unlabelledView post →I often joke about watching modern movies the way we watch silents. All cinema 1985 to 2025 will be represented by HOME ALONE, ACE VENTURA: PET DETECTIVE, and FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE. No other movies were made, no other genres explored. The end. It would be ridiculous but that’s Silent Movie 101

unlabelledView post →Saw a screening of ‘Farewell My Concubine’ last night for the first time in at least 25 years, and I had not remembered how angry that film is. I completely missed the point of it the first time around.

unlabelledView post →HSB asked me a fun question. What movie do I wish I’d bought on DVD, because it didn’t seem to have transferred dependably to streaming platforms. I got it down to 3. Farewell My Concubine. Time Masters, and Amateur (1994) to young when I watch them, but they stuck in my head. What would yours be?
unlabelledView post →Farewell My Concubine is an incredible 3 hour movie. A sweeping epic and opera (dramatically, not musically) about Chinese opera. I do not know how to describe it. It's a historical epic, and also a love story. But it is not romantic at all. And it's kinda queer? But in a very sad way.
unlabelledView post →My parents (they have movies they like but aren’t particularly cinephiles) have an in-house micro cinema at their active senior community. Last week they saw Farewell My Concubine (dad: very sad) tonight they saw Seven Samurai (dad: this is a long movie)
unlabelledView post →Who has seen Farewell My Concubine? I love that film. That tumult? That authoritarianism crushing Art & personal freedoms? Yeah…
unlabelledView post →one of my best catches as a student was watching this at the Hyde Park Picture House circa late 93/early 94 (also caught Enter the Dragon and Farewell My Concubine at the same venue). This film still kicks ass. May try to catch it again on upcoming UK trip. www.theguardian.com/film/2026/ma...

unlabelledView post →I minored in film. I honestly was hoping more would be great, but I read a lot of good film theory. Farewell My Concubine and Red Sorghum were depressing but excellent. Bicycle Thieves and Mädchen in Uniform too.

We see one movie per week and meet on Zoom every two weeks. Tonight we will be discussing Farewell My Concubine (1993) and Flowers of Shanghai (1998)

unlabelledView post →Not quite as vibesy as this but it was nice when I went to see Farewell My Concubine recently with a large Chinese audience, half of whom were translating the Mandarin-with-English-subtitles film into Cantonese their friends.
unlabelledView post →It’s not uncommon for people to love Farewell My Concubine, seek out Peking opera, and come out pretty confused at how one gets from the stage performance to the film.
unlabelledView post →It reminds me of the film Farewell My Concubine (starring the transcendent Leslie Cheung, rip). Nothing ever changes with the human race, we just never learn.
unlabelledView post →Just rewatched Farewell My Concubine, which I hadn't seen since I was a teenager when it first came out. Amazing what I didn't remember/wasn't able to appreciate as a young viewer. What a timeless, stunning film.
unlabelledView post →Tonight I received as a gift the new Criterion 4k/Blu-ray of Farewell My Concubine. I'm so happy! It's one of my all-time favorite films: beautiful, poetic, devastating. I feel so many things every time I watch this. 📽️ #filmsky

unlabelledView post →Farewell My Concubine 📽️ beautifully tragic and unnerving. all the performances are good, but by god, this IS leslie cheung's movie. just like his character, he truly disappears into the role, and the way you can project his all too short life onto the narrative makes this all the more heartbreaking

Also need to watch Hathaway’s Flash before the second movie hits theatres in NA. Still need to see Sinners are well, missed the theatre run last year and it’s been on my list since
unlabelledView post →An insanely beautiful period epic in the same vein as The Red Shoes and Farewell My Concubine. The period accurate sets were gorgeous, the performances were nuanced and riveting, and the editing had a style and pacing that perfectly synthesized the art of kabuki theater with film.

unlabelledView post →I haven't, but I've been meaning to for some time. Now that you mention it, I'll find time to watch it this weekend. I just know it's a great film. Kore-eda is known for his unapologetic realism. You should watch Farewell, My Concubine. Superb film. Leslie Cheung was sublime in it. You'd like it. 😊
unlabelledView post →The outlier film I watched (for several reasons—genre, it’s in Mandarin, length) is Farewell My Concubine, which was a revisit and probably my favorite film I watched this past month or so. But best moment? Tbh at would be Jackie Chan hanging off the side of the bus in Police Story (also rewatch).
