Ys games and instead start with Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA. I chose to start from the beginning anyway. I was promised at least nice music, nice story, and garbage dated combat. Instead, I got great story, great music, and great combat. Yes, the combat of Ys I & II Chronicles+ is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! If future Ys games remain as good as these two, then I have finally found a new franchise to call a favourite A beautiful story with endless optional dialogue that brings…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The charming character writing, occasionally excellent art, and pleasantly brisk overworld combat is completely overshadowed by the bland and confusing dungeons, the underbaked equipment and experience systems, and the awful, awful boss encounter design. Truly the worst fights I have ever endured. I'm happy for the people who enjoy this, but I just couldn't.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Finished Ys I & II from the Ys I & II Chronicles+ Steam version 2 years ago, only thing I remembered compatibility wise is that I think I had to set my monitor settings to a lower Hz as it had game speed stuff tied to FPS. Great games tho.
unlabelledView post →The bump system combat felt weird at first but after getting used to it, it was surprisingly fun and unique. The soundtrack is fantastic and despite its age, the adventure still feel engaging from start to finish. The game can be frustrating at times, especially when figuring out where you need to go next and some boss fights are much harder than the rest. I play this after Origin and it's nice to see some of the characters related to the characters from Origin, definitely recommend to check…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of the worst designed games i have ever played when it comes to character control. The bump attack system is good for nothing but giving you a serious case of carpal tunnel syndrome the first hour you play it with a keyboard. If you enjoy Ys series i would seriously recommend skipping chronicles and playing the newer better made versions where character control is more fluid and less painful on the wrists and hands especially when playing with keyboard.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have been hearing about ys 1&2 for year, the 8bit versions and even the remakes always turned me off... just reading about the bump combat felt wrong... BUT.. actually i was wrong. I just finished ys1 and, yes the soundtrack is great but also the story and the whole world, its all a bit old school but a nice short adventure to play a few minutes in the evenings before going to bed. Even the bump combat i like a lot, its really fun running around slicing through enemies without thinking. And…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"My life is so much brighter with you in it" Classic! The bump combat remains undefeated and it's really fun. I remember the mysterious atmosphere and how beautiful the graphics are. It’s a good remaster that retains a classic aesthetic with some quality of life features but remember; it’s an old game, so don’t expect a brilliant storyline, but it’s interesting enough (and surprisingly fun) to see it through to the end. The soundtrack is incredible, and I recommend playing both games…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a comfortable journey from start up until the final boss. Let's put that to the side for now. Similar to tank controls, bump combat has never been an issue for me. I can understand how people can't gel with it, but I always felt like the Juggernaut as I crash through enemies and turn them either into pixels, or in this game, splatters of gore. It is so rad. I want to give a shout out to my new friend @Doomlord. He helped me mod in the PC Engine Soundtrack for this game, for 2…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Combat style is not great. Boss battles are ridiculously easy or nearly impossible. i love the Ys series, but this one is not good.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thirteen (13) years after my first game, I returned to YS I, having completed everything except finishing the game on "nightmare" difficulty. Today, I finally accomplished that goal, and wow, it really was a nightmare, especially because of two truly terrifying bosses in Nightmare Mode: the vampire and the final boss. I spent hours on it, but I came out on top. What about the game? I love the bump system where you simply bump into enemies to attack them and they can do the same to you. To avoid…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The first in a long line of games in an awesome series. I've played through every Ys game over the years, and it all started with this one when I was a kid playing with my buddies on my TurboGrafx-16. Cool story, great characters and a killer soundtrack. I still say the TurboGrafx version of this game has the superior soundtrack, but the remixes of all the music are still great in the Chronicles version. If you wanna play a true classic that spawned decades of sequels, you gotta check out Ys…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Both games were short, cryptic many times, and hard, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself throughout both Ys I and II. These games have very strange combat, aptly named "bump combat", where you literally just run into enemies. In Ys I, you have to be precise where you attack on an enemy, but in Ys II, you kind of just go ham on everything. If I had to compare these two games to another series, I'd say that they're much more difficult versions of A Link to the Past, with far fewer puzzles.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm almost 40 and never played Ys. After watching the Happy Console Gamer gush about his love for Ys I decided to try it. And man, I've been missing out. It brought me back when I was a kid in my room playing old jrpgs and games. The simpler times. The music, the sprite work. It was beautiful, I actually enjoyed the bump combat, it was interesting! Now if I can forget about that Bat boss...sheesh
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Ys series is amazing. This is the first game in the series. It has the PSP/Saturn graphic and UI updates, but it still uses the bump system for battles. Some people do not like that battle system, but it is easy to learn. This game is a classic in every sense of the word.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good, but for the love of all that is decent, don't use the config to lower your refresh rate, set your actual monitor's refresh rate to 60. Otherwise the last boss will have Adol travel at half speed moving down or right. And if you move diagonally, prepare to move at glacial speeds.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a classic. It's a shame there aren't more games with the bump combat system.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Two little games I can't help but reflect on months after playin them! Ys I and II are very much small adventures with arguably dated gameplay (I enjoyed it still) but these games feel like very strong starts to the series. It really does manage to keep that classic PC-98 charm still even with the QOL updates they've done for this version and honestly I don't feel I should say too much more bc I feel that ruins the welcome surprise I got to enjoy playing it, enjoy your time with this one!!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very dated game but I actually love the bump combat! The only problem that I had with this game is the navigation. I literally would have no idea where to go and had to look up guides but super well worth it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its ok for a game of its age but the final boss is just unfun i cant even imagine how hard it would be on nightmare i gave up even after i found out lowering my fps from 144 to 60 makes it easier(possible) but i dont want to grind attempts when its just not fun to fight.
