What people are saying
Mixed reception: praised for style, criticized for short length and clunky combat.
Many players compare Woolfe to American McGee's Alice, praising its dark gothic art style and atmosphere. However, the game is widely criticized for its short length, often completed in under three hours, and its clunky combat and platforming. [3][5][13][26]
Some players appreciate the story and varied gameplay, but others find the dialogue cringe-worthy and the game unfinished due to the developer's bankruptcy. The controls and hitboxes are frequently called out as problematic. [7][10][32][33]

60 of 196 · most liked first5/10 Clever design, great potential game theme. Sadly, however, the game is completely screwed up. The stiff game operation, unsmooth game experience, characters will return to the position of animation after animation, only two characters in the whole game have dubbed. It's really hard to imagine that this is a 2015 game. The gameplay in Wonderland barely makes the game worth mentioning, but the broken gameplay almost makes players feel terrible during the game. It can also be said that…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not a bad action platformer to be honest. The controls and mechanics feel solid, the visuals are nice, and it has a nifty little story to it. My only gripe is that the game seemed rather short. I've read it was supposed to be longer than this which is a shame but still worth checking out IMO!

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wow, this game's as bad as it's good. I absolutely love this dark fairy tale setting and Red's misanthropic attitude, the graphics are neat for an indie game and puzzles are nice, but all of it has no value because of awful implementation. The biggest issue is stiff animations that make moving around and fights (most of which are mandatory) absolutely non-fluid. Then, there're poor game design decisions like fall damage. Have you ever seen a platformer game where you lose health after each…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Woolfe - The Red Hood Diaries Presentation: This game looks gorgeous with its goth, Victorian & steam punk style(to me it looks a bit inspired by American McGee's Alice) it really has the look of a AAA title. The Sound design is also good. No complaints here. Gameplay: Woolfe is a 2.5D platformer with some switch puzzles and hack and slash combat. The platforming while most of the time is okay, not that challenging at all, collision detection can seem vague which can lead to frustrations.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An awesome game that tells the story of Red Riding Hood but in a way nobody told you ..(i wont spoil it) but i tell you is nothing as this story was told to you during your childhood ..is different in many many ways ...is an awesome game to try and play ...and see something that can be called an alternate timeline of Red Riding Hood ..have fun and enjoy !! and remember this is not a FairyTale !!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I almost wanted to recommend this game for full purchasing but I can't for many reasons. The first the plus side: The graphics and feel remind me of the American McGee Alice games and Woolfe does an absolute wonderful job pulling this off. In terms of music, story telling, and game play feel. The checkpoint system is pretty forgiveble. That's the pluses. The minus's is that this game felt very "rushed" with hit box detection of foes and platforms and figuring out what killed you and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →they tried to make something like McGee's Alice, which always seems too ambitious, because it's always a bigger piece than you can eat. but eventually this game failed due to bad controls and ugly graphics and animation.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Short and clunky game. Can be finished in under 3 hours and ends on a cliffhanger. Mostly basic platforming with linear progression but the lack of depth perception makes the platforming awkward when the camera pulls back and the stage changes briefly from a 2D environment to a 3D one. Combat is lackluster with only 3 different enemy types. The combo moves unlock as you progress but none are more effective than just spamming basic attack into the mobs.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Red is literally the female Batman. The brooding, the voice, the “I-work-alone” energy. I wouldn’t really recommend this one in 2025 - it hasn’t aged gracefully. Back in 2016, it was kinda cool, but time has not been kind. I actually bought this game years ago because I was obsessed with American McGee’s Alice, and this looked like it could scratch that same dark fairy-tale itch. Spoiler: it didn’t. It honestly feels like the devs had a dream, some caffeine, and maybe £12 left in the budget.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Woofle seems heavily inspired by Alice:Madness Returns which is always a good thing, and the level design, gameplay and art style is terrific. The story builds up and suddenly fizzles out as the game abruptly ends. I was expecting much more than it actually delivered, taking about an hour to complete. It feels like an early access game that got abandoned after the first level, so I'd advise against buying it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Finally I managed to get this for 0.99 Euro and thats all it worth truly.. It was on my list for a while now but man... 3 hours of total game time? Wth? This is really a small amount of content.. feels unfinished.. I can recommend it for 0.99 Euro but not more.. Horrible controls which are caused by fixed camera view, no mouse controls and respawn points are too rare.. Combat is annoying until you get the hang of it.. but won't be much better even after that..
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this cheap on a sale, and it's not worth it. Poorly optimized, screen tearing, a story that TRIES to be "Alice: Madness Returns", but can't pull it off. Horrible combat. Bad platforming. Hard pass. The ONLY thing this game has going for it is a decent character design for the girl. Btw, this was the only game the company made before shutting down.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I mean I hate to say it, but this game is super mid. I remember seeing this game back when I was in high school; however, as cool as the aesthetic is, its cringe worthy dialogue and incessant rhyming really gets me. So play this if you like the Grimm aesthetic, but just know the gameplay is middling and dialogue can be a reason to side with the Big Bad.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Besides art style and lore(the part that's there at least) this is not worth it whatsoever, it's unfinished, abandoned and buggy. Wasted potential at its finest.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I usually say that if you have to die to understand a mechanic then the game is designed poorly. This game contains plenty of those moments. It's a gothic and dark take on the red riding hood fairy tale. Woolfe industries have taken over the world replacing humans with robots and being a generally bad fella. That's all I'll say about the story to not spoil anything. The story is dark, weird and not for me but I do see why it would be for someone else as it's well produced. The combat is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is an alright game, but... I loved the concept; it shares a similar idea with American McGee’s OZOmbis. Additionally, I appreciated the visual style, heavily inspired by American McGee’s Alice: Madness Returns. However, there are issues with this game: Firstly, why does Red Hood talk like an edgy 14-year-old teenage girl going through puberty? It doesn’t fit the character. Secondly, the hitboxes and balance are, well, imbalanced. I don’t understand why an enemy hits me when I’m in an area…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Prons: ~ The atmosphere is really dark/gothic and I really like it. ~ Great voice acting. ~ Great character/level design. Cons: ~ Game is 2.5D like with a fixed camera so you will definitelly misjudge some jumps or when it comes to dodging certain boss mechanics. ~ The character doesn`t have a stickiness when grabing ledges. You actually have to double jump to grab them. (That`s what I did, at least.) ~ Combat is clunky ~ You will unlock certain combos but to be honest only the AOE smash one…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Horrible controls, no depth perception, terrible combat and respawn points.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When I saw it on the store, it really caught my eye. It's always refreshing to see a new take (usually darker) of the stories of old. But the game is just awful. You can summarize what is wrong with it in "lack of polish". Everything that it tries to do, does it wrong. The combat is really wonky, sometimes you hit enemies, sometimes you don't, and only being able to do special attacks 3 times until you gather more mana, makes it a total waste. The platforming is horrible, floaty, and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of the worst, most unintuitive platformers I've ever played. The floatiness of Unreal 3 always makes for a frustrating experience (see also: Alice: Madness Returns) in which you are constantly sliding off of objects or missing jumps due to awkward perspectives and placement. But unlike other platformers made with the same engine (again, Alice: Madness Returns) there is a shocking lack of polish to Woolfe: The Red Hood Diaries. Here is a partial list of things that I deeply hate…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Inaccurate and spongy controls. During jumps, railings, ropes or similar things are often in the way, which leads to the character's sudden death. The game also runs rather poorly despite a suitable setup. All in all, a rather frustrating than entertaining experience. If I hadn't already had the game in the library for too long, I'd get a refund.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →combat is repetitive and frustrating, 95% of deaths are due to one hit kills even on easy, level geometry obstructs platforming and movement, the story is told completely through cutscenes and voiceover narration, and the writing is laughably edgy
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Let me tell you a tale about a game called 'Woolfe', a reimagining of Red Riding Hood Perhaps it had the potential to be innovative and deliver an experience that is really good But little praise can this reviewer truthfully muster For a game that ultimately proved rather lacklustre It had really great music, and it looked fairly pretty But the platforming was so so, and the combat quite sh*tty Let down by fighting that was even more wooden than Pinocchios toe The enemies were dull, and this…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You are Amanda Seyfried, and this is a retelling of Red Riding Hood. You aren't really Amanda Seyfried, but that's what my notes say. "You look like Amanda Seyfried, and the game certainly tries to give Red Riding Hood a bit of her swagger." So unless my memory is completely wrong, it must be true. Combat is moderately awful, but the platforming is mostly satisfying. There's also something really enjoyable about playing the classic fable in a more mature way. I guess I long for more Alice…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →can i recommend a game with atrocious combat and a rushed storyline that doesn't end in good faith? no will i do it anyway? yes. while the game is horrible with unresponsive combos (those hitboxes are a thing of intrigue) and the game basically doesn't end after a rushed short second and last chapter, the writing and artsyle do push it to 'consider getting it while on discount' territory. imagine if alice madness returns and shadow the hedgehog had a child, this game would be that child. the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Woolfe is... an interesting game. Clunky, yes, and feels a little like a Grimm spin on American McGee's Alice. But it was promising. And then the studio went bankrupt, so you're left sort of feeling like you're wandering through someone's broken dreams. The premise is that there is a dystopian city and a young woman (Red Hood) must navigate through its dark sides to learn what happened to her mother, who is no longer with her, and her father, who died and apparently his death was hastily…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Although the graphics were pretty good for an indie game, it was hampered by horrible controls and terrible hit detection.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →3 hours of game.... IMO its too short and story is not finished soooo i guess its not worth its regular price.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While the story itself caught my interest and it had a style similar to Alice Madness Returns, I wouldn't recommend it. I tried forcing myself through two hours of this game just to give it a chance but the in game lag, combat, too easy falling damage and glitching are too frustrating. This game isn't worth $9.99. I bought it for $3.00 off of Humble Bundle and still feel slightly robbed.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is my first time writing a review so I apologize if most of my points are vague. Im writing this directly after completion of this game and I definitely would say this is not a good game, not horrendous but definitely bad. I originally bought this game because I enjoyed Alice Madness Returns many years ago and this game, based off the steam page, seems to have a similar premise, therefore I was mentally comparing the two throughout my time playing Woolfe. The game is in fact similar to…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Once upon a time, in a dark and twisted fairytale land, a little girl in a red hood set out on a journey of revenge. She had a cool axe, some decent acrobatics, and a tragic backstory. Unfortunately, she also had a game that felt like it tripped over its own cape. Let’s start with the good stuff: Woolfe is visually stunning, with a dark, gothic art style that brings its world to life. The atmosphere? Absolutely nailed it. The music? Hauntingly beautiful. The premise? A fairytale revenge story…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Timers. Yet another game ruined by the undying plague that is timed platforming. A very pretty game at that. Not an hour in, already lost all desire to see what's around the corner. Pity.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't bother, there is much better things to do with your time. If I consider how much I get paid an hour then the time I spent, I feel like I should charge to play. I would rate as 3/5 but not recommend. Basic the game was not finished, so much time and money of the game was spent on the graphics and images which are outstanding, but the game play feels amateur, rushed to get the game published. I know the devs went bankrupt and funded by kickstarter. Note I played on Steam-Deck and went to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Being a fan of American McGees Alice I saw similarities with the characters' face and the combat and wanted to give it a go. The story follows Red Riding Hood on a journey to discover what really happened to her father. The combat is hack n slash with a dodge roll to get out of situations, there's a lot of puzzles, jumping and ledge climbing and the art is nice too. The only issue I really have with the game is that it's 'to be continued' and there was never a sequel made and it leaves…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is not as bad as people say, it's a quite original hack and slash puzzle platformer with creative story, world and characters. The gameplay is quite varied. The combat is a bit clunky, and no mouse is supported, but if you can get accustomed to this, it's quite an enjoyable game, full of checkpoints to save your progress. Recommended for the fans of the genre, and quite honestly a bit underrated too, give it a try ;)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Knowing the tragic tale of the dev team behind the creation of Woolfe, I do not have the heart to judge it harshly. It is a flawed but fun platformer. Pros: 1) There is some really cool level design in here, especially in the latter half of the game when you go to a forest region. 2) The game constantly changes things up so you're not doing just one thing repeatedly - there's puzzles, fights, chases and stealth sequences. 3) Even if the voice acting is a bit flat, Red seems like a cool…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There's a lot of passion and artistic value here that I appreciate, the art style is lovely. Now for the bad news; although I would love to give this a good review, the gameplay simply lacks too much. The visuals are grand, the aesthetic is great, but even if I were to view this as a narrative game, then unfortunately the plot can be picked apart quite easily, and being accompanied by embellishing poetry, it's in the end not telling much of a story. I do commend the voice acting and music.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game isn't particularly bad, in my opinion. I am, admittedly, easily entertained. HOWEVER, the save feature is pure bullsh*t. It's the worst thing I've ever experienced in all my life playing video games, and I am furious beyond belief that I paid actual money for it. The game only saves by levels. It has save points, where if you die, you respawn fairly close, but if you exit the game before completing the level, no matter how far along you are, you have to begin the level all over again…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really loved playing this game, I loved the original graphics and the music, the dark ambiance, the scenario...but...the fighting gameplay is not very good, your skills are close to useless for most of them... Which is still ok eventually, nothing super bad. Most of that was dying to: Terrible physics Terrible hitboxes Undodgeable attacks Instadeath attacks Instadeath environment Terrible camera placement This game felt like it was in alpha and I spent the whole time frustrated and rageing during my recordings The music is short, looped and COMPLETELY out of place in the game itself, it just sounded wrong for the environment and what was going on. The story is told through Red's insanely annoying melodramatic voice…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Was a really fun game. Glad i got it on sale because its way too short to be worth the full price. Just so sad that the second part of the game was cancelled and the company went bankrupt. Otherwise i would have bought the other ones as well.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm recommending this game because for what it is, it is a good game. Graphics look polished, handles well (requires control pad though) and althought he music is a bit repetitive, it's nice enough. You'll see I have less than 2hr's play time, that's because that's how long it took me to complete it on normal. So the game is very very short. I'd strongly suggest getting it on deal so that you don't feel cheated with that. Especially as it ends with a 'To Be Continued...'
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can't bring myself to thumb this down. It's overall OKAY. Despite the incomplete story and the unoptimized/unfinished feeling to it all, I think some people might still enjoy it. I did, until I reached the forest level haha! That was a little dizzying and needlessly complicated due to the one perspective we play from in a 3D environment. The game also automatically used the wrong graphic card on my PC, and it was janky as all hell... I thought the game was just broken! But after 3…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game feels unfinished, it is short by itself game plays fine and is easy to finish I had only 1 problem with last boss, he did not take any damage, it looked like you cannot hit him too fast, you need to wait for his attacks to be done so he can take damage(played on hard) but ending really feels unfinished, yet still a good game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I found this to be very enjoyable for what it is. Unfortunately it was never finished and that is a shame. There are definitely flaws to this game. I don't find the flaws to be overwhelmingly bad. Maybe purchase on sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Rubbishy half-finished game that should never have been tagged as Action or Adventure. More like jumping simulator Platformer and fall-to-your-death simulator. Combat and boss mechanics are just weird. Hit-and-run strategy seems to work best, but combos are an interrupt affair as even while foes are getting pummelled they still manage to get hits in. Later levels involve massive chasms and yawning pits ... anyone would think it's the damned Mario Bros, jumping between clouds or some drivel.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Theme and aesthetics got me interested in this one and finally got to play. It is unfortunately not very solid i must say. Firstly the design and environment are good looking but ascetics seems about the thing got most realised. I got interested in character of Red and was kinda expecting a story like Alice games and there are crumbles of it but especially seeing the games story ends very abruptly and no character besides two has any voice work, it was not fleshed enough would be a generous…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An interesting game that could have been a lot more if things had gone better for the devs. It has a beautiful setting that feels similar to American Mcgee's Alice Madness Returns. It does have some issues with oversized collision meshes and sometimes the double jump doesn't activate but that was only really noticeable when trying for the "beat the devs" completion time for one level. It's a shame the game isn't complete (to be continued), I think a sequel with more modern game design would do…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun game, first play-through was abt 2 hours so short game. Combat bit janky tho
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Terrible controls and clearly takes so much inspiration from McGee Alice Madness games. Game is pretty boring. Little Red herself looks like Wednesday Addams if she was blonde.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a terrible platformer that, while pretty, is actually a terrible game to play. The pathfinding is totally terrible, the music is repetitive, and the controls are unresponsive and complicated. It's just a bad game. So, starting with pretty: It looks like a really motivated art team was put to work putting greebles on EVERYTHING, which makes for some really beautiful scenery. It looks pretty good, similar to other shovel-ware of the era, is using every bit of DX9 goodness it can squeeze…
