What people are saying
Mixed early access reception; praised for visuals and realism, but criticized for bugs and ballistics.
Many players praise the game's graphics, realism, and improvements over the first title, calling it a huge step up and the best hunting simulator. However, a significant number of negative reviews cite game-breaking bugs, poor ballistics, and a rushed 1.0 release as major issues. Positive reactions highlight the immersive experience, animal AI, and herd management, while negative reactions focus on unrealistic weapon damage, poor economy, and frequent crashes or freezes. Some players note the game is still in early access and expect improvements. [1][2][3][4][9][10][11][12][16][17][18][20][25]

60 of 254 · most liked firstI would not recommend this game in it's current state. I do a very large amount of hunting IRL and the fact that you have to be within 30m of an elk with a 308. for it to do it's job properly should tell you a lot. I don't hate the game at all and I think it has a lot of potential BUT it needs a lot of work. One major complaint I have is with the current rack system, I shot three mule deer with the exact same rack with no variety whatsoever. I also dislike the elk racks entirely, elk are…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ballistics are comically unrealistic for a game that tries to seem realistic. Like I just shot an elk at 400yds and got a whole two inches of penetration with the highest penetration round. Barely poked a lung. (30-06 still has the muzzle energy of a 30-30 at the muzzle at 400yds (still more than twice the speed of sound). Shotguns are completely broken, turkey caller is broken, truck is buggy, terrain is buggy, audio is trash and buggy. Its just a poor, frustrating experience, save your money.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TLDR; not currently enough improvements over the original to justify the migration to UE5 and a whole new title. This game does not improve enough on the realism or the depth of the systems which prevented the first game from being a masterpiece. Creating a second game on UE5 was a bold decision, and under the pretense that it would pave the way for improving the mechanics is a very viable reason to justify making the switch..but none of the major gameplay mechanic gripes from the original…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →: The Good EDIT: The game is now in 1.0 and the racks and issues are not fixed, but they made sure to find time to release new DLC! This game has the best looking animals, animal management systems, and the most realistic gameplay of any hunting game bar none. There arent too many animals and you have to work hard for good ones, it feels like you are hunting in real life. Glassing feels real, animals have realistic reactions when you shoot them depending on where you hit. It also has way more…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Having a hard time calling this an improvement over WOTH1 at the moment. Does it look better? A bit. I would argue the UI is far uglier than 1 however, particularly the harvest screen looks terrible compared to 1. The harvest screen from the first game needed absolutely no changes IMO. No licensed firearms is a massive letdown coming from 1 which had only a few unlicensed firearms, and even included a few licensed scopes too. By far the most disappointing change is no ammo types. You update…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Early Access Release Review. This has ”fail” written all over it. It will never be a hunting “simulation” as it struggles to find what’s real and what’s fudged. So much fudge… Ends up being quite boring. A flat, dull, empty experience; walk for miles and never see, well anything. They cannot do animal behaviors; crocs and hippos are jokes; birds and bunnies are invisible. The starting equipment is inadequate, insulting in my opinion, to start a game with the premise of being a “professional…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was ready to recommend this game until I got screwed over for the second time just now. Around the 9‑hour mark, I fast‑traveled back to my camp. When I tried to turn, I couldn’t; I could only move forward and backward. I restarted the game, and when I loaded back in, I tried to draw my rifle… only to realize it was gone. All of my gear had vanished. I was frustrated, but since the game is still a work in progress, I scraped together enough money to buy the original rifle and scope and went…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Slap a 1.0 on there and call it good, add in some day 1 DLC too. Game is still a heavy rough draft but I guess that's the industry standard now. Pretty clear multiplayer wasn't tested at all if you spend more than a minute in it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Rushed indeed. The positional audio is still bad. Vehicle physics are still broken, and the animal AI still needs a lot of work. I honestly don't understand why the developers rushed to release version 1.0. In Early Access, major bugs and unfinished systems are understandable—that's part of what Early Access is for. But once you release the game as a full 1.0 product, expectations change. At that point, the game should feel finished and reasonably polished. Right now, it simply doesn't.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have now put in around 13 hours into this game and everything so far graphics sounds etc. have been great. With that being said the .308 win (realism) bullet mechanics are so beyond dog *** I have officially rage quit this game. It first started with a mule deer at 40 yards not being a fatal hit even though it was tucked behind his shoulder then it was a TURKEY at 26yards in the *** head!! got up AND FLEW AWAY! then a whitetail deer at 30 yards right through the shoulder and he just RAN away…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →- Graphical glitches are everywhere. - The game frequently crashes or freezes. - You get far too little money for a kill that's sold. - New weapons and accessories are far too expensive. - Weapon ballistics are poor. - Weapon damage is even worse, you can't even take down a small deer at 100 meters with .308 Winchester ammunition. - Hits are often not registered by the game or do far too little damage. - Animals run away even after a perfect lungs / heart hit and don't even die. Or they die…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you're not within 200 meters of a perfectly broadside deer with an already too powerful gun, it's going to walk away like nothing happened half the time. I think they have the right idea but the wrong execution, or need to scale everything the way it is now. After struggling for a while, I even turned on aim assist to ensure I was hitting vitals. I'm writing this after rage quitting because a mule deer survive a .338 Lapua at 180m, broadside. Nobody needs to be using a .338 on game that…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am SERIOUSLY trying to enjoy this game. But the amount of bugs that makes it unplayable is honestly ridiculous. Over the last 3 days I have had probably over 10 game breaking bugs. The most common of which being that an animal I shoot either 1: comes back from the dead and starts walking away and keeps walking no matter how close I get to it (and needs to be shot a second time to fix it) or 2: I place my shooting stick down, shoot a trophy animal (FINALLY) only to pick the stick up and be…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For some reason they just released a game that JUST had 0.5 dropped in EA. The game is HALF DONE. Ballistics and penetration are WRONG, hitting bones doesn't change the trajectory of the bullet yet, the ballistics system was pushed to EA on the 22nd. and the discord blew up with negative comments about it. SO THEY RELEASED IT? AS THE FULL GAME? Don't pay for this game yet. Wait until we hear from the DEVS on what is happening for the future of the game. Bugs in the game I have found. Sometimes…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →They 'released' the game but it still feels like its in early access. I am glad they are still working on it but it is still dishonest to say a game is finished when its not. They should be working on DLC, and the next game once they release one. there is no accountability, they think they can just finish later. So this revie has to be negative based on the state of the game AT RELEASE. Stop releasing unfinished games then slowly patch them until you meet expectations.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game looks promising, already looks and plays better than the first one, but it still needs a lot of work. To be honest I was planning to submit a thumbs down, but decided to give the team a chance since it’s an early access. Here are the bugs/annoyances I encountered just in the first hour of playing and some recommendations for the team: First Bug: Playing the tutorial, the objective to make the dog “search” and locate the blood trail, which the dog did, the objective didn’t clear, I…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I said I wouldn't recommend the game to other players, but what I mean is not right now in the early release phase. Just too many glitches to be fun to play. I've found it tiring with frozen/glitched animals all over the map, functions that don't function. IMO they should probably have spent another month or so working on it before sending it out for early release. I get it, that's the whole point of early release, but it has to be a bit more playable than it is presently. I'm sure others can…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →update, nothing relevant has changed Wouldnt buy it as it is right now. Its a grind. You can hunt deer. Otherwise youll have to grind out killing what seems like endless deer to get the funds and the experience lvls to unlock the other weapons and higher caliber rifles. The hunting is sound but the repetetive nature of just dropping deer is boring. They need to change the money system to either better reward clean kills and a perfect stalk or something to reward better hunting so that you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game doesn't have colour blind support options, so tracking red blood splatter in green grass is really difficult if you're colourblind
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really, sincerely wanted to give this game a positive review. But I can't, and I look forward to changing it to positive in the future. I recommend this game only for people who haven't purchased WotH (1), (with hesitation) If you already have the first game, you should simply wait. As someone who played WotH1, going from that game to this game is not a night and day difference like I thought it would be. There are differences for sure, but I found myself asking repeatedly why they couldn't…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You'll spend most of your time going after low quality matures, A bit like a Saturday night out. 6 shots to kill a Hippo at close range with the .375, I beat Covid with less shots. More bugs than a tramps trousers. Game is not ready for a 1.0 release, wait for things to get fixed
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hi there, I am a 67 years old Hunter...Enjoyed playing Way of the Hunter with great pleasure, and since Way of the Hunter 2 has arrived just started enjoying it. The game looks excellent, animals are well groomed, Enviornment, graphics and all features look gr8. What difficulties I am facing are: 1- The Hunter sence is not very effective - means if a animal is spooked, it is difficult to trace them, unlike in Way of Hunter 1, there was these white circles going where the animal has run off…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its another cash grab sadly. the game starts with a "hey we are tracking you by default you can turn this off in options". Dont worry its anonymous *proceeds straight to options to turn off... Vehicles do exist. * The game feels low effort, the water effects look slapped on, prone flying above the grass. Even at ultra setting its feels like graphics are on par with call of the wild which is a much older game. * Rifles, with exception of a .22 semi the rest are all bolt action. You can…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is super fun, runs really well, But the in-game prices of selling meat/the whole harvest is HORRIBLE! I got a buffalo, 600lbs, I lost half of that to dressing waste, *My guy for some reason doesn't keep the hid atleast* And I made all of 94 DOLLARS!?! Irl that would be several HUNDRED at the least! The rifle prices for the nice stuff to take down a buffalo is on the 3K range, So WHY am I only making 94 bucks??
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Way of the Hunter 2 only really looks better if you have an RTX 4070 or a more powerful GPU. If you can’t run everything on Ultra settings, I think Way of the Hunter 1 actually looks much better and cleaner. So for now, I’ll stick with Way of the Hunter 1 and wait for my RTX 6070 Ti to be released in 2027 or 2028 before reconsidering whether the sequel is worth it. Graphics are especially important in a nature game, since the environment is what makes the experience engaging alongside the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After a few patches, the game no longer CTD's for me, so I think I can manage a review. So far my takes. Its an improvement over WoH1 and its rival game CoTW. In both WoH1 and CoTW I felt like animals could sense me through terrain, and spook, and tended to spook about 250yds. Which is insane. Now, playing on default difficulty, I am actually able to sneak up to 100 yards on animals and it really looks like there is a game-engine check so that the animal can't see you though a hillside.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Map is very good but I feel like everything else was downgraded, I feel as if it was rushed and for me the first game was so much better. I know its in early access but I still feel as if I got scammed. I want a refund to be honest and I still support the game devs.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →game just released and already added dlcs that shouldnt cost real money i think only maps should cost money lodge decorations weapon packs and night vision pack should be free and obtainable by playing the game and this is also the same thing that happend with way of the hunter 1
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's better than WotH1 in many ways, and is unpolished and incomplete in many ways. I cannot recommend this game at $40 at 1.0 launch. Needs to bake a bit longer and get cheaper. Could be a great game in a year, however they did this with WotH1 and they decided to make people buy a new game instead.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think the potential of this game is very high. but currently as it is at the moment, I don't recommend it. It's one of the hardest games to look at. Why is everything so blurry/pixelated? The first game had this problem as well but it almost looks worse in this game. Holding your gear looks fine, somewhat clean and smooth, but everything else feels like I'm not wearing my glasses or someone has thrown sand into my eyes, It makes aiming for vitals (I have had to shove my face into my monitor…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Terribley rushed push to 1.0. I cannot recomend this game in its current released state. I don't think the devs care as much as they seem to say they do. I'll change this review if this game ever respects the playerbase again.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It just feels so barebones and not completed... even for an early access title. Just wait for maybe half an year, maybe it will get better
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Whenever i go into binoculars or weapons scope the game performance goes from ~85 FPS to 1 FPS. Thus, for me the game is unplayable. My PC should be able to handle this game. Resolution 3440x1440 Ultrawide - FSR Quality.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I hate leaving a bad review right away on early access but the amount of bugs that are occurring are just too much. Whenever you fast travel it plays the audio from all the maps you've collected all at once so you have about 10 voices going at once, and you get stuck on absolutely everything. I also find that animals are never in or even around their need zones, it'll be drink time and you won't find any of that species near water, they'll be a mile away tucked into the thickest brush they can…

Years later i was amazed by The Hunter Online, and some time later by Call of he Wild. But.,, This iteration of Way of the Hunter is perfect. I remember hunting with my dad about 30 years ago and i got same feeling now. Plus we have herd managment etc. , even speakable NPCs. Great. Game looking and working fantastic im on strong rig with 7900xtx gpu , 94gb ram,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Certainly was not ready for 1.0 Needs at least 6 more months in the oven before it may be an enjoyable experiance. Do not be fooled by the various men and women on the banner. There is no character customisation. Super inconsistent animal behaviour. Given a 'not toyota' stuck in low range to traverse map - Was clearly meant to be an ATV judging by sound and speed however this would constantly remind the player of their unfinished character appearance.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought the game in early access thinking the studio would build upon the foundations of Way of the Hunter 1, which I loved, and improve it further. I played just a little in early access and waited for the full release, and now that I played it a few hours, I must say it's a great disappointment. Despite a few additions and improvements (the dog and the way animal zones are discovered, mainly), everything else is worse than WOTH1: awful map filters ergonomy, the encyclopedia where the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was eager to buy and download the game and start playing it, but unfortunately, I was very disappointed and felt dizzy because the game has many bugs. It's truly awful and needs a lot of improvement. Even the character's movements are slow and jerky, despite my computer being very powerful and running all Steam games smoothly except for this one. I absolutely do not recommend buying it at the moment until they improve it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For the moment, i don't know if its final decision, but hitboxes are poor, you can shoot a deer or sheep 4 times in the neck, it won't get down.. blood on non lethal shots are only visible for like 10 meters, animal shot in a leg wil run as fast as a normal one.. moving trough moutain is hard and you can loose consciousness for getting down a small rock... and on top, some fatal errors while playing. it will be for sure good at some point. but many details are not there at the moment.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →UPDATED: Response to Developer’s Feedback & Current State of the Game I am updating this review after a direct response from the Community Manager (Miriam). While I appreciate the corporate politeness, my evaluation remains strictly negative. Moreover, pointing me to the Steam discussion links where the studio has already banned me for vocal criticism is the height of hypocrisy. The core issues of this game are not just "Early Access roughness" — they are fundamental design flaws. Here is a…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →How do you make a second game worse than your first? the map looks pretty yes, but the lod right at your feet always changing is terrible, the lake of realistic and changing whitetail and mule deer racks are terrible, the mount customizing has somehow gotten even worse, no one does a neck mount on anything its a SHOULDER MOUNT, you can def tell that the developers just wanted to make a hunting game to get paid and not actually do the research to learn how hunting actually works and how not…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The way of the hunter 2 is what could be an amazing game but... 1. my scope is constantly dissapearing and i have to buy it again or its showing me i already own one but i still can´t use it. 2. The map resetting in multiplayer after you leave the game is just enraging. 3. Bugs, lags and other small technical issues that come on go from time to time. 4. The icons are so tiny. When im following a bloodtrail i can baerly see it. And thats something that makes this whole game suuuper annoying. I…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →these guys went backwads the game looks good compared to the first but blood tracks have floating markers that just make the game unrealistic same with foot tracks there first one was better than this they just trying to be like the hunter call of the wild game preformance is stuttery but they may fix it in the future i had like 350 hours on the original game just for reference
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have no idea why the developers would say this game was ready for full release! It locks up due to a texture error every time I attempt to play the game, and that's after spending 5 hours on fixing missing graphics, such as the decks and walls of the cabins. Now of course it's to late to get a refund. Total crap!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Would not recommend this game in it's current state. Ballistics (Especially birdshot) just isn't right. I feel like I'm shooting confetti. Small game (especially duck) hunting is the most frustrating thing i've ever done. Has some of the most immursion breaking bugs I've seen like the flying ducks moving the gass below them as they fly??? The UI for the inventory system is atrocious and is somehow a downgrade from the first game. They couldn't even make a 2D png image for the different…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Here are my pros and cons after trying both WOTH1 and WOTH2 and why I think WOTH2 is better: + Better graphics. + Hunting is more enjoyable, and you see animals more often. + You see the animal noise visuals or w/e those are called while walking or running, instead of only seeing them while sneaking like in WOTH1. + Tutorial was better and more informative, I felt ready for missions right away after completing it. + I enjoy the leveling system, it feels rewarding and perks aren't too…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I simply won't play until co-op is released. I get being early access, but I see no justifiable reason to play WOTH 2 over WOTH 1 while co-op is missing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lags like crazy on my computer, animals you kill just respawn. For example 21 yr old bison i can find in same spot every time i go out. Deer Noises need to be reconfigured sound like garbage. All the antlers still look the same.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I read some of the negative reviews before purchasing this game and after 6 hours of play I can't understand what they found wrong with this game. To the contrary, not only is it fairly realistic (I'm a real world hunter), but it performs very well from a gaming PC perspective. I have the original game as well and can clearly see the improvements. I'm particularly pleased that I bought it while it was still on sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A more realistic and immersive hunting game. Be aware that most of the game is about tracking and stalking the animals and managing herds. It's not uncommon to go a long time without shooting anything, it is very slow paced. If you don't enjoy the process of tracking and looking around and just walking around virtual woods in a relaxed way you'll probably be frustrated. But if you are looking for immersion and realism and just want to escape for a bit into virtual woods this is probably the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love this game so far, it runs great even on my older rig, I am still getting steady 60fps on medium although I do have DLSS on and set to quality but I'd say it is decently optimised, in my opinion. Overall it feels like a vast improvement over the first one, graphics are fantastic, the guns feel and sound excellent and the animal models are amazing. It will keep getting better too with updates so cannot wait to see what the future holds for this project, highly recommend.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is amazing. Huge upgrade over the first one. Excited to see what they add over time. Looking forward to the development and potential. Obviously you're currently buying an early access game, there are going to be some issues. I was a little disappointed to see I can't buy a suppressor yet, extremely excited for that. I can't explain exactly why, but I'm enjoying this a lot more than I did the first one. The original Way of the Hunter ruined playing any other hunting games for me, because…

Honestly this game has already won me over and is currently hands down my favorite hunting simulator even while it's just taking it's first steps. The amount of content is not yet super massive but with the 144 hours I still haven't fully explored the 2 first maps, nor fully done all the side quests.
