I've kept Where the Water Tastes Like Wine installed for a couple years now, hoping that one day I would feel inspired to come back and finish it, but I never do. The problem is that the game only has about 6 hours of decent content, but it has been stretched out to well over 12 (my play time at the point of giving up, somewhere west of the Missouri). At first glance, Where the Water Tastes Like Wine falls somewhere between a walking sim and a VN. You walk around America exploring,…

A lot of people offering up free VO services but also: don’t forget SAG-AFTRA launched a new indie scale agreement several years ago specifically for low budget projects. This agreement is, IIRC, how you ended up with Sting voicing a character in Where the Water Tastes Like Wine.

Majestic and beautiful game, with lots of culture and a top-of-the-line soundtrack. Lots to read and travel. The only flaw is that unfortunately it is not fully translated (if you want to play it in Italian it is partially translated), this means having to deal with sometimes complex English. Despite this, the full price is worth it. my rating 9/10

To be short: this game excels in everything but gameplay. The voice acting, music, art direction, and writing are all top-notch, having you collect hundreds of interesting and often-supernatural stories across America during the Great Depression. It features some of my favorite writers from other narrative-focused games — Emily Short, Olivia Wood, Bruno Dias, Cat Manning, and Austin Walker — and when the light hits just right, it's an excellent experience. To get to these stories, though,…

Where the Water Tastes Like Wine functions less as a conventional game and more as a slow moving journey through American mythmaking. Progress isn’t measured in mechanics or mastery, but in conversations, voices, and fragments of lived experience passed from person to person. It’s a quiet, reflective work that knows exactly what it wants to be and executes that vision with confidence. What surprised me most was how compelling the stories became. Not just those of the central characters, but…

When the developer is satisfied with the brilliant play of adding an unachievable achievement because the place where the water tastes like wine doesn't exist for whatever artistic pursuit they are seeking for, you need to suffer from: 1. BUGS There is a well-known bug that could lead to unseen stories not showing while the icon labels them on the map. There are tricks that have some chances to recover those stories but not guaranteed, and some stories will be forever missing. The main…

Tried this one out and played it to the end. Got 235/237 stories. Unfortunately, while the whole game starts out with a cool concept and great vibe, the controls are tedious. Many of the mechanics aren't even explained. (What does sleep do???) For a game about stories and narrative, it doesn't... tell you much. You don't even get to backtrack to recount any of the cool encounters you get, nor read the stories you've collected in full. You can also collect all the stories and end up not…

Where The Water Tastes Like Wine is set during the United States' Great Depression, a period of economic collapse in the 1930s. As such, the game focuses on stories about characters struggling to survive and dealing with the loss of their jobs and their homes. There is this sort of overall bleak sense of hopelessness, but you still have many stories that showcase the strength and determination of people to overcome adversity and find a way forward. What may be interesting to note, for those…

Where the Water Tastes Like Wineis one of the most singular narrative experiences out there—dreamlike, poetic, and undeniably striking. Don't get me wrong, there's definitely merit behind the concept of the game. The stories are also generally interesting and there is even a good narrator. However, I feel like the game is just far too tedious and there isn't sufficient reward for going through that tedium. The map is large, the movement speed is deliberately slow, whistling to go faster just makes a one handed game needlessly become a two handed game. Once you've played for a while, the map becomes very empty and there is zero…

I'm not strictly against games being used as art, but I feel there's a point where something could be way easier to appreciate as a different form of media. This game has thought-provoking dialogue, a captivating soundtrack to compliment the story, and marvelous voice acting. The problem is that it's hard to appreciate all of these good elements when the gameplay lulls you into a catatonic stupor of boredom because the gameplay does not go past slowly shuffling through a barren overworld. If there only was a place "Where the Water Tastes Like Wine"... First, I like the game. The stories are great, the narrator is top-notch, and the music couldn't be better for the theme of the game. Yet, the walking simulator put a huge toll on my enjoyment of the game. The idea of the game greatly interests me and I don't want let my criticism of it dampen the good work the voice actors, writers, and illustrators who collaborated on this game. KAMGUSTA's mini Review I wouldn't call this a game. Seems like developers decided to create a visual novel with a 3D world, but they sure do not have great abilities on game developing, as everything feels very amateurish. But this is not the biggest problem. Game is plain boring. You walk around the map in a super slow motion. The "stories" you should collect are a joke, just 3 rows of text. Nothing else happens. Walking across Depression-era America trading folk stories feels like an absolute poetic masterpiece for the first few hours. Unfortunately, the repetitive gameplay loop turns what should be an epic journey into a bit of a cross-country chore. Still, the atmospheric soundtrack and haunting writing make it worth a stroll if you're in a melancholy mood.

The game has interesting elements of storytelling, but it just plays so f'ing slow for no reason. I get that they are trying to lean into the whole drifting around the country collecting stories theme but it still doesn't justify the excruciating amount of time it takes to traverse the map for me. The game would be a lot better if you could just have point and click and faster movement in a 2D panoramic format, would allow the player to focus more on the story aspect. Also, the UI and menu…
