Yi Yi
Each member of a family in Taipei asks hard questions about life's meaning as they live through everyday quandaries. NJ is morose: his brother owes him money, his mother is in a coma, his wife suffers a spiritual crisis when she finds her life a blank and his business partners make bad decisions. From TMDB

Today it was a movie and dinner. We saw the Taiwanese film “Yi Yi” and then went to a Chinese buffet restaurant.

The whole POINT is getting YI YI and PEEWEE'S BIG ADVENTURE side by side
neutral · AI labelView post →Watch Edward Yang's Yi Yi (a masterpiece!) and try to keep track of how many fucking characters that movie introduces that you're still able to hold perfectly straight in your head. It's gotta be nearly two dozen. A miracle movie.

Weirdly emotional watching the Jackass boys doing their thing for possibly the last time. #LastFourWatched #LetterboxdFriday #Letterboxd #FilmSky #Films #Movies 🍿🎬📽️🎞️

positive · AI labelView post →Time for another one of my patented BlueSky hot takes: Yi Yi is a good movie!

neutral · AI labelView post →Very cool: director Isabel Sandoval has shared this photo where she’s with Tu Duu-Chih, the Taiwanese sound designer of Yi Yi, Millennium Mambo, Happy Together, and In the Mood for Love – he worked with Sandoval on her new film Moonglow. Thanks for all the inspiration during the years, Duu-Chih!

Started my 2026 Criterion Challenge with Yi Yi, a perfect movie. I liked Marty Supreme a lot more before I heard Josh Safdie's thoughts on the ending. #lastfourwatched #letterboxdfriday

neutral · AI labelView post →Completely sold-out screening of YI YI, a movie I hadn’t seen in a long while. Still one of the greatest.
positive · AI labelView post →It's not like listening to Bach's St. Matthew Passion makes it hard to listen to anything else, or watching Yi Yi made me skeptical of putting another movie of. But after Absalom, Absalom! it feels like I'm scared of reading anything else b/c unconsciously I feel like it will be a waster of time.
positive · AI labelView post →After a long wait, finally, I got to rewatch the restored version of this Edward Yang film. It's rather a mellow film in comparison to his other great films like A Brighter Summer Day, Yi Yi, and Terrorizers, but I still enjoyed it. It's definitely worth giving a chance if you love Edward Yang.
positive · AI labelView post →Saw the remaster of Yi Yi in the theater for the 25th anniversary and that movie has everything. It's graceful and expansive, uninterested in anything tidy, instead giving us the chaos of life with everything entangled in and rhyming with everything else.
positive · AI labelView post →Finally watched this. I have a bad, masochistic habit, which is that after watching a movie I think is a masterpiece, I will check out the most negative reviews of it on Letterboxd. It's often a shocking experience. However, I'm not going to do that with YI YI because I think my head would explode.
positive · AI labelView post →Happy 26 years of Edward Yang's Yi Yi, I thought that this was an emotionally heartfelt and beautiful movie that really ended up resonating with me in a lot of meaningful ways that I felt something, as it dives deep into the limitations that come with our own perspectives in life through our desires
positive · AI labelView post →Yi Yi by Edward Yang, as that movie really ended up resonating with me in many ways that I felt something, as it tells a very interesting and emotionally heartfelt story that dives deep into the complexities of life and who we are as people and it always inspires me in becoming a better person.
positive · AI labelView post →Me holding up a copy of Edward Yang’s Yi-Yi, “This is a crucial, CRUCIAL film.”
positive · AI labelView post →just watched “Yi Yi” (2000), a movie that took so long to click, but when it did I could immediately recognise it as fucking genius. slowly layering in element after element, structured like a life but with all of life always present, it’s a really great film!!!!

positive · AI labelView post →if you’re in NYC you have two more chances— at admittedly annoying and inconvenient times— to see Yi Yi at Lincoln Center’s movie theater and I urge you so strongly to do so. I’ve never actually heard or seen a whole audience walk out of a movie completely silent before

I have ONE FILM TO GO and I will have completed this whole wild challenge I am PEAKING (also I know some people who know my deal will be like “Hayley how have you only just watched Yi Yi!” I feel the same way about Yi Yi as I do about every Edward Yang film I’ve seen which is: Not good!)

unlabelledView post →Here's a shot from 'That Day, On The Beach' by Edward Yang - of 'Yi Yi' fame. A more accepted 'real art' type film-maker.
unlabelledView post →Yi Yi (2000) In its exploration of so many fully realized characters, this film feels every bit as vast as a Lord of the Rings installment—rivaled only by Fanny and Alexander. The viewer is placed in the standpoint of God, observing impartially from every angle and distance. (4/5)
unlabelledView post →Yi Yi is a fascinating movie. It’s such a realistic view into the lives of people that feel painfully human. Sometimes dull, and mundane. They don’t add music to make a scene more exciting. You just linger with the natural noise. Three hours long though, but luckily I can have an intermission.
unlabelledView post →I'm not saying length is the only thing I take into account in my movie-going life but why would I spend 162 minutes watching the unknown One Battle After Another if at the same theater I can spend 173 minutes watching the consummate masterpiece Yi Yi

unlabelledView post →In the Mood For Love (like Yi Yi, my all-time favorite film) sits in ambiguity, yearning, and incomplete-at-best resolution while things keep inexorably moving forward in a way that feels truer to life than movies almost ever accomplish.
