What people are saying
Mixed reception: praised for VR immersion but criticized for control issues and outdated hardware support.
Many players praise the VR immersion and scale, calling it a must-buy for space fans with VR. One user says the game was 'MADE for VR' and provides 'absolutely stunning graphics' with supersampling. [3][7]
However, numerous players report serious control and compatibility problems, especially with non-Vive headsets. Some say the game 'does not support any other controllers but the Vive controllers' and that it 'has not been updated to work with modern steam VR.' Others find the controls laggy or nauseating. 60 of 197 · most liked firstTL;DR: This is a very complex game that looks great in VR. There are lots of things that are difficult to get to grips with and lots of things that are complicated for no good reason but the overall experience is worth the effort. In-depth trading and empire-building, decent graphics, good combat, and a huge game-world make for excellent long-term game-play. ************************************************************** I don’t think that it’s an exaggeration to say that this is the eighth…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Where most developers would have given up and moved on to the next product, Egosoft has impressed by putting FOUR YEARS of effort into bringing X Rebirth's around from its rather disappointing (buggy pile of bad concepts) initial release by fixing what's wrong and heavily revamping features here and there. For example, they have largely removed the necessity of docking at stations, allowing you to interact with most NPCs from space, including hiring crew members (who fly in crew pods to dock…

unlabelledView post →If you have a VR set-up and the slightest interest in space games, you owe it to yourself to buy this. With an i7 5820k and an OCed 980ti, I can SS this to 1.8x and have absolutely stunning graphics. Controlling the game with the Touch controllers (Oculus) is a dream of finesse and subtle movements -- in fact, I have better control than with my X52Pro joystick which I've used extensively in other space games, including X3. Gameplay, while not as varied and broad as in X3, still gives you the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The great thing about the VR version of this game is that the Vive controls are excellent. It's flying finally done right. Essential flying actions - pitching up/down, acceleration (to any speed), boost, strafing left/right and up/down, going backwards, and rolling left / right can ALL be done seamlessly with one hand, and still with a bunch of buttons left over on that same hand. If other games still struggle to figure out how to do it well, the shame is on them. Sadly, the game itself is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is an amazing first crack at VR for Egosoft. They've really nailed it on multiple fronts and this could possibly be their smoothest game launch ever. The main draw for returning Rebirth fans is that you are actually sitting in the cockpit of the Pride of Albion. You are completely and totally 1000% immersed in the galaxy. You can see how humongous these ships and stations actually are in 1:1 3D. You also get a real sense of how fast you're moving through space. The new Vulkan-based…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game has not been updated to work with modern steam VR. Unless you SPECIFICALLY use the HTC Vive it won't work for you. Shame. It looks great but all I can do is look.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was so excited when Egosoft was working on X Rebirth VR. And now, the game is available, I'm disappointed. The support of VR controller is not implemented in a good usage for VR. In this game, the HTC Vive Controller act as a random and classic controller. And piloting the ship is very hard and non user-friendly. I can't imagine when I had to do some dogfight with those VR controls schemes. I thought I could move the hands of the player avatar like many other VR games and interact with the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Okay I really wanted to like this and it's not without it charm but the VR implementation here is far from perfect. The store page claims it supports motion controllers which it technically does but in the jankiest way imaginable. Also this isn't X Rebirth, its a new game with a new campaign, which I though was a bit misleading given the name. On the plus side the graphics are quite nice and flying around the stations is cool but overall my first impressions were pretty poor, frankly VR…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Warning, this does not work on the Oclulus Quest 2 using the Oculus Link. If you run it in the non-oculus build (you can run the game in two mode, one of which is designed for use with the oculus) then actually the VR is perfect, but the controllers don't function. If you run it in 'oculus mode' however, the VR is totally busted, with tearing, one eye being laggy and generally speaking visuals being corrupted. Also, the controller does not work well, regularly failing to notice I'm pointing.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So you take the grand scale of everything the X series has ever been, and add it to the VR space where space ships and space stations blow your mind as much as the sheer depth and complexity of the universe in which they stand. Writing a review for all of that isn't easy, the cliff is just as harsh in giving an impression as the one you'll face if you arn't versed in the ways and means of the tasks which the game presents. Frustrations is a meaningful word when climbing that cliff step by step…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm sure this game was brilliant at launch, but it doesn't support newer VR hardware. I tried to play on Quest2, but there's a left/right eye sync issue which makes it unplayable. The sync issue doesn't happen if you play the Vive version on Quest, but then the controller mapping is all wrong :-( Come on Egosoft, how's about a patch???
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I must congratulate Egosoft, they managed to create the first VR game that I actually do not recommend... I am a big fan of the whole X-series and I even liked Rebirth a lot, but asking 40€ for a game that's not even worth 20€ is just not right. I really hope the real X4 is going to be better and I'll most likely buy it but I am not sure if I would risk buying a VR game from Egosoft again. The gameplay: Instead of allowing the player to use their hands to touch, press or hold things in order…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →WOW!!! Where to begin..... that was an amazing experience, this game was MADE for VR. It's like a lost key that just fits. I thought I was done with the wow factor of VR, thought I'd seen it all, gawd damn, I was just proven wrong. I can't help but feel the game should never have been released on a monitor. Don't get me wrong Rebirth is a GOOD game, not amazing, but his HAS become a good game. Much to the credit of egosoft and the extremely patient fanbase. So cudos to you guys. I however,…

unlabelledView post →My new favorite VR game! Coming from someone that has over 1200 hrs in the original X-Rebirth game. I've been a fan of the X-Universe games since the beginning, this VR experience is exactly the way you would expect it to be in your imagination as you played all the titles. The controls are different at first, (hint; finesse) the controls with the Vive controllers become very intuitive. Take the time at the beginning to scan the stations as you practice with the controllers and realize how…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Does not support any other controllers but the Vive controllers. Rendering my Oculus useless. Got a refund.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For a game that was supposedly developed for VR there is little in the way of VR-friendly control available. I'm using a Valve Index, which apparently has too many inputs on it for the SteamVR version, resulting in unused buttons and duplicate mappings that make little sense to anyone even remotely lucid. After giving up entirely on using VR touch controls I decided to suck it up and go with the Xbox controller, only to discover the default mappings are equally incoherent and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Runs well. The first game for VR you can easily spend days in. I do not recommend the default controls. I am currently using a combination of joystick in one hand and vive controller in the other for targeting, interacting with menus etc.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So in this game's future of space travel, there would be a titty bar at every hyper space terminal and the occasional hobo floating out from the garbage disposal of every space station. Anyway, I'm only about an hour and a half in and just finished the tutorial and started my first job which was to pick up some clown who's late for an important job interview. So basically I'm a Uber driver in space, what would you call that a Moober or a Ubace. Anyway, again back on the game, I docked at…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just skip the VR version. the original game content was butchered for the sake of "performance" and make it it "VR friednly" for the motion sensitive players. A botched and watered down version of the former game where the SP campaing, the main plot of the game was cut along with 90% of the "on foot" content: the stations are void of life and the few NPC you encounter will be soulless husks with a 1000 miles stare. meanwhile in space, the number of stations and AI traffic was drastically…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Overall this is a good game, i have never crashed or found it in anyway unstable. Controls are comfortable. But it gets boring really fast. You can only control 1 ship, this is whats really ruining this game for me. doesnt feel like you achieve anything. Trading system was rather annoying with touch controllers...so i skipped that completly...turns out you can make cash without trading. not that you really need any cash. i like the X-series, specially all the different ships you can have and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The flight controls in this edition are so intuitive that I might prefer them to my regular HOTAS setup. No major bugs encountered, and all cockpit based interations are quick, efficient, and fun. This game still suffers from some of the design flaws that made X:Rebirth the legend that it is (Check metacritic, its one for the history books) but most of the enraging gameplay elements have been reduced, if not outright eliminated (See "Need to land on stations...ever). Whats lefts is a deep,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I dont usually do reviews but as this is an 'early access' game which I paid for I decided to. I also played a number of previous X games and enjoyed them. I am quite dissapointed as this should be so much better - it has so much potential and I so wanted to write a generally possitive review. Firsty the possitives - The x universe is wonderfull and nicely designed. its great to fly around in an has some really nice features and stuff (I wont say what in case you buy it) Some of the combat…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Seems ok so far. Using the Vive wands as controls didn't work the greatest for me. I found the input to be quite laggy, like my thumb would need to be in place for 2 seconds for the input to register. Graphics wise it seems ok, but I definately recommend using supersampling through advanced settings for best results. I was playing on high setting with 2.0 SS using an overclocked 980Ti. Would I recommend it? For the price, I'm not sure. If this is your type of game, I think you'll find it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →tl;dr- It's fun, and I have some notes and recommended mods at the bottom of this review to make it more fun. So this game has gotten a bad reputation that I honestly don't feel is warranted. As a long time fan of Egosoft's X series, I understand the negative feelings the fanbase had about the direction this game went, but if you look at it on its own merits instead of comparing it to the rest of the series, I think you'll find that it's actually a lot of fun! It does have some issues, but if…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I just paid 40 bucks to get nausea :( Thouchpad controls need sensitivity adjusters. I can't imagine trying to dogfight with these I would hurl.... and no roll configured- seriouly 40 bucks???
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Some things that are not made clear without doing your research first: This game is slow. The very first quest I was given took 15 minutes to fly to, using the boosters. I love exploration games but this really was just 15 minutes in a straight line, surrounded by background skybox on all sides. This remained fairly consistent as I continued to play, with very little in the way of action unless I specifically go looking for it, and then 5+ minutes of floating through intergalactic highways…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →(very early impressions) So the first thing to note is the game runs well. I have the settings high and 1.5x super sampling and its keeping a smooth frame rate and isn't causing any motion sickness. The vive hand controls are ok, but not what I stuck with. Swapped to Hotas and its feeling much better for me. Think this is mostly from my many hours in elite dangerous. This game isn't really up with elite in terms of physics or graphics, but its not bad either. I thought I was going to buy and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My First Impresions of Rebirth VR (Likes and Dislikes Alike) Well, for starters, it feels like I thought it would, after imagining what the original Rebirth would be like in VR. There are some things to like, I found myself grasping the touchpad controls pretty quickly, and even got the hang of fighting, more or less. There are a couple issues that bugged me, though. Firstly, pressing the one button to roll in one direction was rather... uncomforable. I'd prefer if pointing the pointer to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game doesn't support Index controllers. And the devs aren't currently adding any patches for it. A shame, because it looks like it would be a blast if it did.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →X Rebirth VR in 2022 What you get out of the box: Its a sandbox game: The game loop: taking on missions, upgrading your ship, exploring. later in the game, you will buy trade-ships for trading wares, or enter and captures ships, building stations and building finally an empire. + One Player Ship which you can upgrade and adjust to your preference + Good Flight-model + Nice Stations / meaningful traffic which adds to the atmosphere + DLCs included, + Good Sound-design + Good Graphics + Good…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent VR title. Have so much fun with it. I use the oculus rift controllers, and if you used to controllers, then you never want to go back. If you fly near a station, and speed up the shunk the feeling is sometimes like a rollercoaster. Also the new quick menus a great, to have control about the game much quicker. (also know available in X-Rebirth normal edition. If you have VR, and you like space games, this is a title you must have. Also the space and plot a different than the other…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was someone who preordered xrebirth when it first came out. I was mad, very mad, at that release. in fact i have refused to preorder ever again because of it. That all aside I wanted to try it in vr, I was not disappointed. It was about as expected. the only thing of note is decide what controls you are going to use and only activate those. do not mix and match as it confuses the heck out of the games input detection and causes it to be very frustrating to setup. once i learned this, the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Haven't gotten to much playtime yet. The tutorial could be bit easier. Especially since this is a big and complicated game, I thinks it's even more important that the tutorial makes it easy to get into. It ran fine on 1.5 SS, but I still think the graphics where a bit unclear, even with AA on. The vive controllers worked fine, no lag as I've seen some people complain about (maybe their specs are not high enough?). From what I've experienced the game was fun, the few batlles I had were fun and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really like this game. The new engine keeps a solid frame rate. Everything looks great and there's plenty to do. Plus it has my new favorite feature ever, the 2d/3d mode swap. If you need to walk around a station or are just getting tired of wearing your head set you can just pop it off and set it on the desk and the game will go to a standard view on your monitor. It's genius and it works and I love it. All things considered this is a solid space game with plenty to see and do.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm changing my review now. Before I couldn't run the game on my Oculus Quest-1 but I figured it out. First thing you need to remember - do not start it with your desktop icon, go to Stream VR and run it from there and your Oculus controllers will work properly then. I spent a couple of hours in game. It's hard to learn all the small details, but once you pull yourself together and get through with it, the game seems really cool. I love the controling system! It's really smart and handy! I'll…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Makes me feel nauseous where other games don't. Has pretty average graphics. But the worst thing for me is that it's basically just X Rebirth but in VR - the interface and gameplay are pretty much identical with no changes made to take advantage of the medium. I bought it because I support Egosoft and want more X games - but if they do another VR game by the Gods they better put more effort into it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Currently rating as don't buy, but will revisit. I have the rest of the X series. The base game was poorly executed at launch. The game to this day retains a mixed status, and generally had just a lot of silliness in it. I'm going to get out of the spaceship and randomly loot people's boxes at the spaceport, and those people aren't going to care and so on. It tried to do the RPG thing, but didn't execute it as well as other games do. The VR navigation of UI's with tracked controllers is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hurrah, X in VR not played much yet but it works well with Vive and xbox360 controller combo....early access but runs smooth. This is just what VR needs, a game from developers with a good track record which is built on a strong base of quality and offers a depth of game play not abundant in VR titles so far.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent VR title, still has issues like lighting differing in both lenses, but it's a huge improvement over the base game. With an i7 3770 / 1070 the game was playable, however did have performance hitches. With an i7 7700K / 1070 (stock clock speeds) the game runs beautifully. So it's more about your CPU than your GPU.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tried to play Quest 3, I see the joypad, but the buttons don't work. Keyboard and mouse support are also poor. Just buy the game to see the first scene and some space, and that's it, there is no way to control the game. Broken game for some reason on steam, don't buy it
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a mess, that is generally worth getting on sale, if you have a gamepad nearby(or use Vive or Oculus), and are ready to spend time on a title that is hell-bent on trying to drive you away from playing it. It does have cool moments in it. This is an experimental version of an experimental game, made in 2017, when VR was more niche than it is now. At the core of everything is an interesting and a fairly deep world, but it is buried under a pile of strange design decisions, badly…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't know, I kinda like it, flying the ship is fun and everything is there but everything is such a pain in the ass, the only thing I've mastered is exploring stations. I'm almost 15 hours in and I've literally made no progress, I'm always loading older saves because I always hit some wall in what I'm trying to do. Last mission I tried they wanted me to travel 1250 units of whatever which would take me like 20-30 real minutes altering with boost until it runs out. I'm guessing I don't…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sadly, don't believe "oculus rift" supported - it doesn't include the "Rift S" for the controllers it is a total flop. Nothing works launching the Oculus version doesn't work, toggling settings doesn't work. if you have a Rift S just don't bother buying.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sigh. I'm always super conflicted about the X series. But I think this game has won me back. The nearest thing I can compare it to is Elite Dangerous VR, and although it doesn't have the same polish as Elite, there are a LOT of things to be said for for X Rebirth VR. I'm big on immersion and this is a list of things that Rebirth has really done well in that department; - The stations in Rebirth are large, sprawling structures and there's a lot of variation when compared to Elite. - Ship…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In early access, so far it is a solid game. It takes a little bit to get used to the control scheme. Have to dig through menus to get to tutorials, just like other versions of X. Still have not figured out how to change key bindings therefore I cannot roll my ship when needed. Other than that, the mechanics are there, it shows a lot of promise and it is fun to play. Definitely worth the money if you are into a sandbox style space simulation and the VR is very stable.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game does not properly support the index controllers. It "thinks" its the vive controllers. They must fix this before I buy again. The game is pretty though.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Elite Dangerous players: if you disabled Steam generic gamepad support for ED (e.g. to get various joysticks to work with that game), it seems you'll need to re-enable it for this game in order for it to detect gamepads correctly (at least ones that use the Xbox 360 controller driver). Anyway, this game's controls--which I'd consider a major part of a game's first impression--do not transfer well to VR. This is a complex sim with a lot of functions, and the only reasonable way to provide…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →X Rebirth, after four years, is still a terrible game. The addition of VR makes it a far more immersive mess of a game, but it's still a trainwreck. Wait for X4, whenever that's supposed to come out.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game works great on HTC Vive. game got outdated graphic ya doesnt matter im here for the VR experience and it actually more fun playing this in VR comparing to elite dangerous. how to run this game smooth in VR Allow Asynchronous reprojection and turn off Allow interleaved Reprojection. beacuse outdated graphic whit gtx 980 you can Super sampling your Vive headset around 2.6 no problem
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game has potential , but with no interest from the developer to update the game for the modern VR headsets, i would not recommend it to anyone. Tried playing it with XBOX controller and its worse than you expect, cause not all commands are on your controller and you need to use the Keyboard as well. I wish they added an option to remap the controls to your current sticks. I have a PS VR2 headset on Steam VR. Too bad no interest whatsoever from the developer for this nice game!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →VR headset is not required to play this. 2D mode works fine. In case you wondered. Though it's quite questionable if there's a reason to play it without VR, even though It has a lot of differences from the non-VR version. I'm not a VR user, but I found one unintended way to use it. Since it was optimized for performance which is critical in VR, it less requires less computing power for the same FPS as the non-VR version, so I'll play this one as a "lite" version of Rebirth on my laptop with…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Does not work with the Quest 2 setup, I tried looking up help online but could not find anything. If anyone has useful resources please link them in the comments as I and others want to play the X series in VR.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The 5h on record I spent mostly in the controls menu trying to figure out how to make this work in a halfway accepltable manner. It's a terrible default setup. So terrible, that it was impossible to even navigate through the menus to change it. Save yourself the hassle and just don't buy it. The way you have to awkwardly point your finger while pressing a button at the same time instead just letting me press the button in VR is beyond usability. It feels like nobody has even tested this. And if…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is better because of the VR. I wish they would do this for X4.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like this game. I have been an X fan since X2 series. I do not like losing hours of playtime to stupid bugs. This game is rife with UI bugs. Save often if you don't want to be losing playtime due to bugs.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've really been loving the game in VR. I played the Non-VR version quite a bit, but never entirely connected to it. But now having a much greater sense of presence really increased how much I enjoy the world and what's going on in it.
