35 of 35 · most liked first@videodrome.bsky.social is the coolest video shop! I visited w/ @nonfilms.bsky.social at Atlanta Film Festival and saw a bunch of Blu-rays featuring my art, like Ryūsuke Hamaguchi’s WHEEL OF FORTUNE AND FANTASY and Terry Chiu’s OPEN DOOM CRESCENDO! Nicest staff and amazing curation #ATLFF #ATLFF25

unlabelledView post →Fantastic movie, which overshadowed Hamaguchi's other (also excellent) film that year, the lovely WHEEL OF FORTUNE AND FANTASY, a triptych of character studies in a very subtly delivered alt history where the internet collapsed.
unlabelledView post →I highly recommend his anthology film Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy (also released in 2021).
unlabelledView post →In which I compare the new DEMON SLAYER movie to Ryusuke Hamaguchi's triptych film WHEEL OF FORTUNE AND FANTASY, which is either the dumbest thing I've ever written or the most insightful, or maybe some combination of both.
unlabelledView post →Picked up some Blu-ray #movies while they were half-off at Barnes and Noble. Gotta build my personal Criterion collection bit by bit. 🙂 And I've been meaning to watch Evil Does Not Exist for a while now. I'm a big fan of the director's film Drive My Car, and I dug Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy too.
unlabelledView post →Great film! Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy is a cracker from the same year (!) too.
unlabelledView post →Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy is my second favorite film of the decade so far (after Aftersun).
unlabelledView post →Watching Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy before it leaves Criterion this month. The people who said Drive My Car was the weaker 2021 Hamaguchi film were right (both still great)
unlabelledView post →Completely obsessed with this film, how it loosely grasps my heart for three hours straight. Now I want to watch it again, lol. I still need to check out some other stuff by this director (Ryusuke Hamaguchi). I dug the trilogy of vignettes in "Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy."
unlabelledView post →I can say that about so many movies, lol. Yi Yi sitting there for years, all the while I know I'll love it. But seriously, Drive My Car is phenomenal. Even better Eiko Ishioka score. Possibly my favorite movie score. Wholly recommend Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, Asako I & II, and Happy Hour.
unlabelledView post →18. The Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy First time in quite a while watching such a strongly conversation-driven film, and it was captivating. I really enjoyed both the 2nd and 3rd stories, though the 1st was still great. I'm looking forward to seeing more from Ryusuke Hamaguchi
unlabelledView post →Just watched Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy (2021) and rated it 5 stars on Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/mo333/film/wheel-of-fortune-and-fantasy/1/ #FilmSky 📽️🎥
unlabelledView post →I adore Song Kang-ho. Just seeing him being a star of a film will make me watch it. But I also have loved "Drive My Car", and will view films just because Ryusuke Hamaguchi's the director. (That served me well with "Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy"; though less so for for "Evil Does Not Exist"!)

unlabelledView post →I watched The Cranes Are Flying this year too for the first time. It's like experiencing a gut punch that lasts a whole movie, 5/5 👍 I still need to see Evil Does Not Exist. I really loved Drive My Car, and I dug Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy too.

These looks at what’s on screen in the coming week features Bacall, Hitchcock, Hubleys and “Hackers” and brings to town Shu Lea Cheang and “Fresh Kill” and Hamaguchi Ryusuke and “Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy.” Oscar Goff has the trailers at bit.ly/4cYeUPX. #CambMA #Somerville
unlabelledView post →Not really an admirer of Hamaguchi's films, as he's too interested in acting and single shot expository expressions for my taste. But did see two things recently I quite liked. Asako I & II (2016) and the 3 part anthology film Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy (2021).
unlabelledView post →Making my way slowly through all of Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s films. I watched today and loved Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy but I think my favorite is still Happy Hour. I still haven’t seen Drive My Car yet.
unlabelledView post →I think you would like this episodic Japanese film, if you ever happen to see it. I loved it. Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy. www.imdb.com/title/tt1403...
unlabelledView post →The classroom scene in particular feels airlifted in from another film yet revealing about the film’s performativity; of course got a kick out of seeing three key players from WHEEL OF FORTUNE AND FANTASY (the two leads of the third story and the professor) as well.
unlabelledView post →> the third segment of Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s 2021 film Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, called “Once Again”
unlabelledView post →That said, in the 2021 film Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, there's a story set in a world where humanity collectively lost faith in computers after a massive cyber attack (details unspecified) and went back to analogue tech. I rolled my eyes when I saw it but it feels more believable now.
unlabelledView post →Picking something from the physical collection (Internet is terrorizing me today): Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy (2022) Here's hoping that Hamaguchi's new film screens at MIFF or another festival sometime soon 🤞
unlabelledView post →He's going to be in the next Toyoda movie (likely place for him to be), but I really need him and Hamaguchi to collab for the fourth time. His performance in Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy is one of my absolute favorites this decade.

unlabelledView post →It's a top 5 film for me. And three-hour films are a real tough sell for me. (The runtime is entirely warranted here.) I really need to see all the director's other films. I dug Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy. And have heard good things about Evil Does Not Exist.
unlabelledView post →Like a Matryoshka doll, this film moves from one story to the next, revealing layer after layer, each more intricate and captivating than the last.

unlabelledView post →I watched #WheelOfFortuneAndFantasy last night. And between that, #DriveMyCar and other films, #ryusukehamaguchi is fast becoming one of my favorite #film directors. He has the keen insight for the human condition and how we can find a measure of grace and epiphany- not in a bombastic Hollywood way but something much closer to our daily truth. Not being hyperbolic but he’s in the same class as Chekhov, Joyce, Baldwin, and Woolf. #cinema #auteur
unlabelledView post →Hamaguchi, as always, demonstrates here exactly why he is the current living cinema-master of exactly what it means to be "human". With these three shorts, he once again captures the essence of who "we" are, and with the very same brush strokes, also the zen of "there is no judgement, only consequence". I'm leaning toward the belief that Hamaguchi is the modern son of the wabi-sabi movement.
