unlabelledView post →Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap. Because not only does it give the game *gorgeous* new presentation, but it also allows you to swap back to the original game's visuals and audio, and even works with the original's password saves. This is the perfect game remake specifically as a remake, imo.

Playing them with my family and learning english, mapping in the Miracle Warrior and figuring out proper builds in Wonder Boy... Good childhood memories, which are hard for me to find.

It's a colourful action platformer with an economy and ways to improve your character. 1/3

It manages to cram most of the game into 8bits, but is considerably easier… and encumbered with a nightmarishly complex password system. 😓

unlabelledView post →Ended up playing around with "Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap" on the Switch 2 again... This game looks and sounds so good. Makes me wish the underlying bones of the game weren't stuck in the late 80s. If only they could remix it to use a modern game design ethos...
unlabelledView post →Great art, great music, boring gameplay but a terribly executed remake that takes more steps back than it does forward. Long story short, after beating the third boss, the game takes a massive plunge due to changes to the original game progression that will cause people to be more confused than playing the classic game. In the least spoiler explanation possible, the developers took a special ability for the 2nd to last transformation and made it something everyone can use after obtaining a…

unlabelledView post →man, the presentation in this game is amazing, the artstyle, the music, its all great and clearly made with love, but the game is simply not fun, it plays EXACTLY like an old NES game, but not like one of the timeless classics like Super Mario Bros 3 or Castlevania, the controls are slippery, enemies constantly hit you from off screen, the monster transformations would be a cool idea... if you could select them, you are simply transformed into a certain form after defeating a boss and deal with…

That's what I said when I found out this was a remaster, and not a new game, since it looks and sounds so beautiful that it's mesmerizing what they've done with it. You can switch video and audio for original game by pressing F1 and F2. What a great reimagination they did of those 8bit pixels and tunes. It's a masterful and well done craft. The plot follows the ending of the previous game, Wonder Boy in…

unlabelledView post →As a new player, this game is frustrating. There are zero checkpoints. Depending on the boss location, you can take 5-10 minutes to get to the boss. If you die, you get sent to the beginning. If you get hit once by certain enemies, you just get dragged along their path and end up taking more damage because you can't get out of their way. There are potions that act as lives, but they are few and far between. Every time you die, you have to wait to stop a roulette for a chance to get another…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Burdened by the weight of history the developers has had to really wrestle with this title: Do they make it as close to the originals or modernize? End result is both of these worlds and none. Like in math '10 * 0 = 0'. A lot going on but end result is not much to celebrate. Or then it's just what the doctor prescribed for you. Mileage varies from person to person but those who liked and played the originals are on the top of the pile here. Clearly the current 'Very Positive' score means the…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a great fun game that I remember fondly on my Sega Master System back in 1989. Played that cart to death, and had a notepad full of continue passwords. The remake adds charm and a great soundtrack to the quirky early action RPG. Takes about 6 hours to complete fully, gathering every piece of armor, shield and swords, all bonus gems from the new "Unknown" zones of every character, getting all but one achievement (Complete on Hard mode) and farming like 15,000Gold for 'stuff'. Edit:…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair is not just one of two different games known as Wonder Boy III, but it's also a weirdo, even by Westone standards. In between a fantasy arcade platformer and proto-pathfinder action RPG, they wedged in a run-and-gun slash horizontal STG, because why not?
